What are Warts?

• A Wart is a growth that develops on the skin and grows. It can grow inward or outward, cause a lot of problems, or not have much of an effect.

• The growth develops when Keratin, on the top layer of the skin, begins to grow to fast.

• Warts are often small and the same color as the skin, but this can vary depending on type and severity.

The Common Wart• Appear either alone or in groups

most commonly on hands, though they can be anywhere on the body.

• Usually are rough in texture, gray/brown, and dome shaped.

Plantar Warts• Plantar Warts can develop on

any part of the FOOT. These warts are just beneath the skin’s surface. When pressure from standing or walking on the wart persists, a layer of thick, tough skin begins to develop over the wart. This causes the wart, as well as the callus-like skin to get larger, and walking to become painful.

• Feels like walking with a pebble in your shoe.

Page 5: Warts

Flat Warts• Found on the Face,

arms, or legs, and are very small in size.

• There are often many in one area rather than just one alone.

• Have flat tops and can be pink, light brown, or light yellow.

• Spread by shaving usually.

Page 6: Warts

Filiform Warts• Type of Flat

Wart.• Grow around

mouth, nose, and beard area.

• Surface is flesh colored and finger shaped.

Page 7: Warts

Periungual Warts• Found under and

around toenails and fingernails.

• Appear as rough, irregular bumps.

• Periungual Warts will affect nail growth.

• If severe, nail will have to be removed.

Page 8: Warts

Genital Warts

• Can be very small and difficult to detect.

• Grow only on the Genital areas of the body.

Page 9: Warts

Diagnosis• A Dermatologist, (skin doctor) can easily diagnose

a wart and what type it is simply by looking at it. Very rarely does a dermatologist need to perform a skin biopsy to be certain.

Page 10: Warts

What Causes Warts?• Warts are caused by a virus that infects the skin; most

commonly HPV, or Human Papilloma Virus.• The Virus enters the skin after direct contact with

recently shed viruses or by direct contact with an person who is infected.

• Entry site of the virus is often the approximate area of a recent injury.

• Incubation time can be one to eight months.

Contrary to Popular Belief…

• TOUCHING OR KISSING A FROG WILL NOT GIVE YOU WARTS.

Treatments• Cantharidin: causes blister under wart, doctor clips away the

dead wart.• Cryotherapy: most common treatment; freezes the wart.

Can cause dark spots and often needs repeat treatments.• Electrosurgery and Curettage: burning and cutting of the

wart.• Excision: Doctor cuts out the wart from the skin.• Laser Treatment: usually only used if warts have not

responded to other treatments.• Bleomycin: injection of an anti-cancer medicine. • Immunotherapy: uses patients own immune system to fight

the warts.

Prognosis

• THERE IS NO CURE FOR WARTS. THEY CAN RETURN AT THE SAME SITE OR APPEAR IN A NEW SPOT AT ANY TIME.
