Our minister, Fr Emmanuel Koyan is away making his annual retreat. Scholastics from different places gathered together in Christ Hall for their annual paper presentations on Ignatian Spirituality and the Society under the supervision of PCF, Fr Anto Muringathery. The scholastics had a fruitful intellectual sharing and discussion on various Ignatian themes. They have successfully completed their first phase of summer activities and have proceeded for the second and last phase of their summer activities at different venues. We extend a warm welcome to all of you as Christuraja School Alumni Association is organizing a one-day celebration, named ‘Malaparamba Fest’, on 10 May. Currently some beautification work of our front courtyard is in progress which will be completed shortly before the province days.

CHRIST THE KING CHURCHThe computerization of Christ the King parish is in full swing. Fr Shin is visiting the houses and helping out the computerization of all the parish documents. The support and cooperation of the parishioners are very much encouraging and inspiring. Our parish bagged the first prize in the CYMA Bible Kalolsavam held in Calicut. Congratulations to all the students and the Catechism Teachers who prepared them. Our Catechism Teachers arranged a one day programme called Vachananalam for the students of Std 1 to 5 in order to motivate and create interest in Bible through action songs, games etc. 50 students participated in the programme. One-day Training Programme for the Altar Boys was conducted under the guidance of Fr Shin and some of the senior CLC members to motivate them in their spiritual life. Fr Sunny Kunnappallil motivated the students with his enriching talk on the spirituality of the Altar Boys. Fr Shin prepared the people during the Lenten Season by giving the Lenten talks in the BCC units. All the Holy Week

Ceremonies went on in a meaningful, systematic way and a large number of parishioners and people from neighbourhood parishes participated in it with great devotion. CLC and the Youth group prepared and staged the dramatic presentation of the Resurrection of Jesus during the Easter service and for many it was a spiritual and memorable experience. Parishioners contributed Rs.27000/- as part of their Lenten observances for the treatment of the HIV AIDs patients in a centre called Pratyasa in Kannur. We thank God for all these Easter blessings and are extremely grateful to Christ Hall Community for their generous help and support in the Holy Week ceremonies. AMMA, an organization of mothers of our parish, organized a half- day art work shop for the students of our parish in which the famous artist and poet Mr Paul Kallanod guided the students tapping out their artistic skills and talents.

Shin KallunkalSOCIO-RELIGIOUS CENTRE We have just finished SANGAMOM - a one month programme of psycho-spiritual integration – with 13 participants, 11 Keralites and 2 non-Keralites, including one from Sri Lanka. Fr Joye James, Fr. Wilson Mulackal, along with Mr Prakash Chandy and Mr.KA Sebastian from ICTA helped us lead the participants to a deeper awareness of their own inner worlds. Self Esteem, group therapy, TA Basic, Script Workshop, REBT, Family Counselling, Serendipity Gospel Meditations and Interpersonal Styles, as well as daily Yoga and Meditation empowered them to move into the hidden recesses of their hearts and to discover the unknown energies – now freshly available to them! Last month there was a Franciscan influx into SRC with 17 seminarians joining the Self Esteem workshop and another 16 for LIFE SKILLS training conducted by Fr Pious Vachaparambil.SRC, in May, will see 6 programes in all – Personal Growth Workshop, NLP by Bosco SJ from Secunderabd, New Perspectives on Religious Life by Fr Kurien Kunnumpuram, Team Work, Self Esteem and Self Esteem retreat – 3 in English and 3 in Malayalam. LOYOLA, ALUVAApril was a month of experiments and rich experiences for both the batches of novices. The 2nd Years completed their Hospital Experiment by mid April, and returned to the novitiate just in time for the Holy Week ministry. For all the five of us the Hospital Experiment was quite challenging and at the same time highly enriching. We are deeply grateful to the M.C. Brothers of Karunalayam, Moolamkuzhy, and Mercy Home, Vellimadukunnu and the M.S.J. Sisters of Vimala Hrudaya Ashramam, Thuvoor for giving us an opportunity to join them for a few weeks in the wonderful ministry they are engaged in. During the Holy Week we helped out in the Parishes where we have been doing our Sunday ministry during the past year. We formally concluded our ministry in these parishes on the last Sunday of the month. Our involvement in the parishes has been a great learning experience for all of us. We went to four different parishes. All the parish priests have been very kind and magnanimous to us. The parishioners too, were very good to us. We would like to place on record our deep sense of gratitude to each of them. During the Easter week the 2nd Years received a very pleasant “gift”- a short & sweet home visit. It was not only a joyful experience; it also gave us a fresh awareness and deeper conviction about our vocation. Immediately after our home visits we had some insightful and enlightening classes on Religious Vows by Fr Jacob Madukakuzhy. The 1st Years are still away on their Mission experiment. While Henok is at our own St. Mary’s Parish Pariyaram, Amardeep and Nibin are under the wings of our zealous new pastors Dominic Palakeel and Sanil Mayilkunnel. According to reliable sources, all the three are doing well in their respective parishes.April brought home the two eminent ‘diaspora’ members of our community – Frs. E.J. Thomas and P.T. Mathew. Fr. E.J. was with us during the Holy Week; Fr. Mathew reached Loyola on 24th April. He is scheduled to be with us till the first week of June. We consider it a blessing to have these two stalwarts with us for a few weeks. Right now Fr. Immanuel Koyan is with us making his retreat in preparation for the Last Vows, under the guidance of Jacob Achan. A few others too blessed us with short visits - Fr. Anto Muringathery, Scholastics Sheise, Tomson, Roy Alex, Sharath, Ajeesh and Jose Pittappilly.

AKJM, KANJIRAPALLYThe annual examinations of Junior school, UP school and high school were conducted as usual, followed by public examinations for SSLC and Higher secondary sections. All our students who appeared for the SSLC have passed and a few secured A + in all the subjects. Higher secondary results are awaited. The management organized a Spoken English training program for the Junior school teachers as part of the attempt to use English as the only medium of communication in the school. Thanks to Frs V C George and Vargherse Anikuzhy whose rich experience and expertise in this line were great blessing to our teachers. The campus was full of noise in the morning hours of April since the ‘ASOVA’ group of senior citizens were organizing a month long training in athletics and various sports items for around 200 students from various schools around. Fr Varkeychan led a group of class leaders to take part in the Atmamithra camp in Kalady. Admission process is on for the High School and Higher Secondary School for 2014.

Ramlet ThomasST MICHAEL’S, KANNURRev. Dr Alex Vadakumthala, Bishop of Kannur was the chief guest of the evening Easter gathering arranged in St Michael’s on 20 April 2014. All the Jesuits from Kannur diocese participated in the gathering. During the thanksgiving speech Bishop spoke about his close association with the Jesuits from different parts of India. He also recalled the invaluable contributions of the Great Jesuit Missionaries of North Malabar. His simplicity and unassuming nature made us think that his style of functioning is very close to that of Pope Francis. Fr Dominic Madathaniyil took charge as the superior of the St Michael’s Community during the Holy Mass on 30 April. He is also the Director of the Nursery school. Dear Fr Dominic, we wish you all the best in your new responsibility! Thanks to Fr John Francis for all the services he has rendered to the Jesuit Community as its superior. During the Mass the community gratefully remembered what he has been to each one in the community. His leadership and gentle way of dealing with men and matters won special appreciation from all. Also thanks to Fr Gracious Stephen for shouldering the additional responsibility of the nursery school for the past two years in spite of his busy schedule. The construction of the St

Michael’s School Auditorium is nearing completion and the inauguration is scheduled to be held in the month of June 2014. All the 157 students sent for SSLC exam passed and 35 students secured A+ in all the subjects. A big thanks to Br KT Jose and Fr Gracious for their effective and fruitful leadership. Br KT Jose was given a grand send off by the staff and many teachers spoke about his contributions to the school. St Michael’s school was the valuation centre of the Higher Secondary Examinations during the month of April. Br Mathew Puthiedom had a fall in the garden and suffered a crack of the knee bone of his right leg. So his right leg is in plaster from ankle to the middle thigh. We wish him speedy recovery.

Gracious StephenS.M.FARM, PARIYARAMAs was done last year, Samskriti in collaboration with Mattul Little Flower Boys Home Alumni Trust organized a 5-day Social Awareness and Leadership Training (SALT Camp) at IRC in the last week of April. Forty five Dalit Christian students of classes 10,11,& 12 from 16 parishes of four Foranes of Chirakal Mission participated in the camp which was conducted by our Jesuit Scholastics, Brs. Steevenson Paul, Sharath Babu, Rephin Kamal and C.M.Jomon. With the typical dynamics of SALT camp including games, exercises and exposures, the camp was rated extremely beneficial by almost all participants. Their visit to HOPE, a centre for destitute, gave them social awareness, and to Samskriti Career Guidance Centre at Pilathara gave them real orientation for their higher education. Some of the participants who never addressed an audience proved their skill in public speaking by sharing their camp experiences with their parishners during the Sunday Mass. The scholastics managed the classes so well that the participants had only praise for them. Congratulations to all of them for their services to a marginalized group in the Jesuit Mission.Easter dinner taken together with the St.Michael’s community was memorable with the presence of the newly appointed Bishop of Kannur, who was invited to St Michael’s for both the communities. He was totally free and relaxed with us to narrate his experiences with Jesuits in India and at George Town University in Washington D.C. It was a fitting occasion for us to brief him of all our apostolates in Kannur diocese. He expressed particular interest in the proposed ministry of environment at the Illam of Samskriti.

AADI, ATTAPPADYAADI was bustling with activities for the last few months and from the last week of March till today we did not even have a breathing space. AADI organized an Aadivasi Vaidyar Training Programme on 27-29 March 2014. Fr P A Chako of Dumka Province took initiative to bring the president Dr P. P. Hemprom and the Secretary Miss Vasavi Kiro of Hedan (National Organization of Adivasi Vaidyas). 38 Vaidyas participated in the trining programmme. They exchanged their knowledge, experience and aspirations. Fr Jose Melu from Taru Mitra, Patna, shared his experience with indigenous medicine. Mr Shankar and Mr Jose, experts on medicinal plants, from Vanamoolika too helped in the process. As continuation of this process all the Vaidyas gathered on 12 April to plan the future course of action. It was decided that Vaidyas will form societies and register them to avail benefits from the Government to improve their skill and to make use of their knowledge for the better health of the world. So they are forming five different societies under the guidance of AADI.We had an Art Camp from 30 March to 10 April. Miss Anna Burzec, a Polish and her husband Stan from Goa guided 41 Adivasi children from 13 Oorus for 10 days through Mosaic Art with broken tiles and waste materials. They tried the skill on the steps of AADI kalakendram and now it looks beautiful like an art gallery. We had a Cultural Camp and Oorunarthal kalajatha from 20 -28 April. Mr Kuppuswami, the first and only Adivasi from Attappady, who passed out from School of drama led the camp. He brought out a street play, Anum, Pennum (male and female), which dealt with the issue of teenage marriage prevalent among the adivasis and its social implications. This was staged in 40 Oorus and was received well by the people.Aadi Gramotsavam on 01 May was a grand success. Around 1000 people participated in it. The presence of people from Ernakulam, Perinthalmanna, Kozhikode, Kozhinjampara as participants made this Gramotsavam a special experience. People danced, sung and shared their joys throughout the day. Fr Rajesh Punchathalackal represented Kerala Jesuits in the Mela. Fr P S Antony toiled day and night for over a month to make this event successful. This year the heat has caught up with us too. The survival of the plants we planted needed extra care. Thanks to Ms Harshavanti Bist who contributed Rs 10000/- to buy 250 pots for pitcher irrigation and also to Fr Rappai who contributed Rs

FROM THE CHINESE PROVINCEEASTER GREETINGS to one and all!!! After successfully completing my teaching assignment in our Asia-Pacific Juniorate in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, I was invited by the Parish Priest of St Francis Xavier Church, Bali, Indonesia, to substitute him at all the Holy Week and Easter Services in English. We were many Priests in the Cathedral on Holy Wednesday evening, concelebrating with the Bishop at the Chrism Mass. At all my Services, the huge Church was packed to overflowing with Indonesians and Foreigners, including a Goan-Mangalorean couple! The special feature in St Francis Xavier Church is the Blessing of Children after Holy Communion. Many rush forward for the Blessing, the tiny tots carried by either Father or Mother. Since we were in Hindu-majority Bali, at the end of the Easter Vigil and Easter Day Services, the whole congregation joyfully sang the refrain “JAYA YESU! JAYA NAAM!” as I sang the Hindi Bhajan. My elder brother and my youngest brother welcomed me at the airport around 1.00 a.m. on April 24. That very day I visited the members of my family in Ernakulam, our Companions in LUMEN/JYOTHIS and some Old Boys (of Montfort, Yercaud, & Loyola, Trivandrum). The next two days a Loyola-Tvm Old Boy drove me to SNEHABHAVAN and to the homes of different Old Boys in Kottayam, Pala and Kanjirapally, also to AKJM High School and SAMANVAYA. The Parish Priest of Infant Jesus School, Ernakulam, has booked me for Mass every Sunday till my departure for Vietnam on May 29. I met a lot of old friends after the Mass. I was happy to meet our Companions at LOYOLA, Alwaye, and ICTA-SANTHIGRAM, Kalamassery. A couple of Loyola Old Boys’ Get-togethers are lined up; also one of St Michael’s Old Boys and another of Montfort Old Boys... This Easter Season is a fitting time

to recall and relive good past experiences, yes multiple Blessings! It is a time for celebrating our companionship. May each and every one of us spread Easter Joy!

John FJ Manipadam FROM FRANCEThe major event of the month was the Diaconate Ordination of Vibin and Sooraj, along with ten other Jesuit scholastics by Mgr Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, the Auxiliary Bishop of Paris Arch Diocese in St Ignatius Church, Paris. We were privileged to have Fr Provincial, Schs. Tomson, Deepak and Joseph Mathew to witness this memorable event in our life. As newly ordained deacons we were given different responsibilities during the Holy Week liturgical ceremonies in our St Ignatius Jesuit Parish Church, Paris. At present both of us, Vibin and Sooraj, are busy with the preparation of the comprehensive exam which will be held in the end of June 2014.

Historic dual canonization of Popes In a historic match-up of papacies past and present, Pope Francis and emeritus Pope Benedict XVI honoured Popes John XXIII and John Paul II in the first ever canonization of two popes. For such a momentous occasion, the ceremony was actually quite short and surprisingly straightforward, with the added benefit that the relics of the two new saints were presented for universal veneration by the church for the first time. 93 official delegations attended the service which included an estimated 24 heads of state. Poland sent one of the largest delegations with the current president and two former presidents, including Lech Walesa, founder of the Solidarity movement

that toppled communism in Poland, which John Paul supported. The inter religious delegations included 20 Jewish leaders from the U.S., Israel, Argentina, Poland and Rome, as well as a Moslem delegation. Hundreds of Thousands also followed the ceremony on giant screens in some of the most picturesque spots of Rome as well as Rome’s Fiumuccino Airport. Religious chants rang out among thousands of people who spent the night in sleeping bags and picnic chairs in order to be first in line for Sunday’s ceremony, honouring two of modern Catholicism’s most influential figures. Pope Francis presided over the Mass and the canonization ceremony and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI concelebrated along with 150 cardinals and 700 bishops. It was the first time Benedict XVI joined Francis in celebrating Mass in public since his resignation in 2013. He had earlier attended the February ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica in which Pope Francis had installed 19 new cardinals, but as a spectator. The preliminary part of the ceremony began with prayers, hymns and culminates with the chanting of the rhythmic Litany of Saints, like a roll call of the church’s saints, each one followed by the refrain “Ora pro nobis,” or “Pray for us.” After Pope Francis and concelebrants proceeded to the altar, the canonization rite began. The head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the causes of saints, Cardinal Angelo Amato, ritually petitioned the pope three separate times to include John XXIII and John Paul II among the saints. In the rite for beatification, there is only one such petition. The three repeated requests RV Asia Newsletter, for canonization “signify the importance of this celebration,” noted the Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi.

Pope Francis then said: “For the honour of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II be saints and we enrol them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole church. In the name of the Holy Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Relics of the two new saints were then brought to the altar. In the case of John Paul, it was the same relic — his blood — used for his 2011 beatification. For John XXIII, it was a small piece of skin taken after his body was exhumed for his 2000 beatification. Relics — the physical remains of a new saint or things he or she touched in life — are used to help the faithful venerate. Card. Amato then thanked Francis and asked him to draw up an official document attesting to the canonization. Francis responded “We so decree” and the rite ends with the singing of the “Gloria.” The Mass then proceeded as usual. In his homily Pope Francis praised his two predecessors as “men of courage”. Paying tribute to the two new saints as “priests, bishops and popes of the 20th Century”, he said that they lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them. For them, God was more powerful.
