Charter boats for fishing and scenic trips are operating from the impressive new Whangamata Marina. The Whangamata Beach Hop is a famous, annual, late summer celebration of ‘Rods and Rock n Roll’. Nearby Whiritoa and Onemana are top sandy beaches with small and friendly communities.

Opoutere has a pristine, 6k long white sandy beach with a tidal estuary, rare birds, the alternative Prana Eco Retreat centre with international workshops and festivals and high quality art at the Topadahil Studios. Tairua and Pauanui straddle the beautiful Tairua Harbour and a summer passenger ferry links the two. Tairua is on the main road with good cafes and accommodation. The main beaches are surf beaches, the harbour bays are more suited to family picnics and kayaking. Local activities include diving and fishing. Take the walk to the top of Paku, the big knob at the harbour entrance, for fine views. Pauanui is a beach house resort with an excellent surf beach and coastal walks.
