Getting into the 2011 model year

we are currently testing the new

Toyota Tacoma Double Cab 4 X

4 V6 and needless to say it came

in handy with all the rain we’ve

been having. This Tacoma is

powered by a 4.0 Liter DOHC

24V-VVT-I V6 engine that pro-

duces 236 horses and still man-

ages to get 16 miles per gallon

in the city and 20 miles per gal-

lon on the highway.

Trucks in this class have gotten

roomier and have a much better

ride than they did in the old

days. Let us start with the five-

speed automatic transmission

with four W demand part time

4X4 system with two speed elec-

tronically controlled transfer

case and automatic limited slip

differential. The suspension is

Coil Spring Double Wishbone

front and rear leaf spring suspen-

sion with staggered out-board-

mounted gas shock absorbers.

Variable assist power rack and

pinion steering add to the han-

dling pleasures of the new

Tacoma Double Cab. Power-

assist front disc and rear drum

brakes brings this baby to a

smooth and safe stop. All this

rolls to the pavement on P

245/75R 16 tires circulation

around a 16 inch Styled steel

wheel.

Over the years vehicles in the

small truck class are much safer

as well. That’s another strong

point for the new Toyota Tacoma

with Toyota’s Star Safety System

with Vehicle stability control,

traction control and anti-locking

brakes with brake force distribu-

tion and electronic brake distri-

bution. All this adds up to Smart

Stop Technology. Throw in fea-

tures likes driver and front pas-

senger air bag system and seat

mounted side and side curtain

airbags. There are side impact

beams in all four doors of this

truck making for safe cabin for

all passengers.

Styling has grown with the new

Tacoma with argent grille

insert/surround, black door han-

dles and mirrors plus front and

rear bumpers, LED tail lamps

along with SMC inner bed with

steel outer panels’ storage. Rails

caps and removable tail gate

continues to impress. The new

deck rail system with four

adjustment tie down cleats

allows you to secure your valu-

able loads.

Once you are inside the new

Tacoma you get the feeling you

are in a luxury vehicle. Mainly

due to the carlike dash setup and

cloth bucket seats with pass

fold-flat features and driver seat

lumber support. The tilt/tele-

scopic steering wheel allows the

driver to get comfortable for

long trips

A 60/40 split rear bench seat

with adjustable head rest makes

the trip better for back seat rid-

ers.

Sound comes from an eight-

speaker system with AM/FM/CD

with MPS/WMA playback with

auxiliary audio jack.

The extra value package brings

the price of our test vehicle over

$31,000. That includes a set of

B.F. Goodrich P 265/70R16 tires

and engine skid plates for those

who want to go off road.

Let us not forget this also brings

in Bluetooth and XM radio and

many others features.

In these days of tough economic

times it is comforting to know

that Scion is offering a very well

equipped vehicle for less than

$20,000. Yes I’m referring to

the new 2011 Scion tC 3-door

lift back. For starters the new

Scion is powered by a 2.5 Liter

V4 DOHC 16 Valve dual VVT-I

180 horse power engine. Yet it

cranks out 23 miles per gallon in

the city and 31 miles per gallon

on the highway. This engine

mated to a six-speed sequential

automatic transmission with

smooth shifting and automatic

stick available. The handling is

enhanced by electric power

steering and ventilated front and

solid rear disc brakes. The inde-

pendent Macpherson strut front

suspension and double wishbone

rear suspension balanced per-

fectly by 18 inch alloy wheels,

wrapped by P225/45R 18 inch

performing tires.

Over the years Toyota Motor

Sales has always been able to

make smaller automobiles with

such good quality and the Scion

division is proof of that fact.

Safety is a big on such a small

vehicle again with Toyota’s Star

Safety system; Vehicle stability

Control, Traction Control, anti-

lock brakes with electronic

brake distribution as well as

brake assist and smart stop tech-

nology. Driver and front passen-

ger air bags as well as seat

mounted side air bags and even

knee bags and passengers side

curtain. Let us not forget the

driver and front passenger active

headrests. You know these fea-

tures are commonly found on

much more expensive luxury

automobiles.

Keeping the price down and still

providing good looks and quali-

ty has been at a premium for this

product line. The exterior com-

plete with Panoramic Glass

Moon roof with power tilt/slide,

color-keyed power outside mir-

rors with LED turn signal indi-

cators puts the Scion in the

upper class. Again we are talk-

ing about features found on big

SUVs and full-size luxury vehi-

cles.

Inside you are treated to a good

quality well-rounded instrument

cluster as well as sport bucket

seats up front. Such features as

power windows with driver side

auto down and power door locks

goes well with remote keyless

entry with engine immobilizer.

Sure it has A/C and cruise con-

trol and low and behold it has

Pioneer 300 Watt AM/FM/CD

with eight speakers Aux, and

USB port with iPod connective-

ly. Don’t forget we are talking

about less than $20,000. A

Leather-trimmed tilt/telescopic

three-spoke steering wheel with

audio controls, plus multi-infor-

mation display and a digital

clock rounds out the dash fea-

tures.

In closing please allow me to

add a 60/40 Split Reclining

Fold-Fit rear seat and Scion

throws in a full tank of gas.

Everyone in the whole wide

world has heard or taken a liking

to one of Sam Cooke’s songs.

During the period from 1957 to

1964 Cooke recorded more than

300 songs and 29 of those songs

made the top 40 list. My mind

goes back to my upbringing in

Mer Rouge, Louisiana. It was

the summer of 1965 and my

brother Charlie and I had

mowed a few lawns and had

enough money to go to town on

Saturday Night. By that time

Sam’s mega hit “Another

Saturday Night” was hot on the

charts as well as several other

tunes. Because barely turning

13, I certainly didn’t have any

one and having made $1.25 that

day you couldn’t tell me I didn’t

have money. At the time I actu-

ally thought I’d have two chicks

swinging on my little skinny

arms. That was not the case, but

never the less I still enjoyed

hearing the song blasting from

the old Seabird at Wilbert’s

Café. Those days will never

come again, but it sure is great

reminiscing about them.

The Sam Cooke Story

Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi

on January 22, 1931 Sam Cook

one of eight children to the

union of Annie Mae and

Revered Charles Cook a Baptist

minister. The family moved to

Chicago, Illinois two years later

and thus Sam attended Wendell

Phillips Academy High School,

the same school the late great

Nate “King” Cole had attended a

few years earlier.

Starting out with his family

members singing in a group

called “The Singing Children

and later as the lead singer of

the Highway QCs in his teen

years. Cook, who added the (e)

to his last name, went on to

replace the tenor singer R. H.

Harris with the outstanding

gospel group The Soul Stirrers.

Cooke took the group to new

level and they were signed by

Specialty Records and recorded

the hits “Peace in the valley”,

“How far am I from Canaan”,

“Jesus Paid the debt” and “One

more River”...all quality gospel

songs.

Gaining popularity as the

months went by, Cooke moved

to cross over into pop music and

recorded a song (Loveable) in

1956 under the name of Dale

Cooke. But thanks to a very dis-

tinctive voice people realized it

was him and that didn’t sit too

well with the gospel community.

The head of Specialty Records

gave Cooke permission to start

working on some secular music,

but became displeased when he

found out it wasn’t kind of

music their other artist (Little

Richard) was doing. So Cooke

and his producer Bumps

Blackwell left the label and

Cooke begin to do his own

thing.

Things took a turn for the better

for Sam in 1957 when he

appeared on the ABC’s Guy

Mitchell Show and later in the

same year he signed with Keen

Records. His first was the

Immortal “You Send Me” with

the B side a reworked version of

George Gershwin’s

“Summertime”, which spent six

weeks at # 1 on the Billboard R

& B chart. The song also had

mainstream success spending

three week at # 1 on the

Billboard Pop charts.

Needless to say Sam Cooke, a

little guy was Clarksdale,

Mississippi had started on one of

the world’s most famous seven-

year stints in musical history.

Taking advantage of his success

Cooke began working even

harder at his craft. In 1961 he

started his own label (SAR) with

J. W. Alexander and Roy Crain.

The label soon added such

groups as The Simms Twins,

Billy Crystal, The Valentinos,

and a couple of soon to be

famous acts in Bobby Womack

and Johnnie Taylor.

That wasn’t all! Sam Cooke

would go on to create a publish-

ing imprint and management

firm and left Keen to go to RCA

Victor. At RCA his first hit was

“Chain Gang” reaching number

2 in the billboard pop charts and

he followed that with more hits

including “Sad Mood”, “Bring it

on home to me” (with Lou

Rawls on back vocals), “Another

Saturday Night” and “Twisting

the Night away”: all super hits

and songs we are still listening

to today. During this hot string

Sam Cooke would go on to have

29 top 40 hits and recorded

more than 300 songs mostly sin-

gles. In 1963 he recorded a

blues-inflected LP “Night Beat”

and his most critically studio

album “Ain’t That Good News”

featured five singles in 1964. At

points during this time Sam

Cooke would sleep only four

hours a night and spent a great

deal of time in the studio work-

ing on his perfession.

Becoming one of the first black

performer and composer to man-

age and operate the business

side of his musical career. Sam

Cooke also took an active part in

the Civil Rights Movement!

On December 11, 1964 while

sitting on top of the world at the

tender age of 33 Sam Cooke’s

life came to an abrupt end when

he was shot to death at the

Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles

California. Conflicting reports

about a woman who had spent

time with him early in the night

and the hotel manager who

claimed Cooke (who was not

known as a violent person)

attacked her. The family and

friends as well as fans of Sam

Cooke never bought the women

stories, but the L. A. Police did

and the case was ruled as justifi-

able homicide and closed.

Mourners lined up for more than

4 city blocks as the funeral serv-

ices were held for Cooke in

Chicago and he was buried in

Forest Lawn Park Cemetery in

Glendale, California.

Cooke’s memories will live for-

ever and many artist world-wide

are offering version of some of

Cooke’s work. Shortly after his

death, upstart Motown released

“We Remember Sam Cooke”, a

collection of his tunes recorded

by The Supremes. Two of

Cooke’s songs “Bring it on

Home to me” and “A Change

Gonna Come” were both fea-

tured in the movie Ali. John

Mellencamp song “Ain’t Even

done with the Night” has Sam

Cooke singing on the radio. R.

Kelly performed the “A Change

Gonna Come’ during his

September 2009 “Ladies Make

Some Noise Tour” in New York

City. The same song was used

in Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X

and James Taylor did a version

of the song in The West Wing.

The late rapper Tupac Shakur

made reference to Cooke in his

hit song “Thugz Mansion”. Nas

makes reference to him in “We

Major” with Kanye West. In The

Roots song “Stay Cool”, the

emcee suggests “I got the soul

of a young Sam Cooke”. Even

Canadian Punk Rock groups like

The Riptides pay homage to

Cooke in Change Gonna Come.

The band Night Beats claimed to

have borrowed their name from

Cooke’s album Night Beat. Even

UK great Rod Stewart once told

VH1 he use lock himself in a

room and listen to Sam Cooke’s

vocal phrases.

Cooke was inducted as a charter

member in the Rock and Roll

Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1999

Cooke was honored with the

Grammy’s Lifetime

Achievement Award and Rolling

Stone ranked him #16 on their

list of the “100 Greatest Artist of

All-Times. In 2008 Cooke was

named fourth “Greatest Singer

of All-times by Rolling Stone.

Some 46 years later fans all over

the world celebrated what would

have been Cooke’s 80th birthday

on January 22, 2011. In talking

with his brother L.C. Cooke who

lives in Chicago today we

learned the family never

believed the Hotel people stories

and never will. But they have

satisfaction in knowing in just

seven years Sam Cooke record-

ed over 300 songs and 29 of

those made the top 40 list. He

has since gone down in the

industry as one of the world’s

finest composers, song writers

and soul singers. Cooke paved

the way for the likes of the late

great Johnnie Taylor and Otis

Redding, plus Aretha Franklin

and many other soul singers.

L.C. Cooke is coming to

Houston to be the honor guest at

the Fiesta Black History

Celebration Free Music Festival.

Ernie Johnson pays tribute to

Sam Cooke to climate an after-

noon of music, fun and games

on Saturday February 19, 2011

from 12.30 PM until 6.00PM.

L.C. had his share of time in the

limelight teaming up with the

Doo Wop band Johnny Keyes

and the Magnificents for a cou-

ple of years and then doing his

thing from a solo stand point.

In closing we want to add please

come out to the show and meet

L.C. Cooke. We know you will

enjoy it. Plus there’s all the fun

and games for the whole family

along with some great singing.

And it’s all FREE!

Dear reader it is again a blessingto be able to share with yousome scriptural TRUTHS, John17:17. Remember, the purposeof these articles is to seek theTRUTH according to THEWORD, thereby exposingERROR. We believe this is bestdone by definitions and the pre-ponderance of scriptures; whichis having superior weight, force, importance, or influence ofscripture. Again we believe thisallows SCRIPTURE to INTER-PRET scripture, thereby allow-ing a better understanding onthat topic. We also believe, according to scripture, it is ofthe MOST importance to knowthe WILL of GOD, throughChrist and his apostles: “Matt17:4 Then answered Peter, andsaid unto Jesus, Lord, it is goodfor us to be here: if thou wilt, letus make here three tabernacles;one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While heyet spake, behold, a brightcloud overshadowed them: andbehold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my belovedSon, in whom I am well pleased;hear ye him.” “Matt 28:18And Jesus came and spake untothem, saying, All power isgiven unto me in heaven and inearth. 19 Go ye therefore, andteach all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolyGhost: 20 Teaching them toobserve all things whatsoever Ihave commanded you: and, lo, Iam with you alway, even untothe end of the world. Amen.”“John 17:18 As thou hast sentme into the world, even so haveI also sent them into the world.19 And for their sakes I sanctifymyself, that they also might besanctified through the truth. 20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shallbelieve on me through theirword; 21 That they all may beone; as thou, Father, art in me,and I in thee, that they also maybe one in us: that the world maybelieve that thou hast sent me.22 And the glory which thougavest me I have given them;that they may be one, even aswe are one:” “Acts 2:41 Thenthey that gladly received hisword were baptized: and thesame day there were added untothem about three thousand souls.42 And they continued stedfast-ly in the apostles’ doctrine andfellowship, and in breaking ofbread, and in prayers.” “ Eph5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awakethou that sleepest, and arise fromthe dead, and Christ shall givethee light. 15 See then that yewalk (1)circumspectly, not asfools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because thedays are evil. 17 Wherefore beye not unwise, but understandingwhat the will of the Lordis”..Definition:(1)circumspectly

naughtiness, and receive withmeekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of theword, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23For if any be a hearer of theword, and not a doer, he is likeunto a man beholding his naturalface in a glass: 24 For hebeholdeth himself, and goeth hisway, and straightway forgettethwhat manner of man he was. 25But whoso looketh into the per-fect law of liberty, and contin-ueth therein, he being not a for-getful hearer, but a doer of thework, this man shall be blessedin his deed. James 2:17 Evenso faith, if it hath not works, isdead, being alone. 18 Yea, aman may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thyfaith without thy works, and Iwill shew thee my faith by myworks. 19 Thou believest thatthere is one God; thou doestwell: the devils also believe, andtremble. 20 But wilt thou know,O vain man, that faith withoutworks is dead? 1 Pet 4:1Forasmuch then as Christ hathsuffered for us in the flesh, armyourselves likewise with thesame mind: for he that hath suf-fered in the flesh hath ceasedfrom sin; 2 That he no longershould live the rest of his time inthe flesh to the lusts of men, butto the will of God. 3 For thetime past of our life may sufficeus to have wrought the will ofthe Gentiles, when we walked inlasciviousness, lusts, excess ofwine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4Wherein they think it strangethat ye run not with them to thesame excess of riot, speakingevil of you:

will hear and will increase learning, and a man of

understanding will attain unto wise counsel.”

As the girls’ high basketball sea-

son hit full stride, the Lady Colts

of Worthing are knocking on the

door of a district title. Having

one district loss to the Lady

Wildcats of Wheatley, the Colts

are off to a good start in the sec-

ond half. Beating Booker T.

Washington 84-38 and

Scarborough 105-0 this week

Coach Harris says her team is

getting it together. “We are

looking forward to our rematch

with Wheatley because they are

the only team in district to beat

us”. The charming coach says

her team is going through transi-

tional barriers and you always

want your team to peak at the

right time. “I can see this team

coming together as a unit and

before the season ends we feel

we will have balance scoring

and a complete team by playoff

time”.

When asked about working with

one of the most celebrated play-

er in HISD history in Nash,

Coach Harris says it not as big a

chore as some people think it is.

“Not really because we teach

character off the floor brining it

on the floor”. Harris went on to

say the mark of a great player is

how well they make the other

players around them blend into

the team unit. “Jenzel is starting

to make that happen and she is

really finding the open girl and

that’s a plus for us as a unit”.

Conditioning is a big key to the

Lady Colts success because they

are short on numbers. “Yes we

are big on conditioning as well

as strength training; this is also

the district cross-country cham-

pionship team”.

As we continued talking with

Coach Harris we learned she is

well aware of the lack of num-

bers in the inner city schools,

but it has not stopped her and

her staff from working hard. “If

you were to go to the homes and

check the residences that should

be at their home school, you

would certainly see a much bet-

ter balance of talent in the inner

city”.

The Lady Colts compared their

stats to the state Class 4A num-

ber one ranked them. “There are

no dominating teams this year

and the one who worked the

hardest and plays together will

probably win it all”.

Getting the point across that aca-

demics comes before athletics

but the character of the person

comes before academics. “That’s

the point we want to make with

our kids students of the game

and when they leave here we

want them to be able to go on to

college and understand the aca-

demics and athletics and use it

to open the doors of education

for them”

In closing the charming coach

added; “we don’t have big num-

bers but you have to pull togeth-

er and get the best with what

you are dealing with”.

Please allow me to add she is

doing a wonderful job along

with Michael West a Worthing

graduate helping her.

Prairie View, Texas-With the

game on the line and TSU clos-

ing to within five points Latia

(Puffy) Williams connected on

nine of 12 shots and led all scor-

ers with 19 points in the win.

The sophomore guard/forward

from Atlanta, Georgia added five

rebounds to go with her game

winning performance. “Well

early in the second half we just

started slowly and then finally

got it going”. But if they follow

the coaching staff, Williams

feels the Lady Panthers can real-

ly get it all together and win the

SWAC championship.”We just

need to focus a lot better and

keep our mind on what we’re

doing out there and we’ll be

alright”.

Coming off the bench is fine in

Puffy’s mind and she’s ready to

do what it takes to help her team

win. “If Coach Wilson wants

me to come off the bench and

score or defend, I’m willing to

do whatever it takes for us to

win games”.

When asked about the loss to

Southern in their SWAC opener

she replied, “We kind of slipped

up against the Lady Jags but

tonight we got off to a much bet-

ter start and we want to keep it

that way”.

Williams closed by saying play-

ing three games in six days is no

problem because they are in

shape. “We are ready to play if

we have to play again tonight.

We are ready and willing to help

our team win”. She added one

assist and one steal to her per-

formance in the win over Texas

Southern University.

The outstanding player was All-

State while playing at North

Clayton High School in

Riverdale Georgia. She majors

in Health and has been playing

ball since she was four years

old.

A RISING STAR-LATIA WILLIAMS - P.V.

As the Lady Colts of Worthing

High School continue their

march toward another girl’s bas-

ketball playoff year, center

Brittany Pinckney is getting bet-

ter and better. The post players

controlled the lane in their

games this week as the Colts

rolled over Booker T.

Washington 84-38 and

Scarborough 105-0. All this

keeps them one game behind

Wheatley for the district lead.

In talking with Pinckney we

learn the team has an outstand-

ing player in Jenzel Nash but

they really love playing as a

unit. “I’m working on my pass-

ing and getting my total game

up so we can become a complete

team. At just over 6 feet tall,

Pinckney admits it helps to have

size down low and the team is

getting better-rounded this sea-

son.

A smile broke out all over her

face when we asked about the

team’s big win over Booker T.

Washington earlier in the week.

“Well I feel we are working day

by day so we can get to the top

but it felt good to beat Booker T.

the other night”. The talented

center went on to add the Colts

want to gallop into the playoffs

and then turn it on full speed.

“We’re not rushing it; we want

to build day by day and keep

working hard”.

With a love for Science in the

classroom Brittany says it’s defi-

nitely going to be her college

major. “Studying the human

body and the sciences thereof is

fascinating to me”.

In closing Pinckney said she just

worked on her game by running

to get her conditioning up and

did some weighs to get stronger.

It’s been a while since we’ve

seen the likes of Jenzel Nash in

an HISD uniform. The senior

from Worthing is lighting up the

scoreboards and dazzling her

fans to the tune of big numbers.

Fact so much so perhaps the last

time we saw this kind of all-

around play was during the days

of Austin’s Debra Williams.

Nash has a tremendously quick

release and an excellent first

step and all that goes well with a

well-rounded knowledge of the

game. She started the week with

64 points in an 83-38 win over

Booker T. Washington and she

closed it out with a sparkling 48

point performance over

Scarborough in a 105-0 score.

Nash added five boards, 12

assists and 18 steals in the win.

However the Lady Colts are still

in second place because the

Lady Wildcats of Wheatley beat

them in the first half of district

play. Believe me they are look-

ing for to their second meeting.

We spoke with Nash about the

season in general and their run

for another playoff berth. “It’s

been great so far and I knew I

had to be a leader and make sure

our team comes together so we

can be a playoff team again”.

Basically having a target on her

back each time she goes on the

court Nash says she is well

aware of that fact. “Yes sir I

understand as I improve my

game other teams are going to

work hard to find ways to make

it tough on us”. The talented

senior went on to add it’s a team

effort and her teammates are

willing to work hard to make

sure they have a good season

and make a good playoff run.

In the classroom at Worthing

Nash likes Pre-Calculus because

she considers it a challenge. In

her spare time she loves to

watch college women basketball.

Needless to say UConn’s Maya

Moore is her favorite player and

Cadence Parker who she feels

will make a comeback to the

WNBA.

Looking ahead Nash says she is

yet to decide what University

she will attend but she knows

she wants to study Physical

Therapy because she wants to

remain around sports.

With a love for the game like all

the other great ones Nash says

she definitely wants to play on

the top level. “Well I under-

stand that’s a way from now, but

yes sir I want to play in the

WNBA or overseas when that

time comes”. But for the time

being Nash says just getting to

know the game is enough to

keep her busy for now.

“Knowing I’m not from a bas-

ketball family and just started

playing four years ago there’s a

lot I’ve still got to learn about

the game”. She went on to praise

Coach Leslie Harris and her

assistant Michael West with

helping her develop. “During

the off season I worked on my

passing and worked on assists

because they might want me to

play point guard in college”.

In closing Nash said she simply

saw some boys playing basket-

ball and decided she could play

this game. Well she is certainly

playing it very well!

Soul and Blues Legend Ernie Johnson has

released a new CD congratulating

President Barack Obama for the passing

of the Health Care Bill in 2010. Johnson

is entering his 43rd year as a performer

feels good about the new Health Care Bill

and says it’s an honor to have an African

American President sign it into law.

“When we were in the cotton fields of

Winnsboro, Louisiana, we couldn’t have

imagined a black man as President of the

United States”. Ernie went on to say at

his age he considers himself blessed to

still be here. “Every time I go to a funer-

al of another great singer, I say thank you

Lord for blessing me”.

Johnson, a longtime performer, spent

many years traveling with the likes of

Blues legend Bobby Bland. Over a 15

year period Johnson was also the regular

opening act for the late Johnnie Taylor.

The bonus track is “I Remember J.T.” a

song paying tribute to his longtime friend

Johnnie Taylor.

Known as Little Ernie because he was so

young in the late 60s Johnson had a trav-

eling band and learned to sing other peo-

ple songs until he was able to record his

own. Since that time he has recorded over

200 songs.

Giving new meaning to the

words the early bird gets the

worm, we rolled over to Butler

Field House to catch a look at

the Lady Colts of Worthing High

School basketball team. While

talking with Coach Leslie Harris

we stumbled upon twins for our

Fiesta Student of the week pro-

file. They are Sane and Sade

Picquet a dynamic duo in the

backcourt on the basketball

team.

The lovely and talented twins

are the daughter of Jeannette

Picquet-Perry and James Perry.

Sane ranks number five in the

class while Sade is number 10.

Who could ask for anything bet-

ter for our profile? Both girls are

in the choir and are praise

dancers at Kingdom Fellowship

Church and both enjoy serving

the Lord very much.

In their spare time, both girls run

track and are members of the

junior ROTC. Throw in the fact

they are members on the Lady

Colts Cross-Country track and

field district champs.

On the subject of goals in life,

Sane wants to become an athlet-

ic head trainer and learn to work

with sport medicine, while Sade

wants to become a physical ther-

apist and operate her own busi-

ness.

Both girls consider their mother

as their most driving force in

life. Sane said her mother

always stresses hard work to her

and her coach also played a big

role. On the other hand Sade

added she feels the words hard

work comes up a lot when she’s

at home as well as while playing

for Coach Harris.

Favorite subjects are similar for

the girls also. Sane loves math

like calculus but has a flare for

science because of her love for

the science of the human body.

On the other hand Sade like

math best and feels the way it

challenges her makes it more

exciting to make good grade in

the class.

On the subject of describing

themselves, both had interesting

answers. Sane considers herself

to be a bright person who wants

to be known as a positive per-

son. While Sade says she likes

keeping her feeling in and is not

as out front as her sister. But

she did admit she loves follow-

ing in her sister footsteps.

We asked if they had anything to

do over in life what would it be?

Sane said she would like to have

studied harder earlier on in

school. She added maybe she

would be number one in their

class instead of number five.

According to Sade she too could

have done more and both agreed

they will do more when they get

to college.

As we moved on, talk turned to

school changes if they could

make the rules at Worthing.

Sane says she would like to see

the administration work harder

to get the students involved with

campus activities and in the

community as a whole. While

Sade said the district could work

on better food in the school’s

cafeteria.

In closing both student said the

way their mother checks up on

their grades, they know they

have to make the cut or no cell

phone. Plus they shared the posi-

tive tutoring programs their

mother made available for them.

We want to commend their par-

ents on doing a wonderful job

with the twins and it was an

honor to have them as our Fiesta

Students of the week!

Just as the 2011 year begins sev-

eral of Houston most permanent

figures have passed on. On

January 16, 2011 the Lord called

Joe Dupree Fields home. Born

in Henderson, Texas on June 23,

1938 Joe Fields was the son of

the late Nellie and William

Fields. The family moved to

Houston, Texas when Joe was

small and he attended Crawford

Elementary, E. O. Smith and the

historic Phyllis Wheatley. Fields

played linebacker for the

Wildcats varsity squad. Upon

graduating he attended Houston

Community College to study

business. It was there he met the

love of his life in Nettie and

they later married. For the more

than 54 years and the couple

produced six children. Brenda

Harris who is the office manager

at Uncle Buddy’s, Archie Fields

(Chere’), Patricia Goode

(Michael), Paul Fields, Paula

Dreas (Charles), and Willard

Fields (Dian). They have eight

grandchildren; Sheree Walker

(Julian) Daniel Fields, Jeremy

Fields, Jason Fields, Eva Fields,

Nicholas Fields Dejuna Fields

and Desiree Fields. The Fields

have one great-grand child

Elijah Fields and a host of

nieces and nephews, cousins, co-

workers, business associates and

friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his

parent as well as brothers

Earnest and AJ Fields and Sister

Inez Telphy.

Three sisters (Willene Jones,

Earline Battles and Claudine

Johnson (Luther) are left to

mourn.

In his early adulthood Joe had

special love for the blues and

promoted the likes of the late

Johnnie Clyde Copeland, Joe

Hughes, Clarence Green as well

as Guitar Slim and many others.

While working with Access

Houston we used to tape delay

the Uncle Buddy’s Juneteenth

Celebration each year for a 10

year period. At that time we

never knew Joe was the guy

who booked the acts for that

show. He simply went about his

business of taking care of busi-

ness and not once did I ever hear

him brag.

In 1969 with his great skills in

sales, Joe met the late legendary

Roosevelt “Uncle Buddy” Riley

and the two would go on to

work together for more than 40

years. During the early years Joe

had his own car lot (Fields Auto

Sales) before becoming a fixture

at Uncle Buddy’s until he retired

in 2010.

He always greeted his customers

with a smile and conducted busi-

ness is a very professional man-

ner. You could call on Joe for

any parts or services in the auto-

mobile industry.

Four years ago we begin work-

ing with Fiesta for the Black

History Celebration and I would

visit with Joe to learn what to do

when it comes to booking acts

for the show.

For those of you who didn’t

know, Joe Fields was much

more than an auto salesman; he

was able to give quality advice

in many areas. Please allow me

to say he will be missed by not

only his family and the Uncle

Buddy’s Car family, but the

entire company has lost a giant

source of knowledge and infor-

mation.

The Worthing Lady Colts of

Coach Leslie Harris are in the

spotlight as they battle Wheatley

for the District 21-4A title. With

many years of watching Booker

T. Washington rule this district

before the Wildcats won it, the

Colts waited their turn. Many

feel this is their turn, after beat-

ing BTW 84-38 to open the sec-

ond half as they have their sights

set on a rematch with the Lady

Wildcats. According to the

Colts they will be ready and

they are getting it all together. In

the BTW game, Jenzel Nash

ripped the nets for 64 points and

added 48 more against

Scarborough. We haven’t seen

those kinds of numbers since the

days of Austin’s Debra Williams,

the All-Time leading scorer in

HISD girls’ history.

Unfortunately for Scarborough’s

first year coach Paul Wilburn

they had to play the Colts on

Saturday. A home grown HISD

player himself, Wilburn a former

Studewood Cobra certainly has a

winning background. The out-

standing linebacker from BTW

went on to graduate from Prairie

View A & M University before

teaching and coaching at

Scarborough.

Worthing took advantage of the

Lady Spartans under manned

squad and jumped to a 40-0 first

period lead. The Lady Colts

dressed only 6 players also.

Then it got to 66-0 at the half.

The Colts agreed to run the

clock in the second half and

called off their press, but still led

88-0 at the end of the third peri-

od. Basically it was just standing

and watching the Colts still

manage to have the ball in their

hands and score a 105-0 victory.

It marked the first time in 29

years of covering basketball

where I’ve seen a team fail to

score a single point.

Again I can safely say we cer-

tainly feel Wilburn will be able

to work with these girls and we

want to wish him luck.

Pasadena, Texas-The Galveston

Ball Tornadoes won for the

23rd time in 44 games when

they turned back number one La

Marque 81-76 before an over

flowing crowd at Phillips Field

House in Pasadena. It marks the

first meeting between the

District 24-4A rivals and the

second time around will proba-

bly have to go to an even bigger

arena. TSU’s Health and

Physical Education arena would

be a good choice for the second

district meeting between the two

teams. Many people covering

high school sports feel it will

come down between one of

these teams to have the better

chance of defeating two times

Region III, state along with

national champ Jack Yates. If

you recall it was the Mighty

Jack Yates Lions the last HISD

team standing in football and La

Marque beat them before going

all the way to state before they

were beaten.

Ball came into the game ranked

number five in the state by some

polls as La Marque held down

the number one spot in most

state polls. The Cougars are 22-

2 following the lost. But they

trailed 44-38 at the half to the

23-2 Tornadoes. Slowing it

down was the move by Coach

Jerald Temple of Ball and it

worked as they increased the

lead to 10 midway through the

third period. But La Marque

used the outstanding play of

Julien Lewis who scored five

straight points to open the fourth

period, for one last push. He fin-

ished with 26 points but Ball’s

Mike Evans 20 points and

Terran Petteway 23 points

wouldn’t allow them to catch up.

They combined for 12 fourth

period points and put the game

out of reach for the Cougars.

But Coach Cedric Mason of La

Marque says they will be look-

ing forward to the next meeting.

Who know; there could very

well be a third meeting of these

two teams for the Region III

Class 4A championship!

Is there a better defensive

football conference in the coun-

try than the SEC, apparently

not? Once again, another bowl

game with prolific offenses on

the field. The defense was the

deciding factor. Whether it was a

conference championship game,

a bowl game, or a national

championship game, it still

boiled down to defense; could

your team stop somebody from

scoring. Offenses bring crowds,

but, defenses still wins games.

The Auburn Tigers of the

SEC were crowned the 2010

National DivI FBS Champions,

after putting up a defensive

effect of power and speed.

Winning 22-19, over the Oregon

Ducks in the Tostitos BCS

National Title Game, at the

Fiesta Bowl. They stopped the

Oregon Ducks vaunted speed on

offense. Once again the SEC

proved that it is the #1 college

football conference in the coun-

try. Then it becomes regional.

This year, the SEC provided the

college football nation with a lot

of excitement, on and off the

field. They (SEC) also represent-

ed the bulk of teams for BCS

bowls.

SWAC

We cannot talk, write, dis-

cuss, enough about the year that

Texas Southern University had in

the SWAC. Coach Johnnie Cole

and staff did a hell of a job this

year. After making the statement

at their football media day, that

TSU would be running the ball to

take advantage of running back

Martin Gilbert’s ability to carry

the load. It would balance the

offense, and keep the defense

fresh. The same defense that

made mincemeat of conference

foes Grambling, Southern, and

Alabama State twice. Leading the

SWAC, for the second year in a

row. This year the TSU defense

finished #1 in FCS (Football

Championship Series) Even

though Prairie View provided

TSU with an early season loss,

I’ve just got to believe that the

road trip to Tuskegee was a

defining football moment for the

Tigers of Texas Southern.

C-USA

What a difference a year

makes when you can go through

a season with few injuries. This

year that was not the case, espe-

cially locally. Rice had the usual

in season injuries, on a weekly

basis. But it was definitely not

good year for the Cougars. A

west coast trip to UCLA that

seemed promising, when the

schedule was put together.

Turned into something else, after

the starter, then the backup quar-

terback goes down, because of

season ending injuries. The team

(UH) went 3-7 the rest of way.

Yes it was a regression year, but

it should have provided backups

with an opportunity to step in and

keep the program moving for-

ward. And that didn’t happen, it

needed to, but it didn’t. Now that

the NCAA has granted quarter-

back Kase Keenam, an extra

year of football eligibility, offen-

sively UH should be in good

shape. Now to shore up the

defense, not just at UH, but also

at Rice both teams should be

back on the winning track, going

to a bowl game, competing for a

conference championship.

Shoring up the defense changed

the mentality at Prairie View and

TSU and we saw what the end

result was, a championship.

BIG XII

Talk about a letdown, what

year the Longhorns suffered

through. At what looked like it

would be a promising year.

Coming off their national cham-

pionship run, there was depth,

and some defensive experience.

But, it didn’t come together, as a

team. To the point that Longhorn

Coach Mack Brown was forced

to apologize to the Longhorn

faithful after a weekly display of

horrible football. He vowed that

would never happen again. Too

bad A&M never got the memo,

because they found their defense,

specialty team, and a quarterback

in [name]. After a loss to

Missouri that seemed like the

team should have at least com-

peted against, Texas A&M Coach

Mike Sherman didn’t make apol-

ogizes. They just went back to

basics and used Kansas as a test

pattern. The AGGIES had team

explosion, from that point on as

A&M moved forward and fin-

ished BIG XII play 6-0(including

the game), with an appearance in

the Cotton Bowl against LSU(41-

27,LSU). But what a season for

the AGGIES (9-4). Texas will

regroup, they usually do. This

time it will have to be done at a

faster clip. The Baylor Bears

have finally stepped into the BIG

XII football picture. With the

return of RGIII, Coach Art Briles

Baylor Bears are headed in the

right direction. A bowl appear-

ance (TEXAS BOWL, 38-14,

Illinois), is a start. It will leave

their fans wanting more.

Lastly, several conference

changes will arise the coming

seasons. The BIG XII will lose

Colorado (PAC 10) and Nebraska

(BIG TEN). The SWAC put out

an invitation to Tennessee State.

The WAC will lose Boise State

and Nevada (both to the

Mountain West). The WAC has

put an invitation to both LAMAR

and UTSA, to replace them. Both

programs are just getting into

DivI FBS (Football Bowl Series).

The Mountain West loses Utah

(PAC 10) and TCU (BIG EAST).

Hopefully there won’t be a lot

more moves this summer, but

just in case, follow the MONEY.

Prairie View, Texas-In her first

season as the head coach Toyelle

Wilson is doing a marvelous job

with the Lady Panthers program.

With the help of assistants Dawn

Brown, Rob Amboree, Ortega

McDavid and Pete Longoria

they’ve put together a good

game plan and whipped Texas

Southern University Lady Tigers

64-52 for their second SWAC

victory in three games. They

would go on to win three more

before losing the next game at

Mississippi Valley State on

Saturday January 22nd.

Wilson who is in her 5th season

with the Panther program is

excited to be taking over for

Cynthia Cooper-Dyke who

moved on. Noted for turning

around programs Wilson

coached three seasons at Robert

Morris University in Pittsburgh

leading the program to a 20-win

game season. That places her

third in NCAA history in the

biggest turnarounds in one sea-

son.

We spoke with Wilson following

their win to get some of her

thoughts about the Lady

Panthers season. The TSU Lady

Tigers closed the gap to within

five and Wilson talked about

what happened during that

stretch of the game.”We were

allowing TSU to penetrate the

lane and not playing very good

defense”. After those six or

seven minutes, the Lady

Panthers got some big plays

from Robin Jones and Latia

(Puffy) Williams and went on to

put the game way.

Coach Wilson talked about the

progress of the Panther Program.

“I would like our girls to jell and

we want them to get to know

one another strengths and weak-

ness, because we have five new

players and we just want to peak

at the right time”. Working hard

in practice is the key to get our

team where we want to be in

order to win a SWAC champi-

onship. Having three games in

six days got the Lady Panthers

going. “Since they don’t like to

practice it was good for them

but we are going to need these

two days off before we face

Grambling in Dallas. It worked

because the Panthers won that

game and the following two

also.

In closing Coach Wilson said

they are looking for three people

to step up each game. “It doesn’t

matter which three but we had

17 assists on 26 baskets tonight

so that shows we are moving the

ball well, plus we had four peo-

ple in double figures”.

Senior forward Robin Jones was

on target as she hit on seven of

nine shots from the field in the

game for her14 points and

grabbed a team leading eight

rebounds. Jones transferred from

Memphis to P V and is a native

of Waco Texas. We spoke with

Jones as she made some big

plays down the stretch. “During

the time out Coach Wilson told

me I had to step up because

Nicole Walton had three fouls

and we wanted to attack her”.

They did and Robin scored

twice and Walton fouled out of

the contest. “No sir, I didn’t feel

any pressure because I’ve gotten

use to it since I’ve been playing

a long time”.

We are honored to announce that

our King-Size Mover and

Shaker for the month of January

2011 is Coach Clarence

Stubblefield.

Coach Stubblefield agreed to

meet me at the Fonde Recreation

Center and of course he beat me

there. He also called to remind

me that he was there waiting for

me. Before he hung up the

phone he stated that “ this place

brings up so many memories”.

Coach Stubblefield was born in

Grapeland, Texas and moved to

Houston in 1955. He is one of

12 children born to his parents,

he added that he “ was the 4th

one from the bottom”.

Once in Houston, he attended

E.O. Smith and graduated from

Wheatly High School. He added

that “he played on Wheatley’s

1958 State Championship

Team”. In the fall of that year

he enrolled into Prairie View

A&M University. In 1961

PVAMU men’s basketball

team was voted the #1 small

college basketball team in

America by the Associated

Press. The following year they

won the AIA Championship;

with the leadership, talent, and

skills of their Co-Captain,

Clarence Stubblefield.

As a young basketball player at

Booker T. Washington High

School, I thought I was a very

good defensive player, until one

day when we were slacking off

during practice. Coach

Stubblefield stopped practice

and informed us that we must

learn how to play defense if we

wanted to be winners. He told us

that in college during a big game

his defensive assignment was

the great Willis Reed. Well, we

did learn to play defense and our

team has the record for the most

games won during the basketball

season; thanks to Coach

Stubblefield’s coaching abilities.

According, to Coach

Stubblefield his biggest claim to

fame is having a sister who is

the president of an Ivy League

School. He added that his sister

Dr. Ruth J. Simmons who is the

18th President of Brown

University “could ride a horse

better than Roy Rogers”.

Coach Stubblefield was inducted

into the Prairie View A&M Hall

of Fame in 2010 as a player and

is scheduled to be inducted into

the Prairie View Interscholastic

League Coaches Hall of Fames

this summer.

As a basketball coach, teacher,

surrogate father, and mentor for

over 45 years, Coach

Stubblefield touched many lives

and redirected the pathways of

many young people. He stated

“that many of his former

basketball players went on to do

great things in life, and had great

college careers like Randy

Burns”. Many became

successful professional athletes

like Leonard “Too Tall”

Mitchell, Mercury Hayes,

Dwight Davis, and Marvin

Jackson. Some became

engineers, teachers, coaches,

lawyers like Jeremy Brown, and

doctors like Rueben Monmouth.

Coach Stubblefield added that

even I was one of his former

basketballplayers who went on

to become his boss and the

interim principal at Booker T.

Washington H.S./H.S.E., he

stated that “during his career he

had worked for only one

principal and that was Mr. F.D.

Wesley”. Coach Stubblefield

stressed that he truly loved

working at Booker T.

Washington with Mr. Wesley

and his staff, mainly because of

the support he received for the

basketball program and loved

the entire school showed for

each student.

When asked about his future

plans Coach Stubblefield stated

that “his plans include being a

volunteer coach and helping

young people learn to play the

game of basketball”.

I truly enjoyed interviewing

Coach Stubblefield, just as he

stated that being at the Fonde

Recreation Center brought back

fond memories for him, I also

had fond memories interviewing

my former basketball coach.

The Texas Southern University

Tigers Men Basketball program

won their first six SWAC ball-

games including a big win over

Jackson State University. For

third year coach Tony Harvey,

the Tigers have won close games

and came from behind and just

about any way to walk away

with win. It was down in Itta

Bena, Mississippi that the Tigers

fell behind early and could not

comeback as the Delta Devils

pulled to 6-1 and into a first

place tie with TSU and Jackson

State. The final count was 89-76

and easily the most points they

have allowed in conference play

this season.

With Jackson State and

Mississippi Valley scheduled to

play Saturday, TSU can take a

game lead on the loser of that

game with win over Alabama A

& M which has a 5-2 mark and

still in the chase.

Having a pretty good blend, the

Tigers have used the inside

strength of Travele Jones on the

boards along with all around

play of Kevin Galloway. The

sharp shooting of Lawrence

Johnson-Danner has come in

handy as well as former Jones

star Harrison Smith providing a

spark off the bench.

Two more homes games this

weekend and the Tigers will

have a chance to remain in the

running for a SWAC regular sea-

As the 2010 year came to a

close the good Lord took home

another metro-Houston area

great. On December 22, 2010

James Patrick Green passed

away after more than three years

of illness.

Born on June 30, 1955 to Lizzie

and James Green, Patrick as

family members called him went

on to grow up at Booker T.

Washington, graduating in 1974.

He went to earn his B.S. degree

from Prairie View A & M

University in 1979. James began

his teaching and coaching career

at Attucks Middle School where

he was named coach of the Year

in 1986.

With a love for photography it

was on the sidelines we first met

James. There he was taking pho-

tos of the majorettes and drill

team and provided a quality as

well as economical services for

those students. As the years

went on James retired from

coaching and teaching and spent

more time working on his photo

business. By that time he was

doing weddings and family por-

traits and the likes. Getting bet-

ter with age, Green began selling

his photos to newspapers and

magazines. So it was an easy

decision for us to make him the

chief photographer for A King-

size View Monthly Magazine.

We worked with Green until his

health began to fail in 2007.

Without a doubt we had some

great years together and no one

could beat Green with track

action shots.

Track and field was certainly his

first love and he made the most

of it. Working his way to

become the state’s most respect-

ed official starter, working the

world class TSU Relays for

years. He was Certified Athletic

Officials of the USA Track and

Field (USATF) Gulf Association.

In 1998 Green was honored by

the USATF Gulf Association

when he received the associa-

tion’s John “Doc” Phillips

Outstanding Officials Service

Award.

Noted as a caring man, Green

spent seven years caring for his

disabled younger brother until

his own health begin failing him

in 2007. The family also lost

Mrs. Lizzie Green in 2000 and

James Green Sr. is also said to

be ill.

James P. Green is survived by

his father James Green Sr., three

brothers Darrell, Michael and

Mark, two sisters Antoinette and

Cynthia, nephew Michael, plus

an uncle and aunts along with

plenty of cousins and friends.

It was wonderful working with

Green all those years. During

the home going services Rev.

Henry Carey III was short and to

the point. The James P. Green I

knew would have wanted it that

way!

I guess I like many others won-

dered why Jay Cutler looked and

acted the way he did during the

second half of the National

Football Conference champi-

onship game against the Green

Bay Packers. He was injured as

the fans were told but something

just didn’t seem right. He wasn’t

taped up, he wasn’t sitting on

the bench, nor did he have head-

phones on to encourage the

other two quarterbacks. No, he

just stood there with a sort of

disinterested face as the Bears

gave a gallant effort. After the

American Football Conference

title was won by Pittsburg,

instead of the talk concerning

the 45th Super Bowl, everyone

had an opinion about Cutler. It

seams as though the only topic

people wanted to discuss was

Cutler was worthless. People

questioned his toughness, his

ability to be a leader, his ‘soft-

ness’. I was just amazed at ath-

letes from different sports call-

ing out Cutler. He is by many

accounts, not a well liked foot-

ball player by many athletes in

the NFL. But the anger that was

generated by this decision not to

return to the game in the second

half left me wondering-when

does an athlete not attempt to

play with an injury? I remember

former teammates of mine who

tried and failed to re-enter ball

games with some serious

injuries. They loved the game so

much that they could never ever

see themselves being on the

sidelines during a game. They

just couldn’t see it see it. On the

high school level, no one wants

to bee seen as an injury-type guy

or gal that can’t finish a game

without getting hurt. That’s just

part of who you are; play until

physically you can’t go any-

more. The late Vince Lombardi

had his players so afraid of

missing time due to injury that

many of them played with seri-

ous injuries which led to respect

from players around the league.

That was wrong but let’s

remembers the time when those

things occurred. With today’s

physical treatment, some injuries

are just a few days from being

nearly healed. Concussions once

thought of as just headaches, are

seen as very dangerous injuries

and are treated as such. But the

bottom line is no one should

face judgment bases on their

reaction to an injury. No athlete

is neither a hero for playing with

an injury nor a goat for not giv-

ing it a try to play and stay in

the game. If Cutler’s injury was

serious enough to prevent him

from playing in the biggest

game of his career, then he made

the right decision for himself.

Until all the facts are known;

remember all of us were not on

that sideline so we don’t know

everything, roasting that man for

this is just plain wrong. He had

the doctors’ right there with him

and they made the decision for

him not to re-enter the game. I

know my body and no one will

tell me whether I should or not

continue to play with an injury. I

will never question any athlete

about an injury. That’s just not

my call and I won’t do it. This

questions a person’s credibility

and that’s just something we all

don’t have a right to do so.

Note-This column is dedicated

to the third anniversary of my

mother Gloria D. Chandler’s

death. I can still say with tears in

my eyes, I miss her so much.

She was great mother and even

That’s just the way I see it!

IS IT OKAY NOT TO PLAY WHEN INJURED?The WayI See It

By BIG John Chandler

Hey Houston, how’s your love

life holding up??? Did the holi-

days make it better or worse? If

everything is going smoothly

that’s a good thing my hats off

to you. If for some reason you

chose to make changes for the

new year, and maybe to go it

alone for a while that’s ok too.

Sometimes when we step back

and take a look at things in a

non pressured state, we will find

that we can make better deci-

sions, even though it may not

seem like it at the time. Going

into the month of February alone

can be quite an ordeal if you are

used to having a partner, a mate,

a significant other. February is

not only Black History month; it

is the lovers’ month because of

the most celebrated lovers’ holi-

day. Do I need to say it,

Valentines Day... For those of

you who can’t wait, it is some-

times more anticipated than

Christmas. Why??? Because

everyone wants to be loved or

belong to somebody, attached at

the hip, the old ball and chain.

It’s not quite that bad but you

know what I mean. There is no

perfect relationship, but as

known if two people love each

other then they will try and stay

together through the good and

the bad. If everything in your

relationship is ok, one hundred

percent of the time, I want to

know about it. If you are not in a

committed relationship this will

be a time to poke someone you

have had your eye on.

Sometimes Cupid’s arrow does

not do us justice. Is there some-

body you have eye for but not

sure if the feeling is mutual? I

guess the only way to really find

out is to test the waters. If for

some reason your personality

doesn’t allow you to make the

first move, call on a friend or

co-worker to break the ice. You

know the saying don’t be shy or

love will pass you bye. Have

you ever felt that you may have

let Mr. or Mrs. Right get pass

you because you didn’t make

that move? You can never really

know; but have you ever had

that feeling years down the line,

that she or he could have been

the one. You went one route and

it ended up a dead end or worst

like driving over a cliff. Did

STUCK! Nevertheless we put

our hearts out on the limb hop-

ing it won’t come crashing

is the next best thing. If you

have a love cherish it and treat it

like you would want to be treat-

something nice. If it is all about

material things then maybe this

person is not right for you. For

loves comes from the heart and

not the pocketbook. A nice card

should do. Make sure you join

Ms. Sheppard and I on

Wednesdays for in The Love

Corner where we discuss topics

concerning love and relation-

ships, and you can call in for

help or help those who might

need a little help. The show has

been a huge success. It happens

every Wednesday at 8 pm. You

can also join us for a Pre

Madgelean Bush was born

February 1, 1931 in Stevenson

Community just outside

Bellville, Texas. She is the fifth

of nine children born to Eddie

and Mathis Bush. Following a

turbulent child hood going back

and forth between relatives’

homes, Bush made her way to

Houston. As a teenager Bush

worked as a domestic worker

and with a catering service in

order to raise her daughter (the

late Kathryn Lois) and son

(Gregory Albert Bush). Fact is

it was at Greg’s home in

Humble with all her family sur-

rounding her on Christmas Day

First Lady Madge Bush went

home to be with God.

My mind quickly reflects back

to the first time I met Ms. Bush.

It was following a break-in at

the King Center and thieves had

stolen the uniform of the King

Center Youth football team.

Thanks to Ralph Cooper on

KYOK AM 1590 and Willie

Shamblee the owner of Club

WAS on Crosstimbers we were

able to raise some funds to help

toward getting new uniforms.

Later on Marcus Brigance came

forth from the Fun football

league and gave the King Center

boys a whole bunch of uniforms.

Back in 1980 we went over to

the King Center to take the

funds we had collected and I

saw this lady running behind a

kid down Sampson. So I went

inside and asked for Ms Bush

and they told me that was her

you seen running down the

street. It seems the youngster

had relieved himself under the

tree and Ms Bush was chasing

him to give him a reminder she

didn’t allow that. A few

moments later Ms Bush came

back huffing and puffing then

asked me what she could do for

me. When I told her what I was

there for she said ‘Thank God,

these kids are worrying me to

death about those football uni-

forms’. A year later we put on a

boxing show at PABA with the

help of both the King Center and

Rev. Ray Martin’s Boxing Gym.

That was aided by boxing pro-

moter Robert Turner of Abel

Ten. All this community service

caught the eye of the late Varee

Shields who was managing edi-

tion of the Houston Forward

Times. So a year later we started

writing for the Forward Times

on Mr. Shield’s recommenda-

tion.

After that we made it our busi-

ness to stay in touch with Ms

Bush and the King Center. Fact

in 1993 when Ms Bush celebrat-

ed 25 years of operation, King

Arthur’s Productions did their

video and played it before a

packed house with Governor

Ann Richards as the guest

speaker. Dr. David Scott of

Exxon was instrumental in help-

ing the King Center stay afloat

and worked hand and hand with

Ms. Bush. A few days after the

banquet, Ms Bush took the

advice of family and friends and

finally took a small vacation just

to rebuild her strength. We

spoke with her upon her return

and she told me she felt good

about her life’s work and had

made peace with the Almighty

God while on vacation. She

went overseas and told me she

stood on the equator while one

foot was in sand that was nearly

100 degrees hot and the other

foot was on land that was freez-

ing cold. Bush went on to say

the only way that could happen

it would have to be the work of

the Lord controlling nature.

That’s what I will always

remember about Ms Bush and

that hat she was wearing still

stands out.

Upon arriving in Third Ward the

next 65 years, Madge Bush

would set new standards as it

relates to community services.

On the eve of Dr. Martin Luther

King Jr. Assassination in 1968,

Ms. Bush had teamed up with a

small group of socially con-

scious citizens to open the com-

munity center. When King was

assassinated a day later they

decided to give it his name. Its

purpose was to help empower

and enrich the lives of the com-

munity residents through job

training, GED and educational

programs for both youths and

senior citizens activities. They

also added Day Care, drug and

alcohol counseling, upholstery,

ceramic, sewing, and typing

classes to name a few. Bush

using her outstanding vision

went onto to develop the Moses

Leroy Day Care Nursery. The

Mickey Leeland Crisis Nursery

and the Madge Bush

Transitional Housing facility for

Women and Children added to

the list of quality services. For

more than 35 years Bush served

at the Executive Director for the

Center before retiring in 2005.

Not once did her programs go

without her attention. Fact is

when funding came late Ms

Bush paid her staff out of her

pocket until federal funding

came. Having a true under-

standing of what it like to be

without Ms Bush wasted no time

in helping those in need.

Joining Boynton United

Methodist Church at an early

age Ms Bush made a deal with

the young pastor Robert Earl

McGee who is now the senior

pastor at Third Ward’s Trinity

United Methodist Church. It was

McGee who offered the eulogy

at Bush’s home going servic-

es.”Pastor I’ll get more involved

with the church if you become a

board member of the King

Center. The two came to terms

and it worked for the rest of Ms

Bush life.

McGee said he was truly

impressed with the passion Ms

Bush had for the least and the

lost. Ms Bush went on to serve

as member on several boards

during her tenure.

The social life of Madge Bush is

well documented as well as her

involvement with politics. She

served on numerous board of

directors and advisory boards at

the state and local level. She

found time to serve with the

PTO of Blackshear Elementary,

Ryan Junior High and yes Jack

Yates Senior High School. Bush

served as Precinct 247 Judge

and Democratic Party officer for

Harris County. One of the most

exciting days for Ms Bush came

when she attended the inaugura-

tion of Barack Obama.

She also attended several State

and National Democratic

Convention as a delegate and

had the opportunity to attend

three Democratic Presidential

Inaugurations and two guberna-

torial inaugurations. Bush spoke

before the United States House

of Representatives. The list of

awards won by Ms Bush includ-

ed North Houston

Frontiersmen’s Drum Major

Award, JACS National Volunteer

of the year (1996) and Houston

Pillar of the Community award

in 2001.

After serving as a member on

several ministries including the

Society of St. Stephens United

Methodist Women and the

senior’s Ministry, Bush was also

a member of the Order of

Eastern Star.

It was clearly and honor to have

known Ms. Bush and her

straight forwardness was a thing

of beauty. We shall cherish her

memories for as long as we live!
