Since 2013, LGE has supplied approximately 120,000 tons of high quality crushed quartzite aggregates to paving projects at Minot Air Force Base, located 500 miles from Dell Rapids, SD, and 40 miles south of the Canadian border in north central North Dakota. In order for this journey to be successful, it takes coordination of many hands from start to finish. It begins with producing and handling the quartzite material to meet the exacting specifications set by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Scheduling and cleaning railcars before and after shipping 75-car unit trains to Minot is a critical step and must coincide with all other day-to-day shipments. The D&I Railroad takes the unit trains from Dell Rapids, SD, to Sioux Falls, SD, and hands them off to BNSF Railway. BNSF rails them to Surrey, ND. At Surrey, Dakota Midland Grain receives the unit trains and integrates the unloading into their grain load-out schedule. Herzog Railroad Services, Inc. unloads the railcars with car-topper excavators into trucks. Dahl Trucking hauls the material 30 miles to the paving contractor’s site at Minot Air Force Base. The materials are stockpiled, ready for paving. Currently, LGE ships approximately 5,500 tons of aggregates to Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, SD (over 350 miles). From production to trucking, planning and coordinating schedules is critical when reaching out long distances to provide the highest quality products and services. Working with great partners makes it all possible. LLegar...
