With the departure of ourlone senior Krysta Kjerstad, we arelooking to have a good year. Wewill still be young and will playthat way at times, but as the sea-son goes along and we mature welook to be playing our best ballcome tourney time. We should have a quick teamthis year and will try to get out andrun as much as we can. We look todo a lot of full defense with ourquickness. Returning for the Lady Eaglesare: Autumn Schulz, a 5’9” seniorwho averages 13.3 points per gameand eight rebounds per game.Last season she was asked to carrythe load for us, this season we willrely on her experience to lead theLady Eagles on and off the floor. Sadie O’Rourke a 5’7” junioraverages 10.9 points per game.Sadie is a spark plug. She is agood defender and makes thingstough on opposing teams pointguards. She can be an explosivescorer and will need to step up andhave some big games for us. Kaitlin Schreiber is a 5’8” juniorand averages 3.2 points per gameand 4.5 rebounds per game.Kaitlin is an active player with anice touch from the outside. She isa hard worker and will need to stepinto a leadership role. Bailey Lytle is a 5’3” senior.Bailey is a very smart player andwill need to have a strong off sea-son to step up for us. Carlee Johnston is a 5’5” sopho-more and averages 4.1 points pergame and 4.0 rebounds per game.Carlee is a very athletic and quickball player. She has grown a lot asa freshman and will look to have agood season for us next season. Tayah Huether is a 5’6” sopho-

more. Tayah is a smart and hardworking ball player. She will giveus good minutes this season. Josie Blasius a 5’7” freshman, averages 3.6 points per game.Josie played very well for us as aneighth grader last season. Wall Eagles Boys basketball 2011-2013 preview

The Wall Eagles have played inthree consecutive regional cham-pionship games and they under-stand that in order to return to afourth regional championshipgame it will have to be earned. This year’s approach will be totake one game at a time and tolearn from each game to become abetter team. By Coach Ryan Dinger The 2012 - 2013 Wall EaglesBoys Basketball team is prepar-ing to have a successful seasonwith a solid group of upper class-man. This year’s team will be led byfive seniors and eight juniors whowill all work well together as ateam. We also have three sopho-mores and six freshmen that willcontribute to this year’s team ef-fort. This group of boys understandswhat it takes to be successful as abasketball team and is preparedto work together to have a greatseason. I am very excited to coach thisteam and prepare them for life asindividuals and create a teamfirst attitude.

game. The team has several scor-ing options both from the outsideand the inside. Our players have been workinghard in the weight room and havebeen shooting throughout thesummer to improve their game. The team also attended severalteam camps this summer and sev-eral players attended individualcamps as well. Team unity will be the biggestfactor in how successful the WallEagles will be this season. Everybasketball player’s dream is toplay in a state tournament and theWall Eagles have that as one oftheir team goals, but they willtake one game at a time first andsee what happens. Several boys on this year’s teamhave played in a state champi-onship football game, so theyknow what it takes to reach theirgoal. I am honored to have the op-portunity to lead this basketballteam this year and the boys arevery excited to get started. I encourage everyone to comeout and support your 2012 - 2013Wall Eagles Boys Basketballteam. Our first game will be heldFriday, December 7th at 6:00 p.m.in Philip.

by Nancy HaighFor the third straight season the

Philip Lady Scotties will learn newskills under the tutelage of a newcoach.

Karmen Marbry coached volley-ball for two years in Estelline andlooks forward to the challenge ofcoaching basketball. She playedbasketball throughout high schooland one year on the School ofMines team.

Since Marbry did not watch theteam play last year, she is some-what handicapped in knowing theplayers. She has watched them atopen gym and has noticed areasthat need improvement.

Ball handling skills are at thetop of her list for the first few prac-tices. Marbry said she wants tohave the players gain control of theball, to own it. By having good con-

trol of the ball the team can utilizethe fast break. Marbry said shelikes to play a fast paced game asthe high momentum can work intheir favor. “It takes some windthough,” said Marbry.

Marbry added that the team alsoneeds to work on shooting form andpositioning at the basket. Fromwatching the girls during open gymshe has noticed that the team’sfield goal percentage is low.

On the defense side she likes touse zone defense, typically the two-three zone. After they gain moreexperience she said they can moveto more difficult zone defenses.Marbry said the zone will espe-cially help when an opposing teamhas more size. “It allows other play-ers to share in that responsibility,”she said.

Marbry said she likes her team

to play aggressive ball. “Gettingafter the ball and being on theirtoes all the time,” is what she likesto see in her players. She said forthem to do that, and maintain it,they have to be in shape.

In preliminary looks at how theteam plays together she sees poten-tial team leaders in juniors BaileyRadway, Madison Hand, and Jor-dyn Dekker; and seniors KristaWells and Sam Johnson. She saideach is strong in one or more areas, such as being focused, knowing the

game, strong in the post positionand accurate shooting.

Marbry noted since she is new tothe district, “we’re going to take itone game at a time.” She said theywill practice for the upcominggame and not for one particularteam that they’ll play during theseason.

Other team members for thisseason are seniors Holly Iwan,Katelyn Enders and MeganWilliams; juniors Kaci Olivier andKatie Hostutler; sophomores

Hanna Hostutler, Ashton Reedy,Tyana Gottsleben, Katlin Knutson,Peyton DeJong, Brett Carley andJustina Cvach; and freshmen ElleCoyle, Ta’Te Fortune, Jenny John-ston and Libbi Koester.

These girls will be looking to fillthe positions left by 2012 graduatesMisty Johnson, Audra Antonsen,Josie Guptill and LaRae Van Tas-sel.

Student managers this year aresophomore Afton Burns and fresh-man Briaunna Williams.

In forensic science paper chro-matography is a technique whichcan be used to identify differentinks. Let’s say someone committeda crime by changing the monetaryamount on a check. Using chro-matography, a forensic scientistcould tell whether more than oneink pen was used to write on thecheck and whether the suspect'sink pen could have been used.

Most inks are not really made upof one colored component. Thereare actually several different pig-ments that can make up one ink. Inchromatography, the ink is soakedin a solution so that the differentpigments will "spread" apart whichallows the various colors to be seen. You can see how chromatographyworks by conducting the followingactivity either as a possible science

fair project, or just for fun! What You Need:•Different brands of black

marker, felt-tip pen, or ink pen•Tall 8 oz drinking glass•Paper towel•Paper clip or toothpick•Rubbing alcohol or nail polish

remover (optional)What You Do:•Fill a tall glass half-way with

water. Cut 3-4 strips of a heavypaper towel and attach the ends toa stiff piece of wire by unbending apaper clip or a toothpick that canrest over the top of the glass.

•Next, make a large dot of inkabout 1/2 an inch from the bottomof each strip, using a differentbrand of black marker, felt-tip pen,or ink pen for each strip.

•Set the strips in the glass so

that the ends of the strips touch thewater but the ink dots are abovethe water level.

•As the water soaks up into thepaper, the ink will begin to sepa-rate into different colors. Note thatsome inks are not water-soluble; ifthe ink does not bleed, try using ei-ther nail polish remover or rubbingalcohol instead of water.

by Nancy HaighA strong returning varsity and a

group of young wrestlers fromPhilip, Kadoka and Wall startedworking out on the mats in Philip, hoping to repeat as region champi-ons.

Philip Area was also crowned asDistrict 7 champion last February.Head coach Matt Donnelly notedthat there will no longer be districttournaments, it will go straight toregion action. He said numbers aredown statewide for wrestling, which is one reason for the change.

The team lost two wrestlers,Tanner Radway and Roger Davisboth from Philip, after last spring’sgraduation. Everyone else is re-turning along with a batch ofyoung seventh and eighth gradewrestlers.

The returning and new wrestlersinclude seniors: Kadoka – ClintStout, Chance Knutson and PaulKary; juniors: Philip – Reed John-son; Wall – Lane Blasius andJoaquin Contreras, Kadoka –Logan Ammons, Chandlier Sud-beck and Gavin DeVries; sopho-mores: Kadoka – Jed Brown;freshmen: Wall – Raedon Ander-son, Philip – Grady Carley andRance Johnson; eighth grade:Philip – Nick Donnelly, Kadoka –Geoffrey DeVries and Paul Smiley;seventh grade: Wall – PrestonEisenbraun, Trey Elshere,Kadoka – Jory Rodgers, Bryan Let-telier; Philip – Kaylor Pinney,Keagan Fitch and Hunter Peter-son.

Managers for the year are seniorKelsie Kroetch, junior DeseraeWilliams and seventh grader

Madyson Morehart. Assistantcoach is Keven Morehart; BrandyKnutson, Kadoka, is also assisting.

Donnelly noted all the wrestlersfit the mold for being qualitywrestlers. The older wrestlers helplead the younger wrestlers; givethem direction and increase theirskills.

Donnelly said all the tourna-ments they attend are consistentlytough competitions for the wres-tlers. The tournaments vary in par-ticipating schools with each schoolhaving different styles. “It keepsthe kids on their toes,” he said.“They are learning all the time.”

Keeping healthy is a goal for thePhilip Area team this year. Don-nelly noted last year’s early in-juries held back the wrestlers. “Wedidn’t have a full team until afterChristmas,” he said.

A recap of last season shows N.Donnelly, at 106 pounds, takingfirst at district and regions; Brown,113 pounds, and Carley, 120pounds, third at both; Andersonfourth at districts; Blasius, 132pounds, first at both; Johnson, 138pounds, first at districts and fourthat regions; Sudbeck, 145 pounds, second at districts, third at regionsand fourth at state; Stout, 152pounds, first at districts, second atregions; Radway, 160 pounds, thirdat districts; Knutson 171 pounds, second at district and regions andsixth at state; Ammons, 195pounds second at districts andfourth at regions; and Gavin De-Vries, 220 pounds, second at dis-tricts and third at regions. (Speak with your family physi-cian before applying any of thesestrategies.)

Fortunately, there are practicalsports nutrition strategies thatcan help you to successfully imple-ment the basic principles of sportsnutrition.

Start exercise fully hydrated.Bring a water bottle to school andtake frequent sips throughout theday. Consume 14–20 ounces of

water or sports drink two to fourhours before you train or compete.Keep hydrating as needed duringwarm-ups by drinking anothereight ounces of fluid, especially ifconditions are hot or humid.Check your urine color before ex-ercise to monitor your hydrationstatus. A light yellow color is con-sistent with adequate hydration. Adarker color, like the color of applejuice, is typically a sign that morefluids are needed before you start

Start exercise fully fueled.

When possible, consume a mealtwo to four hours before trainingor competing. Choose familiarhigh-carb foods and beverages, and include a moderate amount oflean protein as well. Avoid slow-to-digest, fatty foods during the pre-exercise meal. Have an easy todigest carbohydrate snack if you'rehungry in the hour before exercise. If you have an early morning prac-tice or competition, consume yourpre-exercise meal the evening be-fore and have a carbohydratesnack on your way out the door inthe morning.

If your stomach is in a knot be-fore a competition, try a liquid car-bohydrate source (fruit smoothieor a meal-replacement drink) inplace of solid foods. Trial your pre-exercise meals before practices sothat you know you will be comfort-able with these foods on competi-tion days

Rehydrate and refuel as neededduring exercise. Plain water isgenerally fine for exercise lastingless than one hour in moderateweather conditions.

Consume a sports drink insteadof plain water if you're exercisingvigorously for an hour or more, orany time you're exercising in hotor humid conditions. The flavor,

sodium, and carbohydrates in asports drink can help to optimizefluid intake and retention duringexercise. While high school sportsgenerally don't fully deplete carbo-hydrate muscle fuel reserves in asingle training session or competi-tion, the carbohydrates in a sportsdrink can help to sustain bloodglucose levels during longer exer-cise sessions.

Consume fluids at a rate thatclosely matches your sweat rateduring exercise. This generally re-quires something on the order of13–26 fluid ounces every hour ofexercise, preferably in smalleramounts taken frequently, such asthree to seven every 15 minutes orso. Drink from your own sport bot-tle so you can track your fluid in-take

To refuel, to ward off hunger, and to rehydrate between eventsduring meets or between matchesor games during tournaments, consume familiar, easy to digestcarbohydrate snacks along withwater or a sports drink.

Trial your rehydration and refu-eling strategies during practicesbefore implementing them duringcompetitions.

Promote full recovery after exer-

cise. After a long training sessionor an extended competition, con-sume 0.5 grams of carbohydratesper pound body weight within 30minutes of finishing exercise. Re-peat this again within two hoursor transition to high-carbohydratesnacks and meals. For a 150pound athlete, this equates toabout 75 grams of carbohydratesimmediately after playing, andthen again two hours later.

Consume some protein as soonas possible after exercise. After along practice, a strength-trainingworkout, or an extended competi-tion, consume 15–25 grams of pro-tein as soon as possible afterexercise.

Weigh yourself before and afterexercise to gauge your net loss offluids. To replace this fluid, grad-ually drink 16–24 fluid ounces ofsports drink, recovery beverage, orwater for every one pound ofweight lost. Consume sodiumsources along with your fluids formore effective rehydration

If your loss of fluids consistentlyexceeds two percent of your bodyweight, try to increase your fluidintake during subsequent trainingsessions or competitions to avoiddehydration.

A lot of depth ... A total of 23 Philip Scotties comprise the basketball team this season.Back row from left are Chase Wright, Ben Stangle, Jace Giannonatti, Kruse Bierle, Wyatt Schaackand Joseph One Skunk. Fourth row are student manager Katie Haigh, Jacob Kammerer, BrodyJones, Gavin Brucklacher, Tristen Rush, Blake Martinez and student manager Shelby Schofield.Third row are Nelson Holman, Garrett Snook, Keegan Burnett, Paul Guptill and Todd Antonsen.Second row are seniors Gunner Hook, Cassidy Schnabel, Tate DeJong and Quade Slovek. Frontrow are seniors Sam Stangle and Thomas Doolittle. Not pictured is Ryan Van Tassel.

by Nancy HaighWith more than 20 kids taking to

the basketball court head coachMike Baer likes the team’sprospects for this season.

Baer returns this year after atwo year absence from the Scotties, those players he coached as fresh-men are now seniors. He said theyhave changed some in the time hewas gone, they’ve gotten bigger, faster and stronger.

Baer said the seniors, GunnerHook, Thomas Doolittle, CassidySchnabel, Tate DeJong, QuadeSlovek and Sam Stangle, also havesome expectations of him. The yearthey were freshmen the team hada winning season only to lose thedistrict championship by two inovertime.

The junior class returns threeplayers, Gavin Brucklacher, WyattSchaack and Ryan Van Tassel. They don’t have any prior experi-ence with Baer’s coaching but withtheir talent they’ll adapt quicklyand be assests to the team.

The sophomore class brings themost players to the team witheight. Baer said they all have a lotof talent and they will give you allthey’ve got. Nelson Holman, Tris-ten Rush, Blake Martinez, PaulGuptill, Brody Jones, Ben Stangle,Todd Antonsen and Kruse Bierleare ready to try and oust the upper-classmen for choice positions.

Incoming freshmen are a littlemore unknown to Baer, but helikes what he has seen of them inopen gym. Chase Wright, Jace Gi-annonatti, Joseph One Skunk,Jacob Kammerer, Garrett Snookand Keegan Burnett will have theopportunity to learn from the up-perclassmen as well as push thoseolder players.

Baer said he looks for the team

to use each other’s strength, nomatter what the grade. “I told thekids we’re going to play ball,” hesaid. He added he likes an aggres-sive team. He said they won’t runjust one type of offense, they’ll ad-just it as needed for each team theyplay and how the game is progress-ing.

For defense he likes to use thetriangle and two defense. Baer saidthis defense is good for identifyingtwo players who may give the teamtrouble; two defensive players goman to man with them while theother three form a triangle behindthe front two.

Baer said he’d also like to use athree-quarter court pressure andtry to create turnovers. He said theScotties had some luck with it be-fore and he thinks they can again. He said he feels like his absence, ina way, has refreshed him a littlebit. “I’m excited about comingback,” he said.

Baer said the team doesn’t haveas much speed as he’d like, but, they are fundamently sound. Theyalso have some heighth which willhelp them. He also likes the factthat they have depth – a lot of kidshe can play to keep the team fresh.

Student managers for the teamthis year are senior ShelbySchofield and sophomore KatieHaigh.

Looking at fellow district teams,Baer said Oelrichs is unknown tohim, but he knows they had a goodyear last year and could be toughagain. He said Wall is always atthe top of the list, and New Under-wood is usually a top team.

For regions, White River is al-ways the one to beat. Baer said helooks for Jones County to also begood this year.

Good Luck, Coyotes!!!

I am looking forward and amexcited about this upcoming sea-son. The girls have been workinghoping to build off of last years16-7 record. We have threestarters to replace from last year’steam. Returning letter winners are:

Becky Bryan, Emiley Nies, Madi-son Mathews, Rachel Buxcel,Kalli Hespe and Garline Boni. Weare young, having only four seniorand junior girls. We want to be competitive inevery game we play this year. Weneed to develop our younger girls

as the year goes on so they cancontribute on the varsity level atthe end of the year. Districts are wide open thisyear. Hopefully we will be playingour best basketball at that time ofthe year.
