Michelle Thielke

I = Interviewer M = Michelle

I: How long have you been teaching and what are the ages of your students?

M: I first started working in Hong Kong back in 2013 & 2014 and returned in early 2019. I used to teach Primary School children and now I teach Nursery and Kindergarten (2 – 6 years old).

I: Are you current working full-time or part-time?

M: I am a full-time NET.

I: Please share with us a memorable moment as a teacher?

M: I had once particular challenging student that was previously notoriously difficult to manage by other teachers. Once I managed to have a one-on-one session and get to know him better, I managed to find his strengths and improved the ways to communicate with him which made him feel comfortable in my class. I was excited when this student showed his trust in me and I was able to have him participate positively in my class and improve his overall enjoyment of school.

I: What advice would you give to a teacher who needs to adjust to the work culture at their school?

M: Embrace your new environment and the new experience. Use it as an opportunity to also learn.

Ask many questions and don’t be discouraged when corrected. A new culture can be uniquely different and sometimes perceived as
