Please find your name tag and start wearing it
to church so that our pastor can begin to learn
names and faces! If you don’t have one, you
may call the office to order one.
It is with great humility that I express sincere thankfulness for the generous
hearts of the Sierra Vista family. It is such a rich blessing to be a part of such
a generous community of faith. The Children’s Bed Project, being the re-
cipient of the Christmas offering from our church, received $11,969.72.
As the coordinator of the project, which was truly inspired by God, I find my-
self overwhelmed again and again as I watch God at work through Sierra
Vista in providing the resources needed. In the two school years that we have provided beds throughout
the city, we have given 456 beds at last count. This is an average of just over twenty-five beds a month
at a cost of just over $4,000 a month. We have never been without resources because of the generosity
of Sierra Vista members who have given their time, money and talents. They have helped with grant writ-
ing, solicited funds from their work place, hosted performances which took up donations for the project,
arranged for presentations at organizations in which they are involved, helped to shop for and deliver
beds and bedding, provided brochures and video production and given their support through words,
money and prayer.
Please continue to hold this ministry up in your prayers and provide support as you feel God moving
you to be a part of this project. Your generosity is blessings others. Thank you!
Blessings, Shirley Oliphant

Matthew 4:18-22: “One day as Jesus was walking along the shore
of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Pe-
ter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for
a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will
show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed
him.” ~ Jesus’ disciples didn’t even question whether they should follow Jesus or
not… They just went. Will you?

Hi folks,
I woke up this morning thinking about some of the past Christmases that I celebrated as a kid. I
think (or at least I hope) we all have those fond memories that tend to rise out of our subconscious and
bring a warm and relished image to mind. One such thought for me takes me back to my grandmother’s
house, my dad’s mom, “Big Baa,” who proudly received and wore that title due to the grandkid’s inability
to properly pronounce “Big Mamma.”
Big Baa was everything you would expect to find in a southern woman who was raised in her time,
and she was never shy in sharing or living the southern folklore that was a part of our heritage. For in-
stance, Big Baa’s “Christmas tree” was always ‘taken down’ and ‘out the door’ long before New Year’s
morning. Somewhere in her past, it
had been suggested that leaving a
“Christmas tree” up over New Years
was a doorway to allowing the past
year’s troubles to be carried into the
new year.
Now in all honesty, I don’t
really know if my “Big Baa” be-
lieved in that “old wives’ tale” or
not, but it is one that she observed
every year. As for me, I don’t worry
so much about leaving my tree up,
but I realize that we have the choice
as to what we carry into the coming
year.
As we approach this new
year, it is important for us consider
what things we choose to leave in
the past… as well as those in which
we choose to carry forward. As we
seek to follow Jesus Christ, it is easy
to forget our discipleship is a contin-
uous process of leaving behind those
things that separate us from God and
others, while we open our hearts and
lives to the possibilities a closer
walk with Christ provides.
I truly believe that this new
year holds great promise in what
God desires to do “in” and “through”
us. I invite you to join me as we
prayerfully seek to be all God hopes
of us as we faithfully journey into
God’s future.
In Christ,
