MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD AND PRESIDENT AND CEO

2019 marked Easter Seals Ontario’s 97th anniversary. Although the world has changed considerably since our founding in 1922, Easter Seals will continue building on the success of the past 97 years with a focus on developing scale with sustainability — reaching even more children and their families with support, hope and lasting change. This past year, we moved forward with several initiatives identified in our strategic plan, and we are proud of the momentum we gained in a number of key areas. Some of the accomplishments included: • the development of a new dedicated

Services website with extensive informationon our programs as well as on otherexternal resources for parents;

• a generous donation allowed us toimplement Camp Brain, a platform thatwill help support camp nurses in providinghealthcare to campers as well as streamlinethe camp registration process;

• expansion of Easter Seals’ presence in PeelRegion and the Guelph, Kitchener/Waterlooarea with staff as well as some majorfundraising initiatives;

• an extensive staff training program toenhance organizational effectiveness withfunding by a one-time government grant;

• a greater emphasis on advocacy and publicawareness efforts, including fosteringconversations with various governmentofficials on the topics of special educationand how we can work together to improvethe system of service for families.

In order to serve more children and families and to do so in a way that truly lasts, Easter Seals must innovatively grow and diversify its base of

support. Donors now prefer giving to specific projects and services using online tools. This is our biggest challenge in the years to come:

connecting with the next generation of donors who were raised in a digital

world. With so many platforms available, there is tremendous opportunity to cultivate

an entirely new group of donors and engage them in our cause. As a charity completely dependent on donor contributions, this year we were, once again, unable to meet all the requests for our equipment funding program. With fewer funding options available to families, this is clearly an area of desperate need. The impact of the equipment we help families purchase is significant and can often be life-changing. A wheelchair and ramp provide a boy with the independence to leave the house on his own to hang out with friends. A bath chair allows a teenage girl to experience the dignity of having a bath on her own without her parents’ assistance. A stander helps a child build muscle and alleviates the pain of having to sit all day. These are just a few reasons why we are focused on generating new revenue opportunities to direct more funds to this program. Our fully accessible summer camp programs continue to receive high praise from both campers and parents. Support from local service clubs and other supporters allow us to maintain our two camps to the highest standards. We are excited to work with our new Camp Directors at Camp Woodeden and Camp Merrywood to offer exciting and memorable experiences for campers in the coming summers. Community support is at the heart of all Easter Seals is able to accomplish. We owe

2019 Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador GRAHAM BASKIN

This past year has been a very incredible experience as a Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador. I have been very busy volunteering and attending many events for Easter Seals across the GTA and Ontario.

My favorite part of being a Provincial Ambassador was going to the various events and meeting the donors, fundraisers and sponsors of Easter Seals. I learned early on that this organization can’t go without the help from all of the awesome donors. Every time I got the chance to meet a donor or supporter, I knew that it was important and worth my time because they are helping to achieve all of Easter Seals’ amazing goals.

My most memorable moment happened at the beginning of my term at the Rogers Conn Smythe Dinner in 2019. I was incredibly nervous to get up in front of a crowd and talk about myself. I had never had a role like this prior to joining Easter Seals. At the start, the event seemed overwhelming and very crazy as an introduction to becoming an Ambassador. Soon enough, I adapted and started enjoying it much more. When I got into the room and met the celebrities that would be joining us at the head table, my nerves soon went away. Everyone was so nice and funny, I never had time to worry because I was too busy laughing and talking. I came out of the first event not feeling nervous anymore; I had made a new group of friends and gained more self-confidence. This stands out for me because of all the fun I had. This event helped me realize that audience members were at these events helping support me and other Easter Seals kids too. This made me feel much more confident about my speaking role at events such as

Dancing with Easter Seals Stars and all of the Celebrity Hockey Classics.

I really enjoyed my time as the Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador in 2019. This experience has changed my life for the better; I now have new friends and new skills. Thank you to everyone at Easter Seals and in the community who made my experience so amazing!

Yours truly,

Graham Baskin 2019 Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador

2019 Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador MADISEN DEAN

This year has been crazy and I’ve had so much fun going to all the events that it’s so hard to just pick a couple great memories. But, since I have to, I would have to say my first favourite thing from this year is probably the Hamilton Dancing with Easter Seals Stars. Most of my family got to see me speak that night, and that made me feel happy and I was really excited. I also had a really good night; I danced, and it was especially fun because it was in my town!

Another amazing memory was when I was at the Rogers Conn Smythe Dinner because I met some amazing people that I never thought I’d ever meet, and I felt accepted in a way I’ve never felt before. That was the night it finally sunk in that I was going to be the 2019 Provincial Easter Seals Ambassador, and that was an amazing feeling. I read my speech and got a standing ovation, which I wasn’t expecting at all. It felt amazing to look out into the crowd of about 700 people and know they were there supporting me and my co-ambassador while we were helping kids be kids! Seeing all those people, and having them know my story and how Easter Seals has changed my life and

made me feel I was doing good for them.

Being the Easter Seals Provincial Ambassador has not only allowed me to

get my story out to help others who need help from Easter Seals but also changed me for the better. I also think it has made me more confident in myself. I’m so glad I got to have the experiences that I did and, I feel so happy I got to meet so many amazing people!

2019 was one of the best and most important years I’ve had and that is

thanks to Easter Seals giving me this opportunity. So, thank you for giving me

this chance to be the Provincial Ambassador of 2019!

Funding for Equipment for Children and Youth

Providing funding for essential mobility and accessibility equipment to help kids with physical disabilities is Easter Seals’ top priority. Children and youth with physical disabilities require mobility devices, such as walkers and wheelchairs, and accessibility equipment, such as lifts and ramps, to participate at home, in school and the community. We also help children and youth with items such as bathing and toileting equipment, which are not funded by any government program.

Easter Seals also assists families by advancing Northern Health Travel Grants for travel to medical appointments.

If you’re not in this situation, you just don’t know. There are expenses no one thinks about, something as simple as getting out of bed or using the bathroom is difficult because Emilie doesn’t have enough balance to stand or sit, so she needs a grab bar. Every step she takes on the ground she needs the support of a railing. And, there is no government funding for these types of accessibility items.— Ashley, Emilie’s mom, Easter Seals parent

Helping Families Just Be Themselves

“The stares are something you never get used to,” says Cameron’s mom, Jennifer. “Having a facial difference means whenever we go out people stare at Cameron out of curiosity. He looks different than the average child, so we spend a lot of time dealing with that, especially trying to help our younger son Callum understand. It’s difficult and you never get used to it, but we always try to be super friendly and open if people want to ask questions.” Cameron was born with extra pieces on his 9th chromosome. He is non-verbal and has severe spine curvature, hip dysplasia, low vision and facial difference. He has undergone a number of hospitalizations and surgeries. He uses a wheelchair and walker for mobility and a tablet for communication. His condition, known as Mosaid Trisomy 9, is extremely rare with only 200 other known cases worldwide. The first years of Cameron’s life were extremely difficult. “We had no medical support in our community.” However, Jennifer and her husband Stuart, persevered in finding supports and services for Cameron including Easter Seals. “The car seat and stair lift Easter Seals helped fund were huge for us,” says Jennifer. “The specialized car seat was fitted to accommodate Cameron’s body, so now Cameron can enjoy car rides comfortably, which he loves.” “After his surgery Cameron needed to be carried, but at 75 lbs he was getting too heavy for us to lift. Now that we have the stair lift, we help him onto it and he uses the leaver to move himself up. It was a life-changer.”In addition to equipment funding, Jennifer discovered Easter Seals Family Camp. “I can’t express enough how much we enjoy Family

Camp. Cameron is so happy there. He is very social, so he loves being around the other kids and counsellors as well as all the activity. For Cameron camp has carried through to his daily life. He remembers all the camp stories and songs and has connected to them on a deeper level. We go through the songs and stories at bedtime and they really help to soothe and relax him. They let him fall asleep happy.” Family Camp also offers a place where families can just relax. “There are no stares a camp. We love meeting other parents and sharing information. It’s like a feeling of ‘home’ — all our worries fade away and we can completely unwind and be ourselves.”
