A RISING TIDEI

n recent years the manufacturing sector in the Sultanate has seen a phenomenal growth with a variety of manufacturing hubs mushrooming across different regions. And Voltamp Oman is precisely one such organisation, leading the transformers manufacturing sector. Voltamp

Oman has been successfully catering to a wide range of industrial sectors including oil and gas, construction, and infrastructure in Oman and the Middle East and North Africa for a good seventeen years.

Voltamp Oman manufactures a wide range of power and distribution transformers, low voltage switchgears and packaged sub-stations using cutting edge technology at their manufacturing facilities in Rusayl. In addition, the company also has a well recognised service capability for these products. Voltamp Oman also boasts a strong in-house design team and technology from global partners and has given the company a vital competitive edge over other manufacturers.

In spite of the global economic meltdown that has rattled high-profile markets world-over, there have been sure signs that the transformer business continues to thrive in this region. Voltamp Oman has stepped up to this challenge and has been pursuing ambitious expansion plans. A new manufacturing facility at the Sohar industrial area is on the verge of successful completion. This facility, being built to international standards, will be manufacturing large power transformers of 220kV class and is scheduled to begin operations by the first quarter of 2011. Expansion of the current facilities in Rusayl is also underway.

Voltamp Oman are driven by their commitment to give its customers, products of enduring quality and are constantly striving to upgrade its capabilities in order to serve its customers better. It is organisations like Voltamp Oman which put Oman’s manufacturing prowess on the map.

OVERVIEW

Voltamp pioneered the man-ufacturing of transformers in Oman in 1993 by setting up a plant with technology

from Babcock Transformers, UK. Since then, Voltamp has gone from strength to strength by extending its production capacity as well as its product range. It currently manufacturers Special Transformers for the Oil & Gas Indus-try and medium power transformers up to 15 MVA 33kV Class. Thereby creating a strong Market position in Oman and the GCC.

Voltamp’s vision is to become a major contributor in the power sector of the MENA region by offering quality products and solutions to maximise wealth of stakeholders. The demand for the company’s range of products has shown a considerable improvement since the start of the year and even the export markets have shown good prospects. This is a clear testament of the company’s dedication and unparallel reputation of manufacturing reliable, high quality products and prompt service. Qais Mohammed Al Yousef, believes that Voltamp Oman’s

success today is attributed to their commitment to Quality and Reliability which has been a fundamental principle of their operations which has made Voltamp a name to reckon with over the years.

Looking at the growing energy scenario in the Middle East, and as an endeavor to take the technology leadership position, we took the BIG step to manufacture large Power Transformers in Oman. In order to enable Omani public partners for Voltamp in this growth story, and mobilise resources for the expansion programme, Voltamp made an Initial Public Offering in 2008, which was a great success. Apropos this, the Board formed a ‘Projects Committee’, comprising of four Directors, in order to decide on major parameters and expedite decisions on equipment selection and ordering under the Chairmanship of Eng. Mubarak Salim Al Busaidi.

The site as Sohar was selected after exhaustive studies comprising market and logistics. One of the key parameters in favour of Sohar was the World Class Port which will facilitate efficient import of raw materials and export of transformers.

“The construction work for our green field transformer factory is in the advanced stages and we expect to commence commercial production by Q1 2011,” adds Al Yousef. This new facility is being built to global

standards - the first of its kind in the entire MENA region.

For the large power transformers, Voltamp entered into a technical alliance with TATUNG Co, Taiwan which has been manufacturing Transformers since 1960. Currently TATUNG has an ongoing technology tie-up with TOSHIBA of Japan for certain range of Power Transformers.

Al Yousef goes on to say that, the facility will allow Voltamp Oman to offer product ranges that are currently being imported from outside the region. This will not only save costs and time, it will also offer the advantage of a local service backup.

Al Yousef assures, “Voltamp stands committed in providing quality products and services and believe that we will continue to serve our clients even better in the days to come.”

The company has been actively en-hancing its efforts to recruit and train Omani candidates. In fact, the recruit-ment of 20 Omani trade apprentices through the Ministry of Manpower has recently been concluded.

Al Yousef is quick to acknowledge that their success today has been a result of combined efforts of the entire team. “I would like to thank my fellow Board Members, Sayyid Aymen bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Abdulredha bin Mustafa Sultan, Mubarak Salim Al Busaidy, Saibal Sen, Sebastian Manavalan and Krishna Gupta, for their wisdom and guidance. I would also like to thank the Voltamp Management and employees for their sincere efforts in taking up the challenges for the fast implementation of the Sohar Project. I convey my sincere thanks to our shareholders for the confidence they have reposed upon the company and in its Board.”

As we enter the 40th Year of the Renaissance, we become increasingly appreciative of the vision and policies of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said which gave an Omani Company the ambition and courage to implement an iconic hi-tech power transformer factory in the Sultanate. We take this opportunity to congratulate His Majesty on the occasion of the 40th National Day and we thank His Majesty and His Majesty’s Government for creating a sustainable business environment in Oman.

Voltamp stands committed to providing quality products and

services and we believe that we will

THE VOLTAMP ADVANTAGE

THE FUTURE OF INNOVATIONIn conversation with Alok Bhargava, CEO, on what makes Voltamp Oman the best in the business

Our mission is to be a man-ufacturing hub for trans-formers and switchgears in the generation, trans-

mission and distribution networks, thereby providing total solutions to-wards and meeting the requirements of the power systems in the Middle East and North Africa region”

The company has been diligently working towards achievement of this mission by continually improving their product offerings. The current range offered from its three factories in Rusayl includes power and distribu-tion transformers up to 15 MVA 33kV class, multi-tap transformers for the oil & gas industry, several types of special transformers and low voltage switch-gears including intelligent MCCs.

The transformers are fully designed and manufactured in Oman from raw materials sourced from globally re-nowned manufacturers. The switch-gears are fully designed and as-sembled in-house with components sourced from reputed European manufactures. This helps Voltamp in maintaining its quality leadership position in the country.

In 2008, Voltamp decided to manu-facture large EHV 220 kV power trans-formers for the transmission sector at a Greenfield site and entered into a technology transfer agreement with Tatung Company of Taiwan. Sohar, with its logistics advantages, scored over sites in neighboring countries. The company did face initial land problems which led to some delays. “We are very grateful to PEIE for helping us and allocating 80,000 sq m prime land in Phase V of the Sohar Industrial Area.”

We began construction activities for our 14,500 sq m Phase I on 22nd Mar 2010. “Speed and accuracy of project implementation of our new factory will set new benchmarks in the region. The equipment, specifi-cally the exhaustive in-house test fa-cility, has been sourced from leading manufacturers. The factory at Sohar is being built to global standards and will be ready for commercial produc-tion by Q1 of 2011.”

“We are now offering 132 kV Class power transformers up to 150 MVA from this new facility and are com-mitted to deliver a product which will make the whole of the GCC/MENA region proud.”

Voltamp currently has a full-fledged Engineering Services Division which undertakes site and workshop repairs for transformers of any make as well as annual maintenance contracts. Voltamp has provided services for

transformers up to 132kV class. “The new power transformer facility at So-har will further enhance this repair capabilities by offering workshop repairs of transformers up to 220 kV Class.”

“One of our major focus has been training and development of em-ployees, specially Omanis. The criti-cal core cutting facility is managed by Omanis independently. For our Rusayl Distribution Transformer ex-pansion unit, we are planning 60 per cent Omanisation to start with”.

“We wish to start the operations of the new facility at Sohar with a very high level of Omanisation. To achieve this, we have signed up an agree-ment with the Ministry of Manpower for inducting 20 trade apprentices, who will be trained over a period for various skill-sets and absorbed into our operating units.”

Voltamp offers an open work culture where barriers between management and employees are minimal. There

is a constant endeavour to meet the expectations of employees, including enhancing their skills. At the same time, the management’s expecta-tions are clearly understood by the employees. A percentage of profit is shared with the employees in the form of annual bonuses. “Voltamp offers an excellent example of man-agement-employee relationship.”

Voltamp follows the Corporate Gov-ernance guidelines in letter and in spirit. We also follow the rules and regulations framed by the CMA. “We believe in total transparency in our accounting practices and fully com-ply with IFRC requirements,” adds Basant Bhageria, Voltamp’s Financial Controller.

He continues “We have a strong bal-ance sheet and we leverage the same to our advantage. We negotiated probably the best terms to finance our Sohar Project”.

Bhargava is very appreciative of the support and guidance provided by Voltamp’s Chairman and the Board of Directors. “We clearly understand the expectations of the Board of Directors and get excellent guidance and sup-port from our Chairman and Board Members, specially when it comes to taking major investment decisions”. He concludes “With the expansions of the Rusayl facilities and the new Power Transformer factory in Sohar, we are sure that Voltamp is on an ex-emplary growth path.”

One of our major focus has been

training and development of

employees, especially Omanis

INTERVIEW

Kindly tell us a little about Vol-tamp Oman’s project in Sohar.Voltamp Oman has set up a green field power transformer project to manufacture power transformers up to 220kV class, at the Sohar Indus-trial Area. Apropos this, a technical collaboration has been extended with Tatung Heavy Electric Plant, Taiwan. Tatung is known for manufactur-ing varieties of power transformers and many power products for more than 90 years. We feel that having a plant in the Sohar Industrial area will certainly be advantageous for us be-cause of its proximity to many engi-neering units and transport links.

What makes this project unique?Well, firstly, this kind of a Power Transformer Manufacturing facility that is being set up by Voltamp Oman is for the first time not only in Oman, but in whole of GCC area. This itself gives us a tremendous edge over our competitors. Also, our management team responsible for setting up the power transformer plant is from various MNC’s with immense experience in setting up this kind of green field project. So we are looking at combining a variety of

expertise and know-how to create a plant with standards simliar to MNC’s producing simliar power products. This plant is a pioneering facility which is sure to put us on the map.

The Sohar project certainly seems promising. Would you kindly tell us a little more about the technical aspects of the plant and its proposed capacity? The layout of the plant and the ma-chinery has been optimised with straight line flow of products as well as feeding shops. Both, the plant and machineries are being sourced from world known companies like Haefely (Switzerland), DELU (Germany), SANMI Corporation (Japan), Meas-

urement International (Canada), and KEC (India) and will ensure the plant is that of global standards – even the specifications are in line with inter-national standards.

The plant in Sohar is being built with an initial capacity of 6000 MVA per year. This capacity may be augment-ed in future up to 10000 MVA per year with small investments. While fixing layout future expansion of facility has been kept as the coterie.

Voltamp Oman is introducing material movement by ‘air cushion equipments’ in this world class global facility for the very first time. Again, this has never been done

before and is a pioneering concept in this region.

When are operations expected to begin at the plant? The construction of the plant has been underway since April 2010 and construction activity has been going on in full swing. It is likely to be completed in record time of just nine months. Initial plant construc-tion area is 14500 sq m and the plot area is 80000 sq m with future scope for expansion of facilities. Both, the plant as well as machinery erection is being planned, partly parallel to on-going civil works and this will ensure that commercial production starts from the first quarter of 2011.

HUMAN RESOURCES

Kindly tell us the functions that the Human Resources depart-ment performs at Voltamp? Our HR team mainly implements the HR policies. It assesses and meets the manpower requirements. They are involved in performance evalu-ation, employee relations and legal compliance. We strongly believe that effective HR compliance programmes need to be integrated into business strategies rather than just lip service. Compliance should have top down approach to all levels. We emphasise that the workplace must be kept safe and discrimination won’t be tolerated.

We are associated with recruitment, selection, behaviour management and employee relations, compensation, rewards and benefits management. We maintain a very good working relationship with the Ministry of Man-power and have obtained the approval for HR policy, safety policy, grievance policy, punishment policy, etc. We also have a good relationship with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

How do you conduct your recruit-ment and selection processes?Employee recruitment forms a ma-

jor part of HR activities. We believe that recruitment activities need to be responsive to the ever-increasingly competitive market to secure suit-ably qualified and capable recruits at all levels. To be effective these initia-tives need to include how and when to source the best recruits internally or externally. In Voltamp all recruitment processes are conducted in accord-ance to Oman Labor Laws and HR Pol-icies are as per the specifications of individual department requirements. We have implemented Omanisation at all levels of the organisation from bot-tom to top positions and will continue recruiting fresh Omani graduates of high calibre.

In the manufacturing industry,

proper training is vital. Kindly tell us about the objectives and methods of your employee train-ing programmes.HRD can be defined simply as devel-oping the most important section of any business, its human resource, by attaining or upgrading employee skills and attitudes at all levels to maximize enterprise effectiveness. Training is the act of increasing the knowledge and skills of an employee for doing a par-ticular job. This will help them develop good knowledge about their jobs which will ultimately result in good quality of work and increased productivity. The more we invest in our employees, the more we get in return.

Trained workers can work more ef-ficiently and can handle machines, tools, materials in a proper way and also eliminating wastage to a large extent. We also believe that appropri-ate training makes an employee more useful, efficient and more effective. Besides that, training also ensures that mistakes are avoided and that there are fewer accidents on the job. Effective training is an invaluable investment in the human resources of an organisation.

OMANISATION EFFORTS

Core cutting and Step lap core build-ing form an

important part in the production of each and every transformer. To convert the coils into laminations, we han-dle the most sophis-ticated fully automatic GEORG CNC cutting machine supply by the German Company. Today we handle the machine efficiently thanks to the elaborate training sessions at their factory. Its an excellent example of training and deployment of Omanis into the core areas of production of high quality transformers.”

Creating A Safer WorkplaceThe newly formed HSE Department headed by Salim Al Amri, has gained substantial grounds in the last six months of functioning. Appropri-ate health and safety practices are in place to protect employees and to ensure that relevant legislation is being followed. According to Salim, “Safety has become a buzz word

OMANIS INTO CORE OPERATIONYahya Nasser, Head of the Lamination facility, cuts coils efficiently into laminations

within the company with posters all over the factory premises. In the short time, all the statutory requirements in a factory environment have been met including approvals from the ROP for

fire equipments, smoke detectors and fire alarms installed in all Rusayl units. We have also conducted complete evacuation tests to make sure all staff are familiar with the new assembly points during emergency situations. We are routinely sending our staff for HSE courses now.”

HSE is about real health and safety, regulating some of the hazardous aspects of an industry such as manu-facturing and Voltamp is committed to protecting the health, safety and welfare of their employees, and other people who might be affected by their business.Salim Al Amri, HSE Head
