How you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

SEPTIC TANK OWNERS

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is cost effective.By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening

Problematic septic tanks– treat with Septi-Cure™.Prevent septic system problems– treat with Septi-Cure™.

your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through

to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Animal welfare fund boosted

by Paul Campbell

Overlooked by many within the fine details of last month’s budget from the government was a $10 million package over four years designed to beef up New Zealand’s animal welfare systems — supporting a new law that too, has just taken effect.

Primar y Industries minister Nathan Guy said the investment will support changes in the new Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law last month and some of the money will go to informing the industry of those changes.

“Some of this funding will go towards creating targeted education that ensures the right people know what is required of them.

“As well as strengthening the enforcement of animal welfare requirements, the investment will also contribute to the SPCA’s work in animal welfare. In particular, it will further support its compliance function.”

“New Zealand already has a strong reputation for animal welfare,” Mr Guy says.

“ H o w e v e r, t h e expectations of consumers and society are constantly changing and our farming systems are continually evolving. This investment will support changes in the new Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law this month. These changes have made animal welfare obligations clearer, more transparent and easier to enforce.

“They will also ensure New Zealand is well placed to maintain its strong reputation and world class animal welfare system into the future.”

The new funding will go towards developing new regulations through

Nathan Guy, Primary Industries Minister

the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, improving compliance and enforcement capability and managing the welfare of animals in a civil defence emergency.

“Our primary sector makes a critical contribution to our economy. New Zealand earns around $25 billion a year by exporting animal products such as meat, milk and wool.

Our global reputation as a safe food producer depends on us continuing to produce animal products within strong animal welfare standards.”

Federated farmers supports PCE report

Federated Farmers welcomes the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment’s report on Managing Water Quality, which supports their long held position that the National Policy Statement is a major step forward for water management in New Zealand.

Dr Jan Wright has reflected on what has been an effective couple of years since her last report, with a sense of significant momentum in the regions. She has made six recommendations which overall Federated Farmers agree with, excluding concerns around the exceptions policy.

“We agree with the commissioner’s recommendation for a more strategic approach in prioritising the more vulnerable catchments. To date some councils have spread their efforts too far and thin when they needed to prioritise and make some real progress on the ones that are under the most pressure,” said Federated Farmers Environment spokesperson, Ian MacKenzie.

“Federated Farmers has been asking for greater certainty and clarification on the implementation of the NPS for freshwater management for some time, and agrees with the commissioner’s focus on the need for this in ‘maintaining and improving’ water bodies and freshwater management zoning.”

“While the NPS has a lot of uncertainty and needs some clarification it has been a major leap forward for managing water quality in New Zealand. It has put a framework and set a direction for how we are to proceed, all it needs is some tightening in some areas so it puts us all in the same boat,” he said. “We are less comfortable with Jan Wrights’ recommendation around the exceptions policy because it appears to be giving urban authorities and urban infrastructure the ability to opt out of the NPS.

“The overarching theme of this report is that we need to focus on the bigger

Federated Farmers Environment spokesperson, Ian MacKenzie

picture and clearly define what that is. Everything we do needs to be about the end game values that we set under the NPS.”

Federated Farmers is involved with helping the government further populate the National Objectives Framework, and in that capacity they have already supported the inclusion of Macroinvertebrate Community Index and estuaries.

He said, “The inclusion of the MCI tool will help us keep our eyes on the prize rather than getting bogged down in the details and getting tunnel vision on what we think are the priorities.

“Federated Farmers has launched its very own ‘Water Team’ to do just that. We want to empower the provinces to be at the table providing robust and fit for purpose information that will help shape the end goal, so that regulators can make decisions which are in line with the science.”

The charolais breed has always appealed to Paul, who has 100 cows for the stud and also

fattens 250 local trade cattle per year which are predominantly charolais.

Paul says: “The stud is no hobby, you have to do it right. A lot of money has been spent on new sires which has produced better stock. The genetics we have introduced are slowly improving, it’s not an overnight wonder, it takes time and patience.

“If you are ruthless in the culling, and don’t allow substandard animals to come through, things do improve. I don’t believe we can cut corners in this game on seed stock.

“Two of our bulls were in the top two per cent of the country but we had to kill one very recently as he got injured, which is a bummer. There’s a lot of heartbreak at times but it’s all part of the game.

“If an expensive animal is bought and it doesn’t perform, get rid of it, it means saving a lot of money.”

He says there has been three dry summers which has not been conducive to good stock.

He doesn’t think summer safe is the norm anymore, and people have to realise the animals also have to cope with that. “We have changed our fertiliser, with more lime going on

CHAROLAISARE HERE TO STAY

Paul and Claire Graingers’ property in the Waitomo district is a 600 hectare farm which along with 2000 sheep is home to the Kia Toa

the pasture than phosphate. It suits our programme, and we are starting to see an improvement in the quality of our grass — we are getting shorter but thicker pasture.

“We have built our own sales pavilion and viewing pens on site. This makes things easier for the stock.“

He says now is a good time for those who have stuck with the beef industry, they are finally reaping a few benefits and hanging in there is paying off. “This year we have stock well over 800

kilograms. They are genuine hill country bulls being fed only grass and haylage.

“We produce stock that can handle living on the hills because that is where beef are housed now. We produce 200 bales of haylage to cover any shortage of grass and we are trying to keep our supplementary expenditure as low as possible.”

Paul believes lots gets thrown at farmers, new grasses, new products, new fertilisers, and he thinks it gets confusing. “It doesn’t hurt to be a little

old fashioned and it’s important to stick to the fundamental basics.

Farming seems to go through fazes and we are encouraged to get into this and get into that, but every farm is different.

“My dad often said to me ‘if you follow trends, you never catch them, be a trendsetter’. Some things we do here, others wouldn’t.

“We still do a lambing beat because to me a lamb saved is a lamb saved. If 30– 40 lambs per year are saved, that is a lot of saving.

Our stud is in very good heart, and we are finding it harder to cull animals. If you feed them well they will return the favour, it is feeding as much as

breeding. The Graingers will carry on with the breed for a very long time.

“It adds another dimension to farming — we are farmers first and breeders second.

“Our stud stock do not get any preferential treatment, they have to perform under normal farming practices and if not they are culled.

Claire does the bookwork whilst their eldest son Rhys and his wife Holly and two grandchildren are on a farm near Taumarunui, and second son Mark is shearing full time. Their daughter Stacey is teaching in Scotland and Hannah their youngest daughter is still at school.

“We help each other and life’s definitely more fun with grandchildren.”

NEW ZEALAND’S LARGEST RANGE OF BEEKEEPING SUPPLIES

After 30 years as dairy farmers, Paul and Natalie Woods decided it was time for a change of

lifestyle and set about creating a riding facility to suit all needs.

The family’s love of horses began when Natalie went hunting with a friend roughly 12 years ago.

From then on she was hooked and when their daughters Jessica and Mikayla were around 12 years old they both began to show an interest in horses as well.

At ages 22 and 20 respectively, both are now involved in most disciplines including show jumping, dressage and hunting. Jessica was recently selected to represent New Zealand in the Oceania Senior Trans Tasman three star event in Taupo and Mikayla is also no stranger

to high level competition either. She was a member of the NZ Young Rider Development Squad for dressage last season.

“When we were starting out with horses, we found it really hard to find somewhere for all of us to go and be able to do our own thing.

“Sometimes one of us wanted to practise dressage while the others wanted to show jump and it was difficult to find a place where we could do this, so we created our own. Everyone can come to Little Valley Farm and enjoy everything,” said Natalie.

“It is definitely a family business. We believe it is the only private facility in the Waikato that offers an indoor arena, a show jumping arena and a cross country course.”

Little Valley Farm is paradise for horses and riders alike with its 50 acres of rolling farmland in Ohaupo, Waikato, crafted to provide a unique riding experience from beginners to experts and everyone in between.

The Little Valley Farm cross country jump

This course was professionally designed and built by internationally acclaimed builder Robbie McLean. It offers jumps for beginners through to pre-novice and novice riders and the arena allows showjumpers to practise, and layouts can be changed to suit the individual rider’s requirements.

“The beautifully presented indoor arena means people can train in all weather and in winter, even the jumps get taken indoors so people can ride 24/7, 365 days a year,” said Natalie.

“It is fully equipped with everything you need including natural light for daytime and extensive lighting for the

evening. There are generous sized mirrors for schooling and a great sound system for those wishing to practise their musical freestyle tests or just enjoy some background music.”

The venue has been carefully planned so that the public can enjoy the space as much as they do, hiring it out to encourage others to play in their backyard.

The premises make horse riding accessible for groups of friends arranging a catch-up, to national and international trainers for fun, competition and clinics.

“Our next exciting development stage includes a breeding programme using

two colts we have bred ourselves, using natural standing, with lineage including the likes of His Royal Highness, Landro L and Sandreo, and the building of a round pen complex to complement this,” said Natalie.

Not only does Little Valley Farm provide a wide range of facilities for all horse disciplines, it also hosts a range of events varying from international instructors to cattle sales during the field days and dog agility clinics.

“People also come to sell their horses at the yard and use it as a chance to show them off and there are dressage tutors available every month.”

“It is an equestrian lovers’ playground — the farm is equipped with all a rider needs for a fun day out with their horse.”

Covering the seeds with pine needles by hand for healthy growth

ginseng since 2006 when the plant was first introduced to the company by New Zealand Crop and Food with a man named Jae Lee from Korea. He came to the country believing he could grow the plant under pine trees in the central North island.

The active ingredient in ginseng is believed to boost the immune system. It is good for cognitive function and it gives an energy boost better than caffeine. In Chinese herbal history it is known as the king of herbs due to its strength giving properties and ability to balance all the minerals in the body.

“We had considered cultivating truffles and shiitake mushrooms but they were not suitable to grow under pine trees or in our climate,” says Mr Katu.

“The ginseng was an exciting opportunity and we certainly had the trees in our forests for it to grow under with cold winters, dry summers and free draining soil. We embraced the opportunity to try and succeed with this crop.

“A Korean farmer came to manage the project with our staff in the beginning. He had asked if we have deer and pig, we said yes, he said ‘that’s ok, they won’t worry the crop’ but he didn’t realise we had rabbits and finches. Our first two trials became bunny and bird food, it was a good fresh meal.”

“We invested in pest proof fencing and replanted for a third time. The plants survived and we have had very positive growing index results.

“The risk was worth it. We had to get through eight years of growing time

and have the project monitored for a few years.

In 2007 they employed 27-year-old Daniel Benefield from Piopio who had a horticulture diploma.

He is now the operations manager and a team have travelled to Asia and America to learn from the experts all they could to make the project the success it has become.

It is the first crop in the country to be grown the wild simulated way — without fertilisers and pesticides, growing as naturally as possible.

Once they proved the crop could be a success they invested and expanded the plantation which is now more than 20 acres.

“New Zealand ginseng grows in half the time as Asian and American because our cold snap is a much shorter period,” says Mr Katu.

“This is a great advantage for the company as the crop is harvested in seven years instead of 14.

“The roots have been tested for taste, feel and look compared to the native Asian plants and all tests have come back positive which means the value is high.

The company are in the process to expand dramatically with investors who have market and distribution channels for their ginseng products in China as well as investing in the business.

Now on the commercial market, the first product they have available is a ginseng gift pack range which hit the New Zealand market in February.

“This is a high quality gift to give especially to the older Asian generation.

A root of ginseng is a show piece, it is best in perfect form and preferably in an animal or person shape to wish a person good health,” says Mr Katu.

“The company will go on providing for generations to come as we develop new products such as health capsules and tea under the brand Pure-Ora, which means ‘Wellness’.”

They also provide advice for others wanting to farm Ginseng. For more information email [email protected]

Indoor vs Outdoor Farming

®

by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

During the 1950’s New Zealand pastoral farmers were the best and most cost effective producers on our planet and the rest of the world was trying to emulate us.

New Zealand was the envy of the globe with our cows, sheep and beef being outdoors, grass fed and healthy, everyone wanted our products and our financial position was very strong. The average dairy farm back then was 40 hectares, supporting up to 2 families and beef and sheep farms were all sizes, our country was pumping and from the flow on effects of our agricultural people, these were good times. The country towns were booming and everybody had a job and money was circulating.

Production was a lot easier then with plenty of grass out in front of the animals and neighbours were helping one another to make hay and silage. It was a nice thing to be doing, the food was great and beer came in big bottles. Our scientists back then were setting

new standards for agriculture; they were allowed to think for themselves, were genuinely independent and paid by the New Zealand taxpayer. By the mid 1980’s toxic chemicals had filtered into the farming communities and the chemical corporations had partnered up with our agricultural universities.

In the mid 1980’s I had set up business in central California growing and marketing Kiwano (horned melons) which together with New Zealand production kept me in the global markets for 12 months of the year. During this period I came across, what is termed as industrial farming where animals are kept in huge sheds and feed and water is supplied to them. I first recognised this system of production by the nostril biting stench of urine and excrement —

A D V E RT O R I A L

not nice. You could smell it from miles away as you drove up the I5 freeway in California.

The latest figures out this year, for industrial dairy farming in the USA are; the average milking life for a cow is 20 months, they are milked 4 times per day, injected with hormones to produce more milk and because of confinement are regularly injected with antibiotics. The bulk of feed supplied to them is maize, (more than likely G.M.O maize). Grains are great for chickens and hogs but when fed to rumen animals the maize causes acidosis resulting in mastitis. During milking the pus from mastitis is going into the milk making it unfit for human consumption — so much for industrial farming.

While I was in California last month, farmers were talking about going back to family size farms in an endeavour to produce better quality food for a better way of life. We already have this system working in New Zealand. It creates more employment for the families. Production on a family run farm will always outperform industrial farming. The animals are better cared for and with good management and Rok Solid fertilisers farmers can keep grass out in

front of the animals and produce all their grass supplement requirements on the farm, without disturbing the pasture, the soil or the bank balance.

First and foremost you need to remineralise your soils and pack those soils up with microorganisms and that’s what Agrissentials specialise in: multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. Plus free, non-toxic, real nitrogen: straight out of our atmosphere and stored in the organic matter of the soil, for release on demand by the plant — great for the farm, the environment and definitely the pocket.

Call Agrissentials today and begin a new relationship with your farm — with June’s fantastic fieldays’ special of 10% off all Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers, there’s never been a better time to give them a go. Rural broadband from SparkFrustrated rural communities with substandard internet access have help on the way with Spark announcing its pricing for their new Rural Wireless Broadband.

“The 4G solution uses a self-installed antenna which simply attaches to the wireless modem.

“Customers can plug-in and go immediately without waiting for technicians or the need for cables and large aerials,” said head of mobility products David Redmore.

“Spark’s 4G Rural Wireless Broadband network uses more than 150 — 700MHz cell towers operating around rural New Zealand. The towers are specifically designed for rural areas. They are great as they do not rely on lines.

Spark has more 700MHz spectrum than any other operator in New Zealand so it can offer the best performance and a seamless experience.”

Dairy farmer Tony Walters recently installed Spark Rural Wireless Broadband on his Aka Aka property. He says within minutes of getting the equipment he was able to connect at over 50Mbps — that’s equal to speeds on fibre broadband networks, and up to ten times faster than some existing 3G products.

“Data and computing is now an important part of any farming business. We need a reliable and fast broadband connection to monitor and maximise the efficiency of the farm.

“This gives us the speed I require for processing data and provides my family the broadband capacity they need It’s a far better solution than what we’ve had in the past.”

The new faster alternative to existing slower rural broadband products will cost $95 a month for 80GB of data and $105 per month for broadband, a landline and national calling.

Spark’s service also comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Those interested can register online at store.spark.co.nz/forms/s/rural-wireless-broadband.

Mystery Creek spells success

by Paul Campbell

With in excess of 126,000 visitors, the Fieldays at Mystery Creek were judged a huge success with the final day featuring the Rural Bachelor of the Year announced along with the winners from the tractor pull events and the people’s choice awards.

Bachelor winner Toby How said the moment his win was confirmed was ‘surreal’.

“The whole week’s been amazing, going back to work on Monday will be a shock to the system.”

The tractor pull winners were were also announced in three categories — weight adjusted, weight transfer and modified.

Coordinator Andrew Reymer said the wins went to “older guys who had more experience, had been around for a while and knew how to handle it.”

Innovations were applauded with visitors giving 1,000 votes to Easy-Use Feed Bin Wires for it’s simple solution to control feeding.

In second place was Safety Buddy for its Bluetooth enabled safety device, and in third place was Fence Detective for its smartphone app for testing if electric fences are live.

The site awards saw Makita NZ Ltd taking out the overall trophy. The top

theme site was taken home by the University of Waikato, as the exhibitor that best portrayed the event theme — Growing Our Capability in Agribusiness.

“Our team wanted to showcase the breadth and quality of work that the University of Waikato is undertaking, particularly where we’ve been working with Waikato to solve business and environmental challenges,” said spokesman Simon Bush.

The Fieldays planning executive, Jacqui Cooper, added that once again it was exciting to see what exhibitors came up with for their sites, as was the case each year.

“Set up starts weeks before the event begins and there is so much work that goes into these sites. It’s a full construction zone here in the lead up and it’s fantastic to see it all come together.”

The national agricultural showcase will be back at Mystery Creek next year from June 15 to 18.

A benefi cial systemA D V E RT O R I A L

Lindsay and the team at Clean Green Effl uent Company would like to thank all the farmers and suppliers they met at the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek.

It was a great opportunity to meet people and have discuss one of the biggest issues dairy farmers are facing, — how to effectively manage farm effl uent whilst remaining environmentally friendly.

Lindsay Lewis, founder and Managing Director of Clean Green Effl uent Co said “I found a huge amount of interest from farmers who have found previous systems very expensive, cumbersome and diffi cult to maintain. “We had a lot of discussion from people who were fascinated with the water savings the Clean Green System can deliver to their farms.” says Lindsay.

“One of the benefi ts of our system is the reduction of fresh water consumption from the industry standard of 50-60 litres per cow per day, to under 20 litres by utilising our automated yard greenwash system. When this is coupled with the reduction in rainfall catchment the Clean Green System has over traditional mega-ponds, the reductions are huge.

I was talking to one farmer who will be reducing the amount of effl uent he has to

disperse by over 20,000,000 litres per year by installing a Clean Green Effl uent System.”

“In this day and age farmers are becoming more aware of the need to balance environmental impacts with effective farm management, and this was particularly evident at this years Fieldays.

The support we are getting from local councils in installing sustainable effl uent systems to help manage water quality issues

is very gratifying” said Lindsay. If you missed talking to the team from Clean Green Effl uent Company, be sure to check out their website www.cleangreeneffl uent.co.nz, or give them a call on 0800 400 365.

Presco Group is noticing a distinct shift from low-cost, short-term thinking to a growing number of progressive farmers investing in future-proofed, professionally designed and built effl uent management systems. The new focus is a marriage of maximising fi nancial returns from this naturally-derived, nutrient-rich waste and achieving best practices environmental sustainability.

The dairy industry has matured. The sayings ‘do it once, do it right’ and ‘you get what you pay for’ have never been as relevant as they are to farm dairy effl uent management today. A dairy farmer recently recounted his saga with a traditional lined earthen pond to Presco Group. The initial lower ingoing cost swayed him in favour of a lined pond. However once a stirrer cut through the liner without being detected,

the cost of the subsequent pond draining, liner removal, earthwork remediation, and liner repair and re-fi t was more than a permanent concrete Prosump would have been originally, and a whole lot more hassle.

The Prosump is becoming New Zealand’s preferred dairy effl uent sump due to a number of unique features. Its deep vertical wall and special fl oor design delivers a smaller footprint land use than traditional lined ponds of the same operational volume. It can be installed totally in-ground aiding gravity fl ow even in high water table areas. The circular walls and sloping fl oor design enhances stirring and minimises solids build-up.

The most obvious benefi t is the durable concrete construction, which will outlast any other option on the market and requires zero

maintenance. The Prosump is created for NZ conditions. Its robust design was developed by a certifi ed IPENZ engineer to withstand earthquakes and the worst of our rugged weather conditions.

Presco Group provides a total-package solution to take the mystery out of FDE requirements.

Qualifi ed consultants will calculate your long-term effl uent collection and storage needs to exceed council and dairy company requirements, provide a detailed project

quotation, project manage the entire installation from earthworks and construction to fi nal land reinstatement, and commissioning of the system which includes a water-tightness guarantee.

Presco Group is a NZ leading supplier of FDE management infrastructure and the sole manufacturer and installer of Prosump effl uent sumps.

To discuss sustainable FDE management options NZ-wide, call Presco Group on 0800 PRESCO (0800 77 37 26) or email [email protected]

EFFLUENTPONDFULL?

Breach of banking code costs bank millionsAustralian customers and small businesses taking on their banks over rip-offs have won a massive boost after a landmark court ruling in the Australian Victoria State Supreme Court that requires financial institutions to stick to their own code of conduct.

The precedent setting judgement will cost the National Australia Bank Limited millions of dollars and has sparked a scramble from the banking industry as it means the banking code of conduct goes from being a guide to contractually binding.

The National Australia Bank suffered the defeat in court after it tried to argue that the industry’s self regulatory code of conduct has no legal effect.

It is ironical that our own New Zealand banks also claim that their code of banking practice is voluntary and is also not legally binding.

Australian Supreme Court Judge Justice James Elliott has ruled that the banking code has contractual force and because the National Australia Bank breached it, the bank could not recoup $6 million in loan guarantees for a series of Gold Coast property investments. The judgement means

that the National Australia Bank cannot enforce the guarantees made by Mr Rose. This judgement places a spotlight, not only on the Australian banking code of practice but also on the New Zealand Bankers Association code of banking practice, as New Zealand Court decisions commonly follow Australian Court decisions, and those of Canada and the United Kingdom.

Farmers of New Zealand support the New Zealand code of banking practice becoming enforceable in New Zealand law. It is not good enough for banks to simply hide behind the code of banking practice, claiming it is a voluntary agreement based on goodwill and intentions.

The majority of New Zealand banks are owned by Australian banks, therefore the New Zealand banking code of practice should become legally enforceable in New Zealand where they operate and

enjoy ever increasing profits. Farmers of New Zealand also support the re-introduction into Parliament of the Farm Debt Mediation Bill which, in the past, has not been supported by the vast majority of politicians.

While in New Zealand the number of bank foreclosures has declined, economists warn that those who currently have extended themselves in taking out mortgage loans could be exposed in the next New Zealand economic downturn, which may not be too far away if the Auckland real estate

market funded by overseas immigrants crashes. New Zealand Institute of Economic Research said even when mortgage sale numbers were high during the global financial crisis, New Zealand did not have the same default rate as the United States, where homeowners could “post back their keys” if property values collapsed. The reality is that you can’t walk away from your mortgage in New Zealand. Most farm mortgagee sales end up with the farming families losing their livelihoods and all of their possessions.

Are they in the zone? Are your cows in their ‘personal cowzone’? Are they happy? I have been going on about causes of lameness now for quite some time.

I talk to many people about their lameness issues and it still strikes me how ingrained the stone bruise theory is, and the conviction that white line separation is caused from twisting and turning on concrete.

Even when all the evidence is stacked up against these theories, people are reluctant to let go of their long held beliefs. I appreciated recent comments from some people who admitted that it doesn’t make sense to hang onto their old beliefs, but they were just not ready to let go yet. That is very honest and also helpful for you to realise that about yourself, and it has also helped me to have more appreciation for the struggles that people can have to change their management on the farm because it still ‘does not feel right’. This comes out particularly in the way cows are trimmed.

Even though I can appreciate some of those struggles, I do want to emphasise the importance of basing your decisions on facts and logic rather than basing them on gut feelings. We recently ran some seminars with Marloes Levelink, of Cows 101, on Cow Signals. It came out very strongly again how a lot of the issues we are dealing with are, in essence, cow comfort issues.

When a cow cannot behave as she normally would she is more prone to stress and therefore to problems. We can often look at our cows and think that they are happy with their environment but it is very easy to overlook things

Hoof Print with Fred Hoekstra HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

because we are looking at our farms from a human perspective and that may not be how a cow experiences the farm.

As Marloes was saying in the seminars: ‘We have to look, think and act — Why do cows do what they do? Why are they standing by the gate even if there is plenty of grass in the paddock and it is still an hour or so before milking? Why do cows not clean out the meal trough? Why do they not walk back to the paddock after milking? Why are there parts of the track covered with cow muck? And so on . . . One thing we can say in response is that ‘this is just the way it is’, and leave it at that.

This way of reasoning, however, is not acknowledging a problem and certainly not eliminating a problem. There is always a reason why cows do things.

If we don’t know why certain things happen, we need to investigate. Ask other people, look on Google or use whatever other research options we have.

A good way to start looking at behaviour is by asking the question, ‘would a cow show this behaviour in the wild where she has access to everything she wants (water, food, shelter, resting place etc), and if not, why not? Therefore, what can we do to improve the situation for the cow? This is the key to better run farms, increased productivity and less lameness.

Wear a helmet.A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

Re-imagined, reinforced and ready to workby Andy Bryenton

When it comes time to choose a new ATV quad for the farm, and especially one to be put through a grueling rote of farming chores by farm staff daily, it’s not the bells and whistles which count.

It’s toughness, reliability, and to a large extent price which dictate a shrewd investment. Which is not to say that rider comfort, safety, storage options and power don’t come into the mix, it’s just that, dollar for dollar, most Kiwi farmers are looking for a working tool, not a recreational toy. Can Am have been providing ATV quads for the New Zealand farmer for quite a while now, along with farmers around the world. They’ve been quick to realise that the most hated thing of all, on rural spreads from Arkansas to Akaroa, is maintenance downtime. That’s why they’ve toughened up their new, low-priced, high-durability Outlander 450L series, producing a new, single seater ATV which is all about more bang for your buck.

It’s a no-frills approach, focused on work, not necessarily play. Racing stripes and alloy mags give way to a smarter air cleaner system, a re-imagined 450cc, liquid cooled Rotax four stroke providing 38 horsepower. Even the frame has

moved past tubular steel, using less bolts and less welds for long-lasting structural rigidity.

The suspension has been improved with more travel over the bumps both front and back, and a new double front A-arm system to reduce dive in the corners. As usual, there’s Can Am’s trademark trailing torsional independent system at the back, keeping things smooth and in control.

All of which should be no surprise, Can Am, like their rivals in both the USA and Asia, have to innovate and improve to survive in the ATV world. What is different, though, is the price. Visit any Can Am dealership and you will be surprised at the low cost of the new L series of Outlanders, as well as the comprehensive nature of their warranty. It’s all part of a concerted push by Can Am to wrestle the rural utility quad crown from its contenders, one which can only gain momentum with products like these hitting the forecourts and paddocks for the 2015/16 season.

Helping near and farA D V E RT O R I A L

After spending one month in Papua New Guinea watching the women cook three times a day on wood fi res too big for their pots, Paul McFarlane came up with an invention to help them in their daily life and called it the Rocket-Two-In-One.

These stainless steel rocket cookers are designed so water can be easily boiled for drinking whilst cooking.

It is ideal for natural disasters or anywhere that water must be boiled before being consumed.

The cooker is also great for camping and hunting as it is fuelled by small bush sticks in the base unit which holds approximately 12 litres of water, and when the fi re is going, a pot, frying pan or wok can be

placed on the top of the cooker. Paul has a background in engineering and mechanics and was inspired when he saw the original rocket cookers.

He and a friend came up with the idea of the water jacket when he was staying with a traditional village on the coast of Madang.

“Life is very basic there and there is no running water. They must dig wells by hand and sometimes these are not far away from long drops.

“The drinking water can get contaminated and there is a lot of sickness. This cooker gives people the chance to get away from that sickness. I have cooked a Papua New Guinea boil up on it using taro, banana and chicken. I cooked this for two hours and used approximately 1.4 kilo of sticks feeding seven people. It’s a great product for any company wanting to donate to any charities as your name and logo can be etched into cookers.”

The Rocket-Two-In-One does not require a permit as the fi re in contained so it is ideal

for hunters, campers, and even scouts. Paul took a demo cooker with him the last time he visited Papua New Guinea and said there was already a lot of interest.

“We have kept the cookers cheap so families can afford them,” he says.

“We aren’t doing these to make a lot of money but more to help people in their daily lives thus we have kept the price very low, a retail of NZ$149 each, making these more affordable to those in need.”

A ‘priceless’ look at rural lifeby Ann Morgan

With requests from his many readers of his previous book, ‘Farming and Yarning’, Barry Styles’ latest work ‘Priceless Bullshit’ recounts more stories, experiences, events and happenings he was involved in, heard about or yes, made up over time.

He is described by some as an interesting character, and people refer to him as somewhat like Barry Crump. Now in his 80s, he lives near Mangawhai in Northland with his wife Jan, whom he dedicates the book to, ‘considering she stood beside, behind and in front of him for 40 years,’ not forgetting his children of course.

“Some of the yarns you will find here may appear to be a little risqué. If you can’t remember how to spell that just say ‘a bit over the top’,” says Brian.

Bull’s, sheep and home gardeners all have something in common, a very valuable product which makes manure, and as his humour talks you through such stories, you will quite possibly smile for days.

The mostly real stories will give you some good laughs as you get a picture of

what rural New Zealand back block living was like from the early 1940s onward.

Back in the day with potties under beds and “when at boarding school perfectly good lamb roasts and chops obviously went to waste, because we only ever got stew for the three years I was there.”

Priceless Bullshit is well worth the read, for fathers, brothers, uncles and others, anyone who appreciates good, easy humour. Real or not, it doesn’t really matter, what matters is it is a book of mystery, memory and humour.

Written by a man, who has been there and done that, or so he says, and the best part about it is he is kindly donating all profits to the ‘Make a Wish’ foundation.
