Volume 2 November/December 2011 J. Mark Parsons, Superintendent What an exciting time of the year! Deer season, Thanks- giving and Christmas are almost here. All of the Manton Family knows that you will create lifelong memories. A good thing at this time of the school year is the 3 rd through 9 th grades have taken the MEAP so they are good to go until next year. The H.S. juniors will be tested in March on the ACT and MME. Our teachers and staff work very hard to help our students grow academically and socially so they have all the skills necessary to be pre- pared for “the tests” and life after high school. Very soon you will be seeing and hearing a lot about the new way scores are figured for the MEAP and MME. Under the new scor- ing system, students will have to correctly answer a much higher per- centage of questions. While we anticipate an initial decline in the num- ber of students reported as “proficient,” we are confident this change will be temporary due to ongoing school improvement efforts and stu- dent support. The bottom line is this will lower scores. Over the past 3 years the teachers and administration have and will continue to work for 80% of our students to be at or above 80% on the MEAP and MME. We will not be satisfied until we reach that goal. When we meet that goal we will work for even better scores. We always appreciate and need the students’ families to support and encourage every child to do their best. Together we will meet the challenges set by the Michigan Department of Education and State Board of Education. Winter will be here soon so please make sure to look at this is- sue about the processes and notifications of school closings and delays. We try very hard to make the “call” between 5:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact your principals’ office or Central Office at 824-6411, option #5. The Manton 5th grade students attended an Outdoor Education Field Trip to Falmouth Dam. They were put into groups and visited each of the many learning "Stations" that were set up for them and other schools. Did you know that fish are considered to be "Piscivores," because they eat their own kind?

Fight Like a Girl They might be young, but they can make a differ-ence. The 7th and 8th grade volleyball team decided to dedi-cate one of their home games for Breast Cancer Awareness. The 8th grade team contacted Love Inc of Cadillac and they donated t-shirts for both teams. The Monday night game was a huge success. Both teams dressed in pink along with many family members, making the game a total pink out. A bake sale was organized and $175.00 was raised and given to Love Inc to be used for women in the Cadillac area battling breast cancer. The 7th and 8th grade teams would like to thank their coaches, parents and the school for supporting them and be-ing involved in this worthy cause.

Holiday Help Northern Michigan, as we all know, has long, cold winters. This can mean lots of shivering for those kids whose families struggle to have enough money coming in to pay for outdoor winter clothes. As well as winter clothes, children love receiving pre-sents for Christmas. With the economy the way it is, it can be a challenge sometimes for parents to get Christmas presents. Every year there are many classroom fundraisers and community groups who want to give to our local children in need. If your family is in need and won’t receive holiday assistance from other organizations, please complete a “Christmas Wish List” located in the elementary or middle school office, or call David Quilliam at 824-6413 by November 23, 2011. Donations are always wel-come and needed. If you are interested in donating, please con-tact David Quilliam or Dawn Shively at the number above by November 23, 2011.

The Missaukee County Road Commission requests your cooperation through the winter months while snowplowing is taking place. They ask that you be aware of the fact that the plows are on the roads many mornings at the same time that the buses are picking up students. We urge you to make sure that your children wait a safe distance from the plowed portion of the roadway until the bus actu-ally arrives at the stop. It is important to work together to keep the students safe. If you have any questions regarding the above state-ment or have any other snow removal problems please call Kelly Bekken at 231-839-4361.

INCLEMENT WEATHER-School Cancellation

While every effort is made to inform parents/guardians of a sudden unscheduled need to close schools, there is no way to assure that every parent will receive information in a timely manner to respond in their student’s best inter-est. A heavier than predicted snowfall in winter or severe rainstorm in spring or fall may result in an early dismissal from school. School personnel make every effort to avoid sending students home outside the normal schedule. School Closings Information will be broadcast on the following stations: FOX TV TV 29 TV 7 & 4 TV 9 & 10 WCCW WKLT WTCM WHKQ Northern Christian Radio N. Star Broadcasting Cadillac News Text Alert System-register at www.cadillacnews.com/alerts/ and follow the directions to register Family Emergency Plans Students and parents/guardians should develop family emergency plans for early dismissal or other unscheduled events. Head Start, Pre-School, K, K1 students may be riding on regular bus routes to regular bus stops and will ar-rive at different times than normal.

1. Does your child have a house key or know where to find one? 2. Does your child have a neighbor to go to in case no one is at home? 3. Does your child have emergency phone numbers available by the phone? 4. Have you discussed several possibilities so your child knows what to do? 5. Do a drill or at least a periodic verbal check to be sure your student know what steps to take. Keep the plan updated as personal circumstances change.

The kindergarten classes went to Geer's Pumpkin Patch in McBain in October. They enjoyed apple cider and homemade donuts. Each student got to go into the pumpkin patch and choose a pumpkin. There was also a variety of activities for the kids. Everyone had a great time.

On October 18th the Manton Middle school participated in the National implementation of Mix It Up day. Mix It Up day is designed to get students to sit with new people during their lunch. Why? Because surveys have identified the cafeteria as the place where divisions between kids are the most clear. So, on the 18th we asked our students to move out of their “comfort zones” and to connect with someone new over lunch. It’s a simple act with profound implications. When students interact with those who are dif-ferent from them, biases and misperceptions fall away. How did we do this? By asking all of the Middle School students and staff to Mix It Up at lunch. In order to accomplish this we put music in the cafeterias, handed each student and adult a number with a small piece of candy and sent them to the lunch room to find a spot at a table with the corresponding number on it. Next we all sat down at our number and played “Two Truths and a Lie”, in order to get to know each other. Did it work? Students and adults were running around looking for their numbers Students and adults interacted with each other Students were definitely “moved out of their comfort zones” Students (and adults) sat at new tables Students relaxed as they got to know their new tablemates We saw some confusion. Some people bumped into each other (we call that mixing it up) There was music. There was laughter People talked to each other that didn’t even know each other the day before It was fun. Students and adults got to know each other better = Mission Accomplished
