Washburn Weekly Update December 3rd to 7th, 2018
Important remarks:
• Pre Kinder and Kindergarten will continue their regular hours from 7:30 – 2:30 pm until December 12, 2018. There will be no school on December 13; the teachers will be working on the end of semester paperwork and on the progress reports.
• Pre Kinder to 12th grade – Friday, December 14 will be the last day of class for this semester. Teachers will organize a simple “get together”. No lunch will be served, parents must pick up their children at 10:30 am.
Important information
1. Final tests will be partial for 1st to 3rd grade. For 4th to 12th grade there will be finals. This means they must include basic skills for each subject covered in the semester. The structure of the final tests will be multiple choice and critical thinking questions.
2. Reviews will include skills that will be measured in the test. Yet, those skills will not be presented in the test using the same form or structure as in the reviews.
3. Try to avoid students being absent for the finals. Any reposition will only be allowed if it is due to a justified cause.
4. The teachers will be busy in the afternoon grading tests, posting grades in the isiNet internet portal, and preparing their end-of-semester paperwork.

It was definitely a very successful event thanks to the support and assistance of the Board of Directors, administration, staff, students, and parents. Please be reminded that our Toy Drive is still in effect. We will be collecting toys until the last day of school. You can bring your toys to the school to the main office. Thank you in advance for your continuous support of our initiatives.
On December 5 to Dec 7 students will be reviewing for the upcoming final exams, which are scheduled from December 10 to December 12. The last day of classes will be December 14. This week I will be involved in the following: 1. Meeting with administrative team 2. Continue working on the creation of the guidelines for a Student Advisory Council composed by one representative from each grade in the secondary level (7 to 12 grades) 3 Continue working with the teachers and support staff to complete information on the school’s website 4. Conducting formative classroom visits 5. As usual, I do my daily walk arounds in the school premises. 6. Assist the School Board in searching for teachers and support staff to fill future vacancies. 7. Meet with parents and teachers Have a great week and many blessings to you! ****************************************************************************** Mr. Ronnie Lopezcepero, M.Ed., M.S., M.A Board Member and Neuroscience Teacher, Washburn School English Professor, Washburn English Institute Neuroscience Role: On Thursday we will be having some time to have repositions for all the students who have missed quizzes due to excused absences. Neuroscience is an elective; therefore, we will not have a final for the class. Board Member Role : I want to personally congratulate all of our teachers and staff members for their role in our Encendido Borincano. We all decorated, practiced with our students, and at times even prepared in the hot sun to make sure everything went smoothly Friday evening. We have a family of dedicated staff members who love to provide the best quality education your child can have. Message to Parents: Dear Washburn Community, Smart phones and other technologies, alongside the rise of social media has completely changed the way we communicate, share information, and socialize. Together, they transformed the world, for better and for worse. We have had massive innovation and disruption, and there is some collateral damage, some of which we have yet to understand and realize. We are particularly worried when we see parents using such devices to entertain or pacify children. Studies from the journal of pediatrics of the Boston University School of Medicine suggest that this might have a detrimental effect on their social and emotional development. “If these devices become the predominant method to calm and distract young children, will they be able to develop their own internal mechanisms of self-regulation?” Guess what happens in the classroom when they do not have a video game or YouTube to distract them? Schools are the battleground for discussions about the role of these technologies in our children. We have to discuss the role schools and parents have in monitoring the use of technology as we start to understand the darker impulses and the effects on their young developing brain. These technologies are powerful tools for learning! They are also objects of distraction in our classrooms and at home. It often allows for anonymous behaviors that make most of us cringe.
The American Journal of Epidemiology, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Journal of Pediatrics have all published studies on the negative effects of social media and too much screen time for children and teens. Internet Addiction is proposed as a disorder in the most recent update of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Children and teens are vulnerable during critical developmental stages that can affect their ability to learn and socialize. While our firewalls at Washburn School are in place to control and monitor internet access via our systems. Yet they do not govern your cellular or data plans, which act as surrogate and go around from our high-powered protections. These areas are simply beyond our control including the use they have at home. We see too many bad online choices, especially among the new in upper elementary and middle school students. It is important that all parents take control of your child’s online experience. Their safety and positive moral development are more important than their right of privacy, no matter how much they might whine and groan in anger. We recommend that parents install and activate parent controls for all cellular and wireless devices and even monitor screen time while they play Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, mobile games or PlayStation. I strongly recommend that you install and activate parental controls on all devices and monitor what they actually do while they play FORTNIGHT (video game that should not be played under age 13), for example. Limit their playing time and have them read and socialize in the real world. As an educator, I strongly recommend that for all children under the age of 15 should have their devices collected before bed-time each night. Set a nightly turn-in time for phones, laptops, tablets and any device where you can GAME. You have every right and RESPONSIBILITY to establish usage rules and family expectations for online behavior. This is not being an overprotective parent. This is being a responsible parent that monitors what they pay for your children. This is taking care of the mental health that can go well into their adult years. We made these flyers for guidelines to our community in Spanish and in English, yet even after age six we should set strict restrictions that are very similar to the ones recommended in the pictures below. Have them read a book or read to them, engage in rough and tumble play or just merely let them learn how to get bored and to cope with the emotions that come with boredom! You will be surprised at how resourceful and creative they become. Kind regards, Ronnie Lopezcepero, M.Ed., M.A, M.S. Educational and Business Development (Board Member)
Excelente semana. ******************************************************************************
Sra. Magaly Jiménez Peña Trabajadora Social Estimados padres, madres y estudiantes:
