OVERVIEW This is a highly reliable dual channel vibration monitor which monitors the shaft vibration of

rotating machinery.

Both a 10-slot rack mounting type and a single-unit independent type with a built-in power supply

are available so that it can respond flexibly to any system design from medium and small scale

rotating machinery to TSI. The monitor accepts signals detected by a transducer and displays them

on LCD.

It is also possible to set ALERT and DANGER alarm levels independently to detect machine

failures early on and inform the operator of these failures. It has a built-in self-diagnostic function

to inform the operator of input transducer failures, thereby preventing rotating machinery from

false shutdowns.

FEATURES

INTERCONNECTION OF I/O TERMINAL BOARD

• Do not use the blank terminals.

INTERCONNECTION OF TRANDUCER

Connection of signal transmission cable

• For interconnection between the driver and the monitor, or between the driver and

safety barrier, and safety barrier and monitor, make sure to use 3-core shielded

cables or pair shielded standard 3-wire instrument cables, since the signal

transmitted is weak.

(Do not use unshielded cables or non-pair shielded multicore cables as the

measured values could be affected by external noise.)

Recommended cables

Cable Recommended Note

CVVS (3-core shielded cable)

Excellent

Recommended cabling as per API st’d 670

Normal: Silver-plated braid

Recommended: Copper tape shielded (Core wire: Soft copper wire)

Use conduit pipe (cable rack) for wiring.

INSTRUMENT CABLE (Pair shielded standard 3-wire)

Good

Although vibration and displacement signals can be transmitted in one instrument cable, use separate cables, because a high vibration signal exerts injurious influence over other displacement and vibration signals.

Recommended: Outside shield of aluminum or copper tape.

• Provide separate cabling for pulse signals (phase marker, revolution) and for

displacement and vibration signals.

• Avoid running signal transmission cables together with control and power cables.

• Install all cables in conduit pipes or on cable racks.

5. DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTIONS VM-5K

-13-

5-1 DISPLAY

Measured vibration values, alarm set values, and sensor set gap voltage are normally displayed on

individual LCD for each channel.

5-2 ALARM FUNCTIONS ALERT alarm, DANGER alarm, OK (input abnormal) alarm and GAP ALARM are contact-output

and displayed on LEDs.

• Alarm limit values are input and displayed separately for each channel.

• GAP alarm is output at the ALERT alarm contact by OR voting logic.

• Alarm is output separately for each channel, if the VM-5G Single Unit Instrument

Rack and VM-5Y Relay Module Unit have an SPDT relay contact arrangement.

In case of a DPDT relay, alarm outputs by OR voting logic between CH1 and CH2.

5-3 DANGER (DAN) ALARM A measured value exceeding the DAN alarm set values causes alarm output at the DAN contact

and DAN alarm display.

For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

5-4 ALERT (ALE) ALARM A measured value exceeding the ALE alarm set values causes alarm output at the ALE contact and

ALE alarm display.

For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

5-5 OK (INPUT ABNORMAL) ALARM When the level of the signal from the transducer becomes abnormal, OK alarm outputs and LED is

flashing. (Flashing interval : 2Hz) It is also activated when excessive signal input from sensor, in

this case flashing interval vary 1Hz. This condition is maintained by the off-delay timer for approx.

15 sec. after the level of the transducer signal has returned to normal.

5-6 GAP ALARM When the level of the signal from the transducer comes to lie outside the set range of GAP alarm,

ALERT alarm is contact-output and the ALERT alarm lamp lights.

For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

• GAP ALARM outputs between it and the ALERT alarm by OR voting logic.

5-7 ALARM DELAY FUNCTION To prevent output of false DAN/ALE alarm due to noise, etc., a delay time can be specified

separately for each channel.

For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

Page 21: VM-5 SERIES MONITOR MODEL VM-5K DUAL · PDF fileMANUAL NO. 29503E4.2 Published in Jun.1996 Revised in Apr.2010 VM-5 SERIES MONITOR MODEL VM-5K DUAL VIBRATION MONITOR INSTRUCTION MANUAL

5. DESCRIPTION OF FUNCTIONS VM-5K

-14-

5-8 FIRSTOUT DISPLAY • Installation in VM-5H3, 5W1 Instrument Rack

Causes the alarm lamp of the channel that first output alarm to flash. • Installation in VM-5G Single Unit Instrument Rack

Causes the lamp of the alarm first output to flash. For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

• An alarm lamp set flashing by the First-out Display function cannot be reset by pressing the RES (RESET) key. Reset by shorting between the RES and COM terminals.

• It is necessary to keep short circuit of the terminals for more than one (1) second to operate these functions.

5-9 SEQUENCE FUNCTION To prevent alarm output due to excessive vibration generated during starting and stopping of the machine, this function expands the DANGER alarm and ALERT alarm set ranges by shorting between the SEQ. and COM terminals.

• The machine is not protected if the alarm set value exceeds 110% of the monitor range due to operation of the sequence circuit.

• It is necessary to keep short circuit of the terminals for more than one (1) second to operate these functions.

5-10 BYPASS FUNCTION Used to disable alarm output while setting the alarm parameters, or during maintenance/inspection work. The alarm BYPASS lamp flashes or lights during this operation. Set by turning the BYPASS switch to ON.

• While BYPASS FUNCTION is in operation, the machine is not protected.

5-10-1 DANGER BYPASS Cuts off DANGER alarm. While cut off, the DANGER alarm and BYPASS lamps are flashing. This function is activated by means of the DANGER BYPASS switch. For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.

• If mounted in the VM-5H3 or VM-5W1 Instrument Rack, all units in the instrument rack can be set collectively to DANGER BYPASS. For details refer to VM-5H3 or VM-5W1 Instrument Rack instruction manual.

5-10-2 CH1 BYPASS DANGER alarm, ALERT alarm, OK alarm, display and recorder output of CH1 are cut off. While cut off, the OK lamp goes off and the BYPASS lamp lights. This function can be activated by means of the CH1 BYPASS switch. For details refer to 7. PARAMETER SETTING on page 19.
