Architectural Study

Located at 1702 Main Street in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, this multi-level unit houses three main floors. Located on the ground level is a law office with open windows and a separate entry. On the second and third floors of this dwelling will be the future home of Robb and Brienne Stark. The façade of this particular unit is in the Romanesque Revival style. This particular style was most popular in America in the late 19th century inspired by 11th and 12th

century Romanesque style of architecture. “Unlike the classical Romanesque style, however, Romanesque Revival buildings tended to feature more simplified arches and windows than their historic counterparts” ( Essential Architecture)

Concept Statement

Light, open and minimal furnishings adorn this space making it a unique mix between the modern world and days from the past. Colors will be of a neutral palette with soft dove greys, warm earthy tones and shades of ivory and white used throughout. This large dual level space will be open and airy, allowing lots of natural light to flow through each room. Elegantly curvilinear forms are used in furniture pieces throughout the space, evoking nature to come inside and be enjoyed by all. Solid and patterns will be mixed throughout the entire space, mostly in fabrics, upholsteries and accessories. Mixing modern elements with Scandinavian furnishings inside, help create a balance between the exterior architecture of the façade and propelling it into the present. Saturated colors of beige and grey absorb the natural light, adding a feeling of warmth and just the right amount of cozy to this space. The spacious floor plan allows up to two guest bedrooms and a master suite, making this layout comfortable for a family to grow into or the perfect space for a home office.

Page 6: W6A1 INTA212 Edward Stangret

Color PaletteWhen choosing a color palette for this particular clients home, the inspiration was a neutral color paletteInfusing darker tones throughout the space. The balance of light versus dark makes for an interesting mix. In typical Scandinavian design, whiteis the primary color used mimicking thesunshine in the long and dark winters.Natural tones of beige are changed in saturation, turning the beige colorinto soft dove grey. This in turn, dramatically changes the mood of the space. In the picture provided, you can see two swatches changed in the space on the flooring and fireplace walls. In the firstpicture ( the original), the feeling isOverall a feeling of warmth and openness. In the second picture ( changed copy),the overall feeling has changed to a muchmore darker and dramatic feeling. This modern twist to typical Scandinavian designcombines the couples unique style into onecohesive theme.

Code Study

8

Page 39: W6A1 INTA212 Edward Stangret

Code StudyDiscuss how sensible the code compliance is related to one of the analysis topics in residential design listed above. (Edward Stangret)

In any new or existing residential space, I believe that building codes are very sensible. They streamline multiple factors that can be miscommunicated such as a local states proper wall height. Another example would be how the IRC requires handrails at stairways with two or more risers ( Kirkpatrick). All the factors outlined in our analysis can show that those particular codes are relevant in an existing structure. Some other codes may not particularly need to be considered, such as, 1203.2 Attic spaces.

Enclosed attics and enclosed rafter spaces formed where ceilings are applied directly to the underside of roof framing members shall have cross ventilation for each separate space by ventilation openings protected against the entrance of rain and snow. Blocking and bridging shall be arranged so as not to interfere with the movement of air. An airspace of not less than 1 inch (25 mm) shall be provided between the insulation and the roof sheathing. The net free ventilating area shall not be less than 1/150th of the area of the space ventilated.

Here, because the residential space we are seeking to re-design does not have a attic space, it is not required for us to consider this code. If our space did indeed have an attic space, then we would have to follow the guidelines outlined by the IBC. It is important to read through all appropriate codes, as some do have exceptions that designers may want to take into consideration. An example of this is 1208.2 Minimum ceiling heights.

Occupiable spaces, habitable spaces and corridors shall have a ceiling height of not less than 7 feet 6 inches (2286 mm). Bathrooms, toilet rooms, kitchens, storage rooms and laundry rooms shall be permitted to have a ceiling height of not less than 7 feet (2134 mm).

Exceptions:

1. In one- and two-family dwellings, beams or girders spaced not less than 4 feet (1219 mm) on center shall be permitted to project not more than 6 inches (152 mm) below the required ceiling height.

2. If any room in a building has a sloped ceiling, the prescribed ceiling height for the room is required in one-half the area thereof. Any portion of the room measuring less than 5 feet (1524 mm) from the finished floor to the ceiling shall not be included in any computation of the minimum area thereof.

3. The height of mezzanines and spaces below mezzanines shall be in accordance with Section 505.1. 9

Page 40: W6A1 INTA212 Edward Stangret

Code Study

Discuss how this information will specifically advance your future application of code factors while designing. Provide at least two examples. (Janay Royster)Researching and applying the code information for residential projects will help advance my future application of code factors while designing by assisting in making sure the spaces are correctly identified, according to their occupancy group, and to successfully identify which sets of codes are the correct ones to use aiding in making functional and safe spaces. Forexample, residential buildings, levels, or spaces under the grouping of R-2 or R-4 (i.e. apartments and rehab centers) are classified as residential, but because the building is responsible for larger groups of occupants, according to code 804.2.2,these building must provide automatic sprinkler systems. This assignment has taught me to look over each space, especially when dealing, with a multi-occupant building, because each spaces may have a different group affiliation and codes to follow to insure each space is properly safe. By identifying the occupancy group, it can help with space planning as well because the designer can chose to place similar occupant groups together or place appropriate fire rated assemblies between the different occupant group spaces to become a mixed occupancy project. As a designer, safety is always a factor that is high on the list, but I have believed that commercial projects had a higher level of safety codes to follow, but after completing this assignment, I can say that yes there is a larger responsibility for commercial spaces because they occupy larger loads of users, but residential projects and spaces are just as important requiring just as much planning as commercial spaces and projects. For example, R-1 occupant (i.e. hotel), the user would not be familiar with the emergency evacuation equipment n place like a fire escape simply because they do not frequent the space regularly. The designer must provide the necessary equipment and materials like sprinklers, if permitted, fire walls, corridors, window glass, and textiles to protectthe users and guide them to safety during an emergency, especially with other distractions and stress in the area, to make iteasy as possible for the user to escape harm. Another key element to consider is whether or not the building is new or existing because each type has specific building requirements. Another advantage of knowing the residential codes is knowing how and where to place electrical outlets. I had trouble in the past by not placing enough electrical outlets in the spaces and when I did, I placed them too far apart. Now I know that “receptacles must be no more than 12 feet apart and no more than 6 feet from a door or entryway”. (The Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online Lecture) Also, all appliance must have itsown separate outlet of operation close by. Also, if the wall is more than 2 feet long, it must have receptacles as well.

Code Study

Select a topic from the ones listed above and discuss why you feel the surrounding factors demanded code compliance.

Fire and life safety codes are some of the most important codes for protecting lives. In the US alone, many fires throughout history have impacted our views on fire safety. Many fires throughout the world play major rolls in the IBC codes as well.

One of the earliest know fires was located in Rome in 64 AD. As a result the first fire codes were set in place, widening streets and restricting the height of buildings (History of Fire Codes). The first American Building codes were established in 1631, by Governor John Winthrop, banning the use of wooden roofs and chimneys of homes which was a leading cause for house fires (History of Fire Codes). The first concern for sprinkler systems was a result of the Great Fire of London in 1666, recorded of killing only 6 people, however over 13,200 homes were destroyed in the fire. It wasn’t until 1812 before the first non-automatic sprinkler system was established and in 1872 Phillip W. Pratt created the first automatic system (History of Fire Codes). Just before automatic sprinkler systems were invented there were three more major fires in America, the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the Great Peshtigo Fire, also called “The Forgotten Fire in 1871, and the Great Boston Fire in 1872. Each of these fires fueled new codes for building compliance such as spacing of buildings, construction materials, and the establishment of building construction inspections (History of Fire Codes). The Chicago-Iroquois Theater Fire, has been recorded as the largest fire in a single building, as well as the largest fire within a theater. This fire resulted in an array of new codes both federal and state. Some of the codes that were introduced as a result are exit doors swinging outward, exit signs and wayfinding to help ease panic, exit pathways, and the use of a panic bar to make it easier to exit out of a door (History of Fire Codes).

These are just a few examples of why Fire and Safety codes are as stringent as they are. Many, if not all, of the codes were set in place as a result of tragic loss of life. They were established in the hopes of protective lives and buildings from disastrous fires and preventing the spread of fires.

Study Model JustificationWHAT ELEMENTS CAN BE MODIFIED TO ACHIEVE BETTER SYMMETRICAL OR ASYMMETRICAL BALANCE?I FEEL THAT MANY ELEMENTS CAN BE MODFIED SUCH AS THE WINDOWS. I CAN ADD VISUAL INTEREST BY ARCHING THE TOP PORTION OF THE CASEMENT. I CAN ALSO MODIFY THE FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT, MOVING THE CHAIRS AND BED AROUND TO ACHIEVE A MORE SYMMETRICALLY BALANCED ROOM. THE CHAIR CAN SIT ACROSS FROM ANOTHER WHILE THE BED SIT ON THE ADJACENT WALL.

WHERE ARE PLEASING PROPORTIONS SEEN IN THE MODEL?PROPORTIONS AND SCALE SIZE CAN BE SEEN IN THE CHAIR BUILDS. I FEEL THAT THESE TWO CHAIRS ARE AESTHETICALLY PLEASING AND VERY WELL CONSTRUCTED. EQUALLY ARRANGED BUILDING METHODS WERE USED TO ACHIEVE THIS, AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE RESULT OF THE CHAIRS.

HOW DOES SCALE PLAY A ROLE IN THE MASS OF THE FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT?I THINK SCALE IS IMPORTANT IN THE OVERALL COMPOSITION BECAUSE AN IMPROPERLY SCALED SET OF FURNITURE CAN TAKE UP TOO MUCH SPACE, NOT LEAVING ENOUGH ROOM FOR OTHER ELEMENTS. A STUDY MODEL ALLOWS THE DESIGNER TO ADJUST AND RETRACT ANY FURNITURE ELEMENTS THAT ARE NECESSARY PRIOR TO STARTING THE FINAL DESIGN STAGES. ONCE PROPERLY SCALED FURNITURE IS PLACED ACCURATELY, KEEPING ALL SPACES IN MIND, THE DESIGNER CAN GO AHEAD START CHOOSING COLORS, ACCESSORIES, UPHOLSTERY AND LIGHTING.

WHAT ARE THE DOMINANT AND SUBDOMINANT FORMS SEEN IN THE DESIGN?THE MOST DOMINANT FORMS IN THE STUDY MODEL ARE THE WALLS. I THINK I MAY HAVE SCALED THEM A BIT TOO HIGH FOR THE INTERIOR SPACE TO BE SEEN. LIGHT CAN BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE SPACE, HOWEVER, THE LARGE WALL DO BLOCK ADJACENT LIGHT FROM OTHER PORTIONS OF THE MODEL. IN THE SUBDOMINANT FORM, I BELIEVE THE BED IS VERY SUCCESSFUL, AND THE CHAIRS, NIGHTSTAND AND BENCH COMPLIMENT THE SPACE, ADDING A SENSE OF RHYTHM AND BALANCE.

Process Sketches and Cabinetry Ideation

When thinking about space and how Robb and Brianne Stark would use their new home, I decided to ensure the first floor plan included all requirements as per client profile. The kitchen and staircase areawhere already included in the floor plan. Two options are provided for the client in two different layouts, both layouts meet the clients requirements. 17

On the second floor, all bedrooms will be situated on this floor for better convenience in the future. There will be a large master bedroom, and two very similar sized rooms that can be used as guest spaces or children’s bedrooms.

Justification of the Solution

How did you develop your concept for the project? The concept for the Stark project was derived from their love of simple and natural design, music appreciation, young and vibrant persona and sense of adventure. Throughout the entire space, neautral colors and were used to inflect the feeling of an open and breezy concept, where the furniture and lighting was not to obstructive or harsh to the couple. All fabric choices and finishes were reflective of nature and elements used in the space were simple in shape and design.

What were your design goals, and how were they achieved? The goal for the Stark project was simple: create a unique space, one that the couple can enjoy for years to come, have adequate storage for additional art and music, keep the floor-plan as open as possible yet keep in mind they would like room to grow in the future. Finally, embrace the Scandinavian design concept of keeping everything reminiscent of nature. All lines should be clean, finishes should be simple and natural light should be top priority. I feel that through the correct furniture selections, not choosing large pieces or un-natural shapes, a light color palette, un-finshed or neutral finishes and an partially open floor-plan this design problem was successfully solved.

How does your design reflect the culture and diversity of the client who will occupy the space? In regards to the diversity of the Stark couple, both Robb and Brianne wanted a modern feel to the entire space but reflective of Brianne's Scandinavian heritage. All furniture is elegant yet modern, simple yet luxurious. Keeping the colors neatural and warm, and injecting pops of color keeps the space fresh and modern, and Missoni accessories really brighten the space up, allowing for a comfortable place to call home.

How may have working on your schematic plans led to revising some of your design decisions? In my original schematic plans, the room divisions where not as well defined and some of the spaces did not make sense in the overall design concept. Throughout the entire process, I kept referring back to the plans and change accordingly. The schematic plans were a very important step in the overall design process and I used them as a "stable reference" in which I was able to move back and forth to throughout the process.

Identify how human functions and spatial relationships determined your design planning. Throughout the space, rooms were divided by functionality and most of the spaces were left open and free of doors, especially on the second level. In the home office, I took into consideration the pass through up to the third level, so doors were removed and a partial wall was built. This makes the home office a wonderful space for both parts of the couple to enjoy. While the third floor is divided the most, each room is still large enough for room to grow, incase the couple is thinking about a family in the future.
