Using a safe Car Seat is a gesture of love that can save your Child’s Life

The first general indication is: ALWAYs use AN INFANT CAR seAT on every single trip you take, even short ones, starting with your baby’s first ride home from the hospital.

The law in force requests the obligatory use of an infant car seat until a child reaches a height of 150 cm.

It is very important that parents understand the importance of the use of infant car seats as a form of prevention and protection of their children’s health, as well as a true gesture of love. Holding your baby in your arms during a car trip may seem a natural

The use of a

gesture, however, in the case of an impact or sudden braking, even if the car is travelling at moderate speed, the child’s body weight increases manifold on account of the force of acceleration, making your embrace ineffective in restraining it. The law indicates different types of infant car seats to be used according to the child’s weight.

Some safety tips• Always check that the infant car

seat is correctly positioned as indicated in the user’s manual and keep the manual in a safe and handy place for future reference. Before purchasing your baby’s car seat,

check that it bears the obligatory mark of conformity to the european standards.

• Always follow carefully the instructions for use enclosed with the product. A correct use (fitting the child car seat into the car and fastening the child into it) is the only way to avoid the risk of serious injuries in the case of accidents.

• Always use an appropriate child car seat for transporting a child in the car, even for short journeys.

• Always check that the child car seat is fitted correctly with the car safety belts, and that the latter are tensioned correctly.

• It is always best to put the child in the car and take it out from the side next to the pavement. For this reason an infant car seat should be preferably placed on the left-hand side of the car, possibly on the back seat.

• If you place a group 0+ infant car seat on the seat next to the driver’s, remember to deactivate the front air bag, and be careful in placing the infant car seat on the rear seat, if your car has lateral airbags. An inflating airbag produces a violent impact that could be very dangerous for a small child

Group 0+ infant car seats, for children from 0 to 13 kgThe Baby should be positioned in the car in a rear-facing position in order to

reduce the risk of injury to baby’s neck in the event of an impact. This is the safest position of all and it is recommended to adopt it for as long as possible. When the child weighs about 13 kg, she begins to feel uncomfortable with the feet touching the seat backrest and, moved by its growing curiosity for the outside world, will try to turn round and watch the road. This is the time to switch to a Group 1 infant car seat.

Group 1 infant car seat, for children from 9 to 18 kgThis type of seat should be preferably placed on the back seat of the car, in the

middle or on the car side next to the pavement: in fact the car side next to the centre of the road is statistically more dangerous and exposed to impacts. Infant car seats of group 1 have a reclinable backrest that allows for a more comfortable position of the head during sleep.

Group 2/3 infant car seat, for children weighing 15 to 36kgThis type of car seat can also be placed on the back seat of the car, in the middle

or on the car side next to the pavement. This type of car seat come either with a backrest, for extra comfort, or a pillow shaped seat that allows to fasten the child by using the car safety belt.

Child Car seat

A child must always be transported in a car with an appropriate restraint system, which consists in a child car seat specifically designed for car transportation that is approved to the regulations in force.

A child travelling in a car without a child car seat, or in a child car seat that is not fitted correctly, may be seriously injured also in case of minor incidents or sudden braking. The child risks being violently thrown from the seat, hitting the dashboard, the windscreen or the front seats. For a child travelling without child car seat the risk of suffering mortal or very serious injuries is seven times higher than for an adult.

Apart from being compulsory by law, the use of a child car seat is also an act of civil conduct and love that can save the child’s life.

Why use a Child Car Seat?

At the age of 8-9 months, children’s feet have a surface sensitivity, which is greater than that of the hands and therefore represents baby’s main exploration tool. For this reason, children at this age should wear shoes only outdoors to keep the feet warm and protected from minor injuries. Children in this age group should wear shoes made of very soft materials or booties with non-slip soles.

In the first months of life, babies should be placed in a supine position (i.e. resting or lying on his back) that leaves them free to move their legs.

Later on, the baby will learn to turn over and lie on its tummy with its head up. This is the phase immediately preceding crawling. Leave baby free to move under your supervision and in a safe place: this is the time when the spine curvature develops and the back and head muscles grow stronger, ready for crawling. When the baby starts moving autonomously he should be dressed in loose, comfortable clothes that do not represent a hindrance to movement.

When the baby starts crawling, she should start wearing proper shoes made of natural quality materials and with soles. Generally shoes should be discarded after 3 months. Regularly check that the shoes fit properly, especially when you start experiencing some difficulty in putting them on: this is usually a sign that it is time to get new, better fitting shoes.

Make sure that there is at least approximatley 1.3 cm of space beween the toes and the point of the shoes.

What to look forThe ideal shoes must fit correctly

and also comply with baby’s specific requirements.

shoes should be light and comfortable, with enough room for the toes. The soles must be flexible to allow children the necessary freedom of movement and, above all, to feel the ground with their feet. This continuous stimulation is of basic importance for the development of a toddler’s motor skills and to exercise the muscles.

Lightness: shoes must be lightweight and flexible, to allow a toddler to walk freely, without becoming unnecessarily tired. In this way its foot and leg muscles can develop correctly through constant exercise.

Flexibility: little feet need special soles that imitate the feet’s natural flexibility. From birth babies’ feet grow stronger through constant movement. The sole should follow the foot’s natural movement, maintaining its natural elasticity for optimal muscle development.

stimulation: feeling the ground with its feet, helps baby to develop its motor

skills, strengthen its muscles and acquire a correct body posture. For these reasons children should walk on different surfaces.

Freedom: finally, feet do not want to be restricted; on the contrary, they need room to move. A toddler may not be able to complain if its shoes feel tight, however ill fitting shoes inevitably prevent its feet from developing correctly. The footwear’s toe ends must

also take into consideration the growing needs of toddlers’ toes, in order to be able to move freely inside the shoe.

• If you are transporting a child in a carrycot/pram that has an adjustable inner backrest, this must be reclined completely to the horizontal position.

• For safety reasons do not give baby any food while travelling, especially lolly pops, ice lolly pops or other foods on sticks. In case of an impact or sudden braking, the stick might injure the child or obstruct its airways.

• Pay attention also to the items you use to amuse your child while travelling, since they might prove dangerous in case of sudden braking or of an accident. For this reason it is recommended to use soft toys. Do not transport any loose objects in the car that might hit the baby in case of sudden braking.

• If your car has remained parked in the sun for a long time, remember to check the infant seat temperature, so that the child does not get burned when you place her on the seat. Never leave your child unattended in the car, even for few minutes: always take your baby with you.

• If the car has been left in the sun, check that the different parts of the child car seat are not too hot before placing the child into it.

• According to car accident statistics, the rear seat, in particular the central rear seat, is the safest position where to fit the child car seat. However, if it is not possible to use the central rear seat of the car (most child car seats must be fitted with a 3-point safety belt, but not all the cars have a central rear seat equipped with a safety belt), it is recommended to fit the child car seat into the left rear seat (pavement side).

• Check periodically that your child does not unfasten the buckle of the safety harness, and that she does not tamper with the child car seat or any of its parts.

• The safety harness of the child car seat must always be tensioned correctly, but should not exercise too much pressure on the child’s chest. A safety harness is tightened correctly when an adult can insert his or her hand between the back of the child and the backrest of the child car seat.

• Always replace a child car seat used in a car that had an accident, even a minor incident. It may have suffered structural damages which could compromise the safety of the product.

The choice for Children’s shoes

It is a well known fact that in order for feet to develop correctly, a child should walk bare footed as often as possible. Here is some advice for the proper choice of children’s shoes, and help your baby in his life’s great adventures: learning to walk. Tiny Feet

Chicco’s shoes: When do I start?

Consider this advice and do not undervalue its importance: consider compliance with these

simple rules as an important contribution to your child’s

safety and health.

It is when babies learn to stand up that it becomes of paramount importance to choose the right footwear. A toddler’s first shoes, must be comfortable enough to leave its feet free to move and to sense the ground with its feet. In addition, they must also be soft and flexible to follow the foot’s natural motion, for it is with movement that toddler’s feet acquire muscular strength and development of a good posture.

Chicco shoes are exclusively available from Gallarija Darmanin, Iklin

Protection (baby 5m+): During the first months of life, baby’s feet become stronger and acquire more muscle tone and sensitivity: for these reasons they should be left as free as possible and shoes should only protect the feet from the cold or from injuries.

Crawling (infant 9m+): Baby’s feet should be left as free as possible to feel the floor surface and to control movement, but the front part of baby’s feet also needs protection.

Walking (child 3y+): During this stage, baby’s shoes must serve two purposes: they must protect the feet without binding them, and must also support them and help them become stronger and acquire more sensitivity and a confi dent step.

Chicco’s Physiological Shoes: Gattona. They are more comfortable, more flexible and lighter. They walk with your child step by step.

Flexibility: the sole, flexible in the right places, helps the correct development of the leg muscles. It follows the foot’s natural movement, so it doesn’t hinder its natural elasticity while the baby crawls.

Freedom: the more rounded shape leaves enough room for the toes to move thus ensuring them freedom of movement.

Stimulation: the exclusive Chicco’s insole continuously stimulates the foot’s sole.

Lightness: the materials of Chicco’s Physiological shoes have been chosen for their lightness, so that the shoes do not hinder baby’s freedom of movement.

The Chicco Observatory follows the development of the child during its first years of life with the collaboration of mothers, expert pediatricians, doctors, associations and day-care centers, to propose new products all specially designed for each phase of the child’s growth.

During this time it will also start getting hot, so your child would need refreshing and nutritious snacks. For this issue we thought of helping you out to choose appropriate yoghurts and desserts which you can take with you on these outings.

Do’s & Don’ts during outings…Avoid giving your child sweets and

other savory packed snacks (in Maltese known as Pakketti!!) which are full of additives and fats which are really not a healthy option for your child. If your child wants something to nibble, why not give her some Plasmon biscuits, which contain the right balance of fats, sugars, Vitamins B1, B2, B6 and PP. For your convenience we have also introduced Plasmon snack packs which contain 12 biscuits in each packet, so that you would not need to stay carrying out a whole packet of biscuits with you. These snack packs are available from any supermarket in Malta & Gozo.

Give your child to eat cheeses, but not any cheese. Give her a jar of Plasmon Cheeses. You can choose from emmenthal Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, Classic Cheese, Cheese with carrots & Potatoes and Cheese with ham. But why choose Plasmon and not any other processed cheese? Plasmon Cheese selection is GLuTeN FRee and is enriched with extra Protein & Calcium. Other processed cheeses DO NOT have these qualities and are not in jars. Plasmon cheeses are convenient and ready for you to give to your child

from a jar, with no hassle of any other preparations. These cheeses are suitable for babies

who are 4 months and over.

For a nutritious dessert you can

give your baby any of our Plasmon

Baby Merenda with cheese. There are two variations: ‘Formaggio Banana e Pera’ and ‘Formaggino e Mela’. These baby snacks are good for baby over 5 months, are GLuTeN FRee and enriched with extra Vitamin C.

For those mothers who would like to give other types of dessert we have yoghurts which are again enriched with extra Vitamin C and are GLuTeN FRee. These yoghurts come in different variations such as Apricot & Yoghurt, Banana & Yoghurt, Pear & Yoghurt, strawberry & Yoghurt amongst many others. These yoghurts are all made up from pasteurized milk to make it safer for your baby.

For those children who are 12 months and older, we have something more exciting for you to give them. We have Junior merende, which come in two different variations – Vanilla & Chocolate. These merende again are GLuTeN FRee and are enriched with extra Protein and Calcium. It is also good that you know that 80% of these merende is milk, so you know that you are giving you child a purely healthy snack.

Picnics and outingsWhat shall I take with me?At last, the winter cold is slowly slowly fading away and we are getting warmer days. Because of this, more families are heading out to picnics, afternoon strolls and playground outings.

Go on and enjoy your self on a day out...

Let Plasmon do the rest!

Plasmon strives to make mums’ lives easier and hassle free! With Plasmon you can put your mind at rest that you are giving your child a healthy snack, even though it is ready made, and you can also enjoy the convenience of having a ready made nutritious snack for your child in a jar... and all you

Now that the warm season will soon arrive, how often should my baby drink and what would be the best choice?

Your child’s body needs fluids for many different reasons to help regulate body temperature, to carry nutrients and oxygen to cells and remove wastes, to lubricate joints, and to protect organs and tissues.

Children need 8-12 cups of water every day. You may think that sounds like a lot. However, keep in mind that other beverages like milk and fruit juice, as well as the water in the foods we eat, all count toward the daily water total.

Water is often the best solution for quenching your child’s thirst. Water is a vital nutrient that is readily available and inexpensive. In addition, milk and fruit juices make good beverage options. Not only do they provide water, but also milk is rich in nutrients including bone building calcium, and fruit juice provides many of the nutrients that are found in the fruit itself (such as vitamins, minerals).

Another healthy beverage your child should drink is fruit nectar. Children love its naturally sweet taste, and there’s such a wide variety of flavours to choose from, such as Plasmon Pear, Apricot, Peach, Apple and Apple & Lemon Nectars. Fruit juice offers many of the same nutrients as its fruit counterpart (with the exception of fiber), and counts as a serving from the Fruit Group in the Food Guide Pyramid.

Baby Pasta (4 months +)Bebiriso and sabbiolina are the two first types of pasta which you can safely introduce to your baby following the cereal stage. Plasmon baby Pasta is very different from the normal kind of Pasta as it is enriched with extra Calcium, extra Iron and Vitamins B1 & B6. Plasmon’s Bebiriso is also Gluten free whilst the sabbiolina is NOT Gluten Free. Baby Pastina needs to be cooked for 2 minutes and is easily digestable.

Normal Children’s Pasta (5 months +)In the following months, as your baby grows, you can offer other larger pasta shapes, such as Plasmon Anellini, Astrine and Gemmine, which will help encourage the little one to chew. Towards the 9th month, you can introduce the first ‘spaghetti’ such as Plasmon Fili d’Angelo as fine pasta served with extra virgin olive oil or baby cheese such as Plasmon Fromaggio as well as any of the Plasmon meat concentrates. The Normal Pastine are NOT gluten free and are enriched with extra Calcium, Iron, sodium, Vitamin B1 & B6, all essential vitamins which help your baby to grow. These shaped and coloured pasta will for sure be fun to eat, as well as highly nutritious since they are made from vegetables and enriched with calcium and iron to ensure the healthy growth of your baby. The coloured pasta needs to be cooked for 8 minutes and goes very well with a jar of Plasmon meat concentrates. NONe of the above Junior pasta is Gluten free.
