Media Homework Project

Dear Parent/Carer,

The Media Department are issuing homework projects in order to encourage and improve the independent learning skills of the students. This will involve each student being given a different project to complete which will be closely linked to the work they undertake in their Media classes.

Your child’s teacher will set a deadline or multiple deadlines by which the project MUST be handed back in. Each completed project will receive written feedback and targets on how the student can improve their work. Any additional support that might be needed will always be given to all students, we welcome and encourage students to approach any member of the Media Department to arrange appropriate times and days to access direct teacher support, group support and/or access to IT facilities.

The idea of the project is to allow the students to manage their own time and learning effectively. They can, of course, consult with their Media teacher at any time with what they are doing, and bring in their work to ask for guidance with it. However, we would ask that the students complete the project as much as possible by themselves. We feel that learning to complete the project unaided is almost as fundamental as what they may be studying.

Important notes for students

All homework to be completed in BLUE or BLACK PEN and any drawings in pencil. Any extra sheets of paper used for a homework task should be A4 sheets of paper, either

plain or lined. All homework should be written in full sentences - unless the task tells you to use bullet

points. This homework book should be kept in GOOD CONDITION. This means, it should not be

ripped or damaged. The booklet is NOT to have any GRAFFITI within it.

The Media Department believe that independent learning skills are fundamental to ensuring that students make progress in Media.

Media Homework ProjectStoryboards

This half-term, you will be completing your homework project on storyboarding. You will be working on discovering how films are created, choices by examining the contents of a real screenplay and creating a series of pre-production storyboard to accompany them.

In order to show that you can use and evaluate the skills you have learnt in class, you must ensure that you complete ALL the work by the deadline set by your teacher and have your parents/ carers sign the sheet confirming that you are working regularly on the project.

Deadline date:

Instructions:

Read the screenplay. The screenplay includes dialogue the actors must say, the action occurring in the scene and indications of camerawork and movement. The screenplays are genre specific therefore think about the codes/ conventions of the genre you are working with and how that will affect the overall look of your designs.

You are then to create 20 board storyboards where you bring the screenplay to life. Make decisions about the camera positioning, distances, angles and movement. Focus on the 5 elements of Mise-en-scene:

Position in the frame Facial expression/body language Hair/make-up/costume Colour/lighting Props/setting

Ensure all details on the storyboard are filled in with detail and presents your vision.Try you best when drawing/designing your storyboards, if you are not the best drawer ensure what you draw makes sense.

You will find an example of a storyboard, use this to model your ideas and storyboard.

ThrillerINT. MASTER BEDROOM - NIGHT

Meg puts sheets on her bed in the master bedroom.

She fills a glass of water, puts it on a box she's using fora night table.

She plugs in a battery charger for her phone, places thephone in the cradle. It BEEPS. "Charging."

She sets the digital clock, puts it next to the glass ofwater. It's 12:26.

She gets in bed, her side, the left side.

She lies in the dark, half an acre of empty bed across fromher.

We drift off her, see the clock again. The time changes, thenumber one dissolves away, changing the time to --

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. MASTER BEDROOM - NIGHT

-- 2:26. Meg is in a hard, deep sleep. We drift out thedoor of the master bedroom, into the third floor hallway, anddown the open stairwell. We glide through the entry floor, still gently falling through the stairwell's airway, droppingeven further, all the way down to the kitchen floor, theground floor.

We drift across the darkened kitchen, through the canyon of moving boxes, approach the window that looks out on the street.

We move right up against the window, peer through the glassjust as --

-- a van pulls up across the street and stops. Can't seethrough its windows. No movement for a moment, then thedriver's door opens and a MAN climbs out. He wears darkclothes.

The Man closes the door, looks both ways, and starts acrossthe street towards us. He's carrying a bag of some kind.

He goes to the door, and we drift down toward the doorknob. We hear a key slide into the door, rattle.

But the lock doesn't turn. The key slides out, back inagain, jiggles. Still won't open the door.

Casey spins around like lightning facing the glass door.
