“Bless This Home” Sermon SeriesWe begin a new Academic School Year with the start of school on August 20th. As a means of blessing and encouraging

all our families and members in this new school year, we will seek our Lord Jesus Christ’s blessings through a special four-part sermon series, “Bless This Home.” This series focuses on four of the Beatitudes from Matthew, Chapter 5.

“Bless This Home” will encourage us to intentionally include Jesus in our conversations, to grow in our family worship and prayer life, and bless how we encourage our children and each other into a deeper faith walk with the Lord.

We will all be challenged to think through our priorities, our values in terms of what is most important to us, and our relationships with one another as well as the cost of discipleship, the cost of following Jesus in all we say and do.

From the 135th Anniversary TeamAt the last meeting of

the 135th Anniversary team, we considered Romans 8:28 - And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.

The team then talked a little about how some things have worked “together for good” at Trinity over the years. Jean Minsch came to Trinity in June of 1965 and hasn’t left yet. She’s been involved in lots of things here through the years, and she’s taught 1st grade Sunday School continuously since 1966. That is truly immeasurable blessing.

Our new Education Center opened in 2011. Construction was delayed time and time again as we negotiated permits with the City of Houston. With every delay, the price of steel went up—until the permits were finally granted and the price of steel went down. God allowed us to build out the second story on that building. Today, our K-4 and two Pre-K classes, as well as a beautiful library, are on that level. Again, immeasurable blessing.

The Peace-Filled Quilters Invite You to Celebrate the 1st Heavenly Birthday of Allen Rogers

Allen was the inspiration for this quilt group. To date we have made 50 quilts for members and friends of our Trinity family who are ill. Allen would have been 73 this August, and we’re honoring him with this special ministry. If you’d like to contribute to this ministry, mark your check Peace-Filled Quilters and drop it in the offering plate. There will also be birthday cake and fine fellowship after the 8:15 a.m. service on August 3.

Trinity Prays! Potluck Luncheon 9/28/14We had about 50 people last year praying for all of Trinity’s families in our School,

Early Childhood Center and Church. Every day, a member of our Trinity Prays! team prayed for each one of us.

The prayers went up to our heavenly Father’s throne of mercy and grace and the blessings came down in the love of Jesus!

Imagine this year 100 of us or maybe even 150 of us in prayer every day for all of Trinity! What a mighty blessing in our LORD this will be!

Stephen Ministry - Practical AdviceIn addition to the fifty hours of initial training required to be a Stephen Minister, we

regularly participate in continuing education as we seek to hone our skills and better serve the needs of the congregation. On Tuesday, June 17, Trinity Stephen Ministers had the special privilege of hearing Gale Kennebrew, Director of Chaplaincy and Pastoral Education at MD Anderson, speak about her work at MD Anderson and the many ways it complements the mission of Stephen Ministry. She shared that one of the main goals of the chaplaincy is to minister to the patient’s (and their family member’s) spiritual dimensions; which she defines as “the way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose and the way they experience their connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature and to the sacred.” This definition helps to support patients and help them to make peace with all aspects of their lives, regardless of religious affiliation or church membership. One of the ways they accomplish this is by understanding who these people are and honoring whatever beliefs they have by meeting them where they are (known in Stephen Ministry as validation). There are special places throughout the hospital designated for different faiths and even atheists to go and pray or meditate or get in touch with their spiritual side and someone is available 24/7 to listen, support and care.

Gale mentioned that addressing the spiritual needs of patients is just as critical as addressing their physical needs because there is a growing body of research that shows that healing spiritual/emotional issues has a significant impact on the person’s physical healing. It helps them get to a place of peace and hope, whether they have days or years yet to live. She described the partnership that her chaplains have with the doctors, noting that the chaplains even have special codes that they can put on a patient’s medical chart to indicate to the physician the patient’s spiritual/mental health.

In addition to sharing tips about active listening and ways that Stephen Ministry can complement the Chaplaincy program at MD Anderson, she also shared some practical advice for anyone who might find themselves in the hospital or facing a serious illness.

• Put a card in your wallet with emergency contact information, as well as that you are a member of (insert name of church here) and the church’s phone number. This helps the hospital to get in touch with the pastoral staff and helps get you access to spiritual care including prayer!

• Have an “advance care planning document” that conveys your wishes and desires for your treatment —make sure your family is aware that this document exists and what it contains. This ensures that you have a voice, even if you are physically incapacitated.

• If you are a family member or caregiver for a loved one in the hospital—listen to the wants and desires of the sick person, close your mouth, suspend judgment and just be in touch with their humanity!

• Finally, hearing is the last sense to go, so do not talk about them as if they are not in the room and/or can’t hear you! • You can contact the chaplaincy office at MD Anderson by calling 713.792.7184 if you have further questions.

LSS News – Dressed & Blessed by the Beaumont Foundation

We need to shout about this one from the rooftops. The generous 2013 grant of $518,400 [LSS] received from the Beaumont Foundation of America (BFA) provides school clothing for 1,728 children LSS serves in foster care in Texas. Half the amount was distributed in January 2014, with the balance in August 2014. Each child has a stipend of $150 twice a year to spend on new clothing that they select themselves, with assistance from their grateful foster parents or supervisors.

Prayers and Promises by Pastor David Leeland

As I write this article, I’m on one of the last days of my “stay-cation” vacation. We’ve gotten a lot done around our home and have made new lists of projects to come. Today, I helped a neighbor repair part of our shared fence with some new boards and some judiciously placed screws and nails. The results turned out better than expected! Hurray! Praise the LORD!

There’s a Scripture from Romans 8 that tells us how the Holy Spirit prays perfect prayers on our behalf especially when we don’t know how to pray or what to pray for.

We find ourselves in these situations when the results are not better than expected, in fact, they’re not even what we hoped or expected. They’re less and when they’re like that we tend to wonder not only what happened but where’s God in all of this?

In a communication course for the workplace, the instructor put up this equation:When E > R = D.

When Expectations are greater than Reality this equals Disappointment! I once used this formula with a group. As I said, “When Expectations are greater than Reality, this equals . . .” They all spontaneously shouted, “Disaster!”

Disappointment! Disaster! Often when things don’t turn out the way we hoped or expected, we might even catastrophize them, blow them out of proportion and truly make a mountain out of a molehill.

Thank God for the Holy Spirit! The Spirit of our living, resurrected, ascended and reigning Lord and Savior Jesus Christ takes over and prays for us with the grace of Jesus and the love of our heavenly Father.

St. Paul writes in Romans 8:26-28: 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose. [ESV]

These three verses pack a ton of promises from our gracious God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

¾ The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness.

¾ The Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

¾ The Father who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Holy Spirit. ¾ And the Holy Spirit intercedes for us according to the will of God, our heavenly Father. ¾ For all who love God, all things work together for good because we are called according to His purpose in Christ

Jesus, our Rock and our Redeemer.The trouble with unmet expectations is not that the results can be less than what we want or different from our desires.

The trouble with unmet expectations is when what we expect is not what the LORD wants or knows is good for us. Our hearts and minds are not in line or in sync with His plans and purposes for our lives.

All of us will face many challenges and hardships in this life. No one is exempt from the tribulation of this world. And, sometimes it’s hard to know anything about the will of God when we’re in the middle of hardship or pain.

What we can know no matter what, no matter how we think or how we feel or what we’re going through, is that our Lord Jesus is with us to the end of the Age to shepherd us and guide us and His Holy Spirit indwells us and is praying His perfect prayers on our behalf to our Heavenly Father’s throne of grace and mercy.

Thank YOU, Jesus, thank YOU, for YOUR Holy Spirit. Amen.

the Teacher Call Committee has done and experienced throughout the new teacher search process. We asked, sought, and the door was opened. God is good and we are pleased to tell you about our newest additions to the TLS teaching staff.

Alec Kemnitz will be joining us this coming school year as the 6th grade homeroom teacher. He will be responsible for teaching math and science to the 5th and 6th grade, and religion to 6th grade.

Alec is a recent graduate from Concordia, Austin with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. Last year he taught English, Social Studies and Mathematics to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Bethany Lutheran in Naperville, IL. Alec is excited to have found a school where his gifts will be utilized.

Interestingly, Alec attended Trinity as a young boy. He remembers being a student in Mrs. Eva Zoch’s class. Alec comes from a family of teachers, his parents currently teach at Lutheran High North. He enjoys playing soccer and was on the Concordia Austin’s Men’s Soccer team. He would love to help coach the TLS soccer team.

Alec is excited about joining our church, being a part of the staff, and can’t wait to meet the students.Christine Eilers was born and raised in Seattle, WA. She attended Concordia Lutheran

Elementary School for 8 years and had loving teachers who really made a positive impression on her. She began piano lessons at an early age, and loved to sing even as a very young child. Her love of music and performing continued throughout her high school years and into college at Concordia University in Portland, OR and at Concordia University in St. Paul, MN. While at Concordia St. Paul, Christine studied pipe organ with Dr. Paul Manz and took conducting courses.

After graduating from college, Christine accepted a Call to Faith Lutheran Church and School in Tucson, AZ. She taught there 6 years - two years each of Kindergarten, 2nd Grade, and 5th Grade and was also the school choir director. During that time, she directed four all-school musicals, coached girls’ volleyball, and was both the organist and adult choir director for the church.

In 1983 Hawaii called! At that time, both of Christine’s sisters were married to Navy men who were stationed at Pearl Harbor and with a past family history of life on Oahu, Christine accepted a teaching and music position with Our Savior Lutheran School in Aiea. She was Called to teach 4th grade and direct the school choir.

In 2000, Christine accepted a position as the Education Coordinator for the Honolulu Symphony. While there she prepared lessons for thousands of school students who traveled to the Blaisdell Concert Hall to hear world class music. During that same year, Christine was also offered a position with the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus.

While the Symphony position was a wonderful and fulfilling experience, Christine longed to teach in the classroom again. In 2005 she accepted a Call to Our Redeemer Lutheran School in Honolulu where she taught 2nd grade and directed the school choir. Unfortunately, the 65 year old school downsized and ultimately closed in 2013.

To Christine, teaching is a definite life calling and she is excited Trinity Downtown Houston has Called her to teach 2nd grade. She looks forward to becoming part of this vibrant congregation and school community.

Skin Cancer in ChildrenMany of you may have seen this article in the Sunday,

4/27/14, edition in the Houston Chronicle, but I’m going to try to briefly (that’s difficult for me as many of you know) cover the contents of the article. Melanoma (four (4) people I love and respect have or have had melanoma) and the lives of children are still very important subjects in my life and I had surgery for a “precursor” (or Stage “0”) of melanoma some years ago, which I know I mentioned before. I have also written an article on skin cancer before, but this article really “caught my eye.” You may think it’s a little late to cover this subject, but it’s something I think is appropriate to share at any time of the year! If you have children in your family or you are a caretaker of children, please take note and use this as a review.

According to the article, “pediatric melanoma, rare but becoming more common, is a serious but treatable disease” in children. The author related the story of a three (3) year old girl living in Brownsville, whose Mom noted her child itching and picking at “an ugly pimple” on her thigh. The lesion was diagnosed as a wart, but it “resisted treatment, growing bigger, and changing color, from white to pink to red.” A dermatologist was consulted and the child was referred to the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Center and it was found that the girl had melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

It has been only recently that melanoma could be associated with children. It is usually a serious and sometimes deadly issue in adults. However, a study in 2013 found that although rare, it’s increasingly being diagnosed in children: “U.S. pediatric cases rose 2% a year between 1973 and 2009, from a total of less than 250 a year then to about 500 now.” Increases have also been noted in England, Sweden and Australia.

M.D. Anderson sees more children than anywhere else in the nation because it gets so many referrals from physicians who can’t understand why children and adolescents are getting a disease that scientists say usually takes a decade to develop, usually related to too much exposure to the sun. According to a pediatric oncologist at M.D Anderson, it’s sad, because even now, only a few doctors specialize in this disease in children and this physician treats most of the center’s youngest patients.

“Melanoma develops when skin cells called melanocytes become abnormal and multiply in an uncontrolled way. The cells, which normally give skin its color and protect the deeper levels from sun damage, form a mass of tissue, or tumor, when they’re multiplying uncontrollably that can spread and damage healthy tissue.”

The reasons for the increase in pediatric cases are not clear. There is speculation without supporting data that it may involve the depletion of the ozone layer, which absorbs most of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. The oncologist notes that more skin gets exposed but there is also improved awareness. “It is now known that melanoma is not just an adult disease.”

Unfortunately, melanoma is not an easy diagnosis in children. It is mistaken for warts or mosquito bites AND “pediatric melanoma looks quite different from the adult disease, often well-defined instead of irregularly pigmented.” A study in 2011 found that 60 percent of children diagnosed with melanoma did not meet the common melanoma-detection criteria (“ABCD” warning signs of asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation and diameter of over six (6) millimeters).

Also, in children younger than 10 years old, it usually doesn’t show up in sun-exposed areas. So it is often diagnosed late and, unfortunately, this is not a good thing. A recent study found that melanoma also spreads more quickly in children than adults. The oncologist at M.D. Anderson estimates that a third to a half of such child patients arrive with a delayed diagnosis, something that is not difficult to understand. “Warts are common, pediatric melanoma isn’t” says the oncologist.

I will continue this subject next month. But, let us PRAISE OUR LORD! The three (3) year old child mentioned in the beginning of this article is now six (6) years old and is in REMISSION!

Trinity Member, Kathleen Schmidt, Wins Silver Medal in Transplant Games of America

The Transplant Games of America® were held in Houston, Texas, July 12th - 15th.

The Transplant Games of America® is a biennial event held in the United States to recognize the tremendous accomplishments of individuals whose lives have been affected by eye, organ, and tissue donation. This festival-style event brings athletes, living donors, donor families, as well as members of the amazing medical community involved in transplantation together to promote awareness of the life-changing impact that donation represents today.

The transplant games are handled similar to the Olympic Games. On the evening of July 12th, the opening ceremonies were held at the BBVA Compass Stadium. Kathleen Schmidt, member of Trinity and recipient of a double lung transplant

on February 8, 2008, was part of Team Texas. There were teams from various states or combined states. There were three folks there from Team Australia representing International Transplant Games.

Kathleen felt very fortunate to be able to play a small part in these games.The games had various sport activities such as 5K, Badminton, Ballroom Dancing,

Basketball, Bowling, Corn hole (bean bag toss), Cycling, Golf, Racquetball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Texas Hold ‘em, Track and Field, Trivia Pursuit, and Volleyball. The 5K is a medal event for transplant recipients and living donors, but also for anyone and everyone to run in! The rest of the events were for recipients and living donors. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were awarded!

Kathleen said “Since I knew I wasn’t able to participate in the sports, Zumba or Ballroom Dancing, I signed up for the Trivia challenge. Thanks to my teammates, we won the silver medal.”

There were over 70 recipients, living donors, donor families and supporters who registered with Team Texas.

Ladies Circle Ministries The monthly gathering of the Ladies Circle will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday,

August 7, in Room 205. Our Christian Growth program will be a report on the recent LWML Texas District convention held in Frisco, Texas, June 20-22. Representing our Ladies Circle at the convention were Debbie Leonard as delegate and Kim Flaviani as alternate. Several other Trinity members in attendance at the convention will also share some of their memories.

Serve The Lord With GladnessTrinity congregation is seeking volunteers to serve in the 8:15 and 11:00 a.m. worship

services in the sanctuary. You can serve on a regular basis or as a substitute. Some of the areas where help is needed are:

• Words of Welcome - Give the opening welcome and announcements at the 8:15 and 11:00 a.m. services approximately once a month or serve as a substitute.

• Children’s Message - Present the Children’s Message at the 8:15 and 11:00 a.m. services approximately once a month or serve as a substitute.

• Lay Prayer (Fifth Sunday) - Give the Prayers of the Church at either the 8:15 or 11:00 a.m. service when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.

• Crucifer, Torch Bearers, and Acolytes - Carry the cross or torches in the opening and closing processional. Volunteers can include family units.

Church Worker Grants AvailableTrinity Ladies Circle Ministries is pleased to

support the education of communicant members of Trinity Lutheran Church who are enrolled at a Lutheran college or university with the intention of entering full-time ministry in the church. Flu Vaccine Clinic for TLC, TLS and TLEC - 2014We are blessed to be able to offer a Flu Vaccine Clinic again

this year through the Texas Vaccine Institute. INFLUENZA and the complications can be DEADLY! It is important that individuals who work in schools or any enclosed environments are more exposed than others to get infectious diseases. Individuals at risk for contracting the flu are children younger than five (5) years old, especially those younger than two (2) years old, pregnant women, people with medical conditions that include asthma, diabetes (Type 1 or 2), heart and lung disease and especially those that are 65 years old and older. Getting the flu vaccine is considered a PREVENTATIVE HEALTH MEASURE all of us should take!

For the 2014 – 2015 Flu Season, Texas Vaccine Institute will be offering a quadrivalent vaccine (the vaccine will contain the four (4) strains of influenza expected this flu season).

Beginning TUESDAY, AUGUST 26, sign up sheets will be in the school hall near the entrance to the Middle School Office/gymnasium, Church Foyer, Narthex and in the Early Childhood Center near the School Nurse’s Office.
