    Celebrating AnotherSuccessful MississaugaSummitThe Mississauga summit is a grassroots

    initiative driven by volunteers who arededicated to the well-being of our city andworking toward a common vision for thesustainability and vibrancy of our community.

    Over the years, hundreds of Mississaugacitizens, business and community leaders,labour, not-for-profit organizations andgovernment representatives have dedicatedthousands of volunteer hours to come togetherto discuss common issues and create collectivesolutions. We were impressed to see that thisyear was another example of civic engagementbeing alive and well in Mississauga.

    The 2011 Summit introduced fivebig ideas for Mississauga:

    Building Mississaugas human servicesinfrastructure

    Creating a post-secondary educationstrategy to complement our economicand human capital development

    Waterfront development and environmentalsustainability

    Cultivating Mississauga as a Centre ofExcellence for diversity and immigration

    Creating quality jobs for short and long term

    Since its inception, the summit has supported thework of the City and engaged City Council onan ongoing basis. We are proud to work witha group of such engaged community members.In November, Councillors unanimously passed

    a motion requesting that staff prepare areport on how we can move forward withrecommendations from the summit.

    I strongly believe Ward 5 can be a big partof these initiatives. There is so much roomfor growth and improvement, being a partof these big ideas can only serve to betterour community. I would especially like tosee Malton benefit from the neighbourhooddevelopment strategy, and will do all I canto facilitate this.

    I encourage you to learn more aboutthe Summit and get involved atwww.mississaugasummit.ca

    Dear Neighbours,As your newly elected City Councillor forWard 5, it is a pleasure to be sending myinaugural newsletter to the economic drivers ofthis community our businesses. With 40% ofMississaugas businesses in Ward 5, I felt itwas critical to reach out to you right away.

    Prior to becoming your City Councillor, I worked

    for several Fortune 500 companies, practicedpublic affairs, and co-founded a successfulCanadian business. I understand and appreciatejust how important our businesses are to ourcommunitys prosperity its why I believeits important I establish a positive workingrelationship with each and every one of you.

    There is room for great economic growth inWard 5 and I believe it starts with you. I willdo everything in my power to foster this growthand look forward to your ideas on how we cancontinue to encourage economic developmentin Ward 5.

    I have outlined a Small Business strategy that Ibelieve will work to promote small and mediumbusinesses, the real job creators and engine ofour economy. As part of my strategy, I will:

    1. CREATE strong Business Improvement Areas(BIAs) to recognize and promote localbusinesses;

    2. PROVIDE small business with support andassist with strategic and business plandevelopment through agencies such as theCity of Mississaugas Enterprise Centreand the Business Development Bank ofCanada. Both of these organizationsassist businesses to develop networks,partnerships, strategic plan reviews, andprovide comprehensive business support;

    3. ISSUE a job creation challenge similar to the

    one recently undertaken by the MississaugaSummit that generated over 75 jobs in thecommunity;

    4. ATTRACT new businesses with competitivetax rates and tax incentives;

    5. HIGHLIGHT to Canadian and internationalbusiness the incredible quality of life thatMississauga offers, including affordablehousing, transportation, a highly trainedand skilled workforce, and a diversity oflanguage skills;

    6. ENCOURAGE the federal government tomove on offering a payroll tax holidayfor businesses to create new jobs;

    7. DEPLOYCity-led trade missions todestinations such as India, Pakistan,China, Poland and Brazil to attract strongforeign firms and foreign investments.Mississaugas diversity is an asset aswe have the language and business skillsnecessary to make these trips a success;and

    8. LISTEN to Ward 5 business owners abouthow the red tape businesses have toendure could be changed, and workwith city officials to reduce the burden.

    I welcome your feedback on this strategy andwhat you think can be done to bolster it further.What do you believe is the most importantaction we can take? What are your prioritiesand are they different from those listed above?Please let me know; only with your input canwe make things better and continue to grow.

    In this newsletter you will find resources tailoredto businesses in Mississauga such as thebenefits of BIAs, upcoming dates of informationsessions and important contact information. Ihope that these resources are helpful to youand your business. I look forward to hearingfrom you and working with you in the futuretoward a more prosperous community.

    Best regards,

    Bonnie CrombieCouncillor, Ward 5
