TRAILER ANALYSISCamerawork:

• The use of an over the shoulder shot when the man and women are comforting each other shows the level of authority over the two characters as it highlights the male character to be in control of the situation and is brave one of the two. This distinguishes a difference in gender within the trailer as the males are shown to be brave and heroic in contrast to the women being vulnerable and in need of saving.

• The use of a close-up shot on the female character when supernatural things are happening shows her to be scared and vulnerable in the situation, therefore we sympathise with her as we realise she is in potential danger. This is illustrated when she screams as she realises that her baby is in danger. This shows her to be vulnerable and helpless which is a stereotype within horror films.

• The use of a low-angle shot when the male character is in the hallway shows him to be in a vulnerable situation as it is out of his control and therefore begins to get scared and worried. However it also highlights how he is being affected by the supernatural forces and the other characters are becoming worried about him. This is also highlighted through the other characters reactions to the male character as they all seem scared.

TRAILER ANALYSISSound:

• The use of the non-diegetic music of a horror-style nursery rhyme adds a dramatic effect during the scene where the children are in danger, this non-diegetic music creates further tension as it highlights the risk and danger involved with the children and there is nothing that the adults can do to protect them.

• The use of the background siren throughout the scene at the dinner table creates a dramatic and builds tension and panic as the siren is associated with danger and implies that the characters need to ‘get out of there’ . This creates panic and worry for the audience as we realise that something bad is about to happen of which is the characters are oblivious and unaware.

• The use of high-pitched dialogue such as ‘Get out of my head!’ and screaming builds tension and creates panic for both the characters within the film and also the audience themselves. As the audience we sympathise with the characters as they are in danger and at risk.

TRAILER ANALYSISMise-en-scene

• The costumes used such as the white clothing is conventional as white is conventionally used on ghosts or those of the dead. Also, the scars on the supernatural figures is conventional as it suggests that there is danger involved and people may get hurt. This would hook the audience into the trailer as they would want to know what it is, but also create fear and sympathy towards the character.

• The use of props such as the baby monitor and the pram adds to the suspicions that the children are at risk and as these objects associated with children are being haunted and tampered with, it implies that something bad may happen to the children. This adds worry and creates further tension as children are most vulnerable so we sympathise with them more.

• The use of low-key lighting throughout the trailer adds to the rising tension as the dark is typically associated with bad things happening and is a convention of a horror trailer. Also it makes the trailer more engaging and keeps you on edge.

TRAILER ANALYSISEditing:

• The use fast paced editing between the shots taken throughout the trailer helps to convey the genre and adds to the rising tension which is building up throughout the trailer, this is used to keep the audience engaged and on edge. This would help create tension & fear that something may come up unexpectedly and the characters are in danger.

• The use of cross-cutting between characters is used to show their reactions to certain situation and creates a contrast between the two genders as the male character is conveyed to be strong and brave whereas the female character is shown to be helpless and vulnerable.

• The use of cutting between scenes highlights how nowhere is safe and the characters are at risk wherever they are. This adds to the tension throughout the trailer as we sympathise with the characters as we know they may get hurt.

POSTER ANALYSIS• The poster follows the typical conventions for a successful promotional poster. This is because the image is central & therefore allows the audience to focus their attention to the setting within the image & then the main image of the baby. This enables the horror behind the poster to be revealed to the audience such as the dark background. The use of the main image being of a child and the baby walker implies that the children are of who are at risk, also the baby walker is used to highlight that this object may be under influence of supernatural forces of which is illustrated within the trailer.

• The title is bold and central which grabs the audiences attention and focus. Also the colour-scheme of the title such as red and white are colours associated with danger , supernatural, ghosts and death. All of these are typical of a horror film therefore the colour-scheme is conventional and effective.

DVD ANALYSIS• From looking at the previous

poster for ‘Insidious 2’ it is clear that they link as for the house style: dark background & white and red font styles These colours are conventional for a horror film as they connote danger and death of which is closely linked to images of the characters which suggests that the charters are at risk.

• The image is a mid-shot of the characters. This is effective as it shows their facial expressions which highlight panic , worry and fright. Therefore we sympathise with them and realise that something bad is happening to them.

• The pull quote: ‘It will take what you love most’ is shocking and frightening. This is used to spark an interest from the audience, as they will want to know what the quote implies and whether it will actually happen. It is also a scary quote which is conventional and relates to the image as they are holding each other, contrasting the quote.

WEBSITE ANALYSIS

• The brand identity is clear here in another of their promotional packages. As for the dark coloured background. This helps convey danger & fear for the audience and the characters.

• Again there is a consistent colour-scheme through all of their promotional packages as these colours are conventional of a horror film and connote death. There is information about the film in the central screen which implies that it must be important and they want you to read it.

• The whole layout of the page follows the route of the eye which is another convention in advertisement and it grabs the audiences attention as the colours are contrasted which makes it seem bright and ‘in your face’.
