Theyexplore the relationship between human and non-human animals, drawing upon a wide range of disciplinary formations suchas sociology, philosophy, history, literary studies, cinema studies and the study of popular culture and by doing so provideinsight into the development and progression of our changing attitudes towards animals. In analysing the representation ofhuman-animal interactions in literature, film, the visual arts and other cultural forms, our seminar will discuss contemporarycontributions to this new field of scholarly inquiry.

Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements andgrading.Since the last decade of the twentieth century, scholars have begun to examine the various ways in which political, economicand cultural transformations have been changing the realm of the social in terms of affect, that is, in terms of visceralforces that exist beneath, alongside, or generally other than conscious knowing but that can nevertheless drive us towardsmovement, thought, and constantly changing forms of relation. Over the course of the semester students will examine a rangeof theories from scholars working in the field of affect studies alongside novels and poems that all, in various ways, focuson the non-linguistic, corporeal and performative aspects of communication, thus compelling a radical reconsideration of theways in which we understand being and knowledge as something distinctly human. Students will analyse the ways in whichliteratures and theories of affect attempt to recalibrate relations between the organic body and the non-organic, betweenequilibrium-seeking closed systems to open systems of flux and flow, between criticism that is based on the subject as thecentral organising point of consciousness and knowing to one that engages with fields of information as process, and finally,between the human and the nonhuman.

Asquasi-utopian places, especially north American cities have become central hubs of desire, pleasure, and global networks,but also of financial apartheid, racial segregation and restricted access. In the contemporary moment, urban agglomerationsare evolving into complex ecologies entangled with ‘smart’ systems and manifold interactive sign systems. Contemporaryliterary representations of the city thus encode and decode urban structures and designs, map cosmopolitical infrastructuresof the global world and sketch the complex relationship between large material systems, human communities, cultures as wellas individuals. With a special focus on New York and Los Angeles, the seminar will discuss these issues and will trace theaffinities between the city and the contemporary novel.

The discussions will focuson an investigation of the aesthetics of these texts as well as their complex cultural, social etc. contexts in order to grasp ahistoricised concept of (urban) life. Depending on the number of participants, the course will offer ample room for creativepresentations and will either end with a students workshop or with a final paper.

Translation is a powerful tool for improving your proficiency because it uses your native language- your semantic bedrock that all your explorations in the second language build up from. Alan Duff: `Translation developsthree qualities essential to all language learning: flexibility, accuracy, and clarity. It trains the learner to search (flexibility)for the most appropriate words (accuracy) to convey what is meant (clarity).` You learn to think from words and structuresto meanings - translation sensitizes you to the nuances of style and meaning better than anything other language learningactivity. By contrasting the meanings of words and syntax, you can move away from literal (whatever that means!) translationsto meaning (whatever that is!). When you think about it, any real interaction with an author or a person speaking involves actsof translation - the deeper the engagement, the more challenging and fruitful the translation. The number of participants in thiscourse is limited to 20 students.

There is a synergy between translating and understanding imaginativeprose: in fact, I would claim there is no better way to understand a literary work than to attempt a translation of it. And nolanguage activity I can think of demands a more intensive reflection on the contrastive meanings of words and syntax thantranslating literature. There will be two parts to the course: the first translating poetry the other translating short prose fiction.(Most of the prose fiction text will only be translated in part, given considerations of time and work load – and that I prefer alot of attention to a shorter text than a hurried translation of a longer one.) Since reflection on the art of translating not onlyincreasing your understanding of literature as well as translation but tends to stimulate better translations, we will spend thefirst two sessions thinking about literary translation rather than doing it.

Using the language to perform complex academicthinking and speaking tasks seems the most promising way to achieve this. In this tutorial we want to give you the opportunityto strengthen your already advanced proficiency in spoken English by thinking about complex questions, expressingyour thoughts, and – above all – responding to the arguments of others cogently and in the appropriate register. It shouldstrengthen your ability to participate in academic discussions as well as think both charitably and critical about a plurality ofviews on a given subject. In keeping with these purposes, we will not emphasize debating formats where rhetorical flourishwith a view to ‘winning’ a persuasion game is the chief goal we will debate to get clearer and deeper on the substance of thedebates. Not speed and superficial point-scoring, but intelligent defense and respectful criticism of substantial arguments willbe our focus.

Prüfungsnebenleistungen sind immer unbenotet und werden lediglichmit "bestanden" bzw. "nicht bestanden" bewertet. Die Modulbeschreibung regelt, obdie Prüfungsnebenleistung eine Teilnahmevoraussetzung für eine Modulprüfung odereine Abschlussvoraussetzung für ein ganzes Modul ist. Als Teilnahmevoraussetzungfür eine Modulprüfung muss die Prüfungsnebenleistung erfolgreich vor der Anmeldungbzw. Teilnahme an der Modulprüfung erbracht worden sein. Auch für Erbringung einerPrüfungsnebenleistungen wird eine Anmeldung vorausgesetzt. Diese fällt immer mitder Belegung der Lehrveranstaltung zusammen, da Prüfungsnebenleistung im Rahmeneiner Lehrveranstaltungen absolviert werden. Sieht also Ihre fachspezifische OrdnungPrüfungsnebenleistungen bei Lehrveranstaltungen vor, sind diese Lehrveranstaltungenzwingend zu belegen, um die Prüfungsnebenleistung absolvieren zu können.

Studienleistung Als Studienleistung werden Leistungen bezeichnet, die weder Prüfungsleistungen nochPrüfungsnebenleistungen sind.
