We are proud to announce the 2018 Inductees to the Hillsdale High School Hall of Fame Sara Aviel [HHS ’98) was on the Mock Trial Team and the Scroll staff, led JSA, and was on the swim team. She was also honored with the Young Woman of Excellence Award given by the San Mateo Women’s Hall of Fame. Sara then earned her BA and MA in Political Science and her MBA from Yale while a lecturer on international development and humanitarian relief. During the eight years of the Obama administration, Sara served as Senior Advisor to Secretary of the Treasury, Timothy Geitner, who praised her as the “progressive conscience of the Treasury” - Director for International Economic Affairs for the National Security Council and National Economic Council - U.S. Representative to the World Bank Group – and Executive Associate Director and Chief of Staff at the Office of Management and Budget. She is currently a member of the advisory council to the African Wildlife Foundation, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Aspen Global Leadership Network. Maureen Brady [HHS ’91] was a 4-year starting pitcher for the Knights from 1988-1991. She pitched the Knights to PAL and CCS championships in 1990 and 1991 while compiling an incredible record of 116 Wins and 9 Losses. Included were 69 shutouts, 29 no hitters, and 14 perfect games, including a perfect game to win the ’91 CCS championship game. She also played for the U.S. Junior Olympic Team while at Hillsdale. At Fresno State, Maureen twice led the Bulldogs to the Women’s College World Series, was honored as an All American, and was a member of the Western Athletic Conference All Conference Team. Her 36 wins and 321 innings pitched in her junior year (1994) led the US; she was named FSU’s Female Athlete of the Year in her senior year; and she is among FSU’s Top 10 Season/Career Pitching Leaders in many categories. Maureen returned to HHS in 2009 to coach Knights softball for 3 years, and is an inductee to the SM County Sports HOF. Duke Campagna [HHS 1955-1978] lived with a commitment to integrity and purpose. He graduated from San Mateo HS and San Jose State, and earned his Master’s degree in Music Education from Stanford. He served in the Army in WW II and the Korean War. Duke was on Hillsdale’s original teaching staff in 1955 and remained at Hillsdale until retirement in 1978. He established a music program that set a standard for excellence that continues to this day. Duke’s impact as an innovator and leader of music education extended beyond Hillsdale. He founded the La Honda Music Camp and SM Rec Summer Music Program. In 1960 Duke was appointed as the SMUHSD Music Coordinator and also served as President of the California Music Educators for the Bay Section and Western States’ Division. In addition, Duke is remembered as a teacher and Program Coordinator for the American Red Cross Swimming Program from 1952-1978. Duke passed away in 2016 at the age of 95. Bill Hardwick [HHS ’59] was a multi-sport athlete at Hillsdale (basketball, baseball, track, cross country and tennis). He joined the Professional Bowlers Association tour in 1961 and amassed 18 PBA titles during his career. Bill was the first and one of only six to capture the PBA career “Triple Crown” achieved by winning the three primary PBA major tournaments. He was named PBA Player of the Year in both the 1963 (youngest ever) and 1969 (record 7 titles) seasons. Another still standing record is the score of 2165 for an eight game block he achieved in 1968. In 2008 Bill was ranked #12 on the PBA’s list of 50 greatest bowlers of the last 50 years. Bill used an unconventional grip (due to a HHS shop accident!) and was known as “The Magician” for his unusually straight, slow, Full Roller roll, and his pinpoint accuracy. He retired at 34 after developing arthritis and was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1977. Bill passed away in 2013. Jay Mathews [HHS ‘63] served as Student Body President and Chief Justice and was a member of the Knights’ Tennis Team. He attended Harvard and Occidental Colleges and is a US Army Vietnam veteran. Jay has been a highly respected education columnist and blogger for the Washington Post, his employer for 40 plus years. He is the author of seven books, including Escalante: The Best Teacher in America, Class Struggle: What’s Wrong (and Right) with America’s Best Public High Schools, and his most recent, Work Hard. Be Nice, a NY Times bestseller about the KIPP charter school network. He also created the Challenge Index to annually rank “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” Jay has won several awards for education writing including the Upton Sinclair Award as “a beacon of light in the realm of education”, the Benjamin Fine Award for Outstanding Education Reporting, and the Eugene Meyer Award for distinguished service to The Washington Post.
