Happy New Year From the Folks in the Javelina Athletic Department Track & Field Unit Receives Relay Award The 2014 Texas A&M- Kingsville sprint medley relay team was recognized as the best in NCAA Division II at the U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association convention last week in Phoenix, Ariz.. The best relay teams in each of the NCAA divisions were honored along with their coaches. Ryan Dall is the Javelina men’s and women’s head track and field coach and attended the convention in Phoenix. The Javelina relay had a time of 3:19.74 and running legs were: ….. Troy Jones Basketball Teams Return to Action Saturday Afternoon The Texas A&M-Kingsville men’s and women’s basketball teams will return to action Saturday when they host opponents in the Steinke Center. Both squads have been on a holiday break since Dec. 20. The Javelina women will take on Our Lady of the Lake at 1 p.m. and the men will meet Schreiner at 3 p.m. It will be the final pre- conference action for both programs. The Javelina women were 0-9 in their pre-holiday play. Micah Weaver, 5-9 sophomore guard from Poth, is the only player scoring in double figures. She hits 10.3 a game. Lauren Jay, 5-11 senior forward from San Antonio (Smithson Valley), is the top rebounder with a 6.1 average. Our Lady of the Lake had a Monday night game with Mary Hardin-Baylor and entered the contest with an 8-3 record. Courtney Bayless, 6-0 senior forward from Perth, Australia, leads the team in scoring with a 17.2 average and she pulls down 6.0 rebounds an outing. Sonji Green, 6-0 junior center from Fresno, Calif., averages 13.3 points a game and is the top rebounder with a 6.1 average. Taylor Hamilton, 5-3 junior guard from Fairfield, Calif., averages 12.5 points each game. The Javelina men are 4-7 and are led in scoring (14.4) and rebounding (7.5) by Troy Jones, 6- 7 junior forward from Alexandria, La. Four of the Javelinas are averaging in double figures. The Texas A&M-Kingsvillemen’s and women’s basketballteams will return to actionSaturday when they hostopponents in the Steinke Center.

WITH THE ANNOUNCING of the new Javelina head footballcoach, a lot of excitement has been created among the Javelinafans. There’s lots of talk about the 2015 season despite the firstgame being 244 days away.

The schedule also has the fans buzzing. The first game withIncarnate Word in San Antonio has always been popular with theJavelinas. Having a road game just over two hours away is a rarityfor the Blue and Gold faithful.

The Javelinas have had as many as 4,000 supporters in thestands for the UIW games in San Antonio.

After the UIW trip, the Javelinas play three consecutive gamesin Javelina Stadium.

ROBERTO GARZA SIGNED a one-year contract extensionwith the Chicago Bears last week.

The former Javelina is the starting center for the club.He has been in the NFL for 14 seasons and 10 of those have

been in Chicago.Garza was originally signed by the Atlanta Falcons after being

drafted in the fourth round in 2001.Phil Emery, general manager of the Bears, said, “Extremely

happy for Roberto, his family and the Chicago Bears that Robertowill remain with the team. He has been a consistently good positiveproducer and key contributor to our offensive line for an extendedtime period along with being a leader and role model to everyone onour team and in the greater Chicago community.”

Garza, 35, is the longest tenured member of the Chicagooffense and had missed only two games prior to this season. Hewas out four games this year with an ankle injury.

Garza and his wife, the former Ashley Golden, a Javelina crosscountry and volleyball athlete while an undergraduate, have beencommunity leaders in Atlanta and Chicago. He has held a footballcamp for Hispanic boys and girls and he and Ashley have providedmonetary donations to the Empty Stocking Fund and the FalconsFeed the Homeless campaign.

He has been on offensive lines that have blocked for seven1,000-yard rushers.

Garza has been a team captain for the past three seasons.Garza was one of the most honored college athletes ever while

with the Javelinas. He was on 15 All-America first teams in footballand track and field.

Junior forward Troy Jones is hitting .660 from the field andthat has him in the Lone Star Conference lead. It ranks as the 15th

best percentage in NCAA Division II.Jones is fourth in the LSC in rebounding with his 7.5 average.The Javelinas have the two top free-throw shooters in the

conference.Junior guard D.J. Weathers is the lead with a .913 percentage

and senior forward Jordan Jahr is second with an .865 percentage.Weathers’ figure is 15th in Division II.

THE NCAA DIVISION II national football championship gamein Kansas City, Kan., had a listed attendance of 6,762.

The temperature was 43 degrees and it was partly sunny atgame time.

This was the first year for the title contest to be held inSporting Park and it will be at the site for several years into thefuture.

THE CORPUS CHRISTI newspaper had a story last weekabout Lynn Frazier and his erecting a ferris wheel near his Fajitavillerestaurant on North Beach.

Frazier is attempting to bring the area back to its old days whenit was a popular gathering place for area residents and tourists.

Lynn is a former Javelina football player from Port Lavaca(Calhoun).

DEFENSIVE END DARIUS Allen of national championColorado State-Pueblo was named the recipient of the 2014 CliffHarris Award, which goes to the nation’s top college divisiondefensive player.

He was chosen from a group of more than 5,000 defensiveplayers representing 500 NCAA Division II and Division III andNAIA schools.

This is the second year for the award, which is named for theformer defensive back at Division II Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) and forthe Dallas Cowboys.

Javelina safety Trevor Pesek was a finalist for the award.Pesek, who received his master’s degree from TAMUK earlier

this month, led the Javelinas defensively this season with 95tackles.

Allen will receive his award at a banquet in Little Rock, Ark., inFebruary.

He has been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach atNevada-Las Vegas.

Rosenbach has coached at Washington State, Eastern Washington,St. Ambrose (Iowa) and with the British Columbia Lions of theCanadian Football League.

The Javelinas will take onthree opponents, all from theGreat American Conference, in themeet.

Eight schools will be enteredin the competition: Arkansas-Monticello, Nebraska-Kearney,Ouachita Baptist (Ark.), Pittsburg(Kan.) State, Southern Arkansas,Southwestern Oklahoma, TexasA&M-Kingsville and West TexasA&M.

The Javelinas will take onOuachita Baptist at 1 p.m. Feb. 5,Southwestern Oklahoma at 1 p.m.Feb. 6 and Southern ArkansasFeb. 7 at 4 p.m.

UAM, OBU, SouthernArkansas and SouthwesternOklahoma are in the GAC.Nebraska-Kearney and PittsburgState are in the Mid-AmericaIntercollegiate AthleticAssociation. The Javelinas andWest Texas represent the LoneStar Conference.

Baseball Opens in Grand Prairie

Extends ContractRoberto Garza,former Javelinafootball player andtrack and fieldathlete, signed aone-year extensionto his contract withthe Chicago Bearslast week.

Washington State and he is married to former professional volleyballplayer Kim Exner.

…..Quincy (Ill.) University plans to renovate its football andbaseball facilities with a $4 million investment by a California-baseddeveloper of facilities for colleges and universities.

The renovations will begin immediately and are scheduled to becompleted by next fall.

Dr. Robert Gervasi, president at Quincy, said the improvedfacilities will benefit not only the players on the field but also theuniversity as a whole as well as the entire Quincy region.

“QU prides itself in excellence in education and in all aspects,”Gervasi said. “Therefore, we must be competitive in attractingstudent-athletes. The expansion of QU athletics will increaseoverall enrollment, creating a more vibrant campus experience. Weenvision QU stadium to be a destination for large scale eventsappealing to the entire Quincy region.”

The school plans to recruit 90-100 more student-athletes byexpanded football and baseball rosters and with the addition ofmen’s and women’s lacrosse teams.

The renovations include synthetic turf surfaces for football andbaseball. The football field will get new bleachers, luxury suites, anew press box, new locker rooms, coaches’ offices, meetingrooms and training facilities.

…..Michael Morand has been named the head football coach atSt. Augustine’s (N.C.).

He has served as interim coach since the second game of the2014 season, and he becomes only the second coach at the schoolsince football was returned to the program in 2002.

Morand is a native of Atlanta, Ga., and played collegiate footballat Florida A&M.

He has college coaching experience at North Carolina A&T,Virginia State, Wingate (N.C.), Barber-Scotia (N.C.), Livingstone(N.C.) and West Georgia.

Morand holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida A&M and amaster’s from Nova Southeastern (Fla.).

Volleyball Coach Allen Signs Contract ExtensionTanya Allen, who has been

the head volleyball coach at TexasA&M-Kingsville for the past fourseasons, has been given a two-year contract extension.

Her team had an 18-13 recordlast season and reached the LoneStar Conference postseasonplayoffs.

“I am honored and privilegedto have the opportunity tocontinue to lead the Javelina

volleyball program and hopefullybring a Lone Star Conferencechampionship to Javelina Nation,”Allen said.

“Losing the senior class ishuge but we have a lot ofreturnees that were vital to oursuccess this season.”

Allen came to TAMUK afterthree seasons at Frank PhillipsCollege where she was a three-time Western Junior College

Athletic Conference coach of theyear.

She was the NJCAA districtcoach of the year twice and wasnamed a 30 Under 30 Awardrecipient by the AmericanVolleyball Coaches Association in2011.

Allen had been an assistantcoach at Frank Phillips a yearbefore taking over the head spot.

She played at New Mexico

State where the team went 113-19in her four years with the club.

A native of Deming, N.M., sheholds a bachelor’s degree fromNew Mexico State and has amaster’s degree from WesternNew Mexico.

2014 Javelina Athletic Department Highlights

Community ProjectJavelina athletes trim a hedge during one of the numerous community projects performed in 2014. Javelinaathletics has received numerous awards for their work in the communities.

National championships, LoneStar Conference titles andnumerous team and individualhonors highlighted the 2014 sportsyear for the Texas A&M-KingsvilleJavelinas.

Following are highlights of theyear:

JAVELINA BASEBALLPLAYERS Taylor Taska and DallasPonder were on the NCAA DivisionII preseason All-America teamselected by Collegiate BaseballNewspaper.

Taska, from Houston(Woodland), was named as adesignated hitter and Ponder, fromFlatonia, was a starting pitcher.

The Javelinas also had a playeron the “newcomers to watch” list.

Derrick Walls, senior shortstopfrom San Antonio (Reagan), was atransfer from Incarnate Word.

JAVELINA FIRST BASEMANand pitcher Taylor Taska wasrecognized at the South TexasWinter Baseball Banquet in CorpusChristi.

Taska, senior from Houston(Woodlands), was a first-team All-American last spring and washonored as the Javelinas’ mostvaluable player in 2013.

He received numerousnational, regional and Lone StarConference honors and helped theJavelinas capture the LSCtournament championship andreach the championship game of theNCAA Division II South CentralRegion playoffs.

Nolan Ryan was the featuredspeaker at the banquet. TheJavelina home baseball stadium isnamed for Ryan.

Hector Salinas, the Javelinas’first baseball coach when theintercollegiate program started in1993, received a lifetimeachievement award at the event.

He is a member of the JavelinaHall of Fame and during his sixyears as head coach of the squad,the Javelinas won two LSC titles.

The Mike Adams professionalplayer of the year honoree was

Jordan John, son of former JavelinaAll-American football player BillyJohn.

The award is named for theformer Javelina pitcher who is amember of the Javelina Hall of Fameand now pitches for thePhiladelphia Phillies.

GARY ZACKER, WHO hadserved as Coordinator of AlumniDevelopment for the JavelinaAlumni Association, was named thenew Annual Giving and Game-DayPromotions Coordinator in theathletic department.

Zacher is a native of CorpusChristi and attended IncarnateWord Academy.

He received his bachelor ofscience degree in mathematics andmaster of business administrationdegree in management fromWayland Baptist University.

After graduating, he wasCoordinator of General Accounts atWayland and then becomeAssistant to the Executive Directorof Institutional Advancement at the

institution.Zacher took the position at

TAMUK in July.TEN MEMBERS OF the

Javelina men’s and women’s indoortrack and field team were named to12 positions on the NCAA DivisionII All-South Central Region team.

The squad was selected bythe U.S. Track & Field CoachesAssociation.

Tim Price, junior from CorpusChristi (Carroll), and C.J. Griggs,senior from Van Vleck, were on theteam twice.

Price made the squad in the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes andGriggs made the lineup in the longand triple jump.

Javan Gray, sophomore fromSpringfield,Ore., was on the team asa shot putter; Jeron Robinson,junior from Houston (Travis), wasnamed as a high jumper; JordanYamoah, sophomore from Arlington,N.Y., was on the team as a polevaulter.

2014 Javelina Athletic Department Highlights

They Are the ChampionsThe Javelina baseball team captured the Lone Star Conference championship last spring and ended the season ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division II.

Jeron Robinson, junior fromHouston (Travis), tied for first inthe high jump but lost thetiebreaker and got the silvermedal.

He cleared 7-1.Robinson was the defending

champion indoors and won lastyear’s outdoor title.

Tim Price, junior from CorpusChristi (Carroll), finished third inthe 200-meter dash with a time of21.38.

Michal Idziak, sophomorefrom Mosina, Poland, was sixth inthe 800-meter run with a time of1:53.07.

Javan Gray, sophomore fromSpringfield, Ore., finished 16th inthe shot put with a throw of 52-8.75.

Shykilia Sheppard, juniorfrom Houston (Reagan), competedin the long jump and was 14th witha jump of 17-11.

Amber Perry, junior fromGoliad, ran in the 400-meter dashpreliminaries and didn’t qualify forthe finals.

PETE PETERSON,JAVELINA men’s head basketballcoach for the past 17 seasons,

announced his retirement.His tenure is the longest in

school history.Peterson was twice named

Lone Star Conference coach of theyear and two of his teamsadvanced into the NCAA DivisionII national playoffs. The Javelinashave been in the LSC postseasontournament 11 times.

Peterson had his playersinvolved in numerous communityprojects.

His “Live the Dream” projectbrought more than 2,500 juniorhigh school students to theSteinke Center to watch theJavelina teams play and toexperience a college atmosphere.

JAVELINA HIGH JUMPERJeron Robinson was named theNCAA Division II national fieldathlete of the week after his 7-6height in the IBC Bank CactusCup meet in Javelina Stadium.

Robinson, junior fromHouston (Travis), became the firstoutdoor field athlete to receive therecognition this season.

His height is the best for aDivision II jumper since 2007when Jim Dilling of MinnesotaState cleared 7-6.50 at the DrakeRelays.

Robinson has been one ofthe nation’s top jumper sincejoining the Javelina squad lastyear.

He won the 2013 NCAADivision II indoor and outdoornational championships and tiedfor the best height at this year’sindoor meet. He was awarded thesilver medal after losing atiebreaker.

TWO TAMUK STUDENTtrainers were recognized by theLone Star Conferenceas AthleticTraining Student Academic Awardrecipients.

The Javelinas are RachelLockett, junior from Manvell, andYoshio Villarreal, sophomore fromLaJoya.

Both are health andkinesiology majors.

To be eligible for the honor, astudent must have at least a 3.3grade point average with aminimum of 24 semester hours.

MARIAXI HERRERA,SOPHOMORE tennis player, wasnamed to the Lone StarConference all-academic team.

She was one of six players onthe squad.

Herrera, the Javelinas’ No. 1singles player and a member of thetop doubles team, is a financemajor from Ecuador.

To be eligible for LSCacademic honors, athletes musthave at least a 3.3 grade pointaverage and be at least asophomore academically.

THE JAVELINA MEN’S trackand field team captured the LoneStar Conference championship inJavelina Stadium.

The Javelina menj scored 175points to beat out defendingchampion Angelo State, whichhad 153.

Texas A&M-Commerce wasthird with 114, indoor championWest Texas A&M and TarletonState tied for fourth with 109,Harding was sixth with 76,McMurry finished seventh with 43and Eastern New Mexico had 39.

The Javelina women finishedfourth with 92 points.

Defending champion AngeloState repeated with 182 points,indoor champion West TexasA&M had 161, Tarleton was thirdwith 122, McMurry was fifth with67 points, Harding finished sixthwith 52.5 points, Eastern NewMexico had 50, Texas A&M-Commerce scored 43 andMidwestern State had 41.

Sergio Rios, senior fromBrownsville (Pace), was a doublewinner, taking the 110-meter and400-meter hurdle championships.

Kaina Martinez, junior fromBelize, was a double winner,winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dash titles.

Habitat for HumanityMembers of the Javelina football team took part in a Habitat forHumanity project in Alice.

He set a single-game recordwith nine three-point goals in the1996 tournament and also set aschool season record with 88steals the same season. Estelle had 742 points in histwo seasons as a Javelina, had 214rebounds, 211 assists and 138steals. He remained with theTAMUK program for one seasonas a student assistant and thenserved as a graduate assistant forone year under head coach PetePeterson. The new Javelina headcoach spent a season as anassistant coach at NorthlandPioneer College where he hadplayed two seasons before joiningthe Javelinas.

He spent 13 seasons atNavarro College and was the headcoach for five years. Estelle had a 126-48 record ashead coach at Navarro, averagingmore than 25 victories a season.His clubs were 13-2 in NJCAARegion XIV tournament games. Navarro went to the NJCAAnational tournament three timesand it reached the Final Four in2010. Estelle was district coach ofthe year three times and he was

selected to be a court coach withthe USA Olympic U19 team in2009. Ninety percent of his playersgraduated and his 2010 teamreceived NJCAA all-academicteam honors with a 3.01 teamgrade point average, seventh bestin the nation. Twenty-two of his playerswent on to play at NCAA DivisionI programs and 100 percent playedat four-year schools. Estelle was an assistant at theUniversity of Houston in 2013-14under head coach James Dickey.

WADE SCOTT, WHO hasbeen at the University of Houstonsince 2006, was named the headwomen’s basketball coach atTexas A&M-Kingsville.

Scott is familiar with the LoneStar Conference, having played atEastern New Mexico.

He holds a bachelor ofscience degree from ENMU.

Scott has 20 years of collegecoaching for men’s and women’steams, and at the junior collegeand four-year level.

Since 2010, he has beenassociate head coach for theHouston women. In 2009-10, theteam finished second inConference USA and went to theWomen’s National InvitationTournament with Scott as theinterim head coach.

This year, he was the interimhead coach as the Cougars

competed in the American AthleticConference.

Scott was instrumental in theCougars dominating theConference USA in 2010-11, goingundefeated with a 16-0 record.

The squad went to theNCAA tournament and finishedwith a 26-6 record.

Prior to his tenure atHouston, he coached in the juniorcollege ranks, including nineseasons as head coach of men’sand women’s teams in Texas, NewMexico and Oklahoma.

He began his coaching careerat New Mexico Military Institutein 1993-94.

After a season in highschool, he went to WesternOklahoma State in 1995. In his fiveseasons as head coach, he led themen’s team to three NJCAAregional tournaments.

He became the head women’scoach at Clarendon College in2001 and the school went to theNJCAA regional tournament in hisfirst season.

Scott next went to GraysonCounty Community College wherehis team reached the NJCAAregionals in 2005.

The new Javelina coach wasan assistant men’s coach atTrinity Valley Community coach in2005-06 before joining theHouston staff in 2006.

MARIA HERRERA ANDMarija Dimitrovska were named tothe All-Lone Star Conferencewomen’s tennis team announcedlast week.

Herrera, sophomore fromIbarra, Ecuador, was on the all-league roster in singles and doublesand Dimitrovska, sophomore fromSkopje, Macedonia, was on the all-doubles team as a partner ofHerrera.

The Javelinas defeatedseveral nationally ranked singlesand doubles players during thepast season.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE ZANEBrown was named to the 2014National Football FoundationHampshire Honor Society.

It is comprised of college

football players from all divisionswho have maintained a cumulativegrade point average of 3.2 orbetter throughout their collegecareers.

Brown, 6-0, 296-pound seniorfrom Houston (Travis), receivednumerous academic honors duringhis career with the Javelinas alongwith recognition for his play.

The Fred and Joan NueschAward goes to a student in thesports information office whopreferably is a journalism or masscommunications major with plansto become a sports journalist. Itwas established at the time of FredNuesch’s retirement from theUniversity after 35 years as theathletic department’s athleticmedia relations director.

The June DotterweichSportswoman of the Year Awardwas established by Dr. Frank

Dotterweich in memory of his wife,June and the recipient is a femaleathlete who has been outstandingin the classroom and in athletics.

THE LONE STARConference champion TexasA&M-Kingsville men’s track andfield team led the All-LSCselections with nine.

To be eligible for the All-LSCteam, an athlete must score atleast 14 points or win an event atthe LSC Championships.

The team is selected by theLSC head track and field coaches.

The Javelina men led in theall-league selections with theirnine. Runnerup Angelo State hadfive; Texas A&M-Commerce three;West Texas A&M, Tarleton Stateand Eastern New Mexico twoeach, and McMurry and Hardingone each.

They were announced at theLSC baseball tournament banquetin Kingsville.

JAVELINA PITCHER DenverDiefenbach was named the LoneStar Conference academic playerof the year.

Diefenbach is a senior fromVictoria (St. Joseph).

He joined teammate DallasPonder, senior pitcher fromFlatonia, on the LSC all-academicsquad.

The nine honorees had tohave at least a 3.3 grade pointaverage and be at leastsophomores.

The LSC sports informationdirectors select the players on thesquad from the nominees.

Diefenbach had a 9-3 recordduring the regular-season and hada 3.10 earned run average.

He and Ponder helped theJavelina pitching corps lead theconference pitching statistics, andwere instrumental in the Javelinascapturing the LSC championship.

INFIELDER DERRICKWALLS was named to the LoneStar Conference all-tournamentteam at the conclusion of the meetat Nolan Ryan Field.Walls, senior from San Antonio(Reagan), went four for eight(.500) in the Javelinas’ twotournament games.One of his hits was a double andhe had a run batted in and scoredthree times.

Ryan Dall, men’s andwomen’s indoor and outdoor trackand field coach, was named the2014 NCAA Division II SouthCentral Region men’s track andfield coach of the year.

Dall was selected by theDivision II coaches in the region.

His men’s team won the LoneStar Conference outdoorchampionship this spring, the firsttime a Javelina squad has taken aleague track and field title since1970.

Dall, in his sixth season ashead coach of the Javelinas, hascoached numerous All-Americansand several athletes who haveranked among the best in thecollegiate ranks and the world.

Dall was recently named theLSC men’s track and field coach ofthe year.

He has 18 individuals and tworelay teams qualified for theNCAA Division II Championshipsthis week in Allendale, Mich.

ALL-AMERICAN HIGHjumper Jeron Robinson wasnamed the NCAA Division IISouth Central Region outdoortrack and field men’s field athleteof the year by the U.S. Track &Field Coaches Association.

Robinson, sophomore fromHouston (Travis), had cleared 7-6at the time of the honor, the 10th

best height in the world and thebest in Division II.

Robinson has been an indoorand outdoor All-American in eachof his seasons with the Javelinas.

He is the Lone StarConference champion this season.

The regional athletes of theyear are chosen by the Division IIcoaches.

FOR THE SECONDconsecutive season, the baseballteam battled its way into thechampionship game of the NCAADivision II South Central Regiontournament before losing by a runin the “if necessary” matchup.

The Javelinas beat host andtop-seeded Colorado-Mesa, 9-8, inthe opening game of thechampionship round, forcing the“if necessary” contest.

The Javelinas scored twice inthe top of the ninth inning in thetitle clash but fell a run short asthe Mavericks took a 7-6 decisionto gain the regional trophy.

The victory for the Javelinas inthe first game spoiled a perfect homeseason for the Mavericks, who

Live the DreamThe Live the Dream basketball games in the Steinke Center attracted 2,500 elementary and middle schoolstudents from throughout the area. It received a national commendation from the NCAA and is one of thefinalists for a national award.

West Texas A&M downedthe Javelinas, 17-3, on the secondday of the meet, knocking the clubinto the consolation bracket.

The Javelinas fought back todefeat Tarleton State, 8-6, andWest Texas, 7-4, in back-to-backgames Saturday night.

That gave the South Texans aspot in the championship roundwith Mesa.

Shortstop Derrick Walls,senior from San Antonio (Reagan),had a career tournament, hitting.583 with 14 hits on 24 trips to theplate.

He scored 10 times and had apair of doubles.

Taylor Taska, senior firstbaseman and pitcher from Houston(Kingwood), hit .409 with nine hitson 22 trips. He had 11 runs battedin and scored six times.

Taska had five extra base hits,two home runs and three doubles.

Brian Frazier, senior outfielderand designated hitter fromHouston (Kingwood), hit .360 withnine hits in 25 appearances at theplate. He had eight RBIs andscored three times. He had ahome run and two doubles.

Matt Perez, senior secondbaseman from Stevensville, Mont.,had four doubles in the meet;Miles Holcomb, sophomorepitcher and outfielder fromDripping Springs, had two homeruns and a double and ClintWallace, junior catcher fromCorpus Christi (Tuloso-Midway)had a pair of home runs.

THREE MEMBERS OF thebaseball team were named to theNCAA Division II South CentralRegion all-tournament team.

Making the squad were BrianFrazier, senior outfielder anddesignated hitter from Houston(Kingwood); Taylor Taska, seniorfirst baseman and pitcher fromHouston (Kingwood), and DerrickWalls, senior shortstop from SanAntonio (Reagan).

Frazier hit .360 in the sixplayoff games and had twodoubles and a home run. He hadeight runs batted in and scoredthree times.

Taska hit .409 and had 11RBIs. He scored six times and hadtwo home runs and three doubles.

Walls had a .583 average atthe plate and scored 10 times. Hehad two doubles.

The all-tournament team wasselected by members of the mediaattending the event.

INFIELDER DERRICKWALLS, first baseman andpitcher Taylor Taska and reliefpitcher Ryan Scott were named to

the NCAA Division II All-SouthCentral Region first team.

Walls, senior from San Antonio(Reagan), had a .370 batting averagewith 22 runs batted in.

He was earlier named the LoneStar Conference player of the yearand first team LSC all-tournament.

Taska, senior from Houston(Kingwood), has a .346 battingaverage and has 41 runs batted in.

On the mound, he has a 2-1record with a 2.31 ERA. He hasone save.

Scott, junior from Sanger, has11 saves for the year and has a2.37 earned run average.

On the second unit wereJavelinas Dallas Ponder, seniorpitcher from Flatonia, and DenverDiefenbach, senior pitcher fromVictoria (St. Joseph).

WIDE RECEIVER ROBERTArmstrong signed a free agentcontract with the Dallas Cowboysshortly after the end of the recentNFL draft.

Armstrong, 6-2, 200 fromCuero, reported to the Cowboycamp for a rookie mini-camp afterthe signing.

He holds the Javelina careerrecords for most receptions (229)and touchdown catches (33). Hehas the season record for mostreceptions (67).

Armstrong had 66 receptions

for 762 yards and eighttouchdowns last season, missinghis own single-season record forcatches by one.

One of Armstrong’s bestsingle-game performances came inthe Cowboys’ stadium last fall. Hehad 18 receptions for 177 yards andfour touchdowns, but they didn’tcount in the statistics or recordsbecause they came againstMonterrey Tech of Mexico.

The NCAA doesn’t recognizestatistics against internationalopponents unless they aremembers of the NCAA.

THE MEN’S TRACK and fieldteam had an outstanding NCAADivision II outdoor meet.

The Javelnas finished fourthamong the 60 teams participating,had the top scorer in the men’sdivision of the meet, a Javelinatied a national record and theJavelinas had nine athletes earn 11All-America spots.

The Javelinas scored 49points for their highest finish in anational meet since the 1969squad placed fourth in the NAIAnational meet in Billings, Mont.

Javelina sprinter Tim Price,junior from Corpus Christi(Carroll), was the top scorer in themen’s division with 20.75 points.

He established himself as thefastest man in Division II by

sweeping the 100-meter and 200-meter gold medals.

Price also ran a leg on thesixth-place 400-meter relay team.

Price had two of the Javelinas’three gold-medal performances atnationals.

Jeron Robinson, junior fromHouston (Travis), tied the nationalrecord in winning the high jumpwith a 7-6.5 clearance.

It was the second consecutiveoutdoor title for Robinson, who isone of the top-ranked jumpers inall college divisions.

Defending pole vaultchampion Jordan Yamoah,sophomore from Arlington, N.Y.,tied for first place but got thesilver medal after losing a tie-breaker.

C.J. Griggs, senior from VanVleck, was the defendingchampion in the triple jump buthad to withdraw after thepreliminaries because of an injurythat has plagued him throughoutthe season.

Price was a three-time All-American at the meet, in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes andas a member of the relay unit.
