The award-winning Ottis and EvelynBurrow Center for the Fine andPerforming Arts opened in Spring 2010. It was named the 2011 Attraction of theYear by the Alabama Mountain LakesAssociation. The 42nd building onWallace State's expansive 300-acrecampus, it was the first buildingconstructed using sustainable materialsand green energy concepts. About Wallace StateWallace State is a part of a system that serves the needs of morethan 300,000 individuals and has been conservatively estimated toproduce a $3 billion annual economic impact on this state and inour communities. The real impact, however, is in improving thelives of students through education.

Since opening our doors in 1966, Wallace State has servedhundreds of thousands of students. From the very beginning,Wallace State embraced a commitment to excellence that hasbecome not only a tradition but our source of inspiration. TodayWallace State is one of the largest colleges in the AlabamaCommunity College System, serving more than 7,000 studentseach semester. This college is a virtual powerhouse in educationalprogramming, with more than 50 majors leading to degree,certificate and transfer opportunities.

The STARS articulation systemguarantees our studentstransferability of credit to anyAlabama public college oruniversity. For those who want tocomplete their bachelor's andmaster’s degrees on campus,Wallace State students may take advantage of our UniversityCenter partnerships and special articulation agreements, includingthose with Athens State University, the University of Alabama,Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Auburn University, and TroyUniversity.

Our students obtain unprecedented levels of success, whethertransferring, taking licensure exams or finding employment, andtheir satisfaction has been reflected in the College’s retention andgraduation rates among students that exceed the state andnational average. Students who transfer to universities consistentlyoutperform those who started there. Our graduates gaincompetitive jobs and high praise from employers. Licensure ratesrank at or above state and national averages, and our studentsscore above the national average on the Collegiate Assessment ofAcademic Performance (CAAP).

The Door is Open, Come on InWallace State Community College maintains an "open door"admissions policy. You just need to complete an application, andsupply the College with supporting documents including properidentification, and appropriate official high school transcripts, GEDscores, or ACT or SAT scores. Students who enroll in courses suchas non-credit or skills training, may be granted admission withouta minimum score on the ACT or SAT, a GED Certificate, ortranscripts from a high school or college. Requirements vary byprogram. Information is available online, in the course catalog, orby meeting with an advisor in Wallace State’s ACTION Center.

Those students who need to obtain a GED may take classes toprepare for the test free of charge through Wallace State AdultEducation.

GED classes are offered on campus, online and at affiliated sitesboth day and evening. Classes are also offered for employmenttraining and English as a Second Language.

Q&A:Question:“Is the application process complicated?”Answer: Simple Steps. It only takes one easy step at atime. Here’s a checklist.

1. Make an appointment with an advisor in the ACTION Center.(Call 256.352.8040) Discuss your options and figure out howpostsecondary education is flexible enough to fit with yourschedule through distance learning, day, night or weekend classes,and part-time courses of study.

2. Get to know your way around. The WSCC Office of EnrollmentManagement, located in the Student Center, is available toprovide college information, course specific information and toschedule campus visits. Call 256.352.8031 for information.

3. Fill out the necessary paperwork. Pick up an application packetonline or in the Admissions Office and return it, completed, alongwith appropriate identification and required high school or collegetranscripts or proof of GED to the Admissions Office.

4. Figure out funding. There are many opportunities for studentsto obtain funding through financial aid, including scholarships,grants, loans, work-study, WIA, TRA, displaced homemakers’grants, and veterans’ benefits. Call the Financial Aid Office forguidance at 256.352.8182.

5. You are enrolled. Your college experience is about to begin! Just pick up a class schedule and dive right in.

Question:“How Do I Pay?”Answer: The biggest obstacle for most would-be collegestudents is the cost of college tuition and fees.

At Wallace State, approximately 80 percent of students receivesome type of financial aid. The Financial Aid office can helpstudents find ways to tackle financing and guide them throughthe application processes.Be sure to:

-Know financial aid application deadlines-Be well informed about every opportunity applicable to you-Take the time, apply the effort - it will pay off

Grants are awarded on the basis of financial need and do notneed to be repaid. Free application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) forms may be obtained through the Wallace State officeof Financial Aid or online at FAFSA.ed.gov. Federal Pell grants areavailable to eligible students who have submitted a completedFAFSA application form along with additional paperwork requiredby the Wallace State Financial Aid Office.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

More than 80 percent of Wallace State students are eligible for some form of financial aid in the form of Pell grants, the Federal student loan program, scholarships, and work studyopportunities. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is required for most awards. Details about applying for financial aid at Wallace State are available online atwww.wallacestate.edu/finaid. A scholarship application is located in the center section of this booklet. The following scholarships are offered through Wallace State:

Wallace State participates in the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan)Program. While these loans must be repaid to the U.S. Department of Education, Pell grants do not. Grant and loan awards are based on financial need as determinedby filing the FAFSA. The Federal Work-Study program involves part-time employmentthrough the College. Students may work up to 20 hours a week, depending on theirfinancial need, earning at least minimum wage. To apply, complete the FAFSA and aWallace State Community College Application for Federal Work Study.

ADMISSIONS CHECKLIST

o ADMISSIONS APPLICATIONAn Application for Admission must be completed, signedand submitted to the Admissions Office. Forms are availablein the Admissions Office or may be completed online at ourweb site: www.wallacestate.edu. For more informationplease call the Admissions Office at 256.352.8238 or theEnrollment Management Office at 256.352.8031.

Per Alabama State Board Policy 801.1, all newstudents as of Spring 2009 must have on file in theAdmissions Office either (1) a primary form of photodocumentation such as an unexpired driver’s license,or (2) two secondary forms of documentation such asa Social Security card or a U.S. birth certificate alongwith an acceptable alternate photo I.D. For a list ofall acceptable forms of identification, please contactAdmissions at 256.352.8238 or visitwww.wallacestate.edu. Males 18 years or older mustsubmit proof of Selective Service registration.

o OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTSRequest a copy of your official transcripts from all highschools and colleges you have attended be sent to WallaceState Community College Admissions Office. Your transcriptmust include your official graduation date. If you havepassed the GED examination, a copy of your certificate mustbe submitted to the Admissions Office. o APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AIDThe first step to apply for Financial Aid is to complete a FreeApplication for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) along withadditional paperwork required by the Wallace State Financial AidOffice, and a WSCC Scholarship Application. The FAFSA must becompleted online at www.fafsa.gov. You are encouraged toapply for Financial Aid by May 1 if you plan to attend WSCCin the Fall Semester or by October 1 if you plan to attendWSCC the following Spring Semester. o ATTEND LIONS’ PRIDELions’ Pride Orientation sessions are conducted on specifieddates prior to the start of the semester. At the conclusion of

Lions’ Pride, you will be given the opportunity to meet withan advisor and discuss your educational plan. As part of thisprocess, you will be authorized to register in the Office ofAdmissions or online. Contact the ACTION Center at256.352.8040 for more information. o TAKE THE COMPASS PLACEMENT TESTThe purpose of COMPASS testing is to place you in theclasses most appropriate to your academic ability. You mayneed to enroll in transitional classes before taking otherhigher-level courses. If you received a 20 or higher ACTEnglish score and/or a 20 or higher ACT Math score withinthe last two years, this test may not be necessary. Walk-intests are given daily from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. For moreinformation please contact 256.352.8040 or visit ourACTION Center.

o ADVISEMENTAll students must complete the advisement process withtheir assigned advisor prior to registration for classes. Youwill need to bring your ACT scores or COMPASS placementscores with you. For more information please call256.352.8040 or visit our ACTION Center.

o NEW STUDENT ORIENTATIONAll entering freshmen are required to enroll in an orientationclass designed to assist students in the transition to college(ORI101, ORI103, or WKO101). For more information pleasecall 256.352.8040, contact your listed advisor, or visit ourACTION Center.

Lifelong LearningWallace State offers educationalopportunities to students of all ages,from camps for youngsters, toacadamies for high schoolers, toenrichment classes for senior adults.

Eligible senior adults interested incollege-level classes may receive atuition waiver through the WallaceState Financial Aid office. Popularprograms for seniors include art, music,horticulture, computer science,genealogy, upholstery, HeartLink andother fitness and wellness programs.

Adult EducationAdult Education classes are available tothose who wish to complete their GEDand enroll as a postsecondary student atWallace State, although some certificateprograms do not require a GED or highschool diploma. GED classes are offeredfree of charge on the Wallace Statecampus and affiliate sites. Through thisdepartment, job readiness, career skills

and English as a Second Language (ESL)classes are also available. For informationabout Adult Education, contact KelleyBlackwood at 256.352.8077 [email protected]. Short-term non-credit skillstraining courses are also offered inspecific areas for those seeking quickentry into the workforce. Did You Know? Community college graduates earn 24 percent more in the workplace today thantheir workplace counterparts with less education. Eighty percent of the new jobsavailable in the next decade will require a minimum of two years of postsecondaryeducation, making Alabama’s community colleges and Wallace State more impor-tant than ever.

The CampusWallace State is situated in north central Alabama in the town of Hanceville.Known as the “crown jewel” of the community college system for the beauty of its campus, the College is brimming with green spaces, including a veritablebotanical garden of trees and flowers, walking paths, rolling hills, outdoorrecreational areas, and a small lake, all of which provide an excellent backdropfor state-of-the art classrooms and facilities and the best environments forstudent learning and success. Wallace State’s physical campus has grown from

its original 1966 dimensions of four buildings on four acres to 42 buildings on 299acres today. Original buildings on campus include the newly renovated Electronics andDrafting Building, the Harlan G. Allen Math Building, the Banquet Hall and Cafeteria,and the General Studies Building that now houses Wallace State’s widely respectedCrime Lab and Criminal Justice department. The often photographed James C. BaileyCenter is, at 12 stories tall, the most widely recognized building on campus and thelocation of one-stop student services and administrative offices, classrooms, and collegeevents. (As this building undergoes renovation beginning in fall 2010, the offices withinwill be temporarily relocated.) Wallace State’s Coliseum, home to the nationallyrecognized women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams, seats 5,000spectators and is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the southeast. Other notablebuildings include residence halls for men and women, the Wallace State Library,Student Center, Science Complex, and seven-story Bevill Building. Among the newestbuildings on campus are the Health Sciences Building, which contains a dental clinic,and the Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, which boaststhe College’s $9.5 million art collection.

The College also operates off campus centers at J.B. Pennington High School inBlountsville, Brewer High School in Somerville, Addison High School, and Hayden HighSchool, and offers an array of online courses.

Wallace State is located approximately10 miles from Exit 291 on Interstate 65,and approximately one hour frominternational airports located inBirmingham to the south andHuntsville to the north. AthleticsFour Olympic medalists, five national championships, 18 ACCC All-Sports Trophies,numerous conference titles and hundreds of All-Americans…. Wallace State has a tradition of athletic excellence.

The Wallace State Lions compete in Division I of the Alabama Community CollegeConference and the National Junior College Athletic Association.

Many of our athletes go on to play at the university level in the sport of their choice.Some even sign professional contracts. MLB All-Star Craig Kimbrel of the AtlantaBraves, World Series pitcher Derek Holland of the Texas Rangers, Zelous Wheeler withthe Milwaukee Brewers, Jake Elmore with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and OaklandA’s pitcher Graham Godfrey are all currently playing professional baseball. CurrentPGA golfers include Brett Wetterich and Fredrick Jacobson.

Wallace State coaches are not only among the nation’s best, but they also take greatpride in the academic success of their athletes. Special tutoring and study sessions areavailable for all athletes to ensure excellence in academics as well as athletics.Wallace State teams are recognized among the top teams academically by theNJCAA, and many student athletes receive Academic All-American honors each year.

The impressive athletic facilities at Wallace State are among the best in the nation.Tom Drake Coliseum is one of the largest two-year college basketball and volleyballfacilities in the United States, with seating for more than 5,000. The College’sbaseball, softball and soccer facilities are among the finest in the Southeast.

Wallace State’s athletes also have access to state-of-the-art training through theWellness Center, which houses an extensive weight room, treadmills andcardiovascular equipment, racquetball courts, basketball and volleyball practicecourts, batting cages, aerobics and cheerleading rooms, men’s and women’s lockerrooms, classrooms, and offices.

ACTION CenterThe Wallace State ACTION Center is a one-stop, first-stop forstudents enrolling at Wallace State. In the ACTION Center, youcan meet with an academic advisor to plan your course of study,explore your interests and potential careers, make contracts withtransfer institutions, and take advantage of student successseminars. The University of Alabama has an admissions officerhere. Placement testing and new student orientation classes alsotake place here. The door is always open, so stop right in.

Campus SecurityAt Wallace State, public safety employees, including those inCampus Security and the Sheriff’s Office substation on campus,work to help students maintain personal safety by providing lawenforcement, environmental safety, security, emergencypreparedness, and educational programming services. WhileWSCC can never guarantee that accidents and criminal activitywill not occur, we make every effort to ensure that students,employees and visitors to campus enjoy a safe learningenvironment. A Lion Alert system notifies students of weather-related campus closings and other emergencies.

LibraryThe Wallace State Library provides a wide variety of traditionallearning resources for students as well as multimedia researchtools and an internet accessible computer lab for patron use. Arenowned genealogy research collection is also located in thelibrary. A qualified and friendly staff will assist you with yourresearch needs.

Residence HallsLiving on campus has many advantages. Wallace State’s men’sand women’s residence halls are equipped with desks andbookshelves, double beds, walk-in closets and private bathroomsas well as common kitchens, laundry facilities, and entertainmentareas. Internet access is also available. Dorms are convenientlylocated to classrooms, the library, cafeteria, and other campusfacilities. Dorm living is a great way to become involved in studentactivities and make new friends.

Student CenterThe Student Center is a central meeting place on campus,providing access to food, friends and fun. The Betty Leeth HaynesTheatre is located here, along with a big screen television, pingpong tables, billiards, and foosball tables. Seating and meetingareas provide places for students to hang out or study betweenclasses. The Student Center Grill serves meals Monday throughFriday.

Student LifeWhen students get ready to choose a college, they often wantto know not only about the programs offered but also about thepersonality of the place. Ask any Wallace State student oralumnus what sets the college apart, and they'll likely commenton two things: one is how friendly and helpful everyone is, andthe other is the beauty of the campus.

The campus is large enough to have a university campus-feelwith the activities only a large campus can bring, like performingarts events and athletics, and small enough that students andfaculty know each other by name. It is a campus that is safe,and is kept that way through campus security and a sharedsense of individual responsibility. When accidents or severeweather happen, an emergency alert system provides fast andreliable information.

Our faculty and staff go out of their way to provide the bestcollege experience for students, and to provide support andencouragement for students to adjust to college life, and todevelop and achieve their goals. That includes providingengaging activities for socializing with friends, as well aschallenges, opportunities, and inspiration for personal growth,from clubs and organizations to international travelopportunities to workshops and tutoring. At Wallace Statestudents find the right balance of comraderie and opportunity.

With more than 30 student clubs and organizations, studentshave many opportunities to find their place and contribute tothe college community. Students of any age can choose fromintramural sports, student government, drama club, and thestudent newspaper just to name a few. Homecoming, SpringFling, plays, concerts and other activities are just some of thethings that keep students connected with each other and fullyinvolved in college life.

Dual EnrollmentWallace State offers one of the largestdual enrollment programs in the state,so that high school students maysimultaneously earn credit for highschool and college academic courses.

Accelerated Learning/HonorsHigh school students who want totake college-level classes for collegecredit only and not as part of our dualenrollment program may do sothrough the Accelerated Learningprogram.

Tech-PrepThrough Tech-Prep, high school studentsinterested in technically-orientedprograms may participate in dualenrollment, earning simultaneous highschool and college credit.

Fast Track AcademyOur Fast Track Academy is a dualenrollment opportunity in whichstudents take all their classes on campusat WSCC. High school students have theopportunity to enter exciting careerfields in public safety, health care, andautomotive manufacturing.

STEM CampsSTEM (Science, Technology, Engineeringand Math) Camps in summer enablehigh school students to explore futurecareer possibilities in high-demand andhighly technical training areas. WallaceState is also a member of CARCAM, theConsortium for the Alabama RegionalCenter for Automotive Manufacturing,which aims to educate a highly-skilledworkforce for Alabama's growingautomotive industry.

Recent graduateChelsea Allen received the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship valued at up to$90,000. It is the largest and most competitive community college transfer scholarshipin the U.S. Former Wallace State SGA President Austin Monk was selected as a NewCentury Scholar, one of the highest national awards presented to community collegestudents.

Take Your Education to the Next Level...Wallace State Community College participates in the STARS statewide articulation system,which guarantees a seamless transfer from WSCC to any public four-year college oruniversity in the state of Alabama. Popular transfer programs include agriculture, business,education, engineering, law, medicine, pharmacy, social work, and veterinary medicine. The Athens State University Center, located on the Wallace State campus, offers a variety of courses and full baccalaureate degreesso all four years of a transfer degree program can be completed at Wallace State, in one location. Online courses are also available.Master’s degree programs will soon be offered.

Athens State University is a two-year upper division school providingjunior- and senior-level coursework toward completion of a bachelor’s degree.

An easy transfer to Athens State may be completed after 60 to 64 semester hours. Curriculum includes traditional and online classes, and flexible scheduling.

Wallace State also has special articulation agreements with a number of colleges and universities, including FaulknerUniversity for criminal justice, Auburn University for agriculture education, Jefferson State Community College forveterinary technician, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the University of Alabama for nursing, and an e-Connectpartnership with Troy University.

A transfer advisor from the University of Alabama has an office located on campus in the ACTION Center. This advisorwill help smooth a student’s transition from community college to any four-year university.

As the largest provider of two-year healthcare programs in the state, Wallace State also offers a Health LinkageProgram to students at other colleges who wish to take basic academic classes at their home institution beforetransferring to Wallace State to complete core courses in their chosen health care major.
