Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXXXII AUGUST 1989 NUMBER 6 EVERYONE'S INVITED TO THE 1989 ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC THE MID-ATLANTIC ASSOCIATION OF GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENTS Wednesday, August 9, 1989 BRETTON WOODS RECREATION CENTER Germantown, Maryland HOSTS Larry Ott, Superintendent Gerald Gerard, General Manager Golf-Tennis-Swimming-Games-Playground Beer-Sweet Corn-Sodas-Ribs-Crabs-Hamburgers-Hot Dogs 1:30 p.m. Until ? — Food Served at 5:00 p.m. Clowns, Games and Entertainment for the Kids AND ITS ALL FREE! PLEASE — COME TO THE PICNIC The board of directors of your associa- tion, in an effort to reach all the members, has changed the schedule of events at the picnic. It was felt that we were not reach- ing all the members previously. Members with working wives, assistants that spend the whole work day at their club, and members that just felt they couldn't get away for the afternoon were being excluded from participation. So — we are going to wait till later (5:00) to break out the food. Golf, tennis, swimming, games, playground, and entertainment will be available after 1:30, so come on out and work up a good appetite and thirst. We hope that those of you that haven't been coming for these reasons will come this year. Remember, bring a salad or dessert for about 10-12 people. The most important thing the day offers is the chance for our families to meet and visit with each other. Your family will realize that they aren't the only ones that have a different summer than the rest of the world does. They may even come to realize that their Dad (husband) is just one of a dedicated group of professionals that give a lot of themselves to their chosen work. DIRECTIONS: Take the River Road exit from the Beltway (495) and drive 11 1 /2 miles toward Potomac to the northwest. Bretton Woods is on the left side of River Road.

Thanks go out to Randy Dayton and Ocean Pines Golf Club for having hosted the July meeting. This was also the site for the 2-man team championship which was a lot of fun and quite competitive. The course and hospitality were superb as always.

Next month's meeting is the annual picnic. Please bring the family out. I promise good food, good drink and a good time, plus a clown act for the kids. This event will be held at Bretton woods with our host Gerry Gerard. The date is Wednesday, August the 9th.

Now down to business. Recently everyone was mailed a survey to allow the MAAGCS to update our files. The response has been underwhelming. If you have not responded, do so now. If you need a copy of the survey, call any of the Board members. Secondly, a gentle reminder to call in your reserva-tions for the monthly meetings and if you are on the permanent sign up list, you must call if you are not going to attend. This is a professional courtesy we owe to the clubs we are visiting.

Walter Montross, CGCS, President

Bretton Woods Rec Center & Staff - Our Hosts

GOLF The results of the first annual 2-man

team championship held at Ocean Pines Golf Club are as follows:

1st place - Todd Cowing and Mike Minard - +12; 2nd place - John Malkowski and Tony Griecoltz - +10; 3rd place -George Renault and Harry Fridley - +3; 4th place - Tom Malehorn and Grant Pensinger - +1; 5th place - John Mock-muller and Lance Ernst - 0; 6th place - Ron Hawkins and John Tutich - -4.

The long drive contest was won by Nick Vance. This was deemed a mild upset by a few self-proclaimed long ball hitters, who were unable to keep the ball straight.

The closest to the pin on #7 was won by Ron Hawkins at 11'. The closest to the pin on #13 was won by Steve Nash at 13'5".

A special thanks to the following companies for their support; Lea's Green Meadows - Herb Lea and Harry Fridley; Prolawn - Tom Malehorn; Cornell Chemi-cal - Don Klein and Tom Walsh; TESCO -Lynn Matson and Bill Hughes.

RELOCATIONS After 25 years as a Golf Course Super-

intendent, the past 17 at the Army Navy Country Club, Mid-Atlantic past presi-dent (1976) David Fairbank is making a career change. He isn't leaving the golf course business, his new position will be that of sales representative for the G.L. Cornell Company. Dave will be selling golf course equipment and supplies in the Northern Virginia area.

Bretton Woods Recreation Center is located on 280 acres along the Potomac River near Germantown, Maryland. It consists of an 18 hole golf course, swim-ming pool complex, picnic area, tennis complex with 14 courts, two soccer fields, two playgrounds for children, and large undeveloped areas of woods and fields at the perimeter of the property. Bretton Woods is owned by the International Monetary Fund; they developed the property in the late 1%0's as a recreational facility for their employees.

The golf course was designed by Eddie Ault. It plays to 6327 yards from the middle tees and 6663 yards from the back tees. The slope rating is 120. The course origi-nally featured wide fairways and open rough areas. In recent years, fairway acreage has been reduced, and tree

planting and growth have reduced the open space in the rough.

Larry Ott has been the Grounds Superintendent at Bretton Woods since May, 1988. During the past year, he has concentrated on the details of the exist-ing maintenance programs. A tree pro-ject, including pruning of existing trees on the course, removal of selected trees, and planting of new trees, is continuing at this time.

The soil greens at Bretton Woods are primarily bentgrass, with some poa annua. They are mowed at 5/32" four to five times weekly. The tees are mostly combinations of bentgrass and ryegrass, in varying proportions. There are some zoysia tees also. Tees are mowed at 5/8" twice a week. The fairways are ryegrass,

with some areas of bermuda and smaller patches of bentgrass. They are mowed at 3/4" three times weekly. Fertilizer appli-cations for these areas are at a moderate level, with most of the fertilizer applied in the fall.

Pesticide use is also at a moderate level. The crabgrass controls are Scott's Goosegrass/Crabgrass Control on greens and tees, and pendimethalin on fairways. A supplemental application of Betasan goes on the collars. Acclaim is used for post-emergent crabgrass control along the edges of fairways and ryegrass tees. Fungicide use includes weekly preventive applications of various materials on the greens, and biweekly applications on tees and fairways. There are monthly fungicide applications on the fairways during the summer for management of PhytTiium diseases. Oftanol and Triumph are used for control of white grubs, and Proxol is used for cutworm control on the greens. Poa annua is managed with Scotts TGR on the greens and collars, and Pro-grass on the fairways.

In 1970, Larry received a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Marietta College

Larry Ott, Superintendent

T f T O b T d . He~then worked ontfieTzrew at the Kittansett Club, a links type course near Cape Cod for five years. He returned to school at the University of Rhode Island and received a Bachelor's degree in Resource Management in 1976. After two years with a lawn service company, he was Asst. Manager and then Manager

of the Grounds Dept. at Gallaudet Uni-versity in the District of Columbia for a ten year period. Returning to golf course work at Bretton Woods meant an escape from the city, and an opportunity to concentrate on turfgrass management in a beautiful setting. Larry has been a mem-ber of the Mid-Atlantic Association since 1988. When he is not at the golf course, he relaxes by reading and/or adding to his book collection, following baseball, and observing the weather.

Larry notes that any description of Bretton Woods would be incomplete without mention of Gerry Gerard and the maintenance staff. Gerry was the Superin-tendent at Bretton Woods for twenty years, and is now the General Manager. Through his efforts, the facility evolved from bare soil to fine turf, and his assist-ance durfng the pasT year "Has been especially valuable. And although the maintenance staff — Wendell Lewis, Jim Barnes, Bill Beachley, Ray Finger, Earl Fox, Buddy Kinsey, Earl Stine, and Jerry Stine — is a small group, they form an example of reliable and capable golf course maintenance.
