I have the great privilege to perform four weddings in June. St. Paul's Gift of Marriage is a wonder and a true blessing to all the couples who join their lives together in our holy space. In the spirit of the Gift of Marriage, I offer a quotation from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, it is a portion of a wedding sermon written while he was in prison, to be read at his sister's and best friend's wedding. "God is guiding your marriage. Marriage is more than your love for each other. It has a higher dignity and power, for it is God’s holy ordinance, through which He wills to perpetuate the human race till the end of time. In your love you see only your two selves in the world, but in marriage you are a link in the chain of the generations, which God causes to come and to pass away to His glory, and calls into His kingdom. In your love you see only the heaven of your own happiness, but in marriage you are placed at a post of responsibility towards the world and mankind. Your love is your own private possession, but marriage is more that something personal – it is a status, an office. Just as it is the crown, and not merely the will to rule, that makes the king, so it is marriage, and not merely your love for each other, that joins you together in the sight of God and man. As you first gave the ring to one another and have now received it a second time from the hand of the pastor, so love comes from you, but marriage from above, from God. As high as God is above man, so high are the sanctity the rights, and the promise of marriage above the sanctity, the rights, and the promise of love. It is not your love that sustains the marriage, but from now on, the marriage that sustains your love. God makes your marriage indissoluble. ‘What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder’ (Matthew 19:6). God joins you together in marriage; it is His act, not yours. Do not confound your love for one another with God. God makes your marriage indissoluble, and protects it from every danger that may threaten it from within and without; He wills to be the guarantor of its indissolubility. It is a blessed thing to know that no power on earth, no temptation, no human frailty can dissolve what God holds together; indeed, anyone who knows that may say confidently: What God has joined together, can no man put asunder. Free from all anxiety that is always a characteristic of love, you can now say to each other with complete and confident assurance: We can never lose each other now; by the will of God we belong to each other till death."

Peace be with you! Blessings! Pastor Dave

Help with the Gift of Marriage St. Paul’s Gift of Marriage program exists to help people get a good start in their marriages. St. Paul’s offers free weddings and each couple meets with Pastor at least 3 times before the wedding. The ministry group meets quarterly and welcomes additional members. Danille Isham is now the wedding coordinator and assists the couples ahead of the wedding and the day of the wedding. A St. Paul’s member is a wedding host for each wedding. Contact Charlene McLean if you would like to help as a host. We have celebrated with over 100 couples since this ministry began. Small Groups at St. Paul’s Watch the bulletin for the date for the June Home Bible Study, tentatively scheduled for June 24. The group is studying The Good and Beautiful Community and the reading is from chapter 8. Summer After-Church Coffee

Every Sunday is “Bring a Friend” Sunday at St. Paul’s and all are invited to stay after worship for coffee and treats. We need some additional coffee hosts to sign up on the calendar outside the library. Contact Amy Morgan at [email protected] or 259-9730 if you would like to be an after church coffee host one or more Sundays this summer.

Worship Needs If you have ever wondered how the Sunday service happens, it isn't by magic! Much planning and preparation goes into it. Our musicians are generous with their time and the altar committee works quietly behind the scenes. Please step forward if you are interested in helping with Sunday services. See Phyllis or Elaine to volunteer. You can also volunteer as a Lector or Worship Assistant. Being a Lector involves reading the lessons prior to the service. Serving as a Worship Assistant is an honor, and so meaningful when you do it! Please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex. Thank you, thank you. Adult Sunday School We are studying the catechism this summer. Pastor Fulton is the class leader. The class meets in Room 2 (Quilting Room) on Sundays to explore Luther’s Small Catechism. Pick up a cup of coffee and a cookie after worship and join the discussion.

Trevor Wessel, member and grandchild of Phyllis Wessel, graduated from Heights High School as Class 2012 Valedictorian. He earned a 4.0 GPA, including AP Calculus, AP Psychology, Chemistry and Trigonometry. Trevor will attend Friends University on academic and football scholarships in the fall. Trevor was awarded the Friend’s Presidential Scholarship and is a Governor’s Scholar. Congratulations, Trevor!

Congratulations to Zachary Linn and Olliea Burrell! They married at St. Paul’s on May 19th.

Our condolences to the family and friends of long time member Vera Schroeder who died April 29th.

GoZones! GoZones! After-School had a great year and is now on summer break. Over 20 kids enrolled this year and 12+ attended on average. We had great helpers this year and the kids ended the year walking to Riverside Park for pizza and playing in the fountain. Service projects included decorating cupcakes for firefighters, cleaning window wells, and planting flowers at St. Paul’s, yard sale preparation and more. Contact Cindy Galstad to see how you could help in the fall. Thanks to GoZones! volunteers for 2011-2012: Barb McDougal, Betty Ladwig, Wendell Forsse, Dave McDougal, Elaine Harvey, Daena Mejia, Cindy Galstad, Donna Embree, Charlene McLean, Erika Bentson, Norm Embree and Mariela Luna. They are all looking forward to VBS beginning on June 4th. Evie Ary, a graduate of Kid's Kingdom, will be assisting with the children and the staff through that week.

Maria is back to work after tests and will be undergoing treatment beginning this Spring. Keep her in your prayers; she plans to work through her treatment time.

Our early childhood day care and learning center is conveniently located. Hours are 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. M-F. Call 263-2433 or 263-0810. Pick up a Kid’s Kingdom flier at the information center or check out www.stpauls- wichita.org/kidskingdom/index.html.

Community Breakfast Breakfast Teams Serve an Extra Breakfast

The Breakfast Teams for June will be: St. Paul’s June 9; Reformation June 16; Christ Lutheran June 23 and Gloria Dei June 30. Thanks to those who stepped forward on June 26 to staff the breakfast! We had a number of people from St. Paul’s pitch in and also invited other Area 5 churches to participate to make it an “All Area 5 Breakfast”. The May breakfasts have been a bit less in attendance than the winter months. People can help every month or just once a year or more frequently. Contact Elaine Harvey for information.

ESOL St. Paul’s ESOL program has 20+ adults learning English on Monday – Thursday mornings each week. Our program has small classes and an emphasis on conversation. We are grateful that we have additional volunteers recently join our teacher team. Members can help the program by helping distribute information fliers around the community such as posting them on a bulletin board at work. Our classes continue in the summer. Classes are offered at 4 levels, beginning to advanced. Students purchase their own books and pay a $25 a month tuition fee. For information contact Leon Rausch, coordinator, at 263- 0810.

GoZones! and ESOL say THANKS!

Nearly $1200 was earned for St. Paul’s ESOL program and St. Paul’s GoZones! After-School program at the yard sale. Thanks again to those who donated great items to sell, those who sorted and marked the items and brought them upstairs ahead of the sale (including our After-School youth and volunteers) and those who helped on the sale days, bringing the sale items outside, serving as sales staff and lunch servers and hauling tables upstairs before the sale and then downstairs after the sale.

Help make St. Paul’s Vacation Bible School happen. Our 2012 VBS will be June 4-8 from 9-12 a.m. with “latchkey” from 8-9 a.m. each day. At Sky VBS, kids discover that by trusting God, everything is possible. The Thrill! The Joy! The Freedom! The sky is the limit.

During May we are raising funds, sending invitations to youth in our church and in our neighborhood, gathering activity station leaders and crew leaders and helpers, gathering supplies and making decorations. Our first May planning meeting is May 9 at 6 p.m. Then the morning of June 4 we “Take off”.

Contact Diane Harman at 722-7272 or [email protected] to let her know where you can help. Or sign up on the VBS display. Advance Support!

Prayer Team to pray that our VBS touches lots of youth – starting now!

Promotions – to make sure youth learn about VBS at St. Paul’s we will be delivering invitations around the neighborhood in early June and we will have extra invitation forms for families to give their friends.

Supplies – watch the bulletin boards for decorating and activity supplies needed

Setup and Decoration Crews – Youth and Adults are invited to pitch in. We will do most of the decoration Friday night June 1 and Sunday June 3.

Fund-Raising effort – we figure our VBS costs about $60 an hour. We don’t charge a fee so that lots of youth can benefit which means funds are appreciated. We hope to raise $1000 by May 31 and the NW Sedgwick County Thrivent Chapter will match our donations (1-3)

VBS Week

Registration Team – the big part is on Monday when we welcome everyone and guide them to their crews and we will need one person available each day throughout the week.

Station Leaders and Station Helpers - The Station Leaders and Helpers share the station activity with each of the 4 crews who rotate from station to station. The stations are: Bible Stories, Games, Crafts and Chadder’s Theatre and Snacks.

Flight Crew Leaders – Crew Leaders get to spend all week with their crew and take them to each of the activity stations. We plan 4 crews with 2-4 leaders for each crew so that each leader works with 6-8 youth. Adults and older teens are great Crew leaders.

Snacks Team – an essential part of every Bible School!

Activity Team for Early Arrivals (8-9 a.m. – welcome, simple crafts and table games)

General Helpers – assist the VBS director with things like taking pictures, creating a memory book and organizing materials.

Lunch helpers for Friday VBS Lunch – On Friday kids will share what they have learned at a closing program and lunch. Lunch helpers needed

Cleanup team – after the Closing Program on Friday the cleanup begins! We put craft supplies and decorations away and clean up the spaces we used.

After VBS

Follow-up throughout the Summer and Beyond: Invite VBS attendees and their families to future St. Paul’s discipleship activities for young people

Wells Project part of 2012 ELCA National Youth Gathering Global water crisis claims more lives per year than war or natural disasters—Nearly a billion people—that’s one out of seven people in our world today—lack access to clean, safe water. Unclean water causes millions of people, especially young children, to die from water-related illnesses each year. Learn how ELCA youth will be making a difference through the 100 Wells Challenge and how you can help at at www.elca.org/100wells.

Synod Assembly This year’s Synod Assembly will be June 7-9 at Bethany College in Lindsborg. The Theme is Shaping the Church for God’s Mission: Raising and Equipping Leaders for Life. Pre-Assembly workshops are on Thursday afternoon. At the Synod Assembly, reports are heard, budgets are adopted and elections are held. Pr. Tim Carey of Emanuel and Pr. Dave Fulton of St. Paul’s are candidates for Voting Member for Churchwide Assembly and Pr. Tom Hallstrom is a candidate for Synod Council. Information, workshop list, and registration at www.css-elca.org.

Women of the ELCA Convention The 2012 Central States Synod Women of the ELCA’s 25th Annual Convention will be July 27-29 at the Ramada Inn, 4016 Frederick Blvd in St. Joseph, MO. The theme will be “Sing to the Lord.” Registration Form (Early registration due before June 15, 2012). The in-kind offering will be items for the St. Joseph YWCA Shelter. Workshops include topics such as bullying and sexual exploitation of women. Working on LWR projects will be a service project for participants on Saturday morning. Jenny Michaels, newly-elected president of Women of the ELCA will attend as our church-wide representative!

Lord of Life Lutheran Votes to Close After months of prayer and difficult conversations, Lord of Life Lutheran Church (11215 West 13th Street North) voted to close. Their last worship service will be Sunday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Closing a congregation is an occasion that is filled with a mixture of emotions in varying degrees: grief and nostalgia about what has gone before, as well as anxiety and even hopefulness about the future. A final worship moment together allows a congregation to offer thanks for ministry in a given time and place, as well as naming the pain of separation from something that has been of value to people’s spiritual lives. It also provides hope as people embrace God’s continuing mission and move on to ministries in other faith communities. If you share a history with Lord of Life, or would like to support this grieving community on this difficult day, you are encouraged to attend worship with them for this final time on Sunday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m.

Malaria Campaign Effort Meets Goal Over $203,000 was given and the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, newly elected Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, expresses his gratitude for your gifts in these words: “In Liberia, there is no city or village that is safe from the malaria parasite. The whole country is at risk. So the anti-malaria work of the Lutheran Church in Liberia is of utmost importance. Through your gifts to the ELCA Malaria Campaign, you have made that anti-malaria work possible… We have been working hard to get ready for these malaria programs. Our experts have studied trends and treatments of malaria. We've identified the needs in our communities and how the church, through our health care ministries, can fill them. We're ready to mobilize—all we needed was the funding to get started. Thanks to you, our programming work can now begin. As we walk hand in hand, God will work through us to save lives.”
