uby Fortune, 29, London

Tell us three

interesting facts about yourself?“I’m training in psychotherapy

I once appeared on Songs Of Praise as a child Fish freak me out, I don’t

trust them!”

What do you do in your spare time?

“I love going out with friends especially to gigs, I love music. I also used to be in a couple of bands, a ska band called 1-Stop Experience and a ‘country punk’ band called The Drowning Sorrows. I got to play some pretty cool places across Europe. I’m

also currently trying to get into fitness which is much

harder!”

What is the best song/album of all time?“That’s so hard! My music taste is so varied. I’m a bit of a pop punk nerd at heart though so I’m going to go

with Dookie by Greenday or And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid. Just because I have never gotten bored of them and don’t think I ever will. So many amazing songs on them that just make me smile as soon as they come on my ipod. Classics.

What was the best live show you’ve been to & why?“I loved watching Rob Zombie. I’d wanted to see him for years and the stage show had everything I had hoped for. He was so full of energy, there were horror movie clips and dancing robots. Couldn’t really ask for more! It was the tour with Manson too and I think I totally regressed back to my teens. Saying that though, seeing Rancid when they toured a few years back was amazing. I absolutely loved them that gig, I think I lost my voice a bit singing along at the top of my lungs!”

Tell us a bit about your ink?“My first tattoo was a piece of tribal on my lower spine because I’m a girl of that age! It’s a total tramp stamp. I always think I’ll cover it up but then I can’t bring myself to. Luckily my taste has moved on from there. It’s so hard to pick a favourite but I think probably the Munsters piece that I have on my thigh

Page 8: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

now, it’s huge and Baron/Lucky Bleeder did an amazing job on it. He also did my recent one which is a tribute to my mum and dad, a boxer and a teacup. I definitely want more, working onmy legs at the moment and I love that they are a bit random from old cartoons, mummies to ray guns.

You’re going out for a night on the town, what is your choice of poison?

I tend to drink vodka these days, though I am pretty keen on Sailor Jerry rum. I used to run psychobilly/rock n roll club nights in Soho and we were sponsored by them. They were messy fun nights. Though coacktails are always appreciated if you’re buying haha.”

Tell us about your funniest drunken moment?

“Probably years ago at Download with one of my best friends. We decided that since we weren’t fans of the band playing we would be nice and go buy a load of drinks for our whole group. We got bored waiting though and drank the whole lot, they came back to find us surrounded by empties. Also, when I met Ricky from Kaiser Chiefs and he made a joke about writing a song about me (Ruby) I decided I had no clue he was, looked at him like he was totally nuts and wandered off.”

Do you have any unusual habits or hobbies?“I’m a total geek for Freud so I collect things about him. I have a dress up magnet set where you can give him different outfits and a Freud action figure. I even have a picture of him on my wall. I discovered you can get Freud slippers too

Page 9: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29
Page 10: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

but I’m not sure if that’s going a bit far! I love going to his old house in London and watching stuff about him. People could probably analyse that!”

Who are you currently crushing on?“Apart from my gorgeous man, I love Mike Ness from Social Distortion. I love his style, tattoos, slicked back hair. There is something about the way he sings too, it’s so hot. Nothing wrong with an older man, and he can rock the eyeliner. “

What is your claim to fame?“Like I said in my facts I was on Songs of Praise when I was kid. It was a Children in Need special and I was singing. Things sure have changed since then! I was asked to dance on stage with Shaggy once too. Mister Lover Lover himself. So all the big names haha.”

Give us your best chat up line?“I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever used a chat up line. I’m also the worst flirt in the world, I never mastered the art! My friends have found it hilarious in the past watching me struggle. So I’ll give you my favourite cheesy one I heard, “Is your last name Jacobs? Because

Page 11: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29
Page 12: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

you’re a cracker”. Amazing.”

If you were an ice cream flavour, which would you be & why?“Phish Food (straying from the classics here haha) because its fall of all kinds of things all mixed up. I’m quite a mixed character with lots going on so I think that suits me. Chocolate fish I can handle too, that’s my sort of sealife.”

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?“Who knows! I’d love to be back making music, working as a psychotherapist, covered in tattoos and still having as much fun as I can in life. I never want to grow up so I can’t imagine I will be much different. Still goofing about and dressing like a teenager.”

Page 13: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29
Page 14: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO CATCH UP WITH THIS ROUDY BUNCH OF POP-PUNKERS FROM FOLKSTONE. THEY’VE GOT A LOT GOING ON WITH THE RELEASE OF A NEW VIDEO & WHATNOT, BUT WHY ARE YOU STILL READING THIS? LET THEM TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT! SO BOYS, FIRST OFF INTRODUCE YOURSELVES FOR THOSE WHO

HAVEN’T HEARD OF YOU?“Well, in case you didn’t read the title, we’re talk us down, we’re from Folkstone, Kent and if you like The Starting Line, early Fall Out Boy and Drive-Thru records you’ll probably enjoy our music!”

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT TO OTHER BANDS ON THE LOCAL SCENE AT THE MOMENT?

“I don’t think we’re different from other ‘local’ bands at the moment as such. We just want to work hard, write songs we and other people enjoy and have a lot of fun doing it.”

YOU’VE DROPPED A MUSIC VIDEO FOR YOUR TRACK ‘MIAMI’, BACK IN FEB, TELL US ABOUT THAT?

Page 15: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

“Well we filmed it in a freezing cold nightclub that had no heating in the middle of winter! But the response we’ve had from the track has been amazing so far! People seem to really enjoy it and we can’t ask for much more than that. It didn’t come out exactly as planned but this was our first music video so it was a big learning curve.”

& YOU WERE RECENTLY FEATURED ON BBC INTRODUCING, HOW DID THAT FEEL?“Yeah that was a really good feeling for us, it was a small milestone but its nice to know people are noticing, even my mum heard it and told me she liked the song so I feel like I’m doing something right!”

WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE BAND TO PLAY WITH SO FAR?“Favourite band has to go to Double Experience. They call themselves ‘nerd rock’ and they’re from Canada, basically a mix between fall out boy and queens of the stone age but they’re definitely the best live band we’ve played with.”

Page 16: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

HAVE YOU HAD ANY HORRIFICALLY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS ON STAGE?“I don’t think so other than getting blind drunk at some of our earlier shows and tripping over each other. We’re quite a rowdy band so that sort of thing happens a lot but we learnt a hard lesson in drinking haha!”

YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER, HAVE THERE EVER

BEEN ANY SCRAPS BETWEEN BAND MEMBERS?“Well Conor and I are brothers so the whole sibling rivalry comes out a lot but on the whole we tend to save the scraps for other people haha!”

WE’RE NOT GRACED WITH MANY OF THEM BUT WHAT WOMAN IN MUSIC ARE WE CURRENTLY CRUSHING ON?“Kesha and Katy Perry definitely. Kesha looks like she parties a lot so

I can imagine she’d be fun to hang out with once you get over the glitter everywhere.”

IF YOU COULD BE ANY OTHER BAND FOR THE DAY, WHO

“WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET STRIPPERS AND COCAINE

SO EASIWLY?!”

Page 17: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

WOULD IT BE & WHY?“Motley Crue mid 80’s hands down. Who wouldn’t want to be able to

get strippers and cocaine so easy?!”

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE AGENDA

FOR TALK US DOWN?“Well we plan on finishing off a new EP, new music videos then touring it until we get sick. Coming to a city near you soon!”

HAVE YOU GOT ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY TO THE W! READERS? “Just that saying we’d be nowhere without people listening to our music sounds like a tired cliché but it is true. Without people taking

a genuine interest in us we’d be nowhere so to everyone that’s bought our music (or illegally downloaded it!) Bought a tshirt or even just stuck around to watch us play thank you so much. We genuinely couldn’t appreciate it anymore! Stay tuned for what’s next!”

WELL THANKS DANN, MAKE SURE YOU STAY TUNED, WE’RE EXPECTING BIG THINGS TO COME FROM THESE GUYS!

“WHO WOULDN’T WANT TO BE ABLE TO GET STRIPPERS AND COCAINE

SO EASIWLY?!”

Page 18: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29
Page 19: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

We caught up with 6-piece metallers IDOLS OF APATHY, see what they had to say for themselves! SO BOYS, FIRST OFF INTRODUCE YOURSELVES FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T HEARD OF YOU? “We are a groove/tech metal band from Chelmsford/Essex that love playing music and are planning to hit the scene as hard as possible.”

YOU’RE CURRENTLY WORKING ON A NEW E.P AND SET TO RECORD IN APRIL, ANY IDEA WHEN WE CAN EXPECT TO HEAR IT? “We are looking at releasing the new E.P around July! We will be releasing a new music video

before that to give people a little taste of

what is to come!”

AND YOU RECORD ALL YOUR MATERIAL WITH AVENUE STUDIOS, CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE STUDIO AND WHY YOU HAVE CHOSE TO STAY LOYAL? “We record at Avenue Studio’s because we get on very well with the engineer and he does a very good job on making us sound good!

Page 20: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

We have a record held at the studio for one of top 3 dirtiest poo’s dispensed in the toilet!”

YOU’VE RECENTLY HAD A BIT OF A LINE UP CHANGE & HAVE A NEW DRUMMER, CAN YOU TELL US HOW THAT CAME ABOUT?“We have had pretty bad luck with finding a committed drummer but we have found the perfect match for the band in the lonely hearts section of our local newspaper!”

YOU’RE HEADING OUT ON

TOUR WITH GLORY FOR AN IDOL IN MAY, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE TOUR?“Yeah! We love hitting the road, not only do we get to meet some awesome people and see some amazing sights but we get to do what we love the most!”

HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD ANY HORRIFICALLY EMBARRASSING MOMENTS ON STAGE?“We haven’t really had any embarrassing moments on stage but during the filming of our first music video ‘Deceiver’ our

bassist attempted a bass swing and the strap broke and the bass flew across the room and hit the camera! Another embarrassing time is when the band had a few alcoholic beverages together and decided that it would be a good idea to shave all facial hair off except our moustaches. We did not look great.”

YOU SPEND A LOT OF TIME TOGETHER, HAVE THERE EVER BEEN ANY SCRAPS BETWEEN BAND MEMBERS?“The very same night as the moustache incident our bassist

Page 21: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

and guitarist had a play fight that got a bit out of hand. It was still funny to watch as our guitarist was thrown of the bed and pretty much fell asleep on impact.”

IF YOU WERE GOING TO PUT YOUR OWN FESTIVAL LINE UP TOGETHER, WHO WOULD BE ON THE BILL & WHY? “We all have slightly different music tastes so we chose a band each to play the festival these are our choices...

Jack - Northlane because Adrian

was a cross between Fergie and Jesus

Dean - Attila because they’re so hip

Tom - Erra because I just fucking love ‘em

Joe - Periphery because DjentElliott - The Chariot because those boys had energy

Stu - Deez Nuts because beatdown

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE AGENDA

FOR IDOLS OF APATHY? “We have recently teamed up with Imperial Music so we are hoping to hit many tours and shows. We are releasing our new E.P and rebranding ourselves as a band. People are going to see a new and improved IOA.”

HAVE YOU GOT ANYTHING YOU WANT TO SAY TO THE W! READERS?“Stay blessed and metal!”

Page 22: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

Day 1It seems like forever since we’ve been on the road. In fact, by our standards over the past two years, it really is. Over about 24 months we’ve played something like 150 shows around Britain + Ireland in support of our album ‘All We Left Behind’ so to have spent the last two of those months waiting impatiently for this tour hasn’t been easy for four restless souls.

We’ve been fortunate enough that, without label support, our album has now sold over a thousand copies and this tour has had the best pre-sales for a tour that we’ve ever done including a sell out London date.

All things considered spirits are good inside the tour van as we make our way, eager to meet our new tour buddies Amaryllis.

On meeting them it quickly became clear that we share a childish humour which should make for some pretty hilarious tour stories.

We can’t wait for tomorrow’s date in Newcastle!

Day 2One of the things we’re pretty hot on is going to really visit the cities we go to tour. For me, honestly, there’s nothing worse than seeing just transport and then the interior of a

Page 23: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

venue without any real context to where you are anymore. So we tend to be up early and visiting cathedrals, art galleries, even shopping malls and trying to get a feel for the place. Today we took in the Laing + and Hatton galleries in Newcastle. Highly recommend both if you’re there and you want to see some inspirational work. And so to the show. It felt great to get back on the stage. This was only our second visit to Newcastle and already I feel a kinship with the awesome madness of the people here. Exactly our kind of folk!

They came, they sang, the partied their asses off and they

were all incredibly sweet to us and made us to welcome. I honestly cannot wait to come back.

The night ended with is loading out into a full scale snow blizzard. Definitely one of the more exciting load outs we’ve done. Of course, like the mature grown ups we are a full rolling around in it ensued!Bring on the next show!

Day 3Manchester. Dear God it got cold! We spent most of the day dodging between coffee houses and bars in the vain attempt to keep warm and maintain feeling in our fingers and toes.

Page 24: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

That being said, it’s always nice on tour to return to places you’ve been before and see some friendly faces and on that front Manchester didn’t disappoint.

One of the nicest views from a stage is people singing back your lyrics. It means such a lot after travelling far, sleeping briefly and eating badly across a tour!

This actually marks the first tour we’ve been able to afford hotel rooms for which has helped immeasurably with keeping us warm and smelling a little better each day. It’s a far cry from positions we’ve been in before which saw us spend two days on a roadside in Edinburgh when a

promoter disappeared on without paying us. It may on be the Ritz, but it sorts out the four of us!

Day 4Norwich. Wow! In case anyone from the show tonight reads this I want to start by saying thank you so much again. Having never visited the city before we were made so incredibly welcome which was amazing to us!The day had started out pretty roughly as we sat on an unmoving M6 out of Manchester for 2 hours. At this point nobody had eaten and the mood was sombre at best. Massive points to our faithful bass player/driver, Fredz, for getting us through in one piece.

Page 25: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

It traditionally seems to be about this stage of the tour where people begin to find their rhythm in sleeping, eating and living in each other’s pockets. I think today really proved that under what would have been very different circumstances without our mutual support of each other. After all, as a band, we don’t do lateness. Ever. So the threat of not being on time was very testing on us.Overall I couldn’t be happier or more grateful for everything today and the endless tweets and Facebook comments asking us to come back to Norwich are so well received!

I’m even more pumped for Brighton and Londo now!

There’s something unsettling to me about about days off on tour and I honestly can’t say that I really enjoy them too much. With nowhere to be the tiredness, travel and poor dietary choices begin to catch up with people and the mood can somewhat sink into a stagnant boredom. This day, fortunately, has managed to avoid many of those familiar pit falls. Tomorrow we line up to play the largest show of this tour and the only show of the tour which we headline. To try and describe the mix of excitement and tension in my gut would be impossible, suffice to say it’s significantly present in my mind. Actually, writing about it now is doing some odd things to my stomachTruth be told we can’t wait.

Page 26: WASTED! Magazine - Issue 29

The order of the days conversations on the way down from Norwich was all about taking it easy tonight and getting enough rest but I predict that may be a little harder to do this evening than say as I go over details for tomorrow!

Today was Brighton. My God, we’ve been waiting for this! The largest show on the tour by some way and certainly the most elaborate.

The lighting was spectacular with more flashing and moving lights than anywhere we’d played on this run. We had balloons rigged to fall over the audience during the finale and the added fun and pressure of playing a brand new track.

For me, these are the shows you wait for. The shows you dream about and, almost equally therefore, the shows that come with the most inherent stress! Of course, the bigger the show the higher the stakes! Back stage is a hive of activity on such a night and this was no exception. Is everyone where they should be? Is every thing in place? Do you know where your guitar/pedals/lead/bass player is? The list is unending. When stage time rolled around the room was packed from the stage to the shadowy back of the room and we revelled in every moment!

The audience were on top form clapping, moving and singing along so loud that I could barely hear myself on the stage!

It was genuinely a privilege to be in that room and I feel so lucky to have shared it with so many wonderful people!

DISGUISE YOUR BEAUTY & MORE @ THE BULL & VIC

In Crowded Skies set us off to a good start with their catchy rock tunes, Pete Herbert and Co always convey a certain kind of passion behind their music, one of my personal favourite tracks from their set was their latest single ‘New Skin’ which had the crowd shouting their lyrics ‘Let Go!’ back in their faces before their set was finished. In Crowded Skies were quite a mellow band compared to the other two bands on the bill tonight but sometimes it’s nice to be able to enjoy a nice chilled band with a beer in hand.

Next up were Forever The Foundations who always bring the storm, raging through tracks from their latest E.P ‘Who Said Bromance Is Dead?’ and covering ‘I’m A Riot? You’re A Fucking Riot!’ by the Blackout. This is the first time they have played in Dartford since their epic E.P release show last year at Amar Hall, which was also alongside In Crowded Skies and it was business as usual for the post-harcore kids. These lot may look young but they bring it every time they hit the stage. Their rage-fueled ‘Fix Yourself’ is always a great closer to their set and shows that they know exactly what they’re all about. (7.5)

Disguise Your Beauty came all the way down from Glasgow to fill a slot at late notice and left their native Scotland at 9AM that morning, but we weren’t prepared for what the Metal Mosh Quintet we bringing to the party, they hit the stage and were firing on all cylinders, throwing themselves about like no-ones business and playing with a precision and anger that reminded me of Frank Carter when he was in Gallows. They even had their cameraman jump up and smash out a song with them which turned the anger up to 11 and the energy up to 15. Frontman Scott McCaughey climbing the speaker to let everyone know what took place that night, this is one live show that you need to see if you catch them on a date of their current UK Tour, Tell them Wasted! sent ya!
