Balloon spectacular for Waikato

Hot air balloonists from all over the globe will attend the Balloons Over Waikato festival from April 3-7

The event has drawn hot air balloon pilots from all over the globe.

“We are an international event,” said Classic Events managing director Michele Connell.

“So balloonists come from as far as Europe, USA and Brazil, with a contingent of Australians attending every year.

“The event is free, making it one of the last large scale free events in the country.”

As many as thirty balloons are expected during the five-day event which starts with the Hamilton city ascension launch on April 3. Balloons will be co-ordinated to lift off simultaneously at 7.30am from six parks across the city. At approximately 5.30pm, the balloons will once again commence inflation and fly from Hamilton Lake’s Innes Common.

by Denise Gunn

Hot air balloons of various shapes, sizes and colours will take to the skies in April during the Balloons Over Waikato festival.

Around 6.30am the following morning, a number of balloons will lift off from Innes Common just before dawn. The remainder of the balloons will rise as dawn breaks. The first 2000 people who arrive on the grounds will receive a free breakfast thanks to Fonterra, Sanitarium and Waikato Environment Centre Hamilton.

In the afternoon, the balloons will be on display at Westfield Chartwell between 3-6pm, providing an opportunity for children to have a tethered balloon ride from the roof top carpark.

On April 5 the balloons will commence inflation at Innes Common and various schools around Hamilton. Pilots will talk to the pupils and if weather permits launch from the school fields. The Balloons Over Waikato parade will take place down Hamilton’s Hood Street at 7pm.

The cash grab competition will take place around 7.30am the following day when balloonists will attempt to remove $1,000 from the top of a pole at Innes Common.

Between 4-9pm the nightglow at Waikato University will feature an orchestrated balloon glow show and fireworks finale.

“We outgrew our previous nightglow venue and now see approximately 80,000 spectators attend the nightglow,” said Ms Connell.

“Over the years many new ideas and initiatives have been added, making it fresh and exciting every year.”

The final day of the festival will see the balloons provide tethered rides for children for a gold coin donation at Innes Common. All proceeds will go towards Lions International Clubs.

“It is a fantastic event, made all the better because the whole five days are free.”

Helping out during the drought

Taumarunui farmer Bill Love (centre) made two 200km trips to deliver grain and fencing to the Emmett’s livestock animal sanctuary at Te Akau after reading their story in last month’s issue of Waikato Farming Lifestyles. Jacqui Emmett is on the right and her daughter Charlea on the left

When Taumarunui farmer Bill Love read a story about Jacqui Emmett and her family’s efforts to provide a sanctuary for livestock animals in last month’s issue of Waikato Farming Lifestyles, he wondered how he could help out.

A short time later he was travelling north with a trailer-load of barley and a few rolls of recycled chain link fencing to deliver to the Emmett’s Little Acres Farm.

Bill wasn’t entirely sure where in Te Akau the Emmett’s lived, but he wasn’t daunted by the task of tracking them down. He stopped at the Hamilton police station, a veterinarian clinic and Animates Pet Store to ask directions. The staff at Animates checked their database and found a phone number for the Emmett’s. And a short time later, Bill was on his way to the Emmett’s property to deliver his trailer-load of livestock feed and supplies.

When Bill arrived at Little Acres Farm, the Emmett’s saw his trailer covered in black plastic with rolls of recycled chain link fencing on top.

“When he lifted the cover and told us the whole trailer was full of barley and it was all for the animals here we were speechless,” said Jacqui.

“Then he said we could have the fencing he threw on in case we could make use of it — again we were totally shocked and surprised.

“In our wildest dreams nobody would

by Denise Gunn

do this, not this amount and at their own expense.”

The arrival of the barley was timely with the Waikato officially declared a drought zone.

Just the day before Bill turned up, Jacqui had arranged the purchase of several bales of hay and travelled 100kms to pick them up, only to be told on arrival that it had been sold to a farmer the day before.

“We had wasted time and money on the trip only to be let down with no idea that our hay had been sold,” said Jacqui.

“We were pretty disgusted by this behaviour during the ‘big dry’ crisis.”

The Emmett’s faith in human

nature was soon restored thanks to Bill’s efforts.

“Now, the very next day here was a total stranger who had gone out of his way to donate feed for our rescue animals after reading the article.”

The following day, Bill made another 200km trip to deliver a second load of grain to Little Acres Farm.

Jacqui said his donation will make a huge difference to their struggles to feed and maintain the rescue animals during the crisis with very little grazing.

“What a kind and amazing man.

“He’s a national treasure.”

Opening its doors in 1914, the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd, near Morrinsville, is set to celebrate their centennial next year and the theme of survival and sustainability and innovation runs deep through the small independent company over the years.

It has weathered two world wars, a great depression and recessions and chairman of directors and shareholder Stephen Allen says

that while they are small in size, producing around one percent of New Zealand’s milk production, they continue to grow financially.

“In the past 10 to 15 years it shows that our turnover has grown three fold as have our staff.”

Stephen’s great, great uncle, a Morrinsville solicitor, drew up the co-operative’s original deed of incorporation. Having learnt the history from a young age, Stephen identifies the great wars and innovation into long life milk products as being poignant moments.

“Surviving the world wars when men were in

short supply is a great achievement for Tatua. Farm work was very physical and labour intensive, it wasn’t as easy as it is now when we have machines and technology to help us out.”

The commodity of milk, perishable by nature, was seen as a luxury and something people could put on hold.

“Many farmers who weren’t enlisted in the army turned to sheep farming because wool was needed for soldier’s uniforms and for blankets,” adds Stephen.

Milk suppliers are located within a 12km radius of the manufacturing facilities which has limited the volume of milk production meaning growth needed to come from innovation.

Taste testing Tatua’s whipped creamFilling up the new tanker

Tatua’s factory near Morrinsville

During the 70s and 80s the company began developing long life milk products and their most recognised is whipped cream in a can along with a variety of creams including crème fraiche, mascarpone and sour cream.

“We realised that if we wanted to stay in business then we need to specialise and be innovative.”

Tatua export 94 percent of their products overseas however looking up the dairy aisle of the supermarket and seeing their branding plastered over products the 6 percent which stays in New Zealand seems to be enough.

Stephen identifies the family feeling within the co-operative as the core of its success through the years.

“There have been a number of families that have been involved from the beginning and it gives it a real sense of belonging.”

“Everyone in the company has a belief that we can be successful and when you compare a small business to a large business, it’s easier to get that team sprit going when you’re smaller. There is a genuine feeling that we can do it, sustain it and make it commercially successful.”

Now in the co-operative are 109 shareholders and on the board of directors, there are six elected shareholders and two

independent directors appointed for their breath of knowledge outside of farming.

Stephen says the company isn’t afraid of growth and developing specialised milk products is both technology and people intensive creating jobs in Morrinsville.

While some areas of the farming industry are struggling to fill positions, Tatua has more than enough CVs when they post a vacancy.

“When we began a new food plant we required 30 staff and we had a huge amount of interest. The other thing is that we don’t have a high staff turnover and people seem to really enjoy it.”

To mark their 100th year in business, the company have commissioned author Dr Ian Hunter to write a book on the company focusing on the people who created it and their stories, contribution both as individuals and collectively.

A drop of Waikato River water once took six days to travel from Taupo to the sea at Port Waikato, passing through eight hydro dams and myriad water takes en route. The journey now takes a month, and Waikato Regional Council hydrologist, Dr Ed Brown, estimates every drop is used at least seven times.

“Waikato is both blessed and challenged by the management of a river that is of enormous economic importance to New Zealand. It supplies a quarter of our electricity and is utilised by two of our largest cities.”

A raft of freshwater initiatives in the Waikato region is planned to come on stream over the next few years with major payoffs downriver. Regional authorities, iwi, industry, farmers and communities are working together as partners and stakeholders to reflect a more integrated and catchment-driven approach to freshwater management, spearheaded by 2011’s National Policy Statement for Freshwater.

The policy statement set out national expectations for governing water allocation and managing water quality, informed by recommendations by the Land and Water Forum — a

its two major rivers, the Waikato and the Waipa. Although ‘point source’ discharges — from sewage, factory, and effluent pond — have reduced since the 1950s, rises in nutrient, sediment and E. coli bacteria levels are due primarily to agricultural intensification.

A start to whole-of-catchment management has been made by last year’s launch by the WRC of a regional plan change process — ‘Healthy Rivers — Plan for Change’– to protect and restore the health of these important waterways.

Partners are the five iwi affiliated to the Waikato and Waipa Rivers, and a key stakeholder is the Waikato River Authority, a statutory management body representing iwi and Crown, which is making up to $7m available this year for water clean-up projects.

Authority spokesperson Philip Burton says that the concept of co-funding is key to the restoration and protection of New Zealand’s longest river. “We can’t do the job that’s required on our own — we need partners and collaborators, especially for the larger projects.”

WRC recently signed off on new water allocation rules that not only regulate water taken for dairy shed wash-down but also tie in responsibility for catchments by requiring farmers to fence and plant the water source they utilise, wherever it crosses their land.

Dr Brown says that legalising wash-down takes better enables the council to look at the

limits, how can we work within them?’, rather than not wanting any limits at all.”

Signalling industry commitment to sustainable farming practice is the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord between industry body DairyNZ and New Zealand dairy factories, to be implemented this year. Among its regulations is the exclusion of all dairy cattle from significant wetlands by 2014 and from significant waterways by 2017.

In the Waikato, DairyNZ has come to the collaborative party with joint ventures such as the DairyNZ/WRC Effluent Expo at Mystery Creek on March 26, and a giant good-practice project in the upper Waikato/Karapiro catchment — ‘Healthy Farms/Healthy Rivers’, co-funded with the Waikato River Authority. Offering free advice and support to every dairy farmer in the catchment, it aims to utilise

‘collective farmer action’ to reduce nutrient and sediment loads in the Waikato River and improve water use efficiency.

Alongside government, iwi and industry players are independents National Wetland Trust, currently developing a National Wetland Centre at Ohaupo with assistance from WRC and the WRA, and NZ Landcare Trust, which has its national office in Hamilton and has been promoting a sustainable approach to land and water management since 1996.

Trust spokesperson James Barnett, says catchment initiatives have huge potential. “With the

diversity of land uses and impacts in a single catchment, by its very nature you have to start talking about community, and there’s now a real groundswell of responsibility out there. It’s nice not to be a lone voice anymore!”

The Woods family of Ohaupo has proved the old adage ‘build it, and they will come’. And when people come to Little Valley Farm, they come on horses.

The Little Valley Farm ‘playground’ consists of a semi-enclosed indoor dressage arena, a cross country

course and a show jumping arena, all surrounded by farmland for hunting and hacking, but the four members of the Woods family cheerily admit that originally the facilities were built solely for their own equestrian activities.

However, perhaps that should be equestrienne, as only the female Woods ride.

“My husband Paul is our support person and our groom, but he doesn’t ride. If I had one wish it would be for him to ride with us,” says Natalie Woods. “I did buy him a horse trek once, and as you can’t return a present he just had to do

it. He paid me back with a ticket for motocross, but I did better on the bike than he did on the horse. I have a very heavy foot!”

Originally the Woods were dairy farmers.

“Then nine years ago, Paul came home and said, ‘I don’t want to milk cows anymore’. We looked back at our own upbringing on the land — the good bits and the bad bits — and realised we wanted to offer our children a lot more of our time. But we still had to make a living, so we leased 150 acres to a neighbour and advertised for agisters for the remaining fifty.”

(Agister is the old term for someone paid to allow another’s animals to graze on their land, but now commonly used for horses stabled elsewhere for money.)

After the Woods stopped milking, Natalie bought a horse and started riding for the first time. Soon after, daughter Jessica joined her, followed eventually by Mikayla.

“I had to choose between motocross or horses,” Mikayla, now 18, says. “Dad or Mum. Mum won.”

All three Woods women got into competitive riding, often competing against each other. “The girls have long left me behind,” says Natalie. “But that’s how the sand arena first came about — we needed it for working with the horses. And then we wanted to jump.”

With his trio of equestriennes demanding more space, Paul obligingly got in a digger and built a bank complex for jumping.

“By the time we decided to go all out and build the cross country course we had more and more people riding here, so we hired professional course

designer Robbie MacLean,” Natalie says. “And then we found that the dressage people tended to be intolerant of the show jumping people, and everyone was suggesting that we build an indoor

arena, so we thought, why not?”

“We definitely did not go into this as a full blown business venture — you could even say we went in with our eyes closed!

We were just green riders who wanted somewhere to ride, and we soon realised that other people had the same problem. Initially we thought we’d be lucky to get two people in a week, but it’s just grown and grown. And we get to ride all we want.”

Mikayla, who is studying for a Bachelor of Environmental Planning at Waikato University and Flagged water jump at Little Valley Farm

also runs the office for the business, is currently training hard to qualify for the under 21 New Zealand dressage squad. Jessica and her horse, Too Predictable, are aiming for a world ranking in show jumping, and both sisters have an eventual Olympic qualification in their sights.

Natalie thinks Little Valley Farm is probably the only privately owned riding venue of its kind in New Zealand. But although their indoor arena is of professional international show jumping standard and they regularly host clinics tutored by top national and international trainers, the Woods maintain an open door policy and welcome all horse lovers, from pony clubs on up.

“We cater for everyone, from people who have never ridden before to Mark Todd. The entire facility is available for hire by the public and we just love to see them.”

RBS Invest – A new approach to farm ownershipAn alternative pathway to farm ownership brings strong opportunities for both investors and participating farmers looking to build equity and advance through the industry.

Rural Business Solutions (RBS), a Cambridge based farm advisory rm has recently launched its investment platform RBS Invest, initially targeting dairy farm investment.

The extensive banking, farming and advisory experience of RBS partners meant they have identi ed signi cant issues within the farming sector around farm succession and advancement in the industry.

Those issues demand greater opportunity for investors and farmers to participate without all parties being encumbered by signi cant debt levels.

RBS consultant Paul Schuler said sharemilking positions, the usual pathway to build equity and ultimately achieve farm ownership were in decline.

The response from those wanting to advance through the dairy industry was

to move from lower order contracting positions to equity investors and managers on multi-party syndicated farms.

This had however created a bottleneck for progression of those farmers who often found it dif cult to move forward or exit such arrangements.

The RBS model involves a group of investors sharing ownership of the dairy

farm land through a minimum investment of $250,000, and no debt being held over that land.

The assets of the land owning company are held separately from the stock, share and plant assets the farm’s operator owns.

The farm operator leases the land from the land company, rather than having a share across the entire assets of the operation, and the higher debt level that usually brings.

The cash return for the investors in the land company is the lease paid by the farm operator. This typically equates to a cash return of 4-5%, paid monthly.

The simple model recognises the farm operator’s desire to progress to farm ownership by having a 10-year time frame for the investment project.

Over this time the farm operator will progressively buy more of the farm land from the original ‘founding’ investors in the farm land.

The company’s own budget modelling indicates it would be achievable for an operator with around 20% equity share across the entire farm business to achieve sole ownership within that 10-year period.

Schuler says interest has been strong from motivated young farmers wanting to advance down a clearer pathway to farm ownership.

The Rural Business Solutions team (from left) — Rob Macnab, Dave Kilbride, Kerry Bryant, Paul Schuler and Duncan Coull.

hooves? It only makes hoof trimming a harder job.

Foot baths should only be used as a disinfectant for things like footrot and Digital Dermatitis. Many of you may not know what Digital Dermatitis is — that is why I have included this photo with this article. Digital Dermatitis is an infectious disease in the skin above

Hoof PrintWith Fred Hoekstra

Scientific trials haven’t shown any evidence of that. There is no proof that hard hooves minimise lameness. If you believe that lameness is caused by physical forces then you should be very surprised. Consider this, our soldiers in the army wear proper army boots rather than sneakers. The army boots can handle the rough landscape much better than sneakers. If you harden up the hooves then they accordingly should be a lot more hard wearing, and therefore be able to cope with their physical environment better resulting in less ‘stone bruising’ and white line disease. But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. How can you explain that?

If you have been reading my articles then you probably know what I am going to say. Our experience is that we can go to a farm where the hooves are really soft and yet there is very little haemorrhage in the hooves. Then we go to farms where the hooves are very hard to the point where it almost feels like we are cutting concrete and yet the hooves display much more haemorrhaging.

How can you explain that from a physical damage point of view? The reason is that it is not physical force that causes the problem. The problem comes from the inside out rather than from the outside in. The live tissue (corium or quick) is unhealthy and this

Are foot baths bene cial?

is where the haemorrhage and defects develop from.

So no matter how hard you make the hooves if the corium is unhealthy you will still end up with lame cows. I would argue that if you have lame cows you are better off to have your cows on soft feet instead. Soft hooves don’t penetrate into the wound the same and therefore are more comfortable for the cow. So why do you want to harden the

the heel bulb of the claw. This is a big problem in Europe and America.

Cows over there are very lame when they have it. Digital Dermatitis has arrived in New Zealand as well. Cows don’t seem to get lame from it like they do overseas but it is very important that we treat cases here because it can turn into a major issue. When you see a case the best thing is to take a photo and email it to us, make it dry with a paper towel and spray it with tetravet. Repeat this treatment in about five days.

It is also a good idea to walk the herd through a foot bath with formalin. In this case it needs to be a bath and not a mat because the liquid needs to get up onto the skin above the claw. A mat can’t do that.

Apart from that you don’t need footbaths or hoof mats. You will have better experience if you use that money to buy a bunch of flowers for your wife!

How many of you use hoof mats or foot baths? What are you trying to achieve with it and how helpful do you find them? You may say that you are trying to harden the feet and find that it is very effective, and I would have to agree that footbaths can make cows feet very hard — especially when you use formalin. But does it minimise lameness?

A natural answer to parasite problems

Blood-sucking insects are more than just an annoying, itchy pest — they carry with them all kinds of nasty diseases which can debilitate and sometimes even endanger life. But sometimes preventing the ravages of eas, ticks and mosquitoes can seem just as pesky as the problem insects themselves!

“Living on a lifestyle block that was an ex deer farm with sandy loam soil brought with it the challenge of keeping ticks off the horses every year, resulting in a myriad of chemicals being applied at an alarming rate. Gloving up and spraying or washing the horses on a very regular basis seemed the only option,” say Karen and Chris, owners of innovative company Equipet +.

“In addition, we had not much success last year in keeping eas and ticks off the dogs. Again chemical applications or pills the only possible solution — until we heard of a business for sale importing natural repellent products manufactured in France by AB7 Veterinary Industries.”

The pair leaped at the chance to help others tackle the problem of parasites naturally. Equipet + are proud to provide a range of products for horses, dogs, cats and people, replacing harsh chemicals entirely. The repellents use a natural substance, so no chemical insecticide is used, and tests have proven that the ef ciency of the active substance is at least equal to the typical chemical insecticides.

It’s the best natural defence against eas, ticks, mosquitoes and other pesky insects. No spraying, washing, or pill popping of chemicals is involved; each animal or person can be protected with a special collar or band, which is easy to put on and simple to replace as necessary.

For horses (who are a bit too big to collar!) Equipet + stock a roll on repellent which can be used in hard to reach places.

Karen and Chris will be exhibiting their range of products at this year’s Field Days — but vets and pet stores across New Zealand have already caught on to their chemical-free solution.

The way to maximise responses in winter is to minimise the energy the plant needs to expend to get fertiliser N into the plant, and in a form it can turn into protein as easily as possible. Plants, and this includes pasture plants, can take up urea directly through the leaves, provided it is in liquid or solution form. The application rate must not be excessively high as this can cause leaf burn as the leaf surface dries out during the day. It is very important to include a urease inhibitor — otherwise urease enzyme on the plant leaves can result in much of the urea being converted to ammonia gas and lost to the atmosphere.

Once inside the plant, urea can be processed into ammonium-N and then amino acids — the building block of protein — with less energy consumption by the plant than pulling nitrate-N up through the roots and then reducing the nitrate to ammonium-N.

Getting grass faster in winterby Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

Up to 40kg of additional DM can be produced with each kg of N applied in this way. This much higher efficiency gives several advantages, including lower costs per additional kg of DM, greatly reduced losses to the environment, and the ability to add in trace elements and sulphur (S), gibberellic acid (GA3), pasture weed sprays and so on.

When GA3 is applied by itself, the potential response is often limited because the plant roots can not take up the extra N and S needed to build the DM that the GA3 is ‘instructing’ it to do.

Applying N, along with S and trace elements if needed, with the GA3 fixes that.

As soil temperatures and sunlight hours drop, plants have less energy for growth. We can boost growth with fertiliser N, but plants struggle to turn the N into growth. For example, in the warmer seasons, a kg of N as granular urea will produce 10-20 kg of additional dry matter. In winter this drops to as low as 4-8 kg, which is often uneconomic

The sport of hunting game birds in New Zealand had its origins in the salt marshes of England.

“There, in years past, huge numbers of migratory waterfowl provided excellent shooting, says Simon, the owner of Simon Dickie Shooting which offers fully hosted game bird excursions.

“New Zealand settlers brought these traditions to this country when they settled the land, importing and releasing ducks, pheasants and quail.

However as land development has encroached on natural habitat, hunting opportunities for wild birds have diminished. Fish and Game NZ has created the same opportunity here as in the UK with licenced game

reserves now offering spectacular pheasant shooting equal to the best in the world.”

The largest of these special licence areas is in the South Waikato where Simon Dickie Shooting offer a full service shooting destination in rolling countryside.

“In many regions the season for mallards is now limited,” adds Simon. However you can hunt pheasants for four months and an increasing number of hunters are now enjoying walked-up pheasant shooting over well trained dogs.

The shoot is based north of Taupo and now offers a clay target range, open daily with an onsite pro shop.

From deer hunting to trout or snapper shing, Surf and Turf has it all. It’s a family-owned business, providing hunting and shing experiences on the Waikato’s west coast.

“All activities are hands-on and all gear is supplied by us,” says Rob Fitzgerald, who owns the business with his wife, Jacqui.

“Fishing trips include scenic icons such as Marokopa Falls, Mangapohue natural bridge and, weather permitting, views of the central plateau mountains.

You may go on a hunting trip with Rob for red or fallow deer, or trout  shing.

“A typical day out might start with scenic sights, followed by morning tea and then Kontiki shing from the beach with lunch provided. Return home to the freshly prepared and cooked catch of the day or have your sh cleaned and lleted for you to prepare yourself.”

Surf and Turf also offers rabbit or possum hunting.

“We do pick up and drop offs from Waitomo Caves, Otorohanga or Te Awamutu. There is also accommodation situated here on our dairy farm. Now’s the time to book with us with the stags getting ready for the roar, and the snapper in close feeding up for the winter.”

Step forward to raise funds for road safety charity

The Step Forward fundraiser, organised by international road safety charity Brake, will run all this year to remember road

accident victims, their families and friends. The fundraiser will also help raise funds for

support services for those families.

The Step Forward fundraiser has been organised by international road safety charity, Brake. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1995 and formed in New Zealand in 2010, Brake has two key aims: preventing road deaths and injuries, and caring for people who have been bereaved or seriously injured in a crash.

Last year, 307 people died on New Zealand roads.

Brake New Zealand spokesperson Carolyn Perry, said that’s 307 families who found out the devastating news that their loved one would not be coming home.

“Many more families, friends and communities will have been affected by someone they care about being killed or seriously injured in a crash.”

An opportunity to remember road accident victims, their families and friends, and help to raise funds for support services for those families will run all this year.

The Step Forward campaign asks people to set themselves a sporting challenge that relates to the number 307, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on New Zealand roads in 2012.

“Everyone can take part — adults and children, individuals and groups, and there are lots of ways to challenge yourself,” said Miss Perry.

Some suggestions include: — swimming 307 lengths of a swimming pool with sponsorship for each length swum — jog, or work out in the gym, for 307 minutes (five hours) with sponsorship for every minute — hold a 307 minute cricket, rugby or soccer game with sponsorship for every minute played or point scored — cycle 307km over a week or a month, with sponsorship for every kilometre.

Miss Perry said taking part in the fundraiser is easy.

“Firstly, you need to decide what

challenge you’re going to set yourself, whether to do it on your own or as a group, and when to do it.

“Once you know what you’ll be doing, contact Brake on [email protected] or 021 407 953 with all the details and your fundraising target, and we’ll send you a sponsorship form and hints and tips for organising and fundraising for your challenge.”

The funds raised from the Step Forward campaign will go towards Brake’s work supporting people affected by road accidents and to prevent deaths and injuries on roads.

“Our work is not-for-profit and we rely on fundraising, donations and sponsorship to continue our work and keep our support resources free of charge to families” said Miss Perry.

Step Forward is a new fundraiser for Brake New Zealand. A similar challenge has been held in  theUnited Kingdom.

Visit www.brake.org.nz/stepforward for more details and some tips on fundraising.

...Machinery for a better life!agrilife

In an environment where the consumer is swamped with different mowers to choose from, some good, some bad, some really bad, and some just unknown, it can be a mine field to decipher what is the correct option to go with, and which is going to give the best reliability and service.

In the seven years Agrilife has been in operation, the team there have become market leaders in the game by hand picking and supporting brands that are not only internationally recognised, but have proven there worth in our tough Waikato conditions.

The problem being, as we all know, is that if you want quality then you are generally going to pay more for it!.

Well that’s not the case with the latest offering from the Hustler stable!

And that is why Richard Kibby, Agrilife Managing Director, really wants everyone to take a look at what Hustler has now brought to the table, by introducing the all new Raptor series zero-turn mower. “My team has fully appraised this new mower, and we are all of the same opinion, It’s awsome!”, said Richard.

Hustler Turf is a large USA-based company that focusses solely on building the best zero-turn mowers in the world! Back

in 1964 they invented the first zero turn mower and since then they have concentrated on building quality products. Today all

they make is zero turn mowers and produce in excess of 35,000 mowers a year.

Hustler is unique in the zero-turn mower market in that they started at the large end of the range and worked down. This philosophy has meant that their mowers in the residential end of the range boast features normally only seen in commercial machines, if at all.

A pair of rural VIP’s, on their way home from performing at the Hawera A and P Show, called into Otorohanga Agri Machinery 2011 Ltd recently.

Lynda and Julie, The Topp Twins, happened to talk to a local dealer at the show about Mahindra tractors and were interested and very impressed with the machine’s simplicity of operation and hydraulic power.

“When they arrived in Otorohanga they noticed the Mahindra sign on our

building and saw the smaller Mahindra tractor in the show room on display,” said business owner, Norman.

“When they walked in we knew who they were. Julie was looking to replace her tractor as hers was on its last legs, so to speak, and she knew exactly what she wanted. This was the right size, horse power, wide bucket , good hydraulic power. Julie and Lynda then walked out of the shop, saying they needed the approval of their co-pilot —

their dog, White Feather! Then it was a done deal.”

“The 3316 model is being used for mowing, loading hay and grading

tracks and Julie says she’s very pleased.”Mahindra Tractors in the smaller

range are manufactured in Japan, powered with Mitsubishi engines.

SinusitisSinusitis just refers to in ammation

of the sinus membranes. Usually the in ammation is caused by an infection like the cold virus, other times the in ammation is a response to an allergen or a faulty immune system response. Regardless of the cause, in most cases chronic sinusitis is an indication of a poorly functioning immune system. The target of therapy is topical, trying to sterilise the nasal passages, and then to target the immune system chaos.

Our respiratory tract from our nose to our lungs is lined with special tissue called respiratory epithelium. The role of this mucus secreting membrane is to help protect us from airborne germs and allergens and then to act as our internal air conditioning system to lter air, to control humidity, regulate temperature and to protect our vulnerable lungs.

When working well it is a brilliant piece of design effectively linking and regulating the outside world from our sensitive internal tissues and organs. However when it malfunctions it causes all sorts of misery. Last week I commented that I had 15 years of lower respiratory problems. During this period I also lived with chronic sinusitis which brings the joy of a sinus headache and regular infections.

Fortunately these are no longer part of my life.

This is one group of problems that can respond really well to nutritional therapy. Nutritional medicine practitioner Robert Iker recommends developing a systematic programme for chronic sinusitis. This includes practising nasal hygiene with steaming and irrigating, having a healthy anti-in ammatory diet and taking antioxidant and anti-in ammatory supplements.

My advice is similar but I like to add colloidal silver as a nasal spray to help keep nasal passages sterile. To this I add a cocktail of antioxidants based on OPC’s (grape seed extract) vitamin C, bio avonoids, trace minerals and many more. For adults my base supplements are up to 8000mg of sh oils and a comprehensive multi antioxidant/mineral plus another 200mg of pure OPC, 2000mg of vitamin C and 500mg of mixed bio avonoids. If low vitamin D levels are suspected or con rmed, we also add vitamin D, often with an intensive period then a lower maintenance level. This seems to help reduce mucous membrane in ammation, mucous secretion and help to reduce susceptibility of infections. Call me if you need help or more information.

Bay Audiology provides better hearing solutions to ACC funding changes.

• Do people seem to mumble when talking?

• Do you find it tricky followingconversations?

• Do you turn the TV up louder than other peopledo?

• Do family members have to repeatthemselves when talking to you?

• Do you have trouble hearing people on the phone?

• Do you find men’s voices easier tounderstand than women’s?

• Do people say you talk too loud?

• Have you noticed ringing in your ears?If you answered ‘YES’ to two or more questions you would benefit from FREE hearing check at Bay Audiology.

QUICK HEARING CHECK

Have you ever worked in a noisy environment or been exposed to high noise levels? Perhaps you contributed to the growth and development of our economy through industries like farming, forestry or manufacturing. Many New Zealanders who worked in such industries throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s did not have access to adequate hearing protection. As a result there are thousands of New Zealanders living with significant noise induced hearing loss.

The damage caused to your hearing by noise is irreversible and permanent. For those affected this is a disability that will not go away. Unfortunately, the compensation and ongoing support has been dramatically reduced with the 2010 changes introduced by ACC. These changes mean that ACC no longer cover the full cost of hearing aids, hearing aid repairs, and ongoing assessments. Effectively, as those with Noise Induced Hearing Loss get older, they will need to pay more for the rehabilitation they had previously trusted ACC to provide.

ACC funding is now structured into funding levels, with the amount you qualify for depending on the level of hearing loss that an independent Ear Nose and Throat specialist determines is caused by noise or an accident.

Sadly, even the highest level of funding available may fall well below the cost of the hearing aids required to meet a persons individual hearing needs. The impact of the ACC funding changes means that some people simply cannot afford to ‘top up’ the funded amount to purchase the level of technology they need.

People with untreated hearing loss can experience feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression and reduced job performance. However research shows that hearing aids can help improve the confidence and self esteem of those who wear them, and lead to improved family relationships.

Understanding the importance of hearing loss rehabilitation, Bay Audiology is committed to developing a better solution.

At Bay Audiology, regardless of what funding level a client qualifies for, there will be a

hearing aid solution that is fully covered by their ACC funding with no cost to the client.

As a direct result, Bay Audiology has been able to help even more people who would otherwise not have been able to afford hearing aids.

For those with more complex listening needs, or who would

benefit from a greater technology level than the fully funded pair provides, this pricing structure means that they can now afford to invest in an upgrade to a hearing aid model that gives them a more natural listening experience, and allows them to enjoy a wider variety of listening situations.

Hearing aid technology has improved exponentially in recent years, and amazing results can be achieved with the latest models, so this is a huge advantage for Bay Audiologyclients.

ACC funding is available every six years. That means if you have hearing aids that were

funded over six years ago by ACC, you can visit a Bay Audiology clinic to start the

process to apply for new ones.

At Bay Audiology we work hard to ensure that everyone is given the right solution for their hearing needs, lifestyle and budget. In addition to administering government subsidies, we have the option of interest free payment plans, and other solutions to suit all budgets.

For information and guidance about your options, talk to your local Bay Audiology clinic. Simply phone 0800 800 854 to book your FREE appointment.

Bay Audiology is New Zealand’s largest private audiology provider. Our nationwide network of support means that you can trust us to be here for you every step of the way, no matter where you are or when in the future you need us.

With the same features; no submerged bearings, non-clogging impeller and impeccable reliability, but up to 40% more efficient.

Yardmaster products are designed to work well for years with minimal maintenance.

Kiwi pumps working hard on Kiwi farms — and beyond

Pumping slurry — whether it’s dairy ef uent, or any other mixture of liquids and solids — is very different from pumping water alone. It’s a lesson learned more than 50 years ago by Reid and Harrison of Matamata, and one which they have

applied to successive generations of their tough, reliable Yardmaster pumps.

With a specialist focus, and a strong relationship with the rural sector, Reid and Harrison’s Yardmasters boast a bulletproof track record dealing with

while retaining the ability to pass up to 16mm solids.

The entire Yardmaster range is being expanded at the same time, with traditional vertical pumps now augmented by the addition of end suction horizontal and self priming horizontal pumps. This means that along with their full range of pontoons, hoses and other ttings, the team at Reid and Harrison now have more ‘ammunition’ in their repertoire when designing a modern, ef cient ef uent system for your farm. Visit them at the forthcoming Ef uent Expo, or call them to talk about your options — after all, with 50 years of Kiwi-made experience behind them, Reid and Harrison know ef uent pumping like nobody else!

some very messy substances indeed. From meatworks to sawmills, and of course out on the farm, their range of pumps have provided ve decades of service to core industries. This has also rendered ve decades of customer feedback, research and evolution, leading up to the arrival this year of a brand new kind of Yardmaster pump.

It’s a timely addition to the range, and a pump that’s perfect for farmers tackling new ef uent regulations with better technology. With six months of intensive eld testing completed, the new Yardmaster has proven itself 40% more ef cient than its predecessors, and now has the option of up to three impellers,

Success comes from clean and green simplicity

The Clean Green process begins by ltering out the solids through a patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash. Fresh ‘green water’ is recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall.

Thus dairy yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water — a big saving, especially during dry summers! This reduces total fresh water consumption to a low 20 litres per cow, per day — a saving on average of 30 litres.

The Clean Green Ef uent System has a unique distribution system that was designed with new ef uent spreading regulations in mind. It supports a super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼ mm), and can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems.

The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at eld capacity. That means far less necessity for storage — a big issue under recent changes to ef uent guidelines across New Zealand.

The Clean Green Ef uent System uses two 33,000 litre water tanks for total storage, and the removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and

reduces the overall quantity of farm dairy ef uent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can mean that millions of litres of liquid must be dispersed each year — sometimes more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed!

The patented distribution system is fully automated so it only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem-free ef uent system. Come and see for yourself the difference a Clean Green system can make — they will be on display at Site 33 at the Waikato Ef uent Expo.

A ‘down to earth’ approach that aims to save farmers money while still protecting the environment has led to great success for Kiwi company, Clean Green Ef uent Systems. Using tried and tested technology with a minimum of moving parts, the ef uent innovators promise a solution which is totally automated, and which provides a nished product suitable for use as a fertiliser across all soil types.

Better management for precious rural resources

The rural industry, like every industry in the modern New Zealand economy, relies on the ef cient use of resources to succeed. While other trades use concrete, electricity and steel, one of the most important resources for farmers is water — but to use it effectively, those in agri-business have to have accurate data at their  ngertips.

That’s where Number 8 Systems come in

— a local company with a name based in the ‘do anything’ attitude of the Kiwi farmer, and a level of technology that’s light years ahead of tape, twine and baling wire. Company owners Andrew Llewelyn and Ade Kloeten started the business in 2007 to develop an effective water pump monitor system, and from day one all of their products have been tested on Kiwi farms.

From this initial device — the Pump Guru, an electronic monitor which protects pumps, detects leaks and faults and sends detailed information wirelessly to the farmer — the Number 8 repertoire has grown to encompass some of the smartest hardware found on farms. From tank levels to the logging of bore water usage, and from monitoring of silo feed levels to wirelessly controlling systems across the farm, Number 8 do it all. They can even help you track the input of rainwater to tanks!

Data from a vast array of devices is displayed via the internet for Number 8 Systems’ customers, with support for tablets and Smartphone’s. And for those out of 3g coverage, ‘bulletproof’ SMS text message support is also available.

In the modern farming environment it’s more important than ever to know just how much water (and other resources) you are using. By adding tried and tested monitoring devices it’s possible to isolate faults and increase ef ciency. For example, the Pump Guru is able to detect a leak the size of a pinprick, potentially saving thousands of litres of water.

With the necessity of recording bore water ow for resource consent, many farmers are considering digital monitoring and control for their operations. There’s no better time to talk to Number 8 Systems about a big-picture approach across the whole farm — they can even visit you to formulate the perfect plan and revolutionise your ef ciency for the future.

Andrew Llewelyn and a PumpGuru installed on a life style block in Patumahoe.

FREE ONSITE WATER ASSESSMENT• Do you have an existing filtration system?• Are you happy with its performance?• Is it providing you with the best results?• Have you got water quality concerns?• Or do you require guidance on the best

treatment options?

Experience tells for water systemsWith drought now with us, ef cient

water reticulation is paramount. With over 50 years experience and a massive range of ttings and valves, the Hansen range of products has become synonymous with quality and reliability for Kiwi lifestylers and farmers.

“We are continually geared towards listening to the needs of end users,” says Director of Sales and Marketing, Steve Sharpe.

“This has allowed for an evolution of new, exciting and dynamic products that provide solutions for both small scale lifestyle setups right the way through to large scale heavily planned systems — and always embedded with a strong sense of what will bene t the end user. Hansen’s range of solutions is comprehensive and can be trusted.”

Hansen’s newest innovation is the Leveler valve. Designed to reduce wear and tear on pumps and systems as a whole, the ‘dual level’ valve is installed inside the tank and operates in such a way that the pump only switches on when the tank level is low, then switches off as soon as it’s re lled again thus reducing pump ‘cycling’.

“Hansen has built a solid reputation for quality and none more so than the 30 years proven success of the Easy Fit Pipe ttings range.” adds Mr Sharpe.

“Perfectly suited to Low Density Poly Pipe, Marley Enduro Flex and a range

of thin wall irrigation, rubber and suction hose, this is the range to use for connecting your pipe to get the water moving around your property. They’re super easy to install, proven to stand up to New Zealand’s harshest weather conditions and with a massive range in sizes 15 to 50mm, there’s one for every situation.”

He said certain critical points in water systems need ow control and isolating.

“So the Hansen Ball Valve and Check Valve is hand tested using both air and water before leaving the factory. The full ow Ball Valve’s smooth open and close action reduces system ‘water hammer’ and allows for easy, reliable start/stop ow control within your system. Add to that the easy access Check Valve (commonly called a non-return valve) and you have a system that ensures your water ows only in the direction you intend it to.

“Hansen’s high performance Super o Trough Valves and Max o Trough/Tank Valves provide the ideal solution for ensuring stock get the water they need with high volume ows. The Super o’s unique Slipper Fit piston design helps prevent ‘stuck valve syndrome’, resulting in no more over owing or empty troughs. The soft close of the Max o eliminates water hammer in either clean or dirty water applications

Genomic Selection holds huge promise of faster value gains from genetic improvement of commercial tree species

The Radiata Pine Breeding Company Ltd. (RPBC) is a New Zealand company focussed on the provision of superior radiata pine germplasm to its shareholders and customers in Australasia. RPBC is embarking a development programme which can halve the traditional 25-30 year breeding and deployment cycle. The economic impact is huge as the rate of improvement in key traits, eg growth and wood quality, is doubled.

Genomic Selection is the key technology to enable this development. Genomic Selection is bringing changes to animal and plant breeding because it:

• speeds the breeding and deployment cycle by reducing the need for progeny tests

• allows the selection and evaluation of multiple traits simultaneously

• reduces cost and time for assessing traits that are difficult or expensive to measure

• allows the quick introduction of new traits such as disease resistance

• establishes a platform for introduction of other molecular technologies

The major overall gain arising from genomic selection is that genetically improved planting stock is deployed more rapidly in commercial forests. Unlike GE, there are no regulatory barriers to uptake.

What is Genomic Selection?Traditionally, breeding values are

calculated by observing and measuring the expressed trait in the subject tree as it is growing (phenotypic data). It can take some years before such traits can be observed or measured

for. Genomic Selection, on the other hand (and this is where it can get pretty technical), involves identifying patterns of molecular markers along strands of DNA, the genetic blueprint, of trees being tested. These patterns are compared to those of a pedigree of genotypes with known phenotypic data (called a training population).

This allows individuals with good genetic matches to desired traits/phenotypes to be identified. Such diagnostics can be done in the nursery when the plant is less than one year old. By contrast, to generate phenotypic data using traditional methods the plant would normally be grown to six — eight years old.

RPBC considers that Genomic Selection is sufficiently well developed and commercially proven in many plant and animal applications to be implemented in the NZ radiata pine industry.

In addition, there is a small window within which the chance of obtaining government funding is high, after which the chance of funding will be seriously diminished as new processes and priorities are introduced. Work already underway, funded mainly by Scion with some RPBC assistance, has built a robust R&D programme and created a network of international technical experts to help guide the programme.

Publishers of Kaipara Lifestyler, Northland Farming Lifestyles, Waikato Farming lifestyles, Taranaki/Manawatu Farming Lifestyles, and Canterbury Farming.

Ten years ago the average dairy farm, during the height of the milking season, spent under $1000 per month for power. These days we are paying over twice that and it’s unlikely to get any better. As energy costs have steadily increased in New Zealand way beyond the global average and we believe this is having a serious detrimental effect on the growth and productivity of our economy.

And, it’s not just farmers, most people believe that electricity prices are too high. They find it difficult to understand why the costs have escalated well above the rate of inflation since about 2002 when the government introduced the market led model.

Despite obvious evidence of  profitgauging and poor capital reinvestment politicians have steadfastly defended the current structure.

Electricity is as vital to our economy as our roads and water resources. The cost of not having supply is huge. Ask

Bill Guest, Farmers of New ZealandBe my GuestPowers costs continue

to be far too highthose in the Far North District of New Zealand who have had to put up with a third world electricity supply for years. The network is actually turned off for a day each year for maintenance. Close to the whole district is simply turned off! I wonder if Auckland or Wellington would find this acceptable?

Power should not be managed through an artificial market model. We should simply pay the cost of supply plus what is required to maintain the current asset and build more as it is required.

This “market” system based on selling kWh has serious shortcomings that should be obvious to all. All power generators get paid at the price bid by the highest bidder. Because generators only earn income when they actually generate electricity there is no incentive to build spare generation. The greater the shortage the better the price!

It has been estimated that as a result of the ‘market system’ we have paid more than $4 billion more than we needed to for electricity. The market is

seriously flawed and acts against the interests of the consumer and it’s about to get worse. We are now selling half this monopolistic market system to the private sector that will by its very nature optimise profits for shareholders. As the government talks about the average ‘kiwi mum and dad investors’ getting the opportunity to be a shareholder they are unlikely to be adequately compensated for the exponentially increasing cost of power.

We should not be privatising this commodity because there is simply no alternative or substitute. The market model does not work either effectively or efficiently in such circumstances. If this government was really determined to build and grow our economy to provide good well paid jobs they should not have an energy policy that escalates cost per kWh and reduces any incentive to maintain or build capacity.

Our energy costs used to be one of our global competitive advantages. Due to meddling politicians this is increasingly not the case.
