President’s Message I attended the tour to the Western Antique
Aeroplane and Automobile museum on
March 16th, and all I can say is “Wow,
this museum has a little bit of everything!”
We met the BMW club in Troutdale, and
then toured down I-84 to Hood River. We all parked our cars
in rows in front of the museum, it was a great place for a photo
op. There were about 20 BMWs and 11 Mercedes-Benz. The
BMW club is a great group and we plan to do another event
with them soon.
Inside the museum, we were treated to one of the largest
collections of still-flying antique airplanes and still-driving
antique automobiles in the country. The antique airplanes
have been meticulously restored from the inside out. Among
the aircraft, the crown jewel of the collection is the 1917
Curtiss JN-4D “Jenny”. They were the trainer of choice for
both the U.S. and England during World War I.
The collection of antique automobiles vary in age from 1899 to
the 1960’s. The oldest car is an 1899 Locomobile Steam Car.
There is one special Mercedes-Benz in the collection, a 1955
300SL Gullwing owned by Bob Ullrich. This SL was
previously owned by the singer Pat Boone. Bob purchased
the car and drove it in the 1960’s, and then put it in storage. It
recently emerged from its slumber and was mechanically
recommissioned by local specialist Tom Daniels. Sitting on
the original rudge wheels, with tired but presentable white
paint and a ‘tuck and roll’ interior, it was a refreshing sight to
see among the aircraft and American cars.
I hope to see many of you at our Modern Classics event on
April 6th. This tech event is going to provide our members a
PhD in classic Mercedes-Benz ownership. Breakfast and
lunch will be provided. Plus you’ll see Barry Corno’s 1983
380SEC — the cover car from the March/April issue of The
Star magazine!
We are excited to partner with Mercedes-Benz of Beaverton
on their Grand Opening reception on Thursday April 18th. Our
members will display vintage Mercedes automobiles in the
showroom, with German food, wine and music. If you are
interested in displaying your classic Mercedes, contact me at
503-708-0397.
Our club historian Jim Thompson is looking for any photos
from Portland Section events. This section was founded in
1976, and Jim is looking to grow the archive of Portland
Section history. If you have any old photos or other material,
please contact Jim at 503-633-2366.

Auto Detailing Event at Gallagher Auto Spa
Bonhams is to sell ‘the only works Mercedes W196 GP car out of captivity’ at its Goodwood Festival of Speed auction in the U.K. on July 12th.
Bonhams' auction company is calling it “not only one of
the most significant motor cars of the 20th Century but
also the most important historic Grand Prix racing car
ever offered at public auction.”
It is the 1954 2½-liter straight-8 Mercedes-Benz W196
einsitzer– chassis number '00006/54' – in which five-
times World Champion Driver Juan Manuel Fangio won
both the 1954 German and Swiss Grand Prix races.
These great victories were the first two to be achieved
in succession by the frontier-technology Mercedes-Benz
factory Formula 1 Grand Prix team in its postwar racing
come-back. Chassis '00006' also has special significance
as the first open-wheeled slipper-bodied postwar Mercedes
-Benz ever to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix race – having
made its debut in that German GP.

Event Recap: Tour of Ron Tonkin’s Collection
On March 2nd, Portland Section members toured the pri-
vate car collection owned by longtime Ferrari dealer Ron
Tonkin. Stepping into the warehouse, our eyes adjusted to
the sight of rows of vintage and modern Ferraris, as well as
pristine examples from Maserati, Alfa-Romeo and Lambor-
ghini. Our host Art Smith, General Manager of Ron Tonkin
Gran Turismo, allowed our group to roam freely among the
50 cars in the collection and he answered our questions.
In one corner crouched Ferrari supercars including a Ferrari
Enzo, Ferrari F50 and the last Ferrari 288GTO to roll off the
assembly line. Along the wall was a row of classic Ferrari’s
including a yellow 1967 330GTS that is Mr. Tonkin’s first
and favorite Ferrari. In another corner, an ultra-rare Lam-
borghini Muira SV. In between lined in tight rows sat a Ma-
serati Mistral and Bora, a Vector, and a Ford GT40. Mr.
Tonkin’s Ferrari F40 and 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter coupe were
not in the garage as they are on loan to the LeMay Mu-
seum in Tacoma.
On the catwalks above, many of us paused to get some
overhead pictures and linger in the lounge area. We
soaked in one of the world’s finest collections of Italian
supercars, vintage cars, and production sports cars. As
we walked back into the daylight after the tour, we re-
flected on what an honor it was to see this exceptional
collection and are thankful that Mr. Tonkin is open to
share it with others. We thank Art Smith for hosting our
group. Due to space limitations, we had to cap the num-
ber of attendees at 30. We know many more club mem-
bers wanted to attend, so we are working to schedule a
second tour of this collection in the future. Watch this
space.
