The year is flying by and I’m only just be-ginning to understand the job. Of course, also doing the Spiel and coordinating socialevents has detracted from “big picture”ideas. But help has arrived! Laura Shieldshas volunteered to be our Social Chair and Travis Young is going to take on the Spiel. Both will be phasing into their “jobs” in the coming months. Thanks to both for coming forward to help improve our club. This good news has made it possible for me to volunteer foranother year as President. A slate for 2010 is forthcomingfrom the Nominating Committee to the Board of Directors onOct. 20th and voting will be held at our November meeting atPorsche of Orlando.

October hopefully brings some cooler weather but also the 2exciting track events, OctoberFast at Daytona Oct. 9-11 andour fall DE Oct. 17,18 at Roebling Road. Bert Del Villanoand Dave Borinski, respectively, are leading the annualevents which should be fun to participate in or just attend.See page 1 for more info.

Our final 2 major events are the annual Challenge Rally onNov. 15 to benefit the Russell Home and our Holiday/Anniv. party Dec. 6 at the downtown Marriott. Bill Davis is takingapps (page 8) for the Rally and Cindy Anderson, MeredithMcWaters and the Peebles are working the Dec. event.Lots of activities. Hope to see you there!

Journey to the 2009 East Coast Holiday – by

John Reker

The challenging part was finishing the car in time. We (John andJan) started restoration a year ago after returning from the 2008 East Coast Holiday (356 Registry version of Parade) in Lancaster, PA. I got the car back from Sid Collins, who had refurbished the engine, with less than a week until we had to leave. I needed to swap steering wheels, install seat belts, test drive the car, wax it, etc. and finished up Sunday late. Monday was Labor Day so I rested a bit and packed my emergency repair kit and our clothes. We took off Tuesday morning and we were driving solo since no one else was going from Central Florida. The trip went well with no problems, although the vent window A/C was a lot less than desired.

Got to the French Lick, Indiana site Thursday morning to be in time for a Poker Rally at 1:00 PM. After chatting with some people we learned the rally was cancelled because they supposedly couldnot find several places for the cars to stop to pick out cards from a deck. Right--So we picked up a self guided tour sheet and did a run with two other cars. Really nice country roads with no one on them and fun, rolling hills. Friday was a variety of tech sessions and Lit/swap meet. Saturday was the Concours and there were about 200 cars on the hotel grounds and gardens. A perfect setting and perfect weather. The West Baden Springs Hotel (newlyrestored grand hotel and spa dating back to 1902) was everythingthey advertised and more (see photo in the atrium of the hotel taken from a fourth floor room). You can get a feel for the scale of the facility. We drove home solo (again) in two days and overall had no rain or mechanical problems the whole trip so we’re relaxing at long last. A photo finish. Total miles a bit over 2000.

Porsche Racing, Driver’s Ed, Autocross and Rally ALMS - American LeMans Series – articles excerpted from Jill Beck email.

After 8 rounds of ALMS racing, Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Long are leading the GT2 category driving their 911 RSR .The final race of the season, the Petite LeMans, will be held at Road Atlanta on Sept. 26th and is a 10 hour, 1000 mile race. Results for the season will be covered in the November issue of the Spiel.

GRAND-AM Rolex Series – articles excerpted from Jill Beck email.

Driver’s Education (DE) – the next DE is scheduled at Roebling Road Oct 17 and 18 - see page 1

Autocross – the next Autocross will be held in on Sunday, Oct 11 conjunction with OctoberFast (see page 1)

Club Member Racing – see page 1 for OctoberFast Club race at Daytona Oct 9 - 11

In their previous race, at Mosport, the two Porsche 911 GT3 RSR teams were involved in substantial track incidents. For the Long (USA) and Bergmeister (Germany) Flying Lizard Porsche, it was a three-way shunt caused by a prototype cutting off the BMW racer ahead of Patrick, causing the BMW to slam on the brakes unexpectedly, and the Lizard Porsche ploughed into the back of the BMW. The strength of the GT3 RSR chassis saved our day," said Long. The pair was unable to run with the Corvette/Ferrari fight for the race lead but finished a credible fifth place to retain their 31-point GT2 championship points lead over the Kaffer/MeloFerrari, which finished second. The winning Magnussen/O'Connell Corvette was the first win for their new GT2 effort, but they are not in the points chase. Porsche maintains a 140 - 107 lead over Ferrari in the manufacturers point.

MONTREAL - August 29 -- Despite dark and dreary wet weather conditions, Saturday was a good day for Porsche teams competing in the Montreal 200 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. Porsche works drivers Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Romain Dumas (France) finished second in their #12 Verizon Wireless Penske Porsche Rileyand narrowly missed their first victory of the season. Leh Keen (Charleston, SC) and Dirk Werner (Germany) missed the GT podium, finishing sixth in their #87 Farnbacher Loles Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, but padded their Acxiom GT championship points lead to 35 points, a full race's worth of points. The #58 Brumos Porsche Riley of David Donohue (Malvern, PA) and Darren Law (Phoenix, AZ) had a action-filled path to finish fifth. The other Brumos car, the #59 Porsche Riley started by JC France (Ormond Beach, FL), retired after just 11 laps, suffering rear damage after being hit from behind.

“Members in Competition” update from member Gary Meredith - “son Bryce and I just returned from the SCCA Solo II Nationals with some hardware. I was 4th and he ended up winning the National Championship in our class driving our BMW 328is. He beat the favorite, a 4-time National Champ who was picked by just about everyone to win this year as well. There were 42 drivers in our class (STX) and a total of 1150 participants, making it the largest motorsports event in the world. The event was held on a former SAC air base in Lincoln Nebraska”. Congratulations Gary and Bryce! (But a Bimmer?!).

From Sid Collins – “Our local vintage racers attended a VDCA event at Roebling Road 9-4/5/6-09. The weather was great for all those prepared to attend our upcoming DE” at Daytona. “John Cox & Robert Demetrius raced and represented our Citrus PCA club very well. Demetrius's 73 911RS was a solid 4th overall after a 1 hr. enduro. A good time was had by all who attended...”

In the last issue of the Spiel is was noted that Allen Burgess was critically hurt racing at Daytona. Since that time we regret to inform our members that he has passed away as a result of those injuries. Our heart and deepest regrets go to his family and those who knew him... Regards, Sid Collins

Rally – the Challenge Rally is scheduled for Sunday Nov. 15thThe Annual Challenge Rally is a charity fun-rally/scavenger hunt to benefit the Russell Home for Children. At the 2008 event, we raised over $4500.

You will be given the chance to drive your car through some of the best roads and unspoiled areas in N. Central Florida. Come join your fellow European car enthusiasts while raising money for Charity(Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Bentley, Lamborghini and Ferrari folks are being invited). There will be door prizes and awards for a variety of categories. This year’s event is hosted by your FL Citrus Porsche Club. We look forward to seeing all of you come out for this great event.Past events have been won by Porsche because we have had the most cars support this great charity. Last year however, BMWs edged out Porsches by one car! The challenge this year will be to not only continue our support of the Russell Home but again have the most cars at the rally! If you only do one event a year, this is the event to attend! We’re starting from Porsche of Orlando in Maitland.
