*Based on a household of 3.2 people and 16 flushes per day with 5.5 gpf toilets over the course of a year.
If a household replaced its old toilets with TOTO® 1.28 gallon per flush High Efficiency Toilets (HETs), it would save 24,665 gallons of water a year.* That’s a lot of water and a giant step forward in conserving one of our most precious natural resources. Other High Efficiency Toilets can sacrifice performance in an effort to save water, meaning that you have to flush more than once to get the job done—that’s hardly efficient.
At TOTO, our engineers have perfected the art of the “single flush”—using less water with no compromise. Our advanced water technologies, responsible manufacturing processes and life enhancing products are our lasting contribution to a more sustainable planet.
We call this totology. It’s our approach to everything we do. Learn more at whytotology.com

On behalf of the Southern Nevada Water Authority and the
local Las Vegas Valley community, I welcome all attendees and exhibitors from North America
and around the world to the first WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition.
Though it may be a surprise to many of you, Las Vegas—located in one of North America’s hottest, driest deserts—is a trendsetter
in the realm of water conservation and efficient use of water resources.
The Las Vegas Valley, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions in the country, receives a mere 4 inches of rain annually, on
average. Additionally, the community’s allotment of Colorado River water is by far the smallest of the seven Western states that share
the river’s flows. Faced with these challenges, the SNWA works with local residents and businesses on numerous efforts to foster
smart, efficient water use in the community.
Whether it’s offering cash rebates to remove thirsty grass and upgrade to water-smart landscaping, or assisting businesses in develop-
ing and utilizing water-efficient technologies, the SNWA continues to explore innovative new programs to promote the wisest use of
water possible in an arid urban environment.
The numbers speak for themselves: Since its inception in 1999, the community’s Water Smart Landscapes Rebate program has saved
more than 18 billion gallons of water, while businesses participating in the Water Efficient Technologies program since 2001 have
contributed a savings of more than 1 billion gallons.
By way of these and many other programs, the SNWA has emerged as a regional and national leader in facilitating the implementation
of water-efficient technologies in an urban setting. We recognize that many other communities have had equal success, and through this
conference and expo, we hope to share our experiences and achievements and help manufactures, peer agencies and regulators extend
that reach around the world.
Using water efficiently and prudently is a truly global effort, its magnitude amplified with the advent of climate change and dwindling
potable water supplies worldwide. Through WaterSmart Innovations, we all can learn from one another to help achieve long-term,
worldwide water sustainability to benefit generations to come.

Welcome to the inaugural WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition. The Southern Nevada Water Authority has gathered some of the most forward-thinking professionals to share expertise, ideas,
products, and technologies for preserving our future water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to be a co-sponsor of this event and I hope everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to network and learn more about this important issue.
Since EPA launched WaterSense® in 2006, water efficiency has become much more than the “new wave” of resource conservation. Hundreds of utilities, manufacturers, retailers, irrigation professionals, and organizations have joined our effort to transform the market for water-efficient products and services, and I’m happy to report that hundreds of plumbing fixtures have earned the WaterSense label for efficiency and performance. I congratulate all of you who have contributed to this effort, and on Thursday, October 9, we will present our first WaterSense Partner of the Year awards, honoring organizations that were exceptional WaterSense partners in 2007. We look forward to many years of collaboration, as we invite everyone to ride the “blue wave” of water efficiency into a more sustainable future.

Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas! You’re now an integral part of the world’s largest gathering of urban
water efficiency expertise. Despite being the largest event of its kind, the most valuable facet of WaterSmart Innovations (WSI)
is not scale, but diversity. Participants hail from six continents and almost every U.S. state. Collectively, they represent a broad
spectrum of professions.
Advancement of water efficiency requires support from many stakeholders. Policy-makers and water agencies cannot, and should
not, do the job alone, yet water efficiency conferences historically convened only these professions.
WSI has taken a decidedly different approach. Glance at our partners, sponsors throughout this guide. I think you’ll agree this
community of internationally recognized organizations represents the most vital stakeholders in water efficiency.
Over these three days, you have the opportunity to interact with the world’s water efficiency experts. You’ll discover some
packaged solutions, but I urge you to engage your peers and explore new ideas while you’re here. Innovation often comes from
weaving your own creativity and knowledge into that of others. Whether you’re an expert or a novice, your participation in WSI
helps advance urban water efficiency.
Thanks for joining us.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Ibn Al-Hussein of Jordan to deliver opening session
keynote address at WaterSmart Innovations
His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Ibn Al-Hussein of Jordan, who as chairman of the kingdom’s Royal Water Committee is
active in water resource management and alternative resource development, will be the keynote opening session speaker
at the inaugural WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition, Wednesday, October 8.
HRH Prince Feisal chairs the water committee that his brother, King Abdullah II, created earlier this year to upgrade
Jordan’s water strategy and develop policies and programs in light of the kingdom’s scarce water resources.
A recent World Bank report noted that Jordan is one of the world’s 10 most water-deprived nations. According to the United States Agency for International
Development, the average Jordanian has access to fewer than 200 cubic meters of water, or less than 53,000 gallons annually. In contrast, the average U.S.
citizen has more than 9,000 cubic meters, or about 2.4 million gallons, of fresh water available per year. Exacerbating Jordan’s water challenges is its growing
population, expected to double by 2029.
In addition to his commitment to efficient use of Jordan’s limited water resources, HRH Prince Feisal is head of the Jordanian Olympic Committee and serves as a
Lieutenant General in the Royal Jordanian Air Force. He graduated from Brown University in Providence, R.I., in 1985 with a degree in electrical engineering, and
has been a supervisor and advisor to Royal Wings Airlines, a regional subsidiary of Royal Jordanian Airlines, since 1995.
Acclaimed climatologist Dr. Jonathan Overpeck
The myriad effects of climate change on water supplies - ranging from drought to rising sea levels - are imposing an
expanding new set of burdens on water professionals worldwide. To help us all better understand these challenges and
how to confront them, WaterSmart Innovations is pleased to welcome Dr. Jonathan Overpeck, coordinating lead author
for the United Nations’ Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment,
as the keynote luncheon speaker on Thursday, October 9.
Dr. Overpeck is the director of the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth at the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he also is a professor of Geosciences and
a professor of Atmospheric Sciences. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Hamilton College and a Master of Science and a doctorate from Brown University. He has
published more than 120 papers on climate and the environmental sciences.
In addition to his work with the IPCC’s “Climate Change 2007” report, Dr. Overpeck also has earned the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze and Gold Med-
als and the Walter Orr Roberts award of the American Meteorological Society for his interdisciplinary research. He is a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and was
the 2005 American Geophysical Union Bjerknes Lecturer. He serves on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science Magazine.

Pennington Seeds . . . . . . . 713www.penningtonseed.com
Pennington Seed realized years ago the importance of conserving irrigation water. We began to breed cultivars that stayed green longer hence requiring less irrigation water. While working with Breeders and researchers the need arose to form a research board to evaluate which cultivars within a species is more drought tolerant. While conducting this research, a Water Star Initiative was formed www.waterstarqualified.com. The main goal of the Water Star program is to combat the rising concern of our depleting water resources. To accomplish this goal, the Water Star program is designed to recognize plants and other live goods products in the lawn and garden industry that provide a clear benefit in water conservation. Products that become Water Star qualified will have successfully met a stringent set of criteria. Therefore, consumers will be assured that any product with the Water Star qualified seal provides true water conservation benefits. Pennington Seed has taken these Water Star qualified cultivars to develop a package of seed for the retail trade, Smart Seed www.smartseed.com.

EPA’s WaterSense booth features information about the national water efficiency partnership and labeling program that offers people a simple way to make product choices that use less water—with no sacrifice to quality or product performance. The WaterSense label indicates water using products that have been tested and certified by a third party for water efficiency and performance. To date, the WaterSense label can be found on high-efficiency toilets and bathroom sink faucets and faucet accessories, with urinals and showerheads to follow in 2009. Manufacturers, retailers, distributors, water providers, government agencies, and trade asso-ciations can visit the booth to learn more about partnering with EPA to promote water efficiency and the WaterSense label. Prospective partners can check out sample tool kits and the updated WaterSense labeled products listing and fill out a partnership agreement. Consumers can stop by to learn simple steps to be water efficient and how to find labeled products.”
