  • Extra-Curricular Programs in 2019 We are very excited that our band program for 2019 has commenced and we welcome back Bennelong Music and our conductors Gav and Frances who will be mentoring the training and concert bands. The 38 members of our training band have attended their second week of rehearsals and we are very excited to see the progress of both bands as they perform at school events and external competitions throughout the year. A big thank you to the parents who have taken on roles to support our successful band program. The junior and senior dance group auditions also commenced this week with senior auditions in the hall on Thursday morning and junior auditions on Friday morning. We also welcome back chess club and our Year 2 enrichment group who will be creating robot trucks to sort recycling using Lego WeDo robotics kits. We look forward to our PSSA sports teams competing this Friday and wish them the very best for the first week of competition. Our Spelling Mastery groups and Scripture and Ethics groups also commenced this week. Thank you to our teachers and volunteers who are supporting these extra-curricular activities across our school.

Parent Feedback In the ‘Tell them From Me’ survey last year, parents and carers indicated that they would appreciate further information on Cyber Safety, Technology as Tools for Learning, supporting mental health and wellbeing and literacy and numeracy support. Parents and carers also indicated that they would prefer information sessions to be held in the evening. We look forward to being able to offer information sessions for parents in these areas during 2019 and 2020, and will keep you informed of upcoming events. Please remember that our playgrounds are not supervised in the morning until 8:45 am. If children need to be at school prior to this time, please book your child into before school care to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Kind regards Caroline Desmond Principal

Schools Clean Up Day Friday 1 March 2019

Wakehurst Public School will be participating in the Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 1 March 2019. The Schools Clean Up Day aims to raise awareness in students of the impacts that littering and waste have on the environment and how their simple actions can make a difference. Students are asked to bring in a pair of gloves on the day to wear during the clean-up.

  • Years 3 - 6 News Forest High SRC Visit Year 6 students enjoyed a visit from a number of SRC students from The Forest High School on Monday 18 February. The visiting students were from Years 8-12 and spoke to Year 6 about many of the changes they can expect to experience as they move into high school. Subject choices, lockers and canteen food were the hot topics for discussion. Thank you to The Forest High School staff and students for taking the time to talk to us.

Meet the Teacher Night Thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to come along to our Meet the Teacher Evening on Wednesday. The teachers really appreciated your attendance and the ability to share information about their class with you. If you were unable to attend, please see your child’s teacher for an information handout. Also, if you have any questions or concerns at any time, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment to discuss your concerns. Emily Wares Assistant Principal

  • Library News

The library leaders have been busy training on the Oliver system, shelving books and helping junior students at lunch time. They love their new leadership role and I really appreciate their enthusiasm.

Year 2 - Library Working Bee On Wednesday 27 February from 2pm -3.15pm volunteers are needed to help in the library. I am asking parents/carers from Year 2 to volunteer this time. It is a nice way to meet other parents and help your school library. We will be covering books, weeding out old stock and tidying shelves. If you can spare just over an hour of your time to help, this we would be really appreciated.

Book Club Issue 1of the Book Club will arrive next week and will be distributed to

classrooms. Thanks for your support and enjoy reading these wonderful new books with your child.

  • MultiLit Volunteers

Calling all volunteers – our kids need you!

MultiLit (“Making Up Lost Time In Literacy”) is an effective literacy program grounded in scientific evidence-based, best practice, from Macquarie University. The MultiLit Program is continually informed by an ongoing program of research. For over two decades, it has provided assistance to thousands of students in a variety of settings. Wakehurst Public School has been running MultiLit in a small format for some years, limited by staffing. This year, with the help of volunteers, I would like to offer this support to even more students. All it requires is 2 hours of your time on any day of the week that suits you. If you could do more than one day, even better! Volunteers would be trained in the program allowing them to follow it confidently (It’s very straight forward). If you would be interested in supporting the program by donating time, or know of someone that may be interested (like a grandparent or member of the community) please let me know via the office or email to [email protected]. With thanks and appreciation Katrina Ross Learning and Support Teacher

Lego Club In 2019 WPS will be continuing the Lego Club twice a week on the Kindy veranda on Tuesdays and Fridays, at second half lunch times. The target audience will be K-3s, but everyone will be welcome. If you have any unloved Lego in your homes, we always love to get donations to top up our supply of lego bricks for our 2019 master builders! Katrina Ross Learning and Support Teacher

  • Wakehurst Band Program

The WPS Band Program welcomed 38 new students to their first training band rehearsal conducted by Bennelong music! In addition, the concert band welcomed graduating students from last year’s training band and is pleased to have 24 musicians playing this year. To accommodate the growing band size the P and C procured a new drum set and two new 88 note keyboards enabling 2 children per keyboard harmonising together. A new amp can receive input from several guitars and keyboards not only allowing more instruments but also creating a more uniform sound. Bennelong Music is also offering lessons after school making band logistics easier for families. The band community is looking forward to showcasing new and old talent later this year at various assemblies, school and public events! Should any band parents be interested in supporting the band please contact [email protected]. The band committee invites band parents to the next meeting held on February 26t at 7pm at the Belrose Hotel. Karen Sawarna Band Coordinator

P&C Events & Fundraising Welcome Night – It was great seeing all the new faces at the drinks and nibbles after “Meet the Teacher” on Wednesday night. Welcome to all our new families! Movie Night – Our next event is next Friday 1 March. Flexischools has not yet updated the website with this event, but have assured us it will be by the end of the week. Get your tickets by Thursday 28 Feb. We also need helpers to supervise the kids on the night, so please let us know if you can help. NSW Election – this is a great opportunity to fundraise within the wider community. We’ll be running a cake stall and sausage sizzle so if you can help by baking cakes, running the stall or cooking the BBQ, more info to come. Kindy Cup Cake Day – the kindy parents will be baking up a storm later in March, cupcakes will be sold to the children for a gold coin. • Wakehurst OSHC Centre

WAKEHURST OSHC CENTRE Email address: [email protected] Mobile: 0427 255 966 Welcome Back to WOSHC!

We’d love to welcome back all our familiar faces and new families to Wakehurst Primary OSHCare. We are excited for the fun and exciting things to come this year. We hope all of your children have settled back into school routines and are excited and happy with their new classes. This year we have a wonderful team with Ellie Smit, Erin King, Maryam Sepehr (Mary) and Ella Cansdell returning, and welcome our new team members Piper Koch and Charlie Morgan. We try to maintain consistent staff here at Wakehurst to ensure a smooth continuous care for all children.

We try to ensure that we are incorporating all of the children’s interests and skills when making our program. This is done through documentation, observations, emerging interests, daily evaluations after each session and child profiles. As a part of our program we do offer a Health and Wellbeing program each term which runs for 5 weeks. We are fortunate enough to have 2 coaches come to our centre twice a week and teach the children their chosen sport at no additional cost for families. The children are given the opportunity to vote for the sport/activity they wish to do for the Health and Wellbeing program. This term we will be having Dodgeball each Wednesday starting from the 13/02 and Cheerleading starting the 15/02. Any information that you may require can be found on the parents table with the sign in and out tablet and the parent board. Should you wish to ever contact the

centre, you can find our contact details at the bottom of all newsletters, emails and on the Wakehurst Primary OSHCare website. We would also like to remind families that as per our non-notified absent procedure, you will be charged a fee of $30 if you do not notify the Centre of your child’s absence for the afternoon. This fee is due to the time it takes for staff to find the whereabouts of your child. You can notify the staff of an absence via email or phone. At the beginning of the term we began to discuss and review our Centre Agreement in collaboration with the educators. By having group discussions this strengthens and develops children’s sense of identity, strong sense of wellbeing, contribution and connection to their world, communication skills and confidence in learning. If you wish to contact the centre, please do so on 0427 255 966 or by emailing [email protected] Kind Regards, Ellie, Erin and the WOSHC Team 😊😊
