Principal News FAMILY PLANNING SEXUALITY EDUCATION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL It is good to see such a positive response from families for the Sexuality Education Family Night next Tuesday 20 November. The speaker from Family Planning targets the information carefully to the Middle School students and their parents. While these programs don’t take away a parent’s responsibility to discuss values and the technical information, it is great to have experts deliver the information in a consistent and accurate way. Some parents initially find talking about sex to their children uncomfortable, so the Family Life sessions can be a good way to begin conversations. And these conversations are vital – your children need accurate, values appropriate advice from adults about sexuality.
DECEMBER REPORTS There appears to be no resolution to the pay and conditions dispute between the Victorian government and the Australi-an Education Union. As a result of the bans still in place regarding written reports, your child’s end of year report will contain only the “dot-point” section, which contains information based on ongoing teacher assessments. This report informs you how your child is performing in relation to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards as well as comparing their performance with where they were 12 months ago. There will be no written comment for most students. At the moment there are only 2 teachers who are not union members and therefore will be providing written reports.
GOVERNMENT DIRECTION You may have heard the Education Minister on the news today talking about new directions for Victorian schools and education. These reforms will begin to be introduced in 2013. Click on this link to read about where it is all heading! Towards Victoria as a Learning Community

Senior School Poetry The Senior School students have been learning different forms of poetry. Here are some examples of the work our students have produced based on our Term 4 topic of animals. Haiku (17 syllables: 5-7-5) Blizzards are not cold For one as giant as me The snow is my home

School: School, means exactly; Six. Cruel. Hours. Of. Our. Lives. Education’s tough! By Kiralee 5/6 RP The Soldier: Fighting for freedom Lives at stake, all on the line Will this horror end? By Kade W 5/6 CT Quatrain (four line stanzas, with AABB or ABAB rhyming sequence) Animals dying one by one Being killed under the sun One minute drinking nice cool water The next being captured for brutal slaughter Once the animals are gone, we can’t get them back The poachers using them for hat racks The predators lurking, ripping animals apart Climate change might as well shoot them like a dart.

Free Verse (an irregular form of poetry in which the content is free of traditional rules of fixed meter or rhyme) I follow the lion waiting for its next prey so I can scavenge for leftovers. Night comes, I hunt on my own waiting for a baby so I can feed. My laugh calls the herd to get ready to have a feast of a lifetime.

The Senior School this week have been working on Haiku poems which originated in Japan. They consist of 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line and 5 in the final line. Here is a sample of some of the student’s poetry.
