Moab-Ancient times: Moses feels the sands of time running out.
The Israelites encamp across the Jordan from the Promised Land, their 40-year journey now at its end. Soon, Joshua will lead the nation across the river. This time, the people are ready: wilderness born, desert-hardy and prepared to fulfill their destiny. And yet…once in the Promised Land, how will they preserve their identity? Settled in their farmland and towns, will they stay true to the teachings they embraced in the wil-derness? Will they honor their Cov-enant with G-d, forged at Sinai and ratified during a generation of desert
dwelling? How can Moses, about to die, insure that they honor the tradition and stay true to their values? Will they remain loyal to Moses’ teachings after he is gone? In this moment of uncertainty, Moses introduces the Torah, a Book of Teaching, the people’s possession they will carry with them into the Land and whose stories, laws and teachings will guide them wherever

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
For the last seventeen
years, due to the timing, I have associated the celebration of the Jewish New Year with the beginning of the new school year. The connection has been an interesting one. In my secular life, September was an exciting, frenetic, and busy time for me and my family. The balance provided by Judaism has always been most welcome. Septem-ber and the customs associated with the month of Elul provide a time for introspection as we enter the period of the Days of Awe. As I begin to reflect, I realize that this September feels extremely differ-ent. Our youngest son graduated from the West Hartford Public Schools and started college out-of-state. Peter and I have officially become “empty-nest-ers.” I have also experienced another

large change — serving as President of The Emanuel Synagogue. Being President of The Emanuel is truly a privilege and an honor. I am inspired daily by our members’ dedication and commitment to our synagogue. On Yom Kippur, we will ask for G-d’s forgiveness for sins we have committed before G-d, including the sin we have committed through speech, through harshness or impu-rity of speech, by foolish talk, by evil talk about another, and by the prattle of our lips. Today, civil discourse has become an extremely important topic for discussion. Consider the effect that the advent of social media has had on civil discourse. Look at the current political landscape. Reflect on the dramatic shift in the meaning of “safe spaces” on college campuses. Think about how members of our pluralistic Jewish community speak to each other about Israel. As we engage in sacred work at The Emanuel Synagogue, we need to be mindful that words may sometimes
speak louder than our actions. Your Board of Trustees recently agreed to a Code of Conduct to govern its interactions. Among the agreed-upon rules for engagement, three of them pertained to speech. I would like to share them with the congregation: (i) Have Respect for One Another, Be Constructive, and Be Collaborative; (ii) Let Each Other Speak, Listen to Each Other, Learn from Each Oth-er, and Encourage Different Points of View; and (iii) Be Precise and Thoughtful in our Remarks. I hope these rules for engagement will guide our interactions at every level in the synagogue and provide inspiration for reflection during our recitation of the Al Chet prayer on Yom Kippur. My family and I wish you and your loved ones a good and sweet new year. May your fast on Yom Kippur be meaningful. I look forward to collab-orating with you in 5778!

Dear Friends, Thank you so much for donating to a fund set up to help me after my accident this winter. I was deeply touched by each and every one of your acts of kindness and generosity as I got back up on my feet. I have always believed the Emanuel community is very special. Your many gifts of support to me were truly over-whelming. It feels great to be working at the Emanuel again. But it feels even better every day to be with the many people in the community who I have come to know over the years. You are all true friends. Thank you again for your generosity. It sure is great to be back. Best, Jack Mullin

they go. Moses dies, but his words and teachings live. The People of Israel carry Torah with them into the land. Generations pass. The Israelites settle the land, but over time, they forget the Torah and become like any other pagan people. The Torah survives, unnoticed for gener-ations. King Hezekiah rediscovers Torah, but the revival does not last. Cast into exile and, then, miraculously, returned to the Land, the people embrace Torah. Ezra the Scribe intro-duces weekly reading of the Torah, and the Jewish People return to the Covenant. Weekly Torah reading continues, unbroken to this day. The Torah of Moses continues to guide, instruct, challenge and inspire us. When we gather in synagogue for the Torah Service, we affirm our values and traditions and bond as a community over the teachings of Moses and the Prophets. We find connections between the stories and laws and the life we live today. We seek personal meaning and experience group solidarity.
In this spirit, I invite you to come join the Torah Service on Shabbat mornings at 10:00 a.m. We have set this starting time to make it easier for more people to come and to create energy around arriving at synagogue, as we do on Rosh Hashanah for the Blowing of the Shofar. (For enthusiasts and early risers, Shacharith begins at 9:00 a.m.) Taking out the Torah is a time of drama, emotion and com-munity. During the Torah Service, we follow and study the reading, and celebrate important life passages: b‘nai mitz-vah, wedding anniversaries, special birthdays, upcoming marriage, naming babies, blessing special trips and other simchas. We aim to finish the entire Shabbat morning service around 11:30 a.m. most weeks, and by 12 noon when there is a bar or bat mitzvah or special event. A Kiddush lunch follows the service and everyone is welcome. “Torah at Ten” is a great way to find personal meaning, learn about our tradition, celebrate life’s joys, and strength-en our Emanuel Family. I hope to see you there! Debbie, Gabi, Sharone and Ilan join me in wishing you and your families a happy and healthy New Year — L’Shanah Tovah!

SuKKOT HOME OBSERvAncE
The Festival of Sukkot offers several opportunities for home observances.
Blessing and waving the arba minim, a.k.a. the lulav and etrog, can be done every day of the Festival except on Shabbat. Sitting in the sukkah can be done any day of the festival.
Don’t own a lulav and etrog? Come use the set we have at The Emanuel.
Don’t have a sukkah this year? Visit a friend or neighbor who has one. Also, the sukkah at The Emanuel is available for you.
Eating a meal or snack and even sleeping in the sukkah enhances the fulfillment of the mitzvah, “To dwell in the sukkah.”
The blessings that are said for each of these mitzvoth are included below:

What happens when you com-bine traditional hazzanut
(cantorial music) with jazz? You get a special spiritual experience. That’s exactly what we hope to make happen on Saturday eve-ning, September 16 at 10:00 p.m., for our annual Community S’lihot service. First, a word of explanation.
S’lihot is the service which ushers in the High Holy Day season. Traditionally recited at midnight on the Saturday night/Sunday morning before Rosh Hashana, it is meant to spiritually prepare us for the days ahead. The liturgy pri-marily consists of prayers that are also recited on Yom Kip-pur in which we confess our sins as a community (“Asham-nu”) and ask God for forgiveness. Because the service does not take place on a Shabbat or festival, it lends itself to some musical creativity. This year, we have the pleasure of hosting The Afro-Semitic Expe-rience to accompany me and some of my local colleagues. This very talented jazz ensemble combines an eclectic array of styles, sophisticated musicianship and good song-writing. It began nearly 20 years ago as a collaboration of Jewish-American bassist David Chevan and African-Amer-ican pianist Warren Byrd, a native of Hartford. They performed and recorded jazz interpretations of traditional spirituals and Jewish songs before adding several other instrumentalists.
NOTES FROM THE CANTORby Hazzan Sanford Cohn
The service we are planning is like none other I have participated in before. I urge you to come and experience it with your friends, especially if you have never attended a S’lihot service. Come with an open mind, an open heart and an open soul to absorb and take part in what I am sure will be an uplifting experience for all. The service will be preceded by a social gathering at 8:30 p.m., followed by a lecture by our Scholar-in-Residence, Professor Benjamin Sommer of the Jewish Theological Seminary.

The upcoming exhibit in the Rose, David and Ralph Mitnick cases
will showcase the Jewish Children’s Service Organization (JCSO), in celebration of its 100-plus years of supporting needy Jewish children. The display, located at the entrance to Koret Hall, includes documents and photographs from JCSO’s past and present, along with some examples of what JCSO does for children in the Greater Hartford area. Many of the documents are copies from the Greater Hartford Jewish Historical Society’s archives. JCSO’s roots go back to the early 1900s, when a small group of women began collecting nickels and dimes for the Hebrew Ladies’ Orphan Asylum, which opened on Fairfield Avenue in Hartford in 1917. After World War I, there was a widespread influenza outbreak which left many Jewish or-phans. Fifty-seven children were ini-tially housed in the Asylum, receiving not only basic care, but also religious instruction. From 1928-1938 more than 70 children were housed in the Hebrew Women’s Home for Children on Blue Hills Avenue in Hartford. In 1938 the children were placed in foster homes, and Mount Sinai Hos-pital purchased the building in 1944.

By 1950, Jewish Social Services had assumed direct childcare management and the group officially became the Jewish Children’s Service Organiza-tion. JCSO then purchased land in New Hartford which was deeded to the Jewish Community Center to be used as Camp Shalom. While Camp Shalom operated in New Hartford, JCSO contributed funds for develop-ment of facilities. Currently, JCSO supports Jewish children in the Greater Hartford area by awarding money for food, clothing and other basic needs to families in financial distress, helps to cover day-care costs, provides backpacks filled with school supplies, gives Chanukah gifts, and awards camperships and scholarships. The organization also awards scholarship block grants to the Bess and Paul Sigel Hebrew Acad-emy of Greater Hartford, Solomon Schechter Day School, Hebrew High School of New England, JTeen Con-nect, Camp Shalom and Camp Gan Israel. JCSO will showcase its centennial with a reception Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the Mandell JCC in West Hartford. For further information, please contact Marcia Mizrahi at [email protected].
The Emanuel Endowment exists to provide operating funds to the
synagogue annually by distributing a portion of the earnings from the funds. The Endowment has over $2 million in principal and provides over $80,000 in operating funds each year. Donations to the Endowment are added to the existing balances and as the principal grows, the distributions to the operating budget grow. As a result, endowment giving provides a gift to the synagogue year after year. The Emanuel Endowment con-sists of a number of family funds, but also has several other funds including a General Endowment Fund and a Board Fund making it easy for anyone to participate in endowment giving at any level. The funds are comingled with the existing endowment for in-vestment purposes, but balances for each fund are tracked and reported separately. And, over time, additional contributions can be made to the fund to help both that fund and the overall endowment grow. It is easy to set up a new endow-ment fund. Contributions are tax de-ductible. The minimum donation to establish a fund is $1,000 ($5,000 to designate the purpose of the distribu-tions). The Fund can be named as the donor wishes and is a wonderful way to recognize a family’s commitment to and passion for The Emanuel. During the Aim Chai Campaign to build endowment, an endowment can be funded over several years. For more information, contact Naomi Baline Kleinman, Endowment Committee Chair, at (860) 523-9157 or [email protected].

LEARNING / Talmud TorahCommunity of
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWSby Barbara Fink, Religious School Principal
I am writing this bulletin article from an extremely mag-ical place. A place where Judaism is infused into every
part of every day. Kids singing in Hebrew and being proud to be Jewish. As many of you know, I have spent my summer at Camp Ramah and it has made me think a lot about how we educate our children about Judaism. I spoke before the summer of how Jewish camp is the best gift a parent can give to their children because Jew-ish camp has proven to be what adults attribute to their strong Jewish identities. I have had the opportunity to talk and learn from amazing Jewish educators and Rab-bis. I have seen camp from a different lens this summer. I have been looking for ways to bring camp back to The Emanuel. It has been a real growing experience for me as a Jewish educator. At the end of May and beginning of June I was inspired by our Religious School teachers. We met and collaborated on curriculum planning and engaging our students in Jewish life and making our classrooms more child centered; allowing our students to ask the BIG questions while pre-paring them to live Jewish lives where a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is just a small part of their journey and not a culminating event. Each of our teachers brings a unique way to teach-ing and all are excited to bring new experiences to our students and provide them with positive Jewish experiences that leave them wanting more. We decided that this coming year our focus will be on Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. We will provide our kids ways to learn about different opportunities to make the world a better place. I want to mention that we received a grant from the Jewish Foundation to purchase document cameras and projectors. These help bring us into the 21st Century for

Join Rabbi Philip Lazowski for lunch and learn classes on Tuesdays, 12 noon to 1:15 p.m., for six consecutive
weeks, beginning Oct. 15, 2017. The topic is “The Book of Deuteronomy.” The Book of Deuteronomy is a recapitulation of the other four books of the Torah. This makes it especially interesting and instructive. It is a wonderful book; not everyone is aware of its important influence on Judaism and Western civilization. Moses’ speeches and prophecies, recorded in this book, express his timeless vision and his essential role as “Moshe Rabeinu,” Moses our Teacher, as he is called by the Sages. The classes are free of charge and include kosher lunch and free parking at 15 Lewis Street in Hartford. RSVP is required by phone to Kevin at LAZ Parking at (860) 522-7641, ext. 7714 or [email protected], or to the Emanuel Synagogue office, (860) 236-1275 or by email to [email protected].

Just a reminder that some chil-dren’s books are set up in the hallway heading into the Religious School Office, so that when parents and chil-dren are waiting for a sibling in the Religious School, they can entertain themselves with these books. For September and October, I will be highlighting titles pertaining to Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot. Please put the books back when you are done reading them. In the Library as well, I will be highlighting High Holy Day books on top of the shelves where the chil-dren’s books are located. Please come and take out some books for your children and family. Also, stay tuned for another Book Fair Fundraiser for the Emanuel Syn-agogue at Barnes and Noble in Blue Back Square before Chanukah. We are discussing organizing a Religious School Talent Show on the same day as the Book Fair. More details to fol-low, and a date will be announced in the November/December bulletin.
Borrow by EmailYou can send your book requests to [email protected]. Include the title, author, your name and phone number. If you are looking for a book on a specific subject, please email me that request, too. If we do not have the book in our library, I can try to get it for you elsewhere or possibly or-der it for the Emanuel Library. I will sign the book out to you and leave it for you on the library desk with your name on it for pick up at your conve-nience. We even have videos — VHS and DVD and some titles on CD. Usually, the term for borrowing is one month, and the title can be renewed.

ROSH HASHAnAH (9/21):
The Shofar will be sounded each day between 10:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. This is the most essential element of Rosh Hashanah — hearing the Shofar. If you have children and are planning to bring them to one of our Youth Services, please come to the Sanctuary first for the Sounding of the Shofar. We are aiming to bring everyone together in one place to share this moment. Please make every effort to be in the Sanctuary no later than 10:00 a.m. Family services will start after the Sounding of the Shofar:

TASHlIcH
Monday, September 21, 2017 – 5:00 p.m.
On Rosh Hashanah afternoon we go to a body of water to per-form the Tashlich ceremony — to symbolically “cast away” our accumulated sins and transgressions and to purify ourselves as the New Year begins. To enact this “casting away” we toss a few bread crumbs into the water.
As usual, we will have two locations for Tashlich:
Simsbury — Simsbury Road and Route 10, near the oldest tree in Connecticut.
West Hartford — At the bridge, near the corner of Trout Brook and Asylum.

More than 65 volunteers — beginning with set up on June 26 and ending with cleanup on July 27 —
helped make our Tag Sale one of the most successful ever. This year, we were fortunate to be the recipients of the contents of an entire apartment, which gave us a great start. For the next two and a half weeks, donations came in so quickly, it was often difficult to keep up. But many, many volunteers helped almost every day. We thank those who thoughtfully donated items, and we especially want to thank our volunteers who helped with the pickup of furniture. We had teen volunteers again this year, and they helped with many of the heavy furniture pickups and with unloading donations from packed cars. We want to thank our maintenance staff for always being there to help in every way, and to our office staff for fielding all the calls about the Tag Sale. Finally, we are very pleased to announce that this fund raiser resulted in approximately $15,000!
Again, much appreciation goes to all who helped make this year’s fund raiser such a success.

News From The
It is a great honor to be your new Emanuel Synagogue Sisterhood
president. I previously served on the Sisterhood board in a variety of po-sitions, but my last two years was as the VP of Fund Raising. I am excited to be in this position where my main goal is to increase our membership by working with my new board members to host diversified events throughout the calendar year. Our Sisterhood will be partnering with various arms of the synagogue for many of these events. There will be something for everyone’s mind, soul and body, and we hope to see you at many of these
events. Further details will be com-municated throughout the calendar year for the events listed below. This past June, our first board meeting was held at my house with a pot-luck brunch, at which we dis-cussed new policies and procedures to be implemented by our board. It was a great success, and I would like to thank the board for all their help in making our upcoming term success-ful. As you may already know, Sister-hood supports the Jewish Theological Seminary, the synagogue, funds camp scholarships and Women’s League for
SISTERHOOD by Audrey Yanofsky, President
Conservative Judaism all by raising funds at our various events. We could not do this without your help and support. The success of the Sisterhood is to adapt to the needs of the current gen-eration while retaining the traditions of the past. If you are not yet a Sis-terhood member, we encourage you, your family member or friend to join. Please feel free to contact me with questions or suggestions at [email protected]. If there is a skill or talent that you would like to share, please let me know. From my family to yours, I wish you a healthy and happy new year!!! Shanah Tova.

BROTHERHOODNews From The
by Kevin O’Connell
The Brotherhood fall kickoff breakfast will be held on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 9 a.m., with guest speaker Dr.
Michael Hallisey. Dr. Hallisey speaks about the master artist Caravag-gio and how his life mirrors the intersection of religious turmoil that ended the Medieval era. In the early 1500s,
at the height of the Black Plague that killed half of Europe, Martin Luther “pro-tested” against the excesses of Roman Catholicism and formed the Protestant re-ligious movement. Roman Catholicism was soon in decline in the late 1500’s until the master artist Car-avaggio arrived to teach the masses. At the time there were no colleges, no formal schools…so art was used to teach. Amidst the religious
chaos, the population of Europe was looking for leadership, and Catholics then set out to find their Jewish roots in Jerusalem. Dr. Hallisey ties all this history together in a 25-minute Powerpoint presentation that features his new thriller, The Last Prophet.
