Schools must provide a Semester 1 report to parents before the end of August 2020 (Week 6, Term 3). Warrawong Public School will provide simplified Semester 1 Reports at the end of this term. The report will consist of an English and Mathematics comment as well as a General Comment. Students will be given a grade for their effort but will not be graded on the A-E scale. Attendance will also be reported. In the attendance section you will notice NSW State Average of attendance is 93%. You will also notice your child’s attendance represented as a percentage and as the number of days absent. This is so you are able to see how your child’s attendance compares to the average attendance of students in NSW Public Schools. School Holidays This will be the last Newsletter for the term. Term 2 finishes on Friday 3 July 2020 at 3pm. Term 3 commences for students on Tuesday 21 July 2020. Attendance We in Australia are lucky. Our children are able to attend a local school, if they choose, for no cost to their parents. It is important that students attend school on time. Missing just the first 10mins each day adds up to 50mins per week, 500mins per term 2 000mins per year. Literacy learning happens in the morning as students are alert and ready to learn. If your child is missing time in the morning they are missing out on crucial Literacy time. So, if your child is late for just 10mins per day they will miss nearly 17 days of Literacy lessons per year, equalling approximately three and half weeks of Literacy. It is required by law that students attend school every day that it is open unless they are sick. It is also very important that they are punctual to school. They are only at school for a maximum of thirteen years. In most cases those thirteen years can shape the rest of their lives. There isn’t time to waste. WPS Breakfast Club

GRITA reminder in case your child comes home talking about GRIT. We encourage our students to practise Effective Learning Strategies through our GRIT initiative. Grit stands for:

G – Goals: Set realistic learning goals and monitor your achievementR – Resilience: When things get tricky stick with it and ask for helpI – Initiative: Thinkcreativelyandbecuriousaboutdifferentwaystosolveyour problem and reactT – Time: Give yourself the time to do the best job you can

Our world is changing at an ever-increasing pace and our education system needs to be responsive to this. In a country like Australia information is at our finger tips, easily accessible through devices that connect to the internet. It wasn’t all that long ago that it was amazing that a phone could take a photo…….. look at what you can do now!!!!

What’s next?It is important that we develop adults who have the skills to decipher fact from fiction, have opinions that are based on facts, can collaborate with others to solve problems, are agile in their thinking and see that learning is lifelong. They need the skills, the knowhow and the willingness to constantly change and learn. We intend to teach the students what these strategies are and what they look like. Our goal is to make them as much a part of life at WPS as our PBL Values of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible. We plan to not only help our students but also our families in understanding the importance of Effective Learning Strategies so that parents are able to talk their children about how they employed Effective Learning Strategies at school.GRIT is our vehicle for this. A simple acronym, that is easy to remember but packs a lot of punch.

Borrowing:The students are borrowing books again in the library which is great to see.Returned books are cleaned and quarantined for a minimum of 3 days before being returned to shelves.Overdue Books:We have many overdue books at home. Library Overdue notices will be sent home this week. Please help your child/children find these books and return them to the library as soon as possible. To borrow books children must have a library bag to pop their books in to take books to and from home.New Books:There are some fabulous new books in the library at the moment and students have already taken advantage of the opportunity to take them home to enjoy. Book Club:Book Club will be available again in Term 3.There will be no cash taken at school for Book Club in 2020.All purchases from the catalogues will be made online.Any money sent into school will be returned home with the child. There are some great books available from book club to support students reading at home.

Thought of the Week

“The most important thing is to try and inspire people so they

can be great in whatever they do.”- Kobe Bryant (American athlete: 23 August 1978-26 January 2020)

Parents calling the SchoolIt would be appreciated if parents could make arrangements with children before school, on who is collecting them after school. It makes it difficult for office staff to pass messages onto students, especialy during the early pick up times.

ImpetigoA number of cases of Impetigo have recently been reported. I have outlined some important information that may be useful when treating Impetigo.

Time from exposure to illness: 1 to 3 days

Symptoms: Small red spots change into blisters that fill up with pus and become crusted; usually on the face hands or scalp.

Do I need to keep my child home? Yes, until treatment starts and after a written indication you child can return to school.

How can I prevent the spread? Careful hand washing, keep sores covered with watertight dressing and please seek medical advice.

3/4T doing their best :)3/4T have been busy completing a book review on Moving House by James Maloney. The kids mostly gave it 5 out of 5. Great work 3/4T and Mr Thomson.
