THE STORMS THAT hit Texas after Christmas played havocwith the Javelina men’s and women’s basketball teams’ schedules.

Both had to delay the start of their postseason workouts whenplayers and coaches were stranded at various sites.

Two of the women’s players spent the night in DFW Airport inDallas. Another was unable to get out of Lubbock.

Several of the Javelina coaches had similar problems gettingback to South Texas.

HAD A GREAT Javelina reunion at one of the KingsvilleWhataburgers Dec. 27.

Joan and I always go there on our anniversary, and this yearwas no exception.

Someone walked in who looked a lot like Ed LaToufEd’s job currently has him working in Singapore and the last

person I expected to see in a Whataburger in Kingsville two daysafter Christmas was Ed and his family.

Sure enough, it was Ed with his wife, Terry, former Javelinacheerleader, and their two daughters.

We had a great visit and it was good to hear that he could bereturning to Houston in 2016.

A former Javelina football player and member of the JavelinaHall of Fame, LaTouf has been a big Javelina booster since finishinghis career in the late 1980s.

IT HAS ALWAYS been said that things are bigger, and better,in Texas.

A good example of this would be the city of Allen. When I was working in Paris (Texas) in the mid-1960s, Allen

was a wide place in the road when you drove from Paris to Dallas, going the northern route.

The population of the town was 1,940 in 1970 and in the mid-1960s, it was less than that.

Today, the population is nearing, if not already, 100,000.It was 84,000 in the 2010 census. The Allen High School band marched in the Rose Bowl parade

last week and it was the largest band to ever take part in the event. There were 800 marchers.

A few years ago, a new football stadium for the Allen highschool team was opened with national attention. It cost $60million and had a seating capacity of 18,000.

Checking the school’s website, the other athletic facilities—including an indoor football practice field and a natatorium—at theschool are similarly impressive. They would compare to many ofthe best college facilities.

The Lone Star Conference has moved to Allen for its annualmen’s and women’s basketball tournaments. The meet is held eachMarch in the Allen Events Center, a state-of-the-art building with acapacity of 8,000.

The center is the home of ice hockey, indoor football andsoccer franchises.

It opened in 2009 with a Reba McEntire concert. This year’s LSC Championships are set for March 2-5.
