Jenny has a 13 year old son named

William who is autistic. She is an ICU

nurse who would like to be near the

hospital she works at.

Jenny is an avid runner and would like to

have access to running trails along the

river in her neighborhood. Her hobbies

are scrapbooking, running and collecting

medals from racing.

Jenny is of Hispanic ethnicity and her

preferred style is Art Nouveau. Even

though she is working with a low to mid

budget, requirements for her new home

are a small powder room or full bath on

the second level (depending on the layout

of the bedrooms), home office,

living/dining room space, 3 bedrooms,

space for crafts, laundry space, linen and

clothing space and a custom designed

built-in storage piece with display space.

SECOND EMPIRE STYLE ARCHITECTURE

This home is fashioned after the Second Empire Style

which was popular between the 1860’s to 1880’s.

This particular style is formally known as French

Empire Style. Some identifying features are the

mansard roofing, tiles, dormers above the windows

and eaves that were used above the windows and

sides.

The Second Empire Style inspiration came from

France during the reign of Napoleon III, who

spearheaded a major undertaking to transform

Parisian streets and buildings into the fabulously

grandiose structures we know today

CONCEPT STATEMENT

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Warm, energetic and inviting with Art Nouveau style will describe the mood for Jenny’s home. An open floor concept will be applied to the overall design of the space, with emphasis on the windows bringing an abundance of light into home. The home is located on the second floor of a mixed-use building, with an art studio below. Warm, earth toned colors (creams, browns, greens) along with bursts of red and gold will provide the energetic and inviting feeling throughout the space and give nod to the Art Nouveau style (sinuous asymmetrical lines like that of a plant that form patterns, or a woman’s curvy silhouette) which in turn will compliment the historical nod to the building’s architecture. Upholstered furnishings, textured fabrics and accessories reminiscent of the Art Nouveau style, complimented with the warm and energetic earth tone colors will create that desired look and feel for Jenny’s home.

COLOR PALETTE

The inspiration behind the color

palette chosen for Jenny’s home

was of an interior room with Art

Nouveau style. The analogous

palette is of warm neutrals of

creams, browns and greens. I

changed the hue of the third

color by incorporating yellow,

gave it a medium value and

muted saturation to make it a

yellow-orange hue. Using the

yellow-orange hue I darkened the

value and muted the saturation to

produce an orange-red hue.

These colors add richness to the

overall color scheme. This color

palette also compliments her

heritage and personal style.

Fire and Life Safety (Tiffany)

403.6 Smoke alarms

The buildings would be considered Residential Group R occupancies because of the residential space on the upper floors so they would need to

comply with this code.

804.2 Automatic sprinkler systems

Several of the buildings for this project meet the exception under 804.2.1 because they are three

stories or less, and therefore would not be required to comply with this code. However, the four story

building would be required to comply.

SECTION 805 MEANS OF EGRESS

The buildings would not be required to comply with Section 805 codes because the exits and

corridors are not shared by more than one tenant within the work area.

Energy Conservation (Tiffany)

811.1 Minimum requirements

The existing structure does not have to be changed in compliance with energy conservation codes,

however any new construction/alterations would be required to comply with the International Energy Conservation Code or International

Residential Code energy requirements.

Perhaps small stands can go on each side of the chaise to enhance that wall as the focal point of the bedroom and give a more symmetrical balance.

WHERE ARE PLEASING PROPORTIONS SEEN IN THE MODEL?

Pleasing proportions are seen with the bed and the nightstands and the chaise being centered under the window gives added depth to the room.

HOW DOES SCALE PLAY A ROLE IN THE MASS OF THE FURNITURE ARRANGEMENT?

Scale plays an important role in the mass of the furniture arrangement due to the size of the room. The larger the room the more mass the furniture needs to be in order to consume the negative space.

WHAT ARE THE DOMINANT AND SUBDOMINANT FORMS SEEN IN THE DESIGN?

The dominant form in the design is rectangular. The bed, chaise and dresser took the dominant forms. The subdominant form was the square nightstands.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE SOLUTION

JUSTIFICATION AND REFLECTION

The concept for the Donahue project was based on the client’s needs and wishes, as well as the architectural style of the building she resides in. The design goal was to incorporate the client’s heritage along with her personal style and her son’s special needs into the design. The design reflects her culture in the warm colors of the fabrics and finishes, and her Art Nouveau style was reflected in the furnishings, finishes and accessories.

Working on the schematic plans numerous times led to revising some design decisions because of the client’s wishes to have a craft room, office space, powder room, laundry room and clothing and linens storage. Different variations of the schematic plans helped to satisfy all of the client’s needs as well as give her extra closet space and a work / study area in her son’s room.

The need to have the laundry, linen and closet spaces central to all the bedrooms was crucial in the design process so as to give the client and any guests easy access to daily activities. The need for a powder room on the first level of the residence was crucial to the design so as to give the client, her family and guests easy access to utilize the bathroom without having to walk up to the second level.

JUSTIFICATION AND REFLECTION (CONT’D)

This class has really helped me to see how important it is to have more than one option for your client. Completing the bubble diagrams really helped me to see that. Once I finished the bubble diagrams and placed the walls in I was able to see my previous diagrams come to fruition and see where I needed to make changes. Continuing to work on specification sheets and getting measurements / units accurate will certainly help me become more proficient in my studies, as I seem to struggle in that area. Developing a client profile and concept statement also helps me to pay more attention to the client’s needs and cultural background.

The perspective renderings and CAD drawings will help me in marketing my skills as I become more efficient in those areas. Also, my thoroughness in making sure all aspects of a project are put together in one cohesive and orderly document will demonstrate my meticulous attention to detail and order when the time comes to apply as a candidate for an entry-level position as well as building my own e-commerce company.
