How we began… One Simple Question: “How hard can it be to get everyone in North America to change one light bulb?“
-Stuart Hickox Project Porchlight - Started in November 2005 •Volunteer-based•Non-Partisan•Not-for-Profit Group•Partners include…
Government BusinessesNGOs Community groupsVOLUNTEERS!
Where we are now… 4 years later…
• Worked with over 10,000 volunteers
• Coordinated with over 600 community groups
• Generated over $25,000,000 in electricity savings
• Prevented over 250 tons of CO2 & Green House Gases (GHGs)
• Delivered over 1.9 million Light Bulbs
“If every household in the United States replaced one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL), the reduction in pollution from energy production would be the equivalent of taking 800,000 cars off the road.”
What it all means…
Notable Recognition…
Let’s get started!
What do I say?
“Good morning. I’m volunteering with Project Porchlight — a non-profit environmental group that is giving out FREE energy saving light bulbs. This one bulb will last 5 to 7 years, uses 66% less energy than the old fashioned bulbs, and will save you about $30 over the life of the bulb. You can help the environment and save money at the same time! We suggest putting this bulb in your Porchlight or another fixture where the light is left on the longest. There’s more information on the box.”
• Thank the resident for their time, for helping the environment and installing the bulb. If the resident asks you to install the bulb for them, politely decline—you want to ensure that their neighbors also get bulbs.
• Answer any questions that you can, but don’t be shy to refer them to us.
• If the resident does not want the bulb, thank them kindly for their time and move on.
• If there is no answer, leave the bulb behind by hanging it on the door with a door hanger. Do not leave it where a small child can get it, or it can be stepped upon.
Wait, wait… There’s more!
FUNdamentals: 101
Have FUN!• Know that by encouraging others to make this one small change, they are making a powerful difference!
• Respect other people’s property; walk on sidewalks, not lawns.
• Be polite and friendly.
• Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
FUNdamentals: 102
Have FUN!• Please do not smoke while delivering.
• Please be clean and tidy
• We are always looking to improve!
• We would love to add your photo to our web site!
Fundamentals: 201
Be SAFE! • Please trust your gut!
If a house looks unfriendly, dark, has a big scary dog patrolling it, or makes you uncomfortable in any way, just skip it! Leave immediately if someone or something makes you afraid mid-route.
• Please wear your Porchlight swag (t-shirt or hat and button) and carry the bag we give you.
Fundamentals: 202
Be SAFE!
• Look at your map and plan your route before you set out.
• Tell someone where you are going (most routes take 1-2 hours).
• Talk to people at the door, but do not go into the house.
• If someone asks you to install the bulb, politely decline.
FUNdamentals: 203
Be SAFE!
• Pair up!
It’s always safer to bring a friend or family member—or even a couple of them—than to go alone. Lots of volunteers like to make bulb delivery a family activity.
• Anyone under the age of 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
• Children should never handle CFL bulbs unsupervised. They are made of glass, and can break if dropped.
Special Note about Delivery:
In all US campaigns, it is prohibited to leave CFLs in mailboxes. In this situation, if no one is home, please use a door hanger.

Let’s Review!
Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs CFL light bulbs use 75% less energy than old-fashioned light bulbs, and last five times longer. Most CFL bulbs last about 6,000 to 10,000 hours (they have warranties of seven years). CFL bulbs fit in most fixtures, indoors and out. For maximum savings, begin by installing CFL bulbs in areas where lights are on for long periods, such as the kitchen, family room, and outdoors—especially your Porchlight!

Can I pitch my bulb in the garbage?
NO! • It’s extremely important that we take this time to be responsible and
work towards proper disposal of CFL bulbs. • The bulbs have a minute amount of mercury. Mercury is a toxin and,
while it’s not dangerous to people to have the bulbs in their house, it’s very bad for the environment if these bulbs end up in the landfill.
• All household hazardous waste (CFL bulbs, batteries, spray cans, etc.) should be disposed of properly. Disposal of CFL bulbs is governed at the municipal level.
• CFL bulbs cannot be manufactured without mercury; the mercury is a gas that gets excited when the electricity runs through it. The mercury lights up, and thus the bulb throws off light.
Simply Put…
1g of Mercury1,000mg = 1g
1 Quarter
1 Thermometer
Recycle, Recycle, Recycle!• The largest source of mercury in North America is from emissions from coal-
fired plants. In other words, by using an incandescent bulb, the power plant is pumping 5 times as much mercury into the atmosphere in the form of plant emissions.
• The mercury in CFL bulbs is completely recoverable and recyclable, as long as people dispose of them properly.
• If the bulb breaks, the amount of mercury is so minute that it dissipates immediately. People should be encouraged to sweep up the residue (rather than vacuuming) and ventilate the area (e.g., open a window) if possible.
