W e open the season of Ordinary Time-

-the “numbered weeks”--the weeks

celebrating the hidden work of the

Holy Spirit in the world--with the reading from

Isaiah about “the suffering servant.” Israel is seen

as God’s faithful servant, suffering in its mission to

bring the entire world to the Throne of Grace--a

mission it can never ignore or it ceases to be

“Israel.” The very definition of Israel, according to

the suffering servant poems (there are a total of 4)

is “the one who brings God to the world and the

world to God.” So, we begin with a reminder of

what it means to be God’s people. Then Paul,

knowing that definition to his toe tips says, “Be

holy!” Not perfect--that’s not possible--but be in-

tent on being the sacred Self you are meant to be--

for that is how the “Light shines out.” The Gospel

reading of the Christ as the Lamb of God--to be

offered for the world closes the weekend’s medita-

tion. WE are the Body of Christ--WE are to be the

Lamb of God, offering ourselves for others--being

the Light. But we only do that by being who we are

--NOT who we are not. God doesn’t ask us to cre-

ate a new identity, rather we are asked to be

“authentically us.” Let’s try to call forth our deep-

est Truth, our best self this week.

- Fr. Bill Axe

No dice

quienes no somos.

- Padre Bill Axe

Would you like to add family members who are sick to our Sick List? Please call the Parish Office: (323) 935-8127

May God bless our Parishioners, Amen.

Cristo vino a salvarnos a

Tome-

tros tiempos. Rezo de que podamos hacer esto en

nuestras vidas y acciones.

Que tengan una semana bendita ,

Hermana Karen

I n today’s Gospel we hear John call Jesus the

“Lamb of God”, he who will take away the sins

of the world. These words are familiar to us be-

cause we hear them every time we attend Mass. What

do these words mean to you? Are you aware of the

mystery held in these words? Christ came to redeem

us through His blood, His sacrifice on Calvary. Let us

take a few moments today to thank our God for the

love He showed us by His death and pledge ourselves

to live as followers of Jesus.

Monday is Martin Luther King Juniors holiday.

We remember someone who lived the words of Christ

throughout his life. He preached and lived for the

equality of all in this nation. I was lucky to visit his

memorial in Atlanta, Georgia in Dec. It was truly

moving to visit his and his wife’s graves in the reflec-

tion pool. There are two large tombs in the middle of

the water facing an eternal flame. It is a quiet and

deeply spiritual place. The Church where his father

was pastor is next door. Martin’s funeral was held in

this little Baptist Church yet it reached far and wide.

We are given the task of keeping the equality and love

of all that he preached relevant in our times. I pray we

can do this in our lives and actions.

Have a blessed week,

Sr. Karen

"NOBODY CAN DO EVERY-THING BUT EVERYBODY CAN

DO SOMETHING"

God is good all the time all the time God is good.

Your gift of Christmas Din-ner has been served to our guests each week. Some of our guests could not wait to eat and sat on the corner and church steps to eat the hot meal. A couple of them said "the leftovers are the best" and that you can give them your left overs anytime. We have a few ham bones and turkey car-casses if a ministry or individ-ual would like to make soup or beans for our 100 guests on a Saturday in February. Contact the PC Office if anyone wants

to volunteer this act of consid-eration and kindness The S.H.A.R.E. Saturday Meal Program has been ac-tively serving our guests meals since January 2001. Many of you have shared your gifts of time and talent and served as Ministry Leaders, volunteers and supporters. By the grace of God and His send-ing wingless angels and saints in the form of the current S.H.A.R.E. Ministry Leaders Azalie N, Yolanda M and Kirlin L, dedicated volunteers, Enrique R, Flora T and her daughters, Tanya and Rosie, Concepcion and her grand-daughter Sydney, brothers Ro-

lando, Enrique and David, Maria Z and her son Joshua , Rachel J, Marion S and Norma McQ we have thrived and been able to reach out and leave imprints and impact in the lives of those guests we have been blessed to serve. In the past few years we at-tempted to reach out and be-came active in promoting fel-lowship and unity stimulation situations for our church fam-ily. We attempted to stimulate and pave the way by examples of fellowship and unity activi-ties and events. We now will pass this important spirit stimulating and faith building on and concentrate on our dedication and commitment to

serving the needs of the invisi-ble forgotten and needy in our community each Saturday and on Christmas at the dinner. Family do not be afraid to go out on the limb to lend your support for unity stimulation and faith building. May you feel God's pres-ence and gain comfort and confidence as you attempt to step out on His word and be-come an active participant in the church. Amen

Blessings,
