This Week: Love Regardless of the
Cost
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, You are the Temple of God
The idea that we are Temples of God reminds me of the two sessions of Family Based Catechesis when we learned about Baptism and Reconciliation. When we are baptized we receive sanctifying grace - the very life of God within our souls. That sanctifying grace is nourished in our souls through each sacrament we receive, especially the Eucharist. That grace, however, is lost when we sin mortally - we are literally expelling God from our souls and removing His help from our lives. That sanctifying grace can be restored through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, whereby we entrust our sins to the absolute and abundant mercy of God. As Temples of God, we should guard and protect ourselves from anything that would limit God’s grace in our lives. We should live lives animated by the grace of God as the source of all of our actions. Likewise, we should guard and protect the sanctity of all those we encounter. We should never do anything that might suggest that we are anything less than the Temple of God.

Love Your Enemies Jesus calls us to task in our Gospel Reading this weekend and teaches us that we are called to love all people - including our enemies. This is difficult to accept and even more difficult to put into practice. How can I desire what is best for the other when I don’t even have the slightest bit of appreciation for them? We must recognize in each encounter we have with other people - whether they are our friends or our enemies - we must see in them someone made in the image and likeness of God, who is called to communion with Him, who was created out of love for the very of purpose of love. Who might be our “enemy” that God has intentionally put in our life to love? At the very end of the Gospel Reading, Jesus tells us “be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” What a task! This is the task of our lives and the vocation to which Jesus Christ has given to each of us. We are called to purify our hearts and minds of everything that gets in the way of our love of God and neighbor. Jesus gave us the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist to heal and nourish us on this spiritual journey.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Love Regardless of the Cost, as we Learn, Love, & Live Christ’s Mission!
As we prepare to enter Lent, consider those things that are taking the place of God or at the very least, obstacles in the way of your relationship with God. It may be that you need to remove something from your life in order to purify your relationship with God and with your neighbor. Chocolate is probably not keeping you from living these relationships to the full. It may be that you need to add something to your life - like more prayer - more time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament - more encounters of His Mercy in Reconciliation. 3 Pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting, & Almsgiving St. Augustine described fasting and almsgiving as the “two wings of prayer” because they are signs of humility and charity. I encourage all of us to reflect on these three pillars and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in our Lenten journey. Here are some Lenten suggestions:
Place a rosary and Bible on your pillow for morning & evening prayer time.
