• Transgender : An “umbrellaterm” for someone whose self -identification, anatomy, appearance,manner, expression, behavior and/orother's perceptions of challengestraditional societal expectations ofcongruent gender expression anddesignated birth sex.

• Cisgender : a term that isbecoming increasingly popular todescribe people who are not trans orgender variant —in other words, thosewhose gender identities,presentations, and behavior “match”(according to the gender binary) thesex they were assigned at birth.

• Intersex : a general term used fora variety of genetic, hormonal, oranatomical conditions in which aperson is born with a reproductive orsexual anatomy that doesn’t fit thetypical definitions of female or male.

• Transsexual : Someone whowants to, intends to, or has begun topursue some physical change to theirbody, in an effort to align the physicalbody with one’s gender identity, andidentifies with this term. This is anidentity that must be claimed as one’sown; it should not be imposed uponpeople.

• Cross-Dressing : A person whoenjoys dressing in clothes typicallyassociated with another gender. Thismay be the extent of the gender-bending behavior, or it may be onestep on a path of changing sex orgender. The term transvestite hasbeen used in the past to describe thisactivity or interest.

• Drag Performers : People whodress and theatrically perform like the“opposite” gender for entertainment,play, expression, or eroticism. Malesare referred to as Drag Queens andfemales are referred to as Drag Kings.

• Genderqueer / 3 rd Gender /Gender Fluid / Two Spirit :These terms are used by people whoidentify as being between and/orother than man or woman. They may

feel they are neither, a little bit ofboth, or they may simply feelrestricted by gender labels. Two spiritis derived from some Native NorthAmerican cultures and can sometimesmean a mixture of masculine and

feminine spirits in the same body.• Androgyny : Person appearing

and identifying as neither man norwoman, presenting a gender eithermixed or neutral.

• Gender Identity : How yousee yourself socially: man, woman, ora combination of both. One may havea penis but prefer to relate socially asa woman, or one may have a vaginabut prefer to relate as a man. Onemight prefer to be fluid, relatingsometimes as a man and sometimesas a woman. Or one might not identifyas either one, relating androgynously.

• Transphobia : The fear,intolerance, or hatred of atypicalgender expression or identity, or ofpeople embodying or expressing anatypical gender identity.

• Harry BenjaminStandards of Care : In 1966,Harry Benjamin created the Standardsof Care as ethical guidelines for thecare and treatment of transsexuals.Benjamin’s guiding principles dictatedthe requirements necessary for aperson to be considered transsexualand to qualify for medical transition,as well as the scope of therapies,treatments and surgeries that atransition would include.

• Medical Model : A clinicalview of gender variance, rooted inbiological and psychologicalorientations, with an understandingthat transsexuality and transgenderidentity are medical and mental health

conditions, in need of diagnosis,treatment, and cure.
