The competition between Ford and Chevy trucks has extended to the American flag. Just two months after Chevy set the world record for hauling a flag, Ford beat it. Ford set the Guinness World Records title for the World’s Largest Flag Pulled by a Moving Vehicle with a 2017 Ford F-450 Su- per Duty pulling a 4,124-square- foot U.S. flag. The record was set on Nov. 19 at the Homestead-Miami Speed- way’s 1.5-mile track, said Ford spokesman Matt Fancett. The record eclipses the previ- ous mark set earlier this year by Chevrolet with a 3,200-square- foot flag at Texas Motor Speed- way on Sept. 28, Fancett said. With its 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel V8 producing a best- in-class 925 lb.-ft. of torque and 440 horsepower. “The F-450 displayed an excep- tional level of towing power that Ford truck owners have come to expect from the top-selling truck series in America,” said Fancett. “At Ford and with Ford trucks in particular,” said Doug Scott, Ford Truck Group Marketing manager, “we are used to being number one. “Towing the largest banner and setting the Guinness World Record in the category certainly fits with our DNA and what we are all about when we talk about Ford trucks and their towing power. “This is a great accomplish- ment, another to add to the list of distinctions. Earlier this week, we received the 2017 Motor Trend Truck of the Year award, so we will add this to the list.” Ford is no stranger to patriotic displays at Ford Championship weekend, utilizing the F-Series line of trucks to fly the U.S. flag as part of pre-race activities since 2003, Fancett said. To set the record, the truck had to travel beyond the 100 meters (328 feet) previous record mark without the flag touching the ground, Fancett said. 4,124-square-foot American flag flaps in the wind as Ford F-450 Super Duty pickup sets Guinness World Record. ® Tech Center News ® VOL. 41 NO. 12 NOVEMBER 28, 2016 Covers the Tech Center and the Immediate Area WARREN, MICHIGAN View This Week’s Edition at http://TechCenterNews.com [email protected] by Jim Stickford SUVs are becoming more pop- ular than traditional sedans, and that’s not likely to change any- time soon. Speaking at the Detroit Section of the Society of Automotive En- gineers’ (SAE) November dinner at the San Marino Club in Troy Nov. 17, James Chandra said that, as the Acadia’s product manager, it was his job to improve the ve- hicle because of the public’s de- mand for SUVs. “The program for the new Aca- dia got its start back in 2012,” Chandra said. “Fun facts about the GMC brand. Cooperation can breed suc-cess. Just ask the folks at Chevro-let, GMC and Power Solutions In-ternational, Inc. (PSI)Chevrolet and GMC are part-

nering with PSI to introduceheavy-duty pickups and full-sizevans powered by 6.0-liter V8compressed natural gas (CNG)and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG)-capable engines starting inthe first quarter of 2017.Chevrolet also will offer CNG

and LPG versions of its new LowCab Forward commercial truck. This move follows the selec-

tion of PSI, based in Wood Dale,Ill., as General Motors Fleet’s pre-ferred upfitter for CNG and LPGtrucks, said GM spokeswomanEmily Moran. PSI is one of NorthAmerica’s largest and most expe-rienced providers of integratedturnkey alternative-fuel power-train solutions.Ship-through will be offered, al-

lowing customers to seamlesslyorder and take delivery from thesame dealer. GM will supply vehi-cles equipped with the 6.0L V8engine with hardened valves andvalve seats to PSI, which in turnwill install the fuel system andother hardware and ship directlyto Chevrolet and GMC dealers inall 50 states. All PSI-modified vehicles are

covered by Chevrolet and GMC’sfive-year/60,000-mile (whichever

comes first) limited powertrainwarranty. The expanded lineup brings

GM Fleet’s portfolio of alterna-tive fuel, hybrid and EVs to morethan a dozen trucks, cars andcrossovers.Other recent additions include

the Chevrolet Bolt EV, a Duramax2.8-liter B20-capable Duramaxdiesel for the Chevrolet Expressand GMC Savana vans and newavailable 6.6-liter B20-capableDuramax diesel engines for theChevrolet Silverado HD and GMCSierra HD.“Expanding choice is the key

to helping more commercial andgovernment fleets reduce theirfuel consumption, fuel costs andemissions using alternative fuelsand EVs versus using traditionalgasoline,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vicepresident of GM Fleet. “There areno ‘one size fits all’ solutions forfleet managers.”GM Fleet’s partnership with

PSI follows customer demandand ongoing investment by com-panies across the nation in CNGrefueling infrastructure. In November, the U.S. Depart-

ment of Transportation’s FederalHighway Administration (FHWA)announced 55 routes that willserve as the basis for a nationalnetwork of “alternative fuel” cor-ridors spanning 35 states.Though the network is nearly

85,000 miles long, more miles willbe added in the future to accom-modate electric, hydrogen, propane and natural gas vehiclesas additional fueling and charg-ing stations are built. Currently, four of the top five “GreenFleets,” as identified by Bobit Me-dia Group, operate CNG-poweredvehicles. All of the top 25 fleetsuse at least two fuels.Expanding Alternative Fuel Ve-

hicle options, including 2017 and2018 models, Chevrolet and GMCwill offer more than 25 differentcars, trucks and vans that use

alternate fuels or electric propul-sion.CNG and LPG models are:• Chevrolet – Express Cargo

2500, 3500 and 4500, Express Pas-senger 2500 and 3500, SilveradoHD, Low Cab Forward 3500 and4500;• GMC – Savana Cargo 2500,

GM Offers Fleet Customers Various Fuel Alternatives

by TOM KRISHERAP Auto Writer

DETROIT (AP) – U.S. auto safe-ty regulators are allowing Gener-al Motors to delay a large recallof potentially defective air bags, giving the company time toprove that the devices are safeand to possibly avoid a huge fi-nancial hit.The unusual move by the Na-

tional Highway Traffic Safety Ad-ministration buys time for anoutside company hired by GM todo long-term tests of Takata airbag inflators in older trucks andSUVs, including GM’s top-sellingvehicle, the Chevrolet Silveradopickup.GM reluctantly agreed to recall

2.5 million vehicles in May to re-place Takata front passenger in-flators.But the company said at the

time its inflators are unique andsafer than those linked to 11deaths in the U.S. and as manyas 16 worldwide. The company petitioned for

the delay in mid-November andthe government agreed on Nov.21.The decision delays the recall

until Aug. 31, 2017. If GM canprove to NHTSA that the infla-tors are safe by that time, the re-call could be canceled. The recall covered the Silvera-

do, GMC Sierra pickup and manypopular full-size SUVs from the2007 to 2011 model years. Some of the trucks are now

older than the minimum sixyears that it takes for Takata in-flators to deteriorate and be-come risky. But GM contends its tests so

far show that they are safe for atleast 3-1/2 more years. The testing could help GM

fend off several recalls totaling6.8 million trucks and SUVS withthe same inflators that ultimate-ly could cost the company $870million, according to a GM filingwith securities regulators. An-other batch of recalls is slated tostart on Dec. 31.The delay also pushes the de-

cision into the administration ofPresident-elect Donald Trump, who has stated that he wants toget rid of unnecessary govern-ment regulation.GM said the timing of its filings

was motivated by upcomingNHTSA deadlines. “Any otherconclusion is just speculation,’’spokesman Tom Wilkinson saidin a company statement.Takata uses the chemical am-

monium nitrate to create a smallexplosion and quickly inflate airbags in a crash. But tests have shown the

chemical can deteriorate whenexposed to high temperaturesand airborne moisture. That canmake it burn too fast, blowingapart a metal canister designedto contain the explosion, flingingshrapnel into drivers and pas-sengers.In addition to the deaths, more

than 100 people have been hurtby the exploding inflator canis-ters.

The Salvation Army of MetroDetroit kicked off the holidayseason on Nov. 18 with the annu-al lighting of the Big Red Kettle indowntown Detroit. This year, said Salvation Army

spokeswoman Andrea Kenski, the group’s goal is to raise $8.4million through its Red KettleFundraising Campaign through-out Wayne, Oakland and Ma-comb counties.“The need is great,” Kenski

said. “The campaign begins onthe heels of new data from theU.S. Census Bureau reportingthat while metro Detroit’s medi-an household income increasedmore than two percent, povertyrates remained flat at 16 percent.“Among communities with

more than 65,000 residents, De-troit continued to post some ofthe nation’s highest povertyrates at nearly 40 percent.”Detroit’s poverty rate for chil-

dren was higher at 58 percent,Kenski said. But Detroit is not alone. Oak-

land and Macomb Counties havealso experienced spikes in pover-ty levels since the recession in2008. According to the BrookingsInstitute, one in three poor Amer-icans – about 16.4 million people– lives in the suburbs.“Red kettle donations during

the campaign are vital in ensur-ing the organization can contin-ue providing more than 2.7 mil-lion meals and more than 652,000nights of shelter that are the hall-marks of The Salvation Army,”Kenski said.“But they also provide critical

funding for after-school andcamp programs for children, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and programs to help familiesbreak the cycle of poverty andwork toward financial stability.”The Salvation Army combats

poverty without discrimination, using the funds raised during the

Red Kettle Campaign throughoutthe year, Kenski said.Through a combination of

grassroots fundraising and spe-cial events, the organization en-gages supporters across metroDetroit while ensuring that thefunds stay in the communities inwhich the donations have beenmade.

and the front and rear bumpershave been modified for better off-road clearance.”The ZR2’s class-exclusive fea-

tures include front and rearelectronic locking differentials, available diesel engine, and thefirst off-road application of Multi-matic Dynamic SuspensionsSpool Valve (DSSV) damper tech-nology.As a result, Doran said, the Col-

orado ZR2 delivers exceptionalperformance in a variety of sce-narios – from technical rockcrawling to tight two-track trailsto high-speed desert running todaily driving.“Our engineers have been in-

credibly successful developingCorvette and Camaro perform-ance variants with broad per-formance envelopes,” said MarkReuss, executive vice president,Global Product Development,Purchasing and Supply Chain.“The ZR2 applies that same

philosophy to off-road perform-ance. You can go rock crawlingon Saturday, desert running onSunday, and comfortably drive towork on Monday.“This truck can do it all, and

do it all well.”To achieve this balance of on-

and off-road performance, Reusssaid, the Chevrolet engineeringteam turned to a new and “sur-prising” partner in creating theZR2’s dampers, which are theheart of any off-road truck.

The 2017 Chevrolet ColoradoZR2 will be the first applicationof Multimatic DSSV damper tech-nology to an off-road vehicle.Multimatic Inc., based in

Markham, Ontario, is a maker ofhigh-performance DSSV dam-pers as used in championship-winning motorsport vehicles, in-cluding Formula One winners. The first volume production

vehicle to use DSSV damperswas the 2014 Chevrolet CamaroZ/28.“From our experience on Z/28,

we knew the performance advan-tages offered by DSSV dampers,”said Mark Dickens, executive di-rector of Chevrolet’s Perform-ance Variants, Performance Partsand Motorsports Engineering.“We also know that Multimat-

ic’s motorsport developmentmentality would allow us to bringa uniquely precise and repeat-able custom damper to marketeven more quickly than a tradi-tional damper system.”Compared to deflected-disk

valving common on mostdampers, the ZR2 employsspool valves that offer increasedprecision and manufactur-ing repeatability along with en-hanced ride and handlingperformance both on- and off-road, Dickens said. The Colorado ZR2’s DSSV

dampers are position-sensitive,Dickens said. Their aluminumbodies each house two spoolvalves providing both compres-sion and rebound damping opti-mized for everyday driving.

For years, the automotive in-dustry has been talking about in-troducing mild hybrid systemsbased on 48-volt technology. That day has come, said Conti-

nental spokesman ThomasRecke.Continental, which has its

North American headquarters inAuburn Hills, has now begunvolume production of the firstlow-voltage hybrid drive, whichwill be introduced by French car-maker Renault (model: RenaultScenic Hybrid Assist) by year-end 2016.The first production solution

combines an efficient, water-cooled induction motor with anintegrated inverter, Recke said. The electric motor transmitspower via a belt drive directly tothe crankshaft of the combustionengine – an arrangement referredto by experts as “P0 topology.”Further production ramp-ups aresoon to be set in motion on thebasis of a modular system for 48-volt drives.“We are proud that we were

able to secure Renault as the firstcustomer for our innovative 48-volt drive,” said Juergen Wiesen-berger, head of Hybrid ElectricVehicles at Continental NorthAmerica. “Other productionlaunches for both diesel andgasoline vehicles are in thepipeline for North America, Eu-rope and China.”Wiesenberger said the market

for 48-volt drives will experiencesignificant growth in the comingyears.“In 2025, approximately one in

five new vehicles across theworld will be equipped with a 48-volt drive,” Wiesenberger said.48-volt is considered a pro-

gressive technology, as the lowvoltage compared with conven-tional hybrid vehicles enablesconsiderable savings in fuel con-sumption in return for moderateadditional costs, Recke said.As a result, Continental antici-

pates that market penetrationwill be rapid, with four millionvehicles with low-voltage hybriddrives to be produced worldwidein 2020, Recke said. For 2030, thetechnology supplier’s expertsforecast a global market of asmany as 25 million new vehicles.During development of the

modular system, the engineers atContinental placed great empha-sis on achieving a high degree ofefficiency for the overall system, simple adaptation to existing ve-hicle powertrain designs, andhighly automated, cost-effectiveproduction.

The efficiency of a 48-volt sys-tem is largely dependent on theamount of drive and recoveryoutput available in continuousoperation, Recke said. Continen-tal has chosen to employ a wa-ter-cooled induction motor thatcan be connected directly to theengine’s cooling circuit. This makes it possible to as-

semble a machine that, depend-ing on the version, can continu-ously provide an output of sixkilowatts and torque of 60 new-ton meters, all in the installationspace of a conventional starteralternator. By using a belt drive,up to 150 newton meters can betransmitted to the crankshaft.Within the modular system, onlythe length of the motor changesthe power. The inverter, based on a metal-

oxide-semiconductor field-effecttransistor (MOSFET), is integrat-ed in the housing lid, whichsaves space. The modular sys-tem from Continental also in-cludes a AC/DC converter, whichenables the 48-volt system to beconnected to the vehicle’s on-board power supply. This makesit possible to use some of the en-ergy stored in the lithium-ionbattery to stabilize the on-boardpower supply as well.Simple adaptation to existing

powertrain designs is a majorbenefit of the P0 concept thatContinental has pursued. It en-ables the load point of the com-bustion engine to be shifted. Thefuel savings demonstrated in testvehicles are considerable, with afigure of 13 percent in the NewEuropean Driving Cycle. In real-world use – especially in cities –the savings are even higher dueto the greater share of drivingspent in energy recuperationphases and can reach up to 21percent.This is helped by the fact that

the combustion engine can beswitched off when the vehicle ap-proaches traffic lights, starting atspeeds below 13 mph. The com-bustion engine is always startedwith the 48-volt drive within just0.2 seconds – a conventionalstarter needs roughly twice asmuch time, Recke said. When the48-volt drive is combined with adiesel engine as in its first pro-duction application, there is anadditional effect. This is because the nitrogen

oxide emissions produced dur-ing acceleration from low enginespeeds fall by up to 10 percent,as some of the necessary torqueis generated via the electric mo-tor.

BorgWarner’s advanced enginetiming system drives the new,Alfa Romeo all-aluminum 2.0-litergasoline engine. The Alfa Romeo exclusive en-

gine makes its debut in the new2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Giu-lia Veloce premium mid-sizesedan, said BorgWarner spokes-woman Katya Pruett.“This 2.0-liter Alfa Romeo en-

gine delivers 280 HP and 400 Nmof torque, allowing it to launchfrom 0 to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 149mph,” Pruett said.“BorgWarner’s engine timing

system includes the company’snext-generation silent timingchain for direct-injected, boostedengines, and helps Fiat ChryslerAutomobiles reach its challeng-ing engine performance goals.”“We are very pleased,” said Joe

Fadool, president and generalmanager, BorgWarner Morse Sys-tems, “to expand our successfulbusiness with FCA by supplyingAlfa Romeo with our sophisticat-ed engine timing solutions, as wehave for other FCA engine seriessince 2010.”

“At BorgWarner, we under-stand how various complex en-gine timing components interactwith each other. This enables usto deliver leading integrated sys-tems solutions specifically tunedand optimized for each customerapplication.”BorgWarner’s engine timing

system is designed to reducemass and friction for improvedfuel economy and engine efficien-cy, Fadool said. The advanced chain has high-

quality finishing links and opti-mized chain link profiles andpins for improved wear perform-ance.Featuring a precisely designed

geometry to reduce mass, Borg-Warner’s silent timing chain of-fers best-in-class strength anddurability as well as the lowestnoise, vibration and harshnesson the market, Pruett said.As a systems supplier, Borg-

Warner delivers numerous com-ponents for engine timing sys-tems, such as chains, tensionersand cam phasers, facilitating ahighly tuned engine for optimaltiming.

Reducing Mass, Friction

With Christmas fast approach-ing, many people realize how for-tunate they are for their familiesand their health. However, one local family is

fighting for their son’s life.10-year-old Thomas Maier,

grandson of a retired police offi-cer, was born with a congenitalheart defect known as Tetralogyof Fallot. As a result, he has beenthrough 6 open-heart surgeriesand numerous heart catheteriza-tions in the past 10 years. In May 2016, Thomas went to

Nationwide Children’s Hospitalin Columbus, Ohio for a possibleMelody heart valve placement, which would improve his condi-tion. Unfortunately, the place-ment attempt failed. The Maierswere told that Thomas’s condi-tion had advanced to the pointwhere they anticipated he onlyhad 3 to 5 more years to live. While at Nationwide Children’s

Hospital, they were given anoth-er treatment option – a heart-lung transplant. Prior to this, theMaiers had been told thatThomas was not a viable candi-date for this surgery. Because ofhis numerous procedures andblood transfusions, Thomas’santibody count is extremelyhigh, which can make rejectionmore likely. Fortunately, this isan obstacle that the doctors atNationwide are willing to tackle.

The next step was to giveThomas chemotherapy medica-tion. Such medications are typi-cally given to blood cancer pa-tients to stop the production ofthe B and T cells which producethe antibodies. After receivingthe results of Thomas’s bloodtests, doctors found no sign ofthe B cells or plasma markers.Unfortunately, the treatmentswere not successful.Starting the week after Thanks-

giving, the Maiers will be headingto Mott Children’s Hospital inAnn Arbor where Thomas willbegin a new form of treatmentknown as Plasmapheresis; aprocess that removes the plas-ma, which contains the antibod-ies, from the blood and replacesit with a substitute. If the anti-body numbers aren’t lowered, itwill make it harder to find a vi-able donor and increase the waittime. If all goes well in Ann Arbor,

doctors are hoping to putThomas on the transplant listsoon. Once on the list, Thomasand his father Jeff will be living inColumbus, Ohio, at the RonaldMcDonald House across the

street from the hospital. (Whileon the transplant list, Thomasmust be within a 3-hour radius ofthe hospital.) Recently, Thomas’sfather, Jeff, left his job to help outwith doctor appointments andcare for Thomas full-time. His sis-ter Abby and mother Karin willbe staying in Michigan so thatAbby can continue her schoolingand Karin can work and keeptheir medical insurance intact. The average wait time for a

heart and lung transplant is 4-6months; however, the doctorsanticipate Thomas’s wait will belonger due to his antibody is-sues. Once Thomas receives thetransplant, they’ll have to stay inthe Columbus area for 6 monthsor more for close monitoring andrehabilitation. In total, Jeff andThomas anticipate being in Ohiofor at least a year or more.Friends and family are doing

everything to help, but morehelp is needed. The Maiers havestarted a fundraiser at youcar-ing.com to ease the financial bur-den of medical and living expens-es during their stay in Columbus. Those interested in helping

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) – Jim-mie Johnson walked across thestage after driver introductionsto find his car inexplicably miss-ing from pit road.In a dramatic start to his race

for a record-tying seventh cham-pionship on Nov. 20, Johnsonlearned NASCAR’s inspectorshad yanked his Chevrolet off thepre-race grid and sent it backthrough tech. The Hendrick Motorsports

team had been accused of ma-nipulating a body panel, andJohnson had to start last in thefield. In less than 30 laps, he was

sniffing the top-10.“He came from last doing

that?” Joey Logano asked histeam, “Wow.”The best was yet to come. For most of the day, Johnson

was the worst of the champi-onship contenders in a winner-take-all season finale at Home-stead-Miami Speedway. He need-ed only to beat three other driv-ers to tie Richard Petty and DaleEarnhardt with a record seventitles, but he was clearly not inthe same league as the otherfinalists Nov. 20.Johnson, who seemed to have

sensed the last 10 weeks that hewas finally going to grab thatspecial seventh title, never pan-icked.“I felt like something was going

to happen, and I was going to beOK with it,” Johnson said. “For awhile, I came to grips with the re-ality of (finishing) third, fourth, somewhere in there and shakingsomebody else’s hand and beinghappy for them.“Then it changed so quick at

the end.”Johnson was practically gifted

his seventh title when Carl Ed-wards’ aggressive attempt to winthe championship ended in awreck. Johnson got the restart ofhis life in overtime, took the leadon the very last lap of the race, won for the first time in his ca-reer at Homestead and grabbedthe final Sprint Cup trophy. The win was the 15th for Hen-

drick Motorsports and seventhfor crew chief Chad Knaus, whonow only trails Dale Inman’srecord eight.“When I was coming to the

checkered flag, I had to reallylook closely at it going by tomake sure it was, like, ‘Is this re-ally happening?’” Johnson said.

DETROIT (AP) – Fiat Chrysleris recalling nearly 89,000 carsand SUVs to fix possible fuelleaks or problems with wind-shield wipers. The most serious recall covers

nearly 35,000 Dodge Durangoand Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVsworldwide from the 2016 modelyear. All have 3.6-liter V6 en-gines. A fuel tube may have beendamaged in manufacturing, andcould cause a gas leak and fire.Fiat Chrysler says an employ-

ee found a leak in one vehicleand no fires have been reported. The company estimates thatonly 30 vehicles may have leaks, but the recall is needed to findthem. Owners will be notified bymail starting Dec. 19. In themeantime, Fiat Chrysler saysowners should be alert for fuelleaks and contact dealers if theyspot one.The other recall covers more

than 54,000 Dodge Dart com-pacts from the 2016 model yearin North America. Electrical volt-age spikes caused by a wind-shield washer pump can causeshort circuits. That can causethe wipers to fail.

Cooper Standard of Novi andDSM, whose North Americanheadquarters are in Troy, werehonored with a Society of Plas-tics Engineers’ (SPE) AutomotiveInnovation Award during theorganization’s annual awardsgala earlier in November.

The team won SPE’s “Most In-novative Use of Plastics” awardin the “materials” category forCooper Standard’s High Perform-ance Vacuum Brake Tubes de-signed for automotive industryapplications, said Cooper Stan-dard spokeswoman Sharon S.Wenzl.

Developed to replace tradition-al clamped rubber hoses, CooperStandard’s High PerformanceVacuum Brake Tube simplifiesengine and undercarriage rout-ing, Wenzl said.

The design uses a smaller di-ameter with a thinner wall, which allows a 35 percent spacesavings and a more than 50 per-cent weight reduction over cur-rent rubber hoses and clamps,Wenzl said.

This product also allows forrapid assembly and ease of main-tenance through the use of quickconnectors, and eliminates theneed for heat shields and brack-ets.

Combined, the system pro-vides a cost-effective, next-gener-ation tube innovation, Wenzlsaid.

“The DSM Arnitel CM622 ther-moplastic material provided usthe perfect opportunity to deliv-er customers an innovative solu-tion to meet critical mass reduc-tion goals, while exceeding theirexpectations for high-perfor-mance vacuum brake applica-tions,” said Chris Couch, vicepresident of Cooper Standard’sInnovation and Product groups.“We are thrilled to be honored bythe SPE for this team achieve-ment.”

over a broad temperature range(-40 to 150C), possess excellentunder-hood chemical resistance, offer burst strengths exceeding60 bar and deliver flexural forceof greater than 50 Newtons,Wenzl said.

The Arnitel CM622 materialwas designed to maintain prop-erty retention after extended ex-posure to elevated temperatures.Further, the plastic lines and con-nectors are resistant to the cor-rosive effects of road salts, Wenzlsaid.

Commenting on the award onbehalf of DSM, Bill Senge, R&T Di-rector Americas, spoke of the im-portance of the partners’ collab-oration from concept to marketin this advanced applicationproject.

“What is most challenging inour business is to stay ahead ofthe innovation curve. We at DSMbelieve strong collaborations en-sure that our developmentscater for current and future mar-ket trends.” Senge said.

“This SPE award for CooperStandard’s High PerformanceVacuum Brake Tubes is alsoproof of what can be achievedwhen material specialists and ap-plication engineers join forces todrive automotive trends andspeed the implementation ofnext-generation lightweightingdesigns.”

The SPE’s Automotive Innova-tion Awards program is theoldest and largest competitionof its kind in the automotiveand plastics industries, Wenzlsaid.

Dozens of teams made up ofautomakers, tier suppliers andpolymer producers submit nomi-nations to judges that detail forinnovative parts, systems andmodules.

Applications must be on acommercially available vehicleby Nov. 1 of the year in which anomination is submitted, Wenzlsaid.

ing with customers before theprocess began to find out whatexactly they wanted.

“We even went on garage vis-its,” Chandra said. “We talkedwith people about how they feltthe Acadia fit into their lifestyles. We even talked with GrandCherokee owners. What wefound out was that these peoplewere busy and wanted an SUVthat fit their lifestyles.”

People want a light, agile vehi-cle that’s a good drive, Chandrasaid. And many people still wantthat third row of seats “just incase” they might need it, eventhough most people admittedthey don’t use a third row duringeveryday use.

“We changed the Acadia togrow our sales volume,” Chandrasaid.

Paul Spadafora, chief engineeron the 2017 Acadia, said that oneway GMC was able to change theAcadia was by using an entirelynew architecture that managedto reduce the size of the vehiclelength by three-and-a-half inchesand reduce weight by 728pounds. The Toyota Highlanderis now 200 pounds heavier andtwo inches longer.

The reduction in length allowsthe new Acadia to have a turningradius under 39 inches, saidSpadafora. This is in a segmentwhere the average vehicle’s turn-ing radius is over 40 inches.

“And the vehicle is reallystrong in terms of structure,”Spadafora said.

“We looked at all the joints andare using new bonding technolo-gies to bond dissimilar materials. When you use a lot of great butdifferent materials, you have tofind new ways to bond them to-gether.

“We used advanced analyticsso that we put only what was

needed to do the job. We didn’toverengineer this vehicle and wewere able to use a lot of alu-minum.”

The new Acadia uses a newfive-point lightweight suspensionsystem that was created throughintegrated work between GMCand its suppliers.

“The 2017 Acadia will come infour trim levels,” Spadafora said.

“That includes an all-terrainlevel as well as a Denali level. The seating comes in five- , six-and seven-passenger configura-tions.”

“We even changed the way itfeels to depress the gas andbrake pedals,” Spadafora said.

While people may want a thirdrow of seats just in case,Spadafora said, in the past it’s

been difficult for people to get tothat back row to sit.

“We took care of that and it’spossible for someone my size toget there quite easily – and I’mnot a small guy,” Spadafora said.

He added that developing thevehicle was really a matter ofevolution.

GMC was able to learn fromthe work done on previous GMvehicles and use that experienceto integrate new technologies in-to a new structure using newbonding techniques on new ma-terials.

The result is a lighter, moremanueverable vehicle that wasdesigned with input from cus-tomers at the very beginning ofthe design and engineeringprocess.
