7 Tammuz — 9 Elul 5777 July/August 2017

Friends, It is my great honor to write my very first bulletin article as your president. Thank you for the confidence you have shown in me. Your expectations are high, especially since I follow in the footsteps of other incredible presidents, and I promise to rise to the occasion and give my very best to you for the coming year and beyond.

CBT became my Jewish home in the summer of 1977. I have experienced every Jewish milestone with my CBT family since then: my Bat Mitzvah, confirmation, wedding (to another CBT kid) and religious education of my children including their b’nai mitzvah and confirmations, and so on. As many of you know, my mother was CBT’s office manager for several years when we were still occupying the church on Bushard St. and my father blew the shofar during the High Holy Days. Both were involved with committees or board work and they set the example that volunteering at CBT is everyone’s responsibility. Over the past 15 years, it has been my pleasure serving in many roles, including several committees, Sisterhood president, co-chair of three major fundraisers and a board member for six years prior to becoming CBT’s president. I have enjoyed participating in the growth and development of our congregation, and this new role will test me in an entirely new way going forward. I have long suspected that I would find myself here. I place a very high value on volunteering, and want to create opportunities for all congregants to volunteer in those areas of synagogue life for which they have passion and want to make an impact. You can count on hearing more about this in the months to come. I’d like to leave you with some fascinating facts about your new 2017-2018 Board of Trustees and the staff of CBT:

1. All members of the incoming executive committee (officers of the board), plus Rabbi Young, Cantorial Soloist Jenna Sagan, Educational Director April Akiva, and the office staff, are all under 50 years old. Let that sink in. In fact, I am the very oldest one of them (that one hasn’t sunk in yet for me). I am extremely proud that members of this generation are stepping forward to lead and help each other make important decisions about CBT’s future.

2. The 15 members of your full Board of Trustees represent seven decades of membership. SEVEN! We have trustees in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. To me, this means that our members are well-represented and that we have the benefit of their varied points of view.

All of us are part of a very special partnership and I am excited about the work we will be doing together to enrich our synagogue. L’shalom, Shellie Halprin

If you are trying to sell property, the emphasis is usually location, location, location. If you are trying to expand Brotherhood, the emphasis is “programs, programs, programs,” says new Brotherhood President, Greg Halprin. Even before he officially took office July 1, Greg distributed program proposals for review and action, and also solicited ideas for events and volunteers to chair them. Corresponding Secretary Gary Miller lost no time in setting up congregational participation at the free Queens Tribute Concert, 6:00 PM on July 20, to be held at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley at the corner of Brookhurst and Edinger. Entrance to the stage area is from Heil Avenue off of Brookhurst, south of Edinger. A space will be saved near the stage for those who would like to eat and schmooze with congregation members at 5:00 PM. Those attending may bring a picnic or buy food from vendors. Blankets and lawn chairs are also advised. Past President Harris Stutman was way ahead of Greg with plans for his 13th annual Angels Baseball outing Aug. 3 when the Angels will play the Philadelphia Phillies. Harris reports all 50 tickets were sold but interested persons may call to see if anyone has had to cancel. A drawing was held in June for those who had purchased tickets. Bill and Carole Collen won a free parking pass to Angel Stadium in Anaheim while Susan and Mike Kibel won free passes to a future ball game. Brotherhood dues of $40 for the coming year are due at the July 9 board meeting in the Social Hall. On Sept. 6 at 6:00 PM, all paid up members are offered free pizza and beverages at Round Table Pizza, Euclid at Warner in Fountain Valley. Non members may join at that time. New CBT members are given a free membership in the Brotherhood the first year. New events being planned include: a tour of California Faucets in Huntington Beach, owned by CBT member Fred Silverstein; a bowling night; Super Bowl watching party; a museum trip to Los Angeles; a Jewish movie night; a Jewish speaker program; a poker tournament; and, for the community, packing lunches for the homeless for Beach Cities Interfaith Services. All this and more will be offered along with Brotherhood's traditional programs such as the Dec. 24 movie night, a date night, and a Men's Seder, which “deals with men's issues and is not connected to Passover,” Greg said. Brotherhood service to CBT will continue with ushers for Friday night and holiday services, distributing apples and water to break the Yom Kippur fast, Bagels Under the Sukkah with Rabbi Young, helping Mike Haber erect and later take down the Sukkah, and barbecuing for congregational events. Greg calls for all our events to be publicized as much as possible, such as on fliers, in the Weekly Shabbat announcements, on the TV monitor in the lobby, online, and in the monthly bulletin. SPONSORING AN ONEG IS EASY !

Have you wanted to sponsor an Oneg, but were not sure what to do or how much it would cost? It’s easy! You can be a sponsor for

$270. This represents the actual cost of the Oneg. This covers food, setup, and cleanup, and your name will be listed as the Oneg sponsor

in the Shabbat Announcement. CBT will handle all of the details. All you have to do is show up and enjoy! Furthermore, because you pay

CBT, the $270 is tax deductible. It’s a win-win!

You can also honor the memory of loved ones or celebrate simchas by making contributions to the Oneg Fund. This will help ensure

funds are available to cover costs in the event an Oneg is unsponsored.

Ladies of CBT Sisterhood,

It has been a pleasure serving as your Sisterhood President this past year. We are growing, and we look forward to even

more new members this coming year. We would be remiss if we did not say thank you to everyone who helped make this

past year such a success. That includes Brotherhood, which co-hosted a baby shower for Jenna and Sean Sagan in May, and

the ladies who helped set up, serve and clean up at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen in Costa Mesa in June.

From Sushi and Saki in the Sukkah to Quartermania, it’s been an exciting year full of activities, social action and

camaraderie, with fundraising along the way. We’ve had excellent participation, and we’re looking forward to another

outstanding year in 2017-2018.

Let’s go to the show. Our first event of the year will be a theater outing. The play is WaistWatchers the Musical at

Huntington Beach Library. We’re attending the 2:00 PM show on Sunday, July 9. The cost is $45. RSVP to Cindy Hirsch at

[email protected].

Mah Jongg Tournament. We’re hosting a Mah Jongg tournament on July 11. Contact Heather Miller at

[email protected] or (714) 814-2789.

Membership. It’s time to renew your membership. Watch your mailbox for the membership mailing, and please pay your

dues by July 30. If you want to save a stamp, you can drop your dues in the mailbox attached to the Judaica Shop door.

Paid-Up Membership Tea. Everyone who pays her dues by the deadline is eligible to attend the annual paid-up

membership appreciation event in September. Look for more details to come.

Take an active role. We would love to expand our board and have more ideas and input for programming and other

areas. Sisterhood ballots for officers will be coming out soon – we'd love to add your name! Contact Brandi Cohen at (714)

614-5006 or email [email protected].
