    PLACEMENT POLICY 2011-12

    Placements in the industry and alignment of career with role, brand andpackage have come to be regarded as the most critical goal of professional

    education. Though learning must be recognized as an end in itself, yet, it isdefinitely important that professional education facilitates the process of careeradvancement of students. Moreover, it has been seen that right placementhappens as much because of individual brilliance and aptitude as it is becauseof strategical preparedness. The university visualizes its role as a facilitator tobring about a radical change in the employability of its students. Consequently,a comprehensive placement policy has been framed keeping in mind theaspirations of the students, their parents and expectations of the industry.

    The Placement Services of the University will now be available tothose students who opt to avail of them and commit to abide by the

    requirements thereof. The essence of this policy is that the university will bear theentire cost of Professional Enhancement Programmes and otherinterventions without passing on any cost to the students.

    Since as per current recruitment trends, the recruitmentactivity starts early in pre-final semester, the students are required togear up for being a part of placement related activities immediately atthis stage.

    In order to provide effective inputs to the students, thestudents likely to pass out in 2012 and opting for placement

    assistance will be required to forego all/part of intervening vacationsand will be expected to attend mandatory sessions in campus duringvacations.

    The attendance in these sessions will be compulsory and willbe mapped. No request for relaxation/exemption etc whatsoever willbe entertained.

    All such students who are already availing hostel facility maybe provided accommodation at subsidized hostel fees in differenthostel during their period of mandatory sessions in campus.

    The exact PEP activity schedule for coming summer vacationswill be intimated separately.

    For all purposes, the UMS will be used forannouncements/notifications. Any announcement/notification made onUMS will be deemed to have been served on the students. TheUniversity may also use Email/SMS at times to conveyinformation/interact with students/parents.

    APPLICABILITY: THIS POLICY SHALL BE EFFECTIVE FOR BATCHESPASSING OUT IN YEAR 2012.

    A. OBJECTIVES

    1) To provide active placement assistance to every eligible studentopting for Placement Services of the University.

    2) To provide sufficient grooming, career and personality enhancementrelated inputs to students to imbibe personality traits and job relevantinformation to enhance their employability.

    3) To lay down rules and regulations for availing placement assistancethat provides equitable opportunity to students of varying academicachievements and capability levels.

    4) To define students' code of conduct that is expected and appreciatedby the industry.

    B. THE PROCESS (A detailed time line of calendar isincluded below)

    1. The student visits UMS, fills basic information form and reads policytext available thereon.

    2. The student reads the policy carefully and understands expectationsof the university from the student and other vital ingredients of the policy.

    3. In case student wants to register for the placement assistance, thenhe/she checks in the box provided therein thereby accepting all provisions ofthe policy.

    4. Student then fills the registration form diligently by following theinstructions.

    5. A system generated mail/SMS is sent to the student to confirmsuccessful registration. In case no mail/SMS is received, then it means thatthere was some problem in filling the form. The student then follows theprescribed drill.

    6. The student attends the orientation session as per furtherinstructions.

    7. The student takes Diagnostic Tests conducted by the University andother such interventions.

    8. The student attends PEP and other sessions conducted by variousbodies in order to improve his employability.

    C. PROFESSIONAL ENHANCEMENT PROGRAMMES

    1) The Department of Placements (DoP) under Division of StudentCareer Services of Lovely Professional University will facilitate active placementsupport to all the eligible students who have opted for the placement servicesof the University.

    2) The University will conduct a mandatory Professional EnhancementProgramme (PEP) for all students who opt for placement services of theUniversity. Diagnostic Test(s) will be conducted to evaluate the skill set leveland other related issues for readiness in Placement. The tests are mandatoryfor all students who register for placement assistance. Each of these tests islikely to about cost Rs 500/- per student. The university will bear the cost ofthese tests. However, in case a student skips any of these tests for whateverreason(s), the cost would be recovered from the student @ Rs 500/- per test.These tests will check the soft skills, technical skills and other professional

    competencies of the student. Based on the performance in this diagnostic test,a Training Programme known as Professional Enhancement Program (PEP) willbe conducted for these students.

    3) The University may also conduct placement preparedness test(s) todetermine the readiness of students. The test is likely to cost about Rs 500/-. Incase a student does not take this test, the cost would be recovered fromstudent. The scores of this test may be utilized in segregating students forselective exposure to corporates.

    4) The attendance in various activities conducted under the umbrella of

    PEPs will be mapped rigorously. There can be various types of activities underPEP. There can be several categories of these activities depending on the hostbody.

    STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SECURE AN ATTENDANCE OF 80%(AFTER DEDUCTING 10% BECAUSE OF MEDICAL REASONS)COLLECTIVELY IN ALL MANDATORY PLACEMENT ACTIVITIES TAKENTOGETHER IN A PARTICULAR ATTENDANCE CYCLE.The attendance will be computed at the end of each reckoning cycle as below;

    1. FIRST ATTENDANCE CYCLE

    All sessions conducted afterenrollment and till reopeningof university after summervacations. This will includemandatory sessions duringsummer vacations

    2. SECOND ATTENDANCE CYCLE

    All sessions conducted afterreopening of university andtill 30th September, 2011

    3. THIRD ATTENDANCE CYCLE

    All sessions conductedbetween 1st October 2011and 30th November 2011

    4. FOURTH ATTENDANCE CYCLE

    All sessions conductedbetween 1st December 2011and 28th February 2012. hiswill include mandatorysessions

    5. FIFTH ATTENDANCE CYCLE

    All sessions conducted

    between 1st March 2012 and30th April 2012

    5) In order to qualify for taking part in any recruitment activity in nextattendance cycle, the student is required to secure 80% attendance in the PEPsand other placement related activities and to take part in all mandatory tests inthe preceding cycle. THE ATTENDANCE IN ATTENDANCE CYCLE I THATWOULD HAPPEN DURING SUMMER VACATIONS IS ABSOLUTELYMANDATORY. ANY STUDENT WHO DOES NOT ATTEND MANDATORYSESSIONS DURING SUMMER VACATIONS FOR WHATEVER REASON(S)WILL BE SUMMARILY DEBARRED FROM THE REMAINING PLACEMENTPROCESS FOR THE ENTIRE TIME. THUS IT IS MADE CLEAR AGAIN THATATTENDANCE IN SESSIONS DURING SUMMER VACATIONS ISABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Any student whose attendance in mandatory

    placement sessions falls below stipulated 80% at the close of any attendancecycle (CYCLE II ONWARDS) will not qualify to take part in any recruitment drive(whether on campus drive/joint campus/resume short listing etc or any offcampus drive facilitated by the university) in the next attendance cycle. Incase a student is interested in being a part of placement assistance again, then

    he/she will have to deposit Rs 2000/- afresh. , The student will then be requiredto attend all placement sessions and will be allowed to take part in campusdrives in next attendance cycle subject to following conditions:

    i. The student deposits Rs 2000/- again and furnishes receipt of thesame.

    ii. The student furnishes an undertaking from parents at least 15 daysbefore the close of the cycle.a. ILLUSTRATION : If attendance falls short in Cycle II, then studentdoes qualify for recruitment drives in Cycle III but has to attend mandatory PEPsessions in Cycle III. In order to be able to attend PEP sessions and to takefurther part in placement process, the student deposits Rs 2000/-. In case

    he/she attends mandatory placement sessions in Cycle II and securesstipulated attendance and furnishes undertaking from parents, then he/she isallowed to take part in recruitment drives in Cycle IV.6) Any student whose attendance falls below 80% in any of 2 attendancecycles will be permanently debarred from the placement process. It will bepresumed that he/she is not inclined to seek universitys placement assistance.7) Any student who is on training during any of the attendance cycleswill be required to attend mandatory sessions immediately after his return or ifcalled by the university earlier on curtailment of training or after viva etc.He/she would, however, be required to take part in all such interventions/testswhich are made available to students online or on UMS.8) In so far as possible, no PEP session would be organized duringregular exams. However, in case a PEP session and a backlog/reappear examdate clashes, then exemption from PEP session will be given on specificrequest in advance.9) Exemption from PEP sessions may also be considered in casesession(s) clashes with any recruitment drive facilitated by the university.10) In case the total exemptions (S No 8-9 taken together) in a particularattendance cycle results in attendance falling below 80%, then the studentmay be assigned/asked to attend optional placement activities for additionalinputs for which separate directions would be issued.

    11) The fee of the PEP will be borne by LPU subject to fulfillmentof underlying conditions. The University is committed to enhance theplaceability of all such students who opt for placement assistance and believein observing attendance norms as above and all other prescribed norms underthis policy. The University will accordingly bear all expenditure in thisconnection after the student has opted for placement policy.i) The expenditure per student works out to more than Rs 2000/- per

    attendance cycle. In order to ensure an element of seriousness amongststudents towards the placement, the students who register for placementprocess are required to deposit a refundable sum of Rs 2000/- and furnishreceipt to DSCS. .ii) This refundable component shall be refunded back after completion of

    all cycles to such students who are not disqualified for any reason and afteradjusting for any extra expenditure incurred for mandatory benchmarking testsetc.iii) A student can be permanently disqualified on account of missingsessions during summer vacation in Cycle I.iv) A student can also be disqualified from placement process on accountof low attendance as explained above or for not conforming to prescribednorms of behaviour, dress code etc. For very instance of disqualification, thedeposit of Rs 2000/- will stand forfeited.v) However, any student who is permanently disqualified fromplacement process will not be admitted back under any circumstances.

    12) The profile of the companies visiting LPU for Campus Drives will bemade available, wherever feasible, to enable students to understand andanalyze the relevant information and prepare themselves for the CampusDrives.

    13) To the extent feasible, the DoP/Faculty/Placement Coordinators shallorganize briefing sessions or provide relevant information to appraise thestudents about the expectations of the companies visiting LPU for CampusDrives.

    D. REQUISITES FOR AVAILING PLACEMENT SERVICES

    1) Benchmarking Tests:

    i. All students who aspire for jobs in IT/ITEs companies will have toregister and appear for NACTECH test and/or other such benchmark testsas may be prescribed.

    ii. The University can get one or more benchmark tests conducted forother streams as well.

    iii. For other jobs, the University may prescribe industry-standard testswhich all students desiring for these types of jobs will have to register.

    iv. The students belonging to specific streams to which the

    benchmarking test acts as enabler will have to mandatorily take part insuch tests.

    v. The cost of these tests will be borne by the students. The studentswill be required to deposit a sum of Rs 1000/- immediately after

    registering for placement assistance. This amount shall stand forfeited ifstudent skips the test(s) for any reason.

    vi. This fee of Rs 1000/- will be utilized for expenses incurred in allmandatory benchmarking tests. The balance, if any, will be refundedback to students. In case of any extra expenditure incurred by theuniversity on these benchmarking tests, the same will be adjustedagainst the refundable component of Rs 2000/- lying with university asabove as hedge against PEP participation. In case there is any extraexpenditure by the university on mandatory benchmarking tests overand above Rs 1000/- and the refundable security of Rs 2000/- has also

    been forfeited for whatever reason, then student will be required to payextra expenditure.

    vii. The University will arrange free coaching for these tests which will bemandatory for all such students to attend and will have to secure 80%attendance. The coaching for the benchmarking tests will be providedfree of cost to the students. However, the coaching will cost Rs 1000/-(approx.) per student. In case a student does not attend coaching classesor fails to secure mandatory attendance of 80%, Rs 1000/- shall berecovered from the student.

    2) Timely Online Registration: All students interested in a placementdrive shall register online as per the specified date and time and as per theinstructions made available to them from time to time.

    3) In so far as possible, the registration process for particularrecruitment drives will be actuated through UMS only in online mode. However,there may be instances when registration is done manually/walk-in/throughplacement coordinators. It will be responsibility of the student to keep watchingUMS for guidance on case to case basis.

    4) At times intimation to students may be made through their registeredcell number and/or registered email address. So students are required toensure that they keep monitoring their email accounts and SMS inbox of cellnumbers. In the present regime, a good number of companies are going in forwritten test in online mode. These companies transmit the confidential UserIDs/Passwords direct to students on their registered email addresses and/orregistered cell numbers. These are normally not shared with university. Thus

    students are required to stick on with such addresses and numbers so that theydo not miss any communication. This is more visible during vacations/trainingswhen students switch on to some other local cell number. The university shallnot be responsible for any such loss of communication arising out of studentmissing out announcements on UMS/Registered Email Address/Registered Cell

    Number. No request/correspondence shall be entertained in this regard.

    5) Timely Reporting for Drives: The students who register for a driveshall report to the venue of placement drive strictly at the appointed time.

    6) Placement Kit : The students shall be required to maintain aplacement kit in prescribed folder containing the following

    a) 3 copies of their latest resume duly vetted by their facultyplacement co-coordinator.

    b) 5 passport size photographs.

    c) Original copies of all relevant testimonials/certificates.

    d) At least 2 photocopies of all relevanttestimonials/certificates.

    e) A copy of the project report(s)/trainings/certifications andreports thereof undertaken by the student during the professionalacademic programme.

    7) Dress/Presentation/Decorum Code: Students registering forplacement drives shall present themselves in formal attire and shall be wellgroomed as per industry standards which would be prescribed separately.

    a) Plain shirt with neck-tie (with blazer in winter), formaltrousers (no jeans) and formal shoes. The colours/combinations ofshirts, trousers and neck-tie would be prescribed in due course oftime.

    b) Students will be required to buy a specially emblazonedUniversity Neck Tie for this purpose.

    c) Neatly cut hair of reasonable size for non-Sikh students.Male students not sporting regular beard are required to come clean

    shaven.

    d) Turban for Sikh students.

    e) Well-polished formal shoes are essential.

    f) For girls, formal and sober dress is essential

    g) Girl students should consider wearing only essentialjewellery item(s), if they want to sport any jewellery and only formalfootwear. The make-up and cosmetics should be simple, decent andminimum essential only.

    8) Behaviour: The conduct and behaviour of the students with thecompany officials, members of the placement cell, faculty and studentcoordinators shall be decent and polite. They are required to follow instructions

    from the deputed and authorized staff members. Any rude or unwarrantedbehaviour shall disqualify the student from the placement drive or even theplacement process. This may also lead to disciplinary action as well.

    As can be seen from above, the university is likely to spend about TenThousand Rupees (Rs 10,000/-) per student in final year alone. Other thanbenchmarking tests costing Rs 1000/-, no other cost has been passed on tothe students. The element of recovery/forfeiture has been included toensure element of seriousness and for the sake of constructive participationon part of the students.

    F. CODE OF CONDUCT FOR PLACEMENT SERVICES

    1. A student enrolled for placement services shall attend all placementdrives relevant to the student, as organized by DoP. The preferred list ofrelevance will be indicated by the student at the time of enrolment process. Incase the student enrolled for placement services fails to register for threeconsecutive relevant placement drives, for any reason whatsoever exceptMedical Reason, or fails to register for in a total of five relevant placement

    drives conducted by the DoP for that particular stream, he/she shall bepermanently disqualified from availing any further placement assistance.

    2. In case a student fails to participate in any placement drive for whichhe/she has registered (except for genuine medical reasons) or does notcomplete the entire process of the drive, he/she shall be permanentlydisqualified and debarred from availing any further placement assistance.

    3. All students shall furnish correct information as and when required. Astudent giving wrong information at any stage shall be permanentlydisqualified and debarred from availing any further placement assistance.

    4. Any student who is found guilty of using unfair means in any of the testsor other process will be disqualified and debarred from availing placementassistance.

    5. Students who opt for placement services may be assigned theresponsibility to organize or assist in the placement drives or activitiesconducted for the senior batches for another purpose, in order to prepare them

    better for their own placements.

    6. The students are prohibited from entering into any debate/argument withcompany officials or university officials during the conduct of drive. Grievance,if any, may be taken up with appropriate authorities at any later stage.

    G. POLICY FOR JOB OFFERS

    (Any Provision mentioned under this Placement Policy may be revisedat any point of time as deemed appropriate by the University)

    1. A Student can participate in any number of placement drives tillhe/she gets a job offer.

    2. A Student can avail maximum of two job offers. In case a student optsto appear for a second job when he/she already has secured an offer, thenhe/she is indicating that profile of the second job is preferable to the onehe/she has already secured and, therefore, in case he/she gets the secondoffer, the first job will be automatically be considered to be surrendered. Nocorrespondence/hearing shall be entertained in this regard. Offer for thepurpose of placement would mean either a formal offer letter/letter of intentfrom the company or any formal communication from the company either toindividual students or to the placement office.

    3. Shortlisting of the student by a company would not be counted as job

    offer till result is declared. In the event of his getting an offer, the same wouldbe regulated as under:a) SCENARIO ONE: NO PREVIOUS OFFER IN HAND: This would becounted as first offer.b) SCENARIO TWO: ONE PREVIOUS OFFER IN HAND: If he gets anoffer from a second company where he was shortlisted prior to getting firstoffer, the student will have the option to choose within 72 hours one job fromamong any of the two offers. In case no communication is received, then theoffer received earlier shall be deemed to have been surrendered. This would betreated as first offer. He would be eligible for one more offer as per para 2above.

    a) SCENARIO THREE: AVAILED TWO OFFERS: No moreeligible to take part in placement process. All offers and short listings till nowor in pipeline would stand cancelled.

    4. A Student can avail any number of offers through Job Fairs, Walk-insand from any other source which are not initiated by DoP but needs to intimatethe DoP about the same so that in case there is any verification/enquiry fromthe company DoP is in position to answer the same.

    5. Student Coordinator Student Placement Coordinator whoseperformance is found to be excellent in coordinating the drives will be eligiblefor one extra offer as a token of Appreciation.

    6. In case of any peculiar situation arising out of unforeseencontingencies like 2 results being declared on same day etc, the DSCS mayhave to take a balanced view on case to case basis and on the facts and meritsof the case. Any decision taken under this clause will not be treated asprecedence for any future analogies. No request on this count shall beentertained.

    In case of any issue arising out of this policy and interpretation thereof;decision regarding any point not covered under this policy; and in case ofany provision/decision being changed, modified or overridden, ChancellorLPU shall be the final authority.
