12009 Annual Report

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRAs Board Chair for United Way of Greater St. Joseph, I want to thank the community for your generosity. In 2009, United Way invited the community to LIVE UNITED, and you answered the invitation in amazing ways.

In April, local leaders from all sectors came together to begin a new, long-term effort aimed to support individuals and families as they work to improve personal economic and financial situations. The beginning of the Financial Stability Initiative shows the willingness of this community to meet challenges together.

Another promising project involves volunteerism. Social service agencies are sharing their volunteer needs in a central database. Individuals, businesses, and groups are answering the call by volunteering, using the same database. I encourage you to use United Way’s Volunteer Center. It is a powerful resource that is helping us all lend a hand with specific needs as they arise across the community.

During August’s tax-free weekend, local shoppers donated new school supplies that filled three school buses. The STUFF THE BUS! event response was an incredible show of support for hundreds of children who, as a result, started the school year equipped and prepared to learn.

During the United Way Campaign, restaurants held Eat. Drink. LIVE UNITED days. Local businesses displayed cut-outs of LIVE UNITED t-shirts with customer names when they donated to United Way along with the business transaction. The United Way video and LIVE UNITED message were aired more than ever throughout the community thanks to generous media outlets. And, in spite of a challenging economy, our combined gifts allowed United Way to exceed the campaign goal!

Thank you for LIVING UNITED! Your generous support of United Way in so many different ways is making a difference in people’s lives. We can all be proud to be part of such a caring and hard-working community.

FOCUS OF UNITED WAY

Financial StabilityUnited Way supports efforts for families and individuals in crisis to get back on their feet. Such efforts include food, disaster relief, information and referral, and different shelter services related to homelessness or abuse. Together with partner agencies and community leaders, we are also working to prevent financial situations from becoming problems in the first place.

HealthHealth is another focus area for United Way. In the Greater St. Joseph Area, your contributions help infants through the elderly improve their physical and mental well-being. Healthis promoted through fitness and wellness activities, nutrition and in-home services, counseling, and other important programs. Good health is crucial for everyone.

EducationEducation continues to be an important focus of our local United Way. We work to help people of all ages reach their potential through a variety of educational pursuits that will, in turn, strengthen our community. We support quality early learning, youth education in and out of the classroom, and a variety of other instruction for life-long learning.

Education, financial stability, and health are the building blocks for a good life. Education is essential to getting and keeping a job with a livable wage and health benefits. Financial resources adequate enough to pay for today’s necessities and to save for the future provide families some sense of security. Good health keeps children on track in school and allows adults to be productive in their lives. Remove any one of these building blocks, and the other two topple.

HOW UNITED WAY WORKS

United Way impacts lives in our community. Chances are, you encounter people every day who provide United Way services, receive United Way services, or support United Way with their talents, time, or finances.

United Way serves as an agent of change in our community by focusing on the areas of education, financial stability, and health. Each spring, community volunteers allocate campaign dollars to local Partner Agencies who provide direct services to people in need every day. Each fall, businesses, organizations, and individuals come together to share the message of United Way as they ensure the success of the Campaign. This long-standing fundraising tradition enables our community to financially support long-lasting change here at home. Throughout the year, United Way Initiatives/Programs bring all segments of our population together to tackle particular local needs.

In 2009, United Way of Greater St. Joseph continued working with area people and organizations to improve lives through the caring power of community. At a time when we were all affected by the country’s economic downturn, local needs increased, and citizens responded by supporting the United Way Campaign, surpassing the $3.32 million goal. Our community truly LIVED UNITED this year.

United Way of Greater St. Joseph exists because of community, and we continue to maintain a high standard of accountability to you. Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of hard working volunteers and wise operational practices, over 91 cents of every dollar contributed to United Way goes straight into programs that impact people in need.

Leadership St. Joseph

United Way of Greater St. Joseph

H.E.L.P. FundCreated in 2002 . . . to support local, long-term health initiatives through grants. Health Efforts for Local People (H.E.L.P.) recipients are awarded grants for up to $10,000. 2009 recipients included: Heartland Health’s Patee Market Youth Dental Clinic; BackPack Buddies through Second Harvest; Catholic Charities’ Intensive Care Management for the Home Plus program which provides access to medical and mental health services to recently homeless and disabled residents in their housing program; the Diabetes Management Initiative and Dental Hygiene program for adults at Social Welfare Board; the Computerized Psychological Assessment Program at The CENTER, a Samaritan Center; and supplemental in-home nurse services to homebound elderly clients served by InterServ.

Financial StabilityNew in 2009 . . . to support individuals and families as they work to improve their personal economic and financial stability. Community leaders from all sectors collaborate to focus on three main aspects: financial education, increasing the number of people utilizing free tax preparation services, and policies and regulations that prevent people from moving out of poverty. In October 2009, the Millionaires’ Club was launched at Lindbergh Elementary School through a partnership between United Way, Lindbergh, Citizens Bank & Trust, and the YMCA. The Millionaires’ Club brings financial education into the after school program on a weekly basis and allows students to open their own savings account. Nearly 60 students participate every week.

Seven community Initiatives/Programs are organized through United Way of Greater St. Joseph. Each goes beyond meeting immediate needs. Each brings the community together to address underlying causes of problems. If you want to be part of any of these exciting Initiatives, call the United Way office at 816-364-2381.

Created in 1982 . . . to build the skills of individuals to be effective leaders in the community. Leadership St. Joseph is an annual, year-long leadership development program for adults in the St. Joseph area. Twenty-seven people completed the program in 2009. Each year, the class is divided into four project groups who work through the process of identifying a need in the community and researching possible solutions. Projects developed in 2009 were: Bluegrass Battles Hunger; River Walk Canine Cleanup; Suds Buddies; and Volunteer Center Marketing Plan.

COORDINATED BY UNITED WAY

2009 Annual Report

Volunteer Center

Success By 6®

Operating since 1999 . . . to ensure that all children are healthy, nurtured, and ready to succeed when they enter school. Success By 6 helps strengthen the system that nurtures our children. Parents, childcare providers, early education teachers, and local businesses can all help our children develop well. This year, over 5,000 families received Parent Resource Kits, and interested parents attended activities focused on parenting topics. The 21 childcare providers participating in the our Quality Rating System project made significant progress in 2009, and we also awarded 27 early educators with college scholarships. Businesses are beginning to partner with childcare centers as they recognize that the entire community needs to be involved to raise healthy, nurtured, and successful children.

Unmet Needs CommitteeBorn out of the flood of 1993 . . . to help people in need find long-term solutions to their problems. The committee identifies alternative resources and solutions for cases brought before them. Community members and representatives from non-profit, faith-based, and government agencies serve on the committee. In 2009, the committee served more working families, people who had lost their jobs, and individuals who had never sought assistance before. The committee responded to such needs as car repairs which allowed the owners to drive to work and prescription medicine for a newly uninsured, laid off worker.

Profit In Education©

Began in 1989 . . . to reduce theunemployment rate by improving the educational level of our community. Partners include St. Joseph School District, local businesses, Missouri Western State University, St. Joseph Area Chamber of Commerce, non-profit organizations, and United Way. The Initiative works to improve the graduation rate, increase the percentage of adults who attain their GEDs, encourage life- long learning, and provide an educated workforce. In 2009, Profit In Education began the Business and Education Succeed Together (BEST) program at Lafayette High School. The purpose of BEST is to demonstrate to high school freshmen the job opportunities throughout St. Joseph and the education and training required for those careers. Students learn from business representatives what it is like to work at a particular place and also travel to the business to see jobs in action.

New in 2009 . . . to be a central resource for the community, individuals, and organizations for all volunteerism needs. Goals of the Volunteer Center are: to connect people to quality opportunities to serve; to build opportunities for local volunteering; to promote volunteering; and to educate the impact of volunteering to our community. A Volunteer Center Advisory Council has been created to oversee the development of this community resource. Two big events this first year included organizing the Stuff the Bus! School Supplies Drive and partnering with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. for their 100-bike giveaway event at the Tour of Missouri. Through the Volunteer Center, individuals and groups can find volunteer opportunities, and agencies can find volunteers. Please see how you can plug into the Volunteer Center by calling United Way at 816-364-2381 or by clicking on the Volunteer button at www.stjosephunitedway.org.
