Geography/Science
3rd Grade
The purpose of this instructional Powerpoint is to inform the student of the major bodies of water of the Earth along with their location.
The student will be able to identify the major bodies of water on a map and distinguishing features of the with 100% accuracy.
GLE 0307.7.1 Use information and illustrations to identify the earth’s major landforms and water bodies
GLE 0307.7.4 Design a simple investigation to demonstrate how earth materials can be conserved or recycled.
Facts about Earth’s Water
70% of the Earth’s surface is made up of water.
96.5% of the water is in the oceans
ONLY 2.5% is Freshwater.
Of the 2.5% of freshwater over half of it is frozen in glaziers and ice caps
OCEANS!
There are five oceans that surround the Earth. Arctic Ocean
Atlantic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Indian Ocean
Southern Ocean
Pacific Ocean Location: The Pacific ocean is located between the
Americas and Australia/Asia.
The Pacific Ocean is the BIGGEST Ocean for it cover 30% of the Earth’s surface.
Most of the Earth’s volcanoes are located in the Pacific Ocean Basin.
It is the home of the Great Barrier Reef, like in the movie Finding Nemo.
The Picture on the right is of coral found in the Pacific Ocean and the picture on the left is some of the Great Barrier Reef.
Atlantic Ocean
Second Biggest Ocean
Half the size of the pacific it covers about 20% of the Earth
Location: Between Eastern America and Europe and West Asia
First ocean to be crossed by ship and airplane.
Largest Island of the Earth (Greenland) is located in the Atlantic
Indian Ocean
Location: Between Africa and Austra-Asia
Known for having largest breeding grounds for humpback whales
Also known for housing a thought to be extinct fish Coelacanth is found in the warm waters off the Comoro islands between Mozambique and Madagascar
Transport route for oil from middle East Each with Asia
Arctic Ocean
Location: Around North Pole and across the Arctic circle
Many polar bears live on the artic circle and swim the artic ocean
The rare Lion’s Mane Jellyfish is found in this ocean
Has a number of natural resources fish, oil, gas, and various minerals.
The Arctic is shrinking due to global warming
Southern Ocean
Location: Around the South Pole across the Antarctic circle
Home of the emperor penguins and the wandering albatrosses
Usually it is covered ice and icebergs that break off
Has an abundance of krill due to the very low temperatures
Pollution!
Everyday people are polluting our Earth in many ways but the one way that effects the most people and creatures is the pollution of the waters.
By throwing trash in the waters it hurts the animals that live in it by having them choke or get tangled.
Oil spills have caused us to kill many animals and even our source of drinking water as well.

This video shows ways you can recycle and help the planet stay a beautiful place to live and not a mucky gross place.
Summary The planet is being polluted but you can help keep our
planet clean by recycling, reducing the amount of materials we use, and reusing things that can be used again.
