1 Warranwood Primary School www.warranwood.vic.edu.au FAREWELL TO SUE DEAN This is the text of an email I sent to all families on Tuesday… Sue Dean has been appointed as Principal of Ferntree Gully North Primary School, beginning in term two. It is good news for Ferntree Gully North in that they have appointed an outstanding person and leader. And it is good news for Sue herself, as she is a very talented and knowledgeable school lead- er, and highly deserving of this recognition. It is however sad for us, for the very same reasons. Sue has been the Assistant Principal here at War- ranwood for the last 9 years. In that time she has made a significant difference to the educational op- portunities of many, if not all, of our students and provided guidance, support and mentoring for staff. Her work in the area of the Program for Students with Disabilities has been outstanding, to the extent that her expertise and advice is sought frequently from other schools. Her leadership of teaching and learning programs has also been a highlight, as she has driven many of the changes in our teaching practices through our School Strategic Plans. On a personal level I will miss her wisdom, knowledge and amazing support in what is often a difficult and stressful job. This has all happened very quickly, with Sue’s last day being next Wednesday 17 March. Sue will be attending our network leadership conference on Thursday and Friday next week, and will be absent in the last week as she will be having a knee operation on Monday 21 March and will be recuperating fol- lowing that. An appropriate time for students and parents will be found to farewell Sue once we know what her (hobbling) movements are in that last week of term. It is important that we publicly recognise her contribution to our community. It will most likely be either the Monday morning before she has the operation of the Thursday afternoon at our final assembly. The position of Assistant Principal will be advertised through the Education Department in Term Two, allowing a new person to begin in Term Three. During Term Two Shane Harrop will be acting Assistant Principal. Shane has filled the position before so is familiar with many aspects of the job. Term 1, Week 7 Thursday 10th March 2016 WHAT’S ON? Young Leaders Conference.

On Wednesday 2nd of March the School and House Captains went to the National Young Leaders Day.

The conference was held at the Melbourne Convention Centre and all the primary schools in Victoria partici-

pated. There were 9 speakers that talked to the students about good leadership and how to be a strong

leader. The motto for the day was: Master the little.

We got little booklets to write down notes to help us with leading. Some of the speakers included: Nathan

Want, Dylan Parker, Harry Baker and Kate Austin. They all spoke about their lives and were very interest-

ing. There were a lot of important lines including: ‘Little things make big differences’ and ‘Keep focused.’ All

speakers were very inspiring and great at speaking. On the way back we were lucky enough to stop off at 7

Eleven to buy a slurpee and a little snack. The whole day was very exciting and we learnt lots about leader-

ship and how to master it.

It's a great opportunity for young leaders to become even better. Remember the motto: Master the little.

Camp Rumbug Important Departure Information for Tuesday Morning

To assist with the smooth movement for students and luggage to the buses on Tuesday morning can all par-ents and well wishers please gather behind the school fence on Wellington Park Drive. Please resist assem-bling on the footpath space and curb as this makes loading buses really problematic. Once all students are on the buses please feel free to move closer to the buses on the nature strip to wave the kids off. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.

Student Welfare Parenting in today’s society…given the context in last week’s newsletter...what can we do to keep our sanity? Answer: Mindful Parenting What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is bringing awareness to the present moment with openness and without judgement. Mindfulness is proven to reduce stress and improve physical and mental health. What is Mindful Parenting? Bringing moment to moment awareness to their interactions with their child. This style ‘cultivates an enhanced capacity for parenting calmly while engendering a warm and nurturing tone’. In contrast when parents are stressed they can become colder, more controlling, rejecting and reactive which has a negative impact on the child. Follow this link to excellent documents from the Australian Childhood Foundation that can help you develop a Mindful ap-proach to parenting. Mindful Parenting Booklet and Connected Parenting Booklet. Link www.childhood.org.au/for-professionals/resources Consider the following key points to kick-start your Mindful Parenting: What are you role modelling? Children acquire their coping and social learning patterns from their caregivers. Remove ‘should’ from your vocab when setting expectations as a parent for e.g.: “I should be able to do……” Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself or set too high expectations. Write down the unhelpful reactions/patterns you have and want to change. Write down all your family’s strengths. All families have strengths. Focus on them and celebrate them. Are you too busy as a family? Remember that all kids really need is YOU. They want quality time with their parents when there can be talks and incidental learning that supports their social/emotional wellbeing whilst having fun or down time. How comfortable are you when your child displays negative emotions? All parents know how to provide love and support for their kids but sometimes as parents when we are feeling stressed or worried if our child displays that emotion it can be very challenging. It can be hard to separate our own needs in our child’s time of need. Look after and support yourself. This will help you to role model healthy coping styles and stay calm when needed. CYBER CITIZENSHIP AND SAFETY So what’s the deal with Snapchat?

What every parent and educator needs to know.

For now, Snapchat isn’t going anywhere. It’s continuing to grow in popularity since it first came to our attention, despite

some fairly substantial reasons for concern when it came to the kinds of photos some users were sending when buying

into the ‘it disappears after 10 seconds’ trick.

Like any social media platform, Snapchat can still get impulsive young users into trouble, but it has evolved in the ways

users can interact with each other, as well as improving some of the security flaws.

As part of my work in assisting parents and educators to guide young people in how to use social media in smart ways, I

have teamed up with a small group of ‘Snapchat using’ teenagers to produce a short video that covers how Snapchat is

used, how it’s evolved, and what users can do to protect privacy and security.

This video is available for a short time so please download and watch it with family members who may be using

social media or who are about to enter the world of digital citizenship.

Click the link below. http://www.schoolwellbeing.com.au/snapchat/ Jamie Roberts, from schoolwellbeing.com.au Each learning area at Warranwood incorporates appropriate cyber safety focuses for the students throughout the year. These learning opportunities come in a variety of approaches including research, role-play, discussions and hands on ac-tivities. This of course plays an important role in preparing the whole child to be a global citizen. To support families in feeling equipped and competent with these issues we will offer a parent forum in Term 2 where an expert in the field will present insights and understandings about bringing up cyber citizens safely. Best friend next door By Jessica - 3/4D

The pitch black painted floorboards creaked in the old, spooky, abandoned mansion. The mansion had a thick brick wall fence around it except for the entry gate which had tall bars with sharp, pointy triangles at the top, they were like spears! The bars were thick but there was not enough room for someone to fit through the gaps. Suddenly a black figure emerged. It was wearing a black trench coat so it was hard to see who it was. The font yard was full of dead grass that swayed in the howling wind. Two dead trees stood bare and werewolves howled in time with the swaying grass. Every window in the house was shattered. A girl with long hair emerged from behind a tattered curtain. I had seen her at school walking around the school yard. She’s new to my school. She wears a black dress with sequin sandals just like mine. Her name is Lola. As I look through the bars at this horrible mess I thought maybe I could become friends with their little girl? I look down at what I ‘m wearing, a white dress and in the middle is a big pink satin bow. My name is Hope. To be continued…..
