“O Come, O Come, Emanuel” No. 245 “O come, desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind. Bid envy,
strife, and quarrels cease;; fill the whole world with heaven’s peace. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel!”
BENEDICTION POSTLUDE “Joy to the World” G.F. Handel, arr. N. Johnson LUKE 2:1-7 (NIV) “In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of
the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

CHIMES WELCOME, REGISTRATION and ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE “Suite Francaise” Paul Bazelaire Mary Wilkening, cello BRINGING IN THE LIGHT LIGHTING OF THE FOURTH ADVENT CANDLE Dave & Dr. Talia Welsh CHORAL CALL TO WORSHIP “Celtic Advent Carol” Angerman/Barrett CALL TO WORSHIP: L: Welcome people of God to this fourth Sunday of Advent where we join our hearts around the theme of love. P: The gospels proclaim that the Advent of Jesus was the most profound expression of love to all people. L: As it is written, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son.” P: Let us celebrate the Advent of Christ as a reminder of God’s love for all people, amen. HYMN “The First Noel” No. 265
(Verses 1, 2, 5, 6) CONFESSION OF THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Prayer of Confession: (in unison)
Heavenly Father, your love for us was most clearly demonstrated in the Advent of Jesus; born of the Virgin Mary in a stable in Bethlehem. In this event, Your love was manifest in the act of giving. As we reflect on the story of the coming of Christ this Christmas, remind us that our love is also demonstrated in the same way. May our giving this Christmas be done in your love, thereby, living for others the power of the gospel message. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray, amen.

Announcements for December 23, 2012
CHILDREN IN CHURCH
December 30th will be Children in Church Sunday. There will be no Sunday school this day. Enjoy worship with your family!
2012 CONTRIBUTIONS In order for your offerings to be reflected on your 2012 giving statement, all contributions must be in the church office no later than noon on Monday, December 31st.
PULSE (CLP) & HOMELESS YOUTH CONNECTION (HYC) CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT PROJECT UPDATE
Through generous congregational support, along with special assistance from the Women’s Christian Service Fellowship (WCSF) and Men’s Fellowship, we were able to present $6,680 to the Homeless Youth Connection for their Christmas gift card project. The kids will be presented gift cards from various retailers, food establishments, and it included a special treat for movie theaters. The funds collected represent over 267 of our ornaments! A special “Thank You” goes to Pulse Youth Group for assistance in making these ornaments and in assisting the Mission Committee on this project. We emptied our trees this year and we are helping to make a difference in the lives of our local youths! A very merry and blessed Christmas, indeed!
WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAMS
Wednesday evening programs will break for the Christmas season, resuming on January 9th. 4C children choirs will resume rehearsals on January 16th.
Take time to check out what’s happening… Children in Church Special Study 2012 Contributions Tuesday Morning Bible Study Mission Ornament Project Art of Active Listening Seminar Wednesday Night Programs Orientation Nursery/Cry Room 3F Fellowship Pulse Youth Group Information Booth

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDIES Both the Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening Bible studies will break for the Christmas season, resuming January 8 & 9th, respectively.
NURSING AND CRY ROOM
The Fireside Room South is available during service times if you have a baby that needs one-on-one care. The service is shown on the TV by a live feed from the sanctuary so you can still hear the sermon and music. Please contact an usher if you would like directions to the Fireside room.
PULSE YOUTH GROUP The Urbans will be hosting a family game night on Friday, December 28th, for Pulse. Game night will begin at 6:00 p.m. This will be a GREAT way to share some of your holiday treat leftovers while having some fun playing games. If you would like to attend, please sign up in Souers Hall. If you have questions, please talk to Pastor Kerri. We will begin our normal meeting time on January 6th, at 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. in Souers Hall.
SPECIAL STUDY IN JANUARY THE LIFE OF SOCRATES AND THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
The life and words of Socrates have inspired many in helping them decide how to live. What special connections are there between the ancient Athenian and our Lord and Savior? We will offer a Bible course in January on the 9th, 16th, and 23rd after the Wednesday evening meal, to cover three topics. We will see what Socrates and Jesus told us, how they were both rejected, and what they told us about where we will be going after our time on earth is finished. Plato and the Gospel writer John will provide our texts. Professor Paul Tipton will be leading us through our examination. Please join us!
TUESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Romans: The Letter that Changed the World
January 8th, Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. begins a twelve week Bible study of Romans, the first epistle in the New Testament. Indeed, the Book of Romans is one of the most profound books in existence; it is certainly one of the most valued parts of the Holy Scriptures. It has been appropriately termed the Cathedral of the Christian faith. Its profound theology and impressive style were reason enough for it to be assigned the first place among the Pauline epistles. Pastor Jim will be teaching this study.

THE ART OF ACTIVE LISTENING:
Beyond Theory and Into Practice Sunday, January 20th, at 12:00 p.m., a 90 minute seminar on active listening techniques and practice will be led by Dr. Gordon Stein, Senior Lecturer, retired. Sign up for this seminar sponsored by The Congregational Care Ministry of our church in Souers Hall between services. Lunch will be provided and a R.S.V.P. is needed as space is limited. Dr. Stein retired from the Department of Counselor Education, University of Texas Brownsville. We know and welcome him as the new husband of Marilyn Palmatier. Dr. Stein devoted his career to the training of counselors. The techniques taught in this class will improve our relationships in dealing with others in the church, home or in the office.
ORIENTATION
There will be no orientation/membership presentation during December. The next orientation meeting will take place on January 20th in the Fireside Room South immediately following the 9:15 a.m. service. If you plan to attend the 10:45 a.m. service, every effort will be made to ensure your being able to do that. New members will be received on January 27th during the 9:15 and/or the 10:45 a.m. services. So come, have your questions answered and learn more about this House of Prayer for ALL People. Please contact Janet Albert at (623) 466-9439 or at [email protected] if you have any immediate concerns or questions.
3 F CLUB – FOOD, FUN, FELLOWSHIP Look to the New Year for a great fellowship opportunity. Sign up in Souers Hall to create a dinner club for couples and singles of all ages. Once a month, for four months beginning on January 27th, each couple or individual will be put into a group to host a dinner, and other members will assist. For more information see Rob Gimbl or call him at (623) 466-9216.
INFORMATION BOOTH
Members from the congregation will be greeting you at the information booth in the breezeway and in front of the church during the month of December. Please drop by the booth for information including visitor brochures, campus maps, and current newsletters. If you are visiting, we would like to meet you and answer your questions!
