Welcome to Headlines. Scouting activity is well under way as we approach Autumn. In this issue we have featured the Explorer Belt expeditions which took place this summer. The new training calendar for 2009 is pub-lished on the website, with a new approach to the delivery of Module 16—Nights Away. A Skills day for Leaders is planned for March 8th at Well End—an ideal op-portunity to brush up on or learn some new skills. Of course there are opportuni-ties to teach some skills be it firelighting, compass work or basic pioneering.—let me know if you are interested and available. With the new website we are able to offer more detail on all of the upcoming events than we can carry in HEADLINES. So visit the website and bookmark it as a favourite. Regards Melvyn Teare Editor Please note All email addresses for Hertfordshire Scouting have changed to @hertfordshirescouts.org.uk from @herts-scouts.net. Please amend your email contact list.

At the end of March 2009 Ivor Thomas will have completed his five year ap-pointment as County Commissioner and the search is already underway to identify and appoint his successor. Everyone, at all levels of Scouting throughout the County, is encouraged to contribute to the search by submit-ting a nomination if they know of any individual who should be considered for this important appointment. All of Hertfordshire’s County Commissioner’s have contributed to our first 100 years which have put the County in the forefront of Scouting in the UK. Clearly we are looking for someone who can build on our success and achievements to date and to lead Hertfordshire into its next century. A Search Group has been formed to assist the selection process and part of their role is to facilitate debate and encourage nominations. The Search Group represents many levels of Hertfordshire Scouting and comprises: Mike Shurety County Chairman Dave Pullen Deputy County Commissioner Charles Dace District Commissioner Michelle Bailey Group Scout Leader Mike Aston Assistant County Commissioner Ian Howarth Scout Leader Jane Davis Network Member If there are any aspects of the search you wish to discuss please do not hesi-tate to contact any member of the Search Group. Their details are in the County Directory or they can be approached via County Office on 020 8236 0040. The Group will be drawing up a short list of potential candidates and if you wish to make a nomination it should not be discussed with the individual con-cerned. This will help maintain confidentiality and avoid possible disappoint-ment. You will find full details of the search, including a Nomination Form, on the county website. The closing date for nominations is 30th November 2008. The future of Hertfordshire Scouts is in your hands.

The Gilwell Reunion this year was an-other outstanding event. I met up with many old Wood badge holder friends and colleagues. Hertfordshire seemed to be well involved with manning bases, Bill Turnbull MBE, President of the Net-work Russia Scout Fellowship was on duty and Mike Aston complete with fez was leading a base on the Arabian Scout Fellowship of which he is a member. Mark Jefferson was managing the na-tional Scout Activity Centre base. I was pleased to see “Jam Roll” the Rolls Royce motorcar complete with Scout badge in place of the Spirit of Ecstasy was on the front lawn of the White House. This car and the caravan “Eccles” were presented to B-P at the 1929 Jamboree on the occasion of the 21st birthday of the

movement at Arrowe Park in Birkenhead. The car has now been purchased by four members of a Scout Masonic Lodge who have created a charitable trust to enable fund raising. While I was there it was loaded and taken to the Rolls Royce workshops for a complete restoration. It may be available later for exhibition work and weddings. I also met The Hon. Michael Baden-Powell, visiting from Australia with his wife Joan. They are touring and visiting friends for a couple of months and hope to be meeting up with me again in Octo-ber to visit our County Scout Museum. Michael is the youngest grandson of the Founder and brother to Lord Robert Baden-Powell who I met at Poole last month.

A unique event held in St Albans was the 80th birthday of Joyce Anson and Gina Potter. These lovely twins are both Silver Wolf hold-ers and are unique in the UK. Over 40 peo-ple attended their surprise party at the Dis-trict HQ where matching presentations were made by CC Ivor Thomas, Roger Sands and Anne Barnes DC.

I was invited to two important Group events in September.. The First Wormley Scout Group have dedicated the refurbishment of their HQ. Over £90,000 has been raised over 5 years to up-grade and furnish these large building(s) to the credit and hard work of Terry Price the GSL. The Group celebrate their cen-tenary in 2 years time and have a history to be proud of with famous past members who have each helped maintain the high standards of the Group. The plaque was unveiled by Ivor Thomas CC in the presence of over 100 visitors and was pre-

ceded by a display of choreo-graphed dancing by a dance school that hire the HQ.

The Seventh Boreham-wood Scout Group cele-brated their 50th anniversary with the opening of a new HQ. Quite a rare occurance these days. The hut is named Denbigh Lodge in respect of their two Leaders Len and Carole Denbigh who have done so much over the years to bring the project to

fruition. Don Clark the County Surveyor was responsible for the design and negotia-tions with the Town Council who needed their previous site for housing. To mark the occasion, each member of the Group was given a framed montage of Scout emblems and a unique 50-year Group badge to be worn on their uniform. This HQ was opened by Bob Bull a founder member and Group President.

With regret I record the tragic and accidental death of Thomas Moore, a 21 year-old Explorer Scout Leader from the Stevenage Unit. This occurred while Tom was on a solo expedition that included a trip to Liechten-stein in August. He had joined up with the county ex-pedition there to make use of their campsite while car-rying out his own programme of activities. At some time nearing the end of this programme, he fell over 300 metres to his death.

At his funeral on 28th August at the parish Church of St Andrew and St George, a large por-trait of Tom dominated the moving service attended by just under 500 people the majority of whom were under 25 years of age. The family tribute was given by Rev Tony Ruffell who informed the congregation of Tom’s life outside of Scouting. This included activities in kickboxing and swimming and his studies in Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia where he cared passionately about his subject. He also stood at two local elections as a candidate for the Green Party in Stevenage. The Scouting tributes were made by Ruth Jermy and Mike Crowley of Stevenage District. Tom had been a Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout with St Nicholas Scout Group having attained a string of awards including the Queen’s Scout Award, Explorer Belt and the D.O.E. Gold Award and had entered many competitions that stretched him and team members to the limit. Tom was a young man of great potential and there is no doubt he would have gone far, given his life so full of achieve-ments at an early age. He was a great teacher of Scouting Skills to younger members and left with them memories of a courageous and victorious life. The District Scout Network will be renamed the “Thomas Moore Scout Network”.

On the 25th of this month the main event of Hertfordshire's centenary year opens at the County Scout Mu-seum, Well End. A 7 week exhibi-tion featuring some milestones of Scouting in the County for the past 100years will be held every week-end 1030 – 1600hrs until the 7th De-cember. Come along and see if your Group is featured; what made the organisation of our county an exam-ple for others to follow and how we

have maintained that lead. This will be my third major exhibition since 2004 and I hope it will be the best attended. It should in particular be attractive to those competing for their Hertfordshire Centenary Event Badge. A certificate of at-tendance will be given to every young person. Guided midweek tours can be arranged. Please ring me - 01727 860086.

The Explorer Belt is the challenge of a lifetime that is available to Explorer Scouts aged over 16 and members of the Scout Network. It is a chance to undertake an international expedition over ten days that brings a real understanding of a different country, its people and way of life. The Explorer Belt is often de-scribed as 'the antidote to the package holiday'. It is designed to help young people develop a real understanding of another country by travelling through that country, working as a small team to com-plete surprise projects, and meet-ing local people. To complete the Explorer Belt, they must: plan and train for an international expedition as part of a small team travel to another country of their choice and travel through that country over ten days complete a major project of their own choice complete around ten smaller projects keep a notebook or diary during the expedition take part in a debriefing after the expedition make a presentation about the expedition.

There were 6 teams involved with the Liechtenstein Explorer Belt.

25th Green Beret Challenge Lees Wood Scout Camp Site

14th – 16th November 2008 It is time again for each District to organise at least one challenge base for the Green Beret Day and Night Challenge exercises. Last years event saw a further increase in the number of extra bases provided and as a result queuing was virtually eliminated. This year we hope that you will all respond in a similar way and that we can try to match the 75 bases that opened at various times during the event. For reasons of Health and Safety there should be no water bases open in the evening (i.e. bases where participants will get wet). Ideally bases should take between 20 and 30 minutes each to complete and should be able to cope with up to 5 patrols at a time. If Scout staves are re-quired at your base you will need to provide them because they are no longer part of the par-ticipants’ kit requirements for the event. Staff on your base can be from any section in Scouting from Beaver Leaders to Fellowship Members and we will again welcome Explorer Scouts to attend and provide bases. We intend to have an Explorer Sub-camp, and all Explorers and Leaders who provide bases will receive our Green Beret badge for 2008. You may keep the same base open for both the daytime challenge incidents (08.30 – 17.00) and the Night Exercise (19.30 – 23.00) provided it does not involve water in the evening as previ-ously mentioned. All bases should be marked consistently throughout the event and should be physically, spiritually or intellectually challenging. It would be helpful if you can complete the form and return it to the county office, indicating how many bases you can provide and the subject of the base. If you have any questions please contact Peter Makewell on 07931 543185 Thank you for your support

International

Matters

October is the time for reflection on good times past during the summer, but more im-portantly; it is the time when we should be planning for the future. 2011 might seem a long time off but if we think about the timing of the next World Scout Jam-boree it is only 32 months away! The Jamboree will be held on the fields of Rink-aby, not far from the town of Kristianstad, in the province of Skåne, southern Sweden. A Scout who is at least 11 years 2 months old now will be eligible to take part as a member of one of the Hertfordshire Units. Any over the age of 18 during July/August 2011 will be able

to join the International Service Team. During 2009 we will be searching for Hertfordshire Jamboree Unit members and then the detailed planning begins in earnest. To keep up-to-date on Jamboree planning pro-gress go to http://www.worldscoutjamboree.se/en/news/subscribe-newsletter/ and you can subscribe to Aktuellt - an electronic newsletter for anyone who is interested in the World Scout Jambo-ree. It is distributed via email two to four times a year. Aktuellt has updates on the preparation, interviews with team members, interesting facts about Sweden, and even a ba-sic Swedish course!

Our monthly entry from the “Milestones, 100 years of Hertfordshire Scouting” project.

The publication is now available from County Office at £15.00 plus postage

1969 October 24. A cheque for £224.12.6d. (at today’s value £2,234.52) was handed to CC Dr Leslie Pears for use by Handicapped Scouts in Hertfordshire. The money was raised by sponsorship a walk by two enterprising teenage Scouts from First Chorleywood Scout Group. Senior Scout Patrol Leader Simon Keene and Venture Scout Andrew Bu-chanan, who decided to walk from Hertfordshire to their Scout campsite at Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, a total of 210 miles. They planned the route to take in as many footpaths and rivers as possible. The also used local guide-books to contact over 100 business sponsors en-route. At each of the 14 night halts, they sent a postcard home to show how far they had got. They carried full kit and were only offered one lift (which they politely refused) and were fortunate to have only a half day`s rain. An excellent idea that used many of their Scouting Skills. Archivist note - A Milestones reader from Wales has asked if I can find out which camp-site the boys used at Llandovery. As it is the fortieth anniversary of the walk in October 2009, can we expect a re-enactment walk to take place? Perhaps Rickmansworth, Chorley-wood District Scouts could help with tracing these Scouts who will now be in their middle 50s. Please let me know if you locate them or can provide more information.
