NEWSLETTER OF VENTANA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ISSUE #15 MARCH 6, 2015 Principal’s Message State Testing AzMERIT (Arizona’s Measurement of Educational Readiness to Inform Teaching) is Arizona’s new statewide achievement test. Why does Arizona need this new test? In 2010, the Arizona State Board of Education adopted new standards in English language arts and mathematics for all students in Arizona. These academic standards outline what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. With the adoption and implementation of new standards, a new test was necessary. How is AzMERIT different from the AIMS test? Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) tested the old standards. Spring 2014 was the last time AIMS was administered for reading, writing, and mathematics. AzMERIT, based on the new standards, will tell teachers, students, and parents if students are on track to be college and career ready upon graduation from high school. The Arizona Science Standards did not change, so students in Grade 4, 8, and high school will still take the AIMS Science test. Who will take AzMERIT? Arizona public school students in Grades 3 through high school will take AzMERIT. Students in Grades 3-8 will take an assessment in English language arts and mathematics at their grade level. Only eligible students with significant cognitive disabilities will participate in other alternate achievement tests. When and how will the test be given? CFSD will be administering the computer-based version of AzMERIT. The testing schedule for Ventana Vista is listed below: Wednesday, April 8 - AIMS Science - Gr. 4 Wednesday, April 15 - AzMERIT Writing - Gr. 3-5 Tuesday, April 21 - AzMERIT Reading and Math, Part 1 - Gr. 3-5 Wednesday, April 22 - AzMERIT Reading and Math, Part 2 - Gr. 3-5 Students in Grades 3-5 may bring in a pair of headphones (ear buds) to use for the audio portion of AzMERIT. If you would like to send in a set for your child, please place it in a Ziploc baggie with his/her name on it. Students who do not bring in a set from home will be provided with a set from the school. Continued on Page 2

Principal’s Message (continued) Change in School Leadership In case you missed it, below is an email message that was sent to families last week: Change is never an easy thing. It is human nature to become comfortable with what is familiar. Ventana Vista has been my home for the past 10 years, and it is indeed a comfortable place. I can truly say that I look forward to coming to work each day. The unwavering dedication to children; incredible levels passion and creativity; and strong family partnerships that exist on this campus are remarkable. I have grown and developed and become a better educator, and a better person, because of my time here. And so, it is with mixed emotions that I share with you today my reassignment and new endeavor. Beginning July 1, I will assume the position of principal at Manzanita School. Some of you know that I started my career in CFSD there over 22 years ago as a student teacher, and then as a classroom teacher. I am fortunate to say that anytime I have made a professional move, I have not ever done so because of any dissatisfaction with my work. Rather, I have remained open to new challenges, as they have presented themselves. At this time, too, although I was not looking to make a change, I am excited about this opportunity. I recognize that change can be a good thing, for me, personally and professionally, as well as for our school. I look forward to completing this school year with all of you, and working closely with the administrative team to ensure a smooth transition into new leadership for Ventana Vista. Dr. Kamerzell, CFSD Superintendent, sent the following message, as well: I am pleased to announce that Ventana Vista's next principal will be Dana Mulay effective July 1, 2015. She is currently our Director of Valley View Early Learning Center and Assistant Principal at Esperero Canyon Middle School. Dana has a strong elementary teaching background that included positions in California and at Sunrise Drive Elementary School in the Catalina Foothills School District. She also served as a literacy coach in a California school district and a training and curriculum specialist for the United States Department of Defense. Dana earned a B.A. in education and an M.A. in education leadership from the University of Arizona. I know that you will join me in welcoming Dana to Ventana Vista. We anticipate a very smooth transition into the 2015-2016 school year.

Spring Administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test In accordance with state requirements, the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is offered at different times during the year. The spring administration is for Grades K-1 only. Testing will be offered in August for Grade 2, so students currently in Grade 1 may choose to wait. The test date is Thursday, March 26th. Testing is done before school at 7:30. Testing is in the IDS room, number 214 at Ventana Vista. Students should arrive at 7:15. Requests for testing must be made in writing by Thursday March 12, 2015. Forms are available in the school office or by email from me. It is recommended that parents of primary students consult with the classroom teacher and/or gifted specialist before requesting testing. Test results for such young students are valid for a short time only and are NOT required for the identification of primary students for differentiated instruction or extended groups in reading and math in first or second grades. The assessments used to identify students for these groups are given to all children at the beginning and throughout the year as a regular part of the educational program. Dear Parents, On Wednesday, February 25th, after lunch, the district will be installing new point of service cash registers in all of the school cafeterias. The new point of service software is called Meal Magic. Meal Magic will interface with the InTouch student receipting software. When funds are deposited through InTouch, they will be electronically fed to Meal Magic every day before the lunch periods begin. There will also be an electronic feed from Meal Magic so families can view their student's lunch account balance through InTouch. On Tuesday morning, the interface with MyLunchMoney.com was stopped, as this system is linked to our old point of service system. Please utilize InTouch from this point forward to deposit funds into your student's lunch account. The link for the InTouch portal is located on the school website under the tab “For Parents.” Data files were brought into Meal Magic and will accurately reflect a student's National School Lunch Program status (i.e., free, reduced or paid) and also the current account balance for each student's lunch account. The final update will be completed today after the lunch period is over. If you have questions now or after we go live with Meal Magic on Monday, March 2nd, please contact me and I will address any questions or issues. Sandra N.
